  • We just got our hands on the new Stargate Blu-ray collection from Visual Entertainment Inc.! In this video GateWorld's Darren Sumner will unbox the package and show you what's inside the brand new HD collection of all three Stargate series - SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe.
    Then we'll do a comparison of the VEI release with Stargate's previous DVD releases, including a look inside the gold-box Collector's Edition of Stargate SG-1.
    This is NOT a sponsored video. You can help support the channel by using our Amazon links to purchase the Blu-ray collections:

    THANKS FOR WATCHING! We're hoping to do more unboxings and other videos like this in the future. Let us know what sort of things you want to see on the channel.
    Meanwhile check the links in the description above if you are looking to buy Stargate on Blu-ray, and stay tuned for our DVD / Blu-ray picture comparisons. We're hoping to have another long video ready next week, so you can see what these episodes actually look like with the upscaling on SG-1 Seasons 1-7.

    Good video, thanks for posting it! I do like the contrast between all the various versions, I've recently taken to changing my packaging for all my various DVDs, and I too have the collector's edition SG-1 box, but I hated the accordion holder for all the reasons you stated plus I found that the cardboard was scratching the discs quite badly after a couple of ins and outs of each disc...
    Which is why I kept the cool box, kept the booklet, but ditched the accordions and put all the discs in the set into 32 slimline disc holders (like the 3 in that season 9 set) and made new slipcovers for each case, used the old artwork as well. 32 slimline cases plus the booklet still fit in that same box just fine, much better way to go!

    I really am super glad that an updated blue ray release has come out. But given the lack luster cover art I'm definitely going to have to hear how you were blown away with the video quality because I've purchased so many versions over the years that spending another $120 on just SG-1 is still a hard sell unless they did a quality job at cleaning everything up.

    I actually have 2 sets of the original release DVDs of SG1 in the big boxes (have my Mom's now), along with the extra disk for the extended Threads eps. They definitely were space takers, but looked sooo nice. Here in Canada those came out at $105, but if you risked them not selling it and waited about 6 months they'd drop to $90. Fan that I am...never risked it. A lot of well worth it money and hours and hours of entertainment bound up in those glorious boxes. Honestly i was kinda miffed at the format change for those last couple seasons, cause they just looked wrong, and i couldn't afford to re buy them all. I WILL be getting this set though!!! I am disappointed that SG-1 seasons 1-7, the 16mm film reels, were supposedly not rescanned in 4K UHD/1080p and than remastered. SGU was a stunning concept. I've been putting hours into interviews with Roger Penrose, who knows more about the universe itself than maybe anyone. The idea of intergalactic travel was years ahead of other series, and still is, though I guess The Expanse is touching on that with the ring gates.

    • @lovetheblue6659
      @lovetheblue6659 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the main problem with SGU was how boring the first half of the first season was. I realize now that it was just part of the full serialization of the narrative, but it was a big departure from the way SG1 and Atlantis had been presented and I don’t think audiences had been properly prepared for that. (There was also a backlash from fans at the time due to the abrupt cancellation of the much more popular “Atlantis” series.). Ironically, if these had been released 10 episodes at a time on Netflix the series would probably have been a big hit! (Of course Netflix would probably have cancelled it anyway following the third batch of 10 episodes. So I guess sometimes you just can’t win ...)

    I'm a fan of stargate sg1, stargate atlantis and stargate universe, but for some reason in the uk there is 6 dvd's per season's 2 to 9 and 5 dvd's in season's 1 and 10. Because of the wait of each season you could only buy each season after the 6th dvd was released but i was to impatient so after season 5 came out i bought them individually so my sg1 collection is 61 dvd cases wide including the new version of children of the gods. I also have stargate atlantis on dvd and blu-ray and stargate universe on dvd. great review.

