The all the major factions in the sphere have lights that shine within them kurita are not evil, compared to the davions they just don't lie about who they are, all houses got dirt on them. I mean, every Great House is, by our modern day example, an expansionist state that does not respect the principles of democratic or sovereign government unless something compels them too, and as I said in another cmment, House Davion is a military dictatorship with an Arthurian fixation strong enough they sometimes even believe that they're more. Each House has in the past committed acts of aggressive warfare, have stifled the democratic will of planetary populations, and employed weapons of mass destruction on one another to such a scale it almost collapsed interstellar civilization, to the extent that BattleTech is as much an interstellar post-apocalypse setting as it is a space opera or military SF work. But of all those five only one was so depraved morally and ethically to slaughter a planetary population *the old-fashioned way*, simply as punishment for living on the planet where their ruler was shot on the battlefield as a legitimate target of war (as opposed to some kind of act of treachery or assassination). And this was not done by the feuding Mariks and their capacity for murderous infighting, the greedy and powermongering Steiners, the repressive police state of House Liao, or the military-worshipping Davions. It was done by House Kurita, the Draconis Combine. The ruler who did it died an old man, too, he wasn't overthrown for his horrific barbarism, or for staining the honor of so many of his soldiers, driving so many to suicide, etc. No, they remained LOYAL to that monstrous butcher, and the unit that performed the massacre even maintains the memory as a source of PRIDE, as they see it as a demonstration of their devout loyalty that they'd commit such dishonorable and evil deeds at the command of the Coordinator. So, yeah, House Davion aren't angels, and if I call them my favorite House, it's mostly just aesthetics and perhaps some consideration that they are one closest to my personal moral beliefs and ethics. But don't tell me there's no "bad guys", or that House Kurita are on the same moral plane as their neighbors. Maybe that was an intent of the devs at one point, to have a setting of gray, but if that was their intent, they really, really shouldn't have decided to make House Kurita the War Crimes o'Clock faction. Which, in the later Dark Ages time period, *they still are*. The slaughtered Pope of New Avalon's Catholic Church is but one of many testaments to *that*.

The best of the Great Houses, in my opinion. Kurita delivers the "neo-feudal space empires" that the lore describes best. I also enjoy how, unlike others, Kurita remains truest to what they were created to be, never really bending to be "bad guys" or "good guys." They are the Draconis Combine, House Kurita, and they always will be.
All this song made me think of was what could have been... if instead of committing to the Exodus Kerensky had decided to make an example out of one of the Houses and picked Kurita as that target. Star League would have been restored for the other Houses would have fallen in line at such an incredible display of just what the quarter of the SLDF could do and would do if provoked further and they would have relinquished all former Star League worlds regardless of resources used on them knowing that, if they failed to do so, they'd be next, and rightly so. I know some people will freak out and say "But restoring Star League at what cost?!" 1: Look at what happened to the remnants of Star League given the road Kerensky chose to go down. Admirable though his goals were, incredible though the man was, laying the smack down on Kurita is still, in my opinion, a far better option than what the alternative ended up being. 2: Star League had checked the ambitions of the Houses before, it was in its job description. Given the sheer fragging hubris of the Houses in standing back the way they did for as long as they did (some even gently opposing Kerensky) an example needed to be made to remind them of who the big dog was and how epically they had failed. Though Marik comes as a second to the House needing to be made an example out of the most, Kurita wins that spot handsomely, especially given how they were the first to start jumping on Hegemony worlds and taking them for themselves. And may I remind you, Kerensky had, in my opinion, arguably done far worst to the Periphery at the beginning of this conflict then he would have done to Kurita at this point, and they had as well been technically Star League citizens, but what the SLDF did to them was utterly unjustified, what Kerensky would do to Kurita would be utterly justified. What could have been, had Kerensky had one final hoorah in him, saw the need to make an example and had the final bit of willpower to see that through to its end. What could have been...
But why house Kurita in specific? They weren't responsible for Amaris, and all the rest are just as guilty of not interfering. If you want to hit a house that's a right shithole, attack the Cappellans. Fuckers brainwash their own citizens and see them as property of the state. Not even the Dragon is that bad.

