Years ago I asked one of the crew members of the super fleet units and he confirmed that the big GEs we're put in idle mode at 3751's crew request to give the rail fans a show how of how powerful the 3751 is by pulling her train and diesel units up the steep grade without any assistance at all, she may not be as big and powerful as the Union Pacific Boy 4014 but 3751's voice let the world know just how durable and capable of an engine she is! I can't wait when the day comes when 3751 and 2926 come together for the ultimate double heading gala on this same grade, it's the only thing that could top this performance from years ago.

Awesome train to see. In my imagery the engine is a slip stream locomotive - just a tad taller and shorter.

Really nostalgic footage! I always like hearing them lay on the whistle fully when at track speed haha. And the 5 chime does suit her more as it's a personal favorite of mine

Santa Fe 3751 was pulling the 1st Santa Fe Employee Special from Los Angeles, California to Chicago, Illinois and return in August and September 1992

Im sure the diesels where just along for the ride

The diesels were used to extend the range and reduce wear and tear on the locomotive. The diesels were cut out while passing through towns. The 3751 class were allowed a top speed of 100 mph with a 10% tolerance or 110 mph in passenger service. Diesels geared for freight service would have their windings unravelled at that speed. That's the logic being used with 765 having a diesel travel with them while on the NS.

Yeah but one was cut out in Amarillo before and after arriving in Chicago for flat terrain. Also it rejoined again for the return trip.

Was the traffic bad chasing it East and west? I bet Flagstaff and Kingman were a zoo.

Railfan1000 Not to bad we stayed out of Flagstaff for that reason. It was hard enough to catch up with 3751 as it was running 70 mph most of the time. We basically chased it across the state and this is all we could get. If you went to far off road for a shot you were done for the day. Westbound was harder as they didn't slow down for towns like the east bound move. It was a great time though.

Railfan1000 8:19 #3751 meets #18 for the first time. Later it tripleheaded with #18 and #4960 in 2002 and later in 2012 with #4960, 5 years after #18 left. Our Hocking Valley Scenic Railway owned #18's sister #33 from 1972 until 2003. #33 is now at the Age Of Steam Roundhouse.

Sad piece of work. Good thing we didn't pay money for this.

Railscenes Ouch! Sorry I wasn't really out to make a video. I drove the chase vehicle and had to help my partner set up his equipment first and maybe just get an off hand shot myself. Sadly he has not been able to find his master tape and my goal was to only share some memories from that historic day. I was blessed to have been part of the steam business back then I got to do and see many things most railfans couldn't. Just trying to share some of those memories like so many other people on here.

@@jamesmccann1097 Sorry to be blunt, but check your quality of the finished product. My experience has been unless the photo/video is something that is rare, if the quality is poor and/or content been already available stop and ask yourself if it is worth the time, energy and expense to put it on the internet only to waste everyone else's time to view it. Case in point the old lady in the bright pink body suit walking right in front of what might have been a photo line and chatter away while the 3751 chugged right into the scene only to be hidden by her butt. That is when I turned it off. Even these days a sexy lady in a bikini would have gotten you even more dislikes. Any rate this 3751 sequence has been on many other sites and better quality including that annoying helicopter video. BTW I worked the 1992 Employee segment from Chillicothe, Illinois to Ft Madison, Iowa, as conductor. I am still looking for that video. Edelstein Hill portion would be good enough for me. I turned on a small audio recorder and opened the dutch door on the first Pullman sleeper car. My photos are not good because I was shooting up the side of the train. Plus I was on duty. Thanks.