    The SG1 DVDs are progressive scan, but the inverse telecine is imperfect so that there are often residual combing artifacts, particularly at scene changes. I gave up early on and just started using a brute force deinterlancing filter to make them watchable (even though most frames aren't interlaced at all). I wonder if these artifacts are transferred to the blu-ray or if they're cleaned up. If they aren't cleaned up, then having them up-scaled will make them impervious to any line-based deinterlacing filters, so you'll be stuck with the artefacts. This is what happened with the Farscape blu-ray release, which I ended up exchanging the for the UK DVDs. If SG1 has the same issue, I might have to stick with my Complete Collectors Edition DVD set.
    The Universe blu-rays on the other hand, I am unreservedly excited about and will definitely grab once it is individually available. I've been in a 10 year rage about the missing season 2 blu ray, which looks to be coming to an end.

If it did look different and you had both sets a comparison of those would be cool. I still think a DVD vs Bluray comparison for Atlantis and Universe could be good as it could get people to know what they are buying and get people to grab em maybe. For instance, I literally had no idea at all that there was an SG-1 blu ray release until I saw your comparison video last year, even though it is a show that I regularly watched on DVD and would often look for news on a blu ray, it entirely flew under the radar until that video, so I am really grateful for that.

    Great unboxing review, thanks for all the info, because of you I got that set. To me, the packaging or cover art is really no big deal, just as long as the discs aren't scratched and the package is in great shape and does not get damaged in transit. Most package these days or movies or shows, looks kinda crappy, especially for new movies on Bluray, the covers look like a photoshop nightmare. I'm happy to have these shows on Bluray in a nice box set. As for the quality of Stargate SG1 o Bluray, it looks good to me, it's not perfect, but I mean even the Star Trek TOS and TNG remasters were not perfect, there's tons of issues with the picture sometimes or the effects. I have to imagine these bluray releases must be more reliable than the DVDs, as well. I don't know what it was with those bigger-box seasons, but there was usually one (if not more) episode each season that had a flaw in the disc and would not play all the way through. You could sometimes get around it, by resetting the player and seeking past it, missing a scene or two where the flaw was. It was infuriating. Usually it happened long after I'd bought the set and was well outside the return window. Though I very clearly remember buying Season 4 and watching it immediately, and the season finale "Exodus" froze in the scene where Sam and Jacob describe their plan to blow up the star. I returned the season to Borders where I bought it, and they gave me a new one, only for me to find the exact same error in the exact same scene. Ugh. I gave up and just kept it. Later I found that if I played these DVDs in a PC with a DVD-ROM, the PC would try over and over again to get the scene to keep playing, and eventually it would (though it would skip a few seconds). Guess it required the power of a whole computer to deal with those flaws properly.

    According to my research, Stargate was shot in HD starting with Season 7 Episode 19 (Ressurection). I don't know whether the masters were already created in HD. Maybe someone can compare Blu-ray with DVD. In any case, from SG-1 Season 8 and Atlantis Season 1 onwards, both were filmed in digital HD and the masters were also created in digital HD. Before that, as far as I know, the first 3 seasons were shot in 16 mm. And seasons 4-7 in 32 mm film. However, as is known, no HD remaster has been produced yet. It could be that the 16/32 mm film rolls have already been digitally scanned in HD because the film gets worse as it ages. But as we already know, no one has done the work to HD remaster season 1-7 yet...

      @@jonny-b4954 Yeah kinda. I also think it's bad for writers. In older shows you had a writing staff and they were there for years on end and younger writers were learning from more experienced ones (ideally) and would go on to (hopefully) become good showrunners themselves even and reach younger writers there. A show could grow and find its voice and when a couple of episodes turned out not good it wasn't that big of a deal at 22 or 26 episodes. And it not only pushed but also encourage new ideas and not repeating oneself. Nowadays it seems staff writers only work in short bursts for any given show and submit maybe 1-2 scripts at most and then the show is done. It's easier not to repeat yourself and therefore doesn't push creativity as much (which might sound contradictory) and when an episode or 2 in a season isn't good, it is already 25+% of the seasons. On the other hand they can take more time to really develop the stories and really make each episode pop. I bet it feels more like developing a movie or maybe in the case of Star Trek Strange New Worlds ten short movies rather than a television series.
      Even sitcoms are now adopting this model. How I Met Your Father only has 10 episodes per season and while I don't think the show is Bad it isn't that excellent to warrant this little episodes and it always feels like you're watching half a season or less.