Star League was absolutely everything they had left, the thought of civilian was repulsive to many of them. They, at this point, would have followed Kerensky to the Gates of Hell, and they would have followed him to humble a mere one of the Great Houses that sat back and watched them suffer as they burnt Amaris to the ground without a second thought. And the fact that it was a Former Nation would only encourage them to fight it given that they sat back and just watched Star League burn... that would not have stayed their hand but instead almost forced it. And the Houses weren't in the "right" for sitting back and letting the Hegemony brutally die in the horrible way it did just because of the final First Lord of Star League, the weren't right to watch billions of people die because of the actions of one foolish man of even a series of foolish and tyrannical First Lords, they'd be right to be glad that House Cameron had come to an end, but that's where that right begins and ends. The Draconis Combine, a relatively sparsely populated nation in the BattleTech Universe. Unable to match their opponents industry, wealth, and numbers, they fight with zeal and sheer courage. What is relatively unique, is that the Combine is generally united by common culture (barring the ever-rebellious Rasalhague district). In terms of sheer willpower and drive to succeed, none can match the Dragon. Only the Star League could tame the Dragon, and they are long dead. Combine warriors are unmatched in willingness to die for victory, and have turned the tide against many of the most formidable forces in BT history. The Dragon is also one of the most flexible in strategic vision, willing to make the choices that others would consider too risky, often stealing victory from the jaws of defeat.
I believe the Clanners and Capellans might disagree on some of those points, particularly willingness to fight with great zeal. Marik and Davion would try to argue that they've kept their states functional (well...mostly) despite imposing a single culture on their subjects. Steiner would boast they don't need to match anyone's zeal, prowess or tactics since they can literally just bury their opponents in equipment. And Comstar-*[REDACTED]*
I'd also posit that the Combine is also the most honest nation of the bunch. They're the only nation the truly owns up to its crimes, instead of excusing them to save face. Like ComS--[REDACTED]

Just that someone stopped Fire Lord Ozai from his mass murdering. During one of the big conflicts of the setting, when their ruler of the time - Minoru Kurita - went out in a lower ranking officer uniform to a battlefield on an occupied world called Kentares, he got sniped by an enemy soldier. His son and heir Jinjiro ordered the planet's entire population be slaughtered in reprisal. And his soldiers obeyed. When some of them leaked news to the rest of the known galaxy, the leakers were all executed as traitors. After five months, 90% of the planet's population had been exterminated, numbering about 52 million dead. And unlike the rest of the mass death in the setting, it wasn't from nukes or biochem warfare, it was straight up soldiers going street to street across the planet, murdering anyone in their path.

I like Kurita due to the fact that despite being evil by many metrics, they are very competent, and their aesthetic works well with their actions.
I kind of like them because they're honest about it. Everyone else going "Oh we're actually not bad and we just want to have peace and prosperity and oh did i just invade your worlds, I'm sorry... give it back? Give what back?"
And Kurita is just like "... dude I just want to rule the Inner Sphere, period. It's mine now. Even if I have to kick your mechs in the face to make it happen."

The all the major factions in the sphere have lights that shine within them kurita are not evil, compared to the davions they just don't lie about who they are, all houses got dirt on them.
As alot of people quite tex then I will quote him aswell, "I find war fighting ideology is matter of what you can hide from the public, cause at the end of the day in the inner sphere it's about you and yours and smoking craters tell no tales."
Remember never believe in davion propaganda least you forget that they used the lyrans for their own war and that the 4th succession war was a war on davions own enemies and non of stieners.
I mean, every Great House is, by our modern day example, an expansionist state that does not respect the principles of democratic or sovereign government unless something compels them too, and as I said in another cmment, House Davion is a military dictatorship with an Arthurian fixation strong enough they sometimes even believe that they're more. Each House has in the past committed acts of aggressive warfare, have stifled the democratic will of planetary populations, and employed weapons of mass destruction on one another to such a scale it almost collapsed interstellar civilization, to the extent that BattleTech is as much an interstellar post-apocalypse setting as it is a space opera or military SF work.
But of all those five only one was so depraved morally and ethically to slaughter a planetary population *the old-fashioned way*, simply as punishment for living on the planet where their ruler was shot on the battlefield as a legitimate target of war (as opposed to some kind of act of treachery or assassination). And this was not done by the feuding Mariks and their capacity for murderous infighting, the greedy and powermongering Steiners, the repressive police state of House Liao, or the military-worshipping Davions. It was done by House Kurita, the Draconis Combine. The ruler who did it died an old man, too, he wasn't overthrown for his horrific barbarism, or for staining the honor of so many of his soldiers, driving so many to suicide, etc. No, they remained LOYAL to that monstrous butcher, and the unit that performed the massacre even maintains the memory as a source of PRIDE, as they see it as a demonstration of their devout loyalty that they'd commit such dishonorable and evil deeds at the command of the Coordinator.
So, yeah, House Davion aren't angels, and if I call them my favorite House, it's mostly just aesthetics and perhaps some consideration that they are one closest to my personal moral beliefs and ethics. But don't tell me there's no "bad guys", or that House Kurita are on the same moral plane as their neighbors. Maybe that was an intent of the devs at one point, to have a setting of gray, but if that was their intent, they really, really shouldn't have decided to make House Kurita the War Crimes o'Clock faction. Which, in the later Dark Ages time period, *they still are*. The slaughtered Pope of New Avalon's Catholic Church is but one of many testaments to *that*.