Let me explain: generally, these bockest go for one of two things: efficiency and bombast deluxe feel. The Middle-Earth Collection goes for the latter and probably better than any other boxset I know. The faux-leather books, the wooden shelf, a replica of the red book complete with Alan Lee/ John Howe/ Daniel Reeve Pencis drawings.
    This one goes for efficiency. And my, 17 seasons and 354 Episodes in these tiny cases, very secure in those soft sleeves that probably won't scratch at all ever. And still the Discs and booklets have all the info you need to navigate the discs. It's frankly awesome. I'm really honest here. At that price range it's probably cheaper to buy it in disc form than subscribe to another streamer but I do think streaming is the most convenient format, the trouble is no streaming service will ever carry the show permanently because licenses expire eventually and aren't always renewed.

    Yes. I want to save shelf space. So I bought the full white sets of SG1 & SGA, the collector's box set, the BD set of SG1 and both the DVD and BD versions of SGU, Ark of Truth, Continuum.....and 3 copies of the original Stargate movie (DVD Collector's, Anniversary and BD). Oh....and the DVD of the cartoon that shan't be mentioned. I maybe, just barely, have enough room for this new set. Although, I'm leaning to getting the individual shows, rather than the box set. I like the idea of the individual sleeves. And nothing beats the collector's gold box visually. (Pro tip: Take a picture of that stargate with a flash....and it look like an actual puddle.) So yeah...save shelf space!! LMAO

    • @GateWorldDotNet
      @GateWorldDotNet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both the DVD edition and this Blu-ray set have the original Showtime version (16:9, with nudity) -- not the 2009 "Final Cut."
      The Blu-ray has the longer version of "Threads" in Season 8 (with a running time around 64 minutes). This was excluded from the original DVD release, after which MGM did a disc replacement program by mail. So on DVD both versions are out there, and I couldn't tell you what version you'll get if you buy it.

    • @ilurvemv

      @@GateWorldDotNet That's what I thought, thanks for confirming! Walmart (the actual Walmart warehouse, not a third party seller) has the individual original dvds of each season of SG-1 averaging $8.99-9.99 except season 8 which is either on backorder or sold out. I'm in no way a picture/sound snob and I have no blu-ray player so if I wanted to buy the show, I'd probably go with this which seems like a good value for a new or casual fan. The only problem is it looks like I won't know which version of Threads I'd get. :( I wonder if this late in the game MGM would still do a disc replacement if it's the shorter version but somehow I doubt it, they're probably out of discs by now or wouldn't reply. The irritating thing is I've never gotten to watch the full version of Threads because I watched for the first time on streaming and neither Netflix nor Amazon had the full version - I figured I could just pick up the dvds if they're that cheap (once they're back in stock) but now it looks like those are guaranteed not to have the full version either ugh.

    What I would like is a legitimate and legal way of purchasing digital copies that you can download and keep on your own media server like Plex. Having boxed versions is cool from collector's PoV, but from user experience point of view it's awful. Nowadays when you can have a media box in your closet and then access it from any device in your house or even from outside.
    Steam did something like this for games. Time to do it for shows and movies and music.
    And no, streaming platforms is not the same, as you don't own the data, they just let you peek at it for a limited amount of time, and can take it away at any moment or go out of business. Not the same.

    • @GateWorldDotNet
      @GateWorldDotNet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've also been surprised at how much better these 1080p Blu-rays look over the episodes that Amazon streams. Even with a strong Internet connection, streamers are still going to compress what they are transmitting to you.

    • @nixellion
      @nixellion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GateWorldDotNet Of course they will, they are targeting at mass user, and thus they have a cap on bandwidth they can offer. Like for netflix that's what, 5mbps for 1080p stream on average? You need around 10-20mbps for good quality 1080p video, sometimes even more than that. Not even talking about 4K. There's also probably an issue of storage space, they do need to hold all those videos somewhere, and increasing their average bitrate would exponentially grow their storage space requirements. But for a home network it's all fine, almost everyone has 1gbps LAN, so you can easily stream 4K 200mbps videos from your own NAS.