Fedcom tried to cripple the dragon, only to leave combine space with fewer men than they had when entering said territory. Clan smoke jaguar and nova cat attempted to "slay the dragon" at Luthien, only to leave the planet while clan smoke jaguar's military was badly crippled. The Draconis Combine may be jerks but when faced with extinction, they will be kicking and punching before they lose.
Combine only won at Luthien because Hanse Davion sent the two biggest mercenary companies in the Inner Sphere to help them.

The best of the Great Houses, in my opinion. Kurita delivers the "neo-feudal space empires" that the lore describes best. I also enjoy how, unlike others, Kurita remains truest to what they were created to be, never really bending to be "bad guys" or "good guys." They are the Draconis Combine, House Kurita, and they always will be.
All this song made me think of was what could have been... if instead of committing to the Exodus Kerensky had decided to make an example out of one of the Houses and picked Kurita as that target. Star League would have been restored for the other Houses would have fallen in line at such an incredible display of just what the quarter of the SLDF could do and would do if provoked further and they would have relinquished all former Star League worlds regardless of resources used on them knowing that, if they failed to do so, they'd be next, and rightly so.
I know some people will freak out and say "But restoring Star League at what cost?!" 1: Look at what happened to the remnants of Star League given the road Kerensky chose to go down. Admirable though his goals were, incredible though the man was, laying the smack down on Kurita is still, in my opinion, a far better option than what the alternative ended up being. 2: Star League had checked the ambitions of the Houses before, it was in its job description. Given the sheer fragging hubris of the Houses in standing back the way they did for as long as they did (some even gently opposing Kerensky) an example needed to be made to remind them of who the big dog was and how epically they had failed. Though Marik comes as a second to the House needing to be made an example out of the most, Kurita wins that spot handsomely, especially given how they were the first to start jumping on Hegemony worlds and taking them for themselves.
And may I remind you, Kerensky had, in my opinion, arguably done far worst to the Periphery at the beginning of this conflict then he would have done to Kurita at this point, and they had as well been technically Star League citizens, but what the SLDF did to them was utterly unjustified, what Kerensky would do to Kurita would be utterly justified.
What could have been, had Kerensky had one final hoorah in him, saw the need to make an example and had the final bit of willpower to see that through to its end. What could have been...
But why house Kurita in specific? They weren't responsible for Amaris, and all the rest are just as guilty of not interfering. If you want to hit a house that's a right shithole, attack the Cappellans. Fuckers brainwash their own citizens and see them as property of the state. Not even the Dragon is that bad.

@@shoulderpyro True, they weren't responsible, they sure as frag were responsible for sitting by and doing nothing for the entirety of that war, all the Houses were, would have loved for Kerensky to humble them instead of, well, what he did do. Hindsight is 20/20 of course, but they absolutely would have deserved it (and let us not forget the 4 succession wars that came after, Kerensky could have prevented that whole catastrophe as well.)

@@Dogue83 Dude, are you kidding? They were, if anything, all in at this point. War was all they knew now, most of them didn't have homes left, didn't have families. Star League was absolutely everything they had left, the thought of civilian was repulsive to many of them.
They, at this point, would have followed Kerensky to the Gates of Hell, and they would have followed him to humble a mere one of the Great Houses that sat back and watched them suffer as they burnt Amaris to the ground without a second thought.
And the fact that it was a Former Nation would only encourage them to fight it given that they sat back and just watched Star League burn... that would not have stayed their hand but instead almost forced it.
And the Houses weren't in the "right" for sitting back and letting the Hegemony brutally die in the horrible way it did just because of the final First Lord of Star League, the weren't right to watch billions of people die because of the actions of one foolish man of even a series of foolish and tyrannical First Lords, they'd be right to be glad that House Cameron had come to an end, but that's where that right begins and ends. Sitting back and watching billions of people suffer and under Amaris makes the "Great" Houses no better than all the First Lords of House Cameron, makes them no better than Amaris himself.

The Draconis Combine, a relatively sparsely populated nation in the BattleTech Universe. Unable to match their opponents industry, wealth, and numbers, they fight with zeal and sheer courage. What is relatively unique, is that the Combine is generally united by common culture (barring the ever-rebellious Rasalhague district).
In terms of sheer willpower and drive to succeed, none can match the Dragon. Only the Star League could tame the Dragon, and they are long dead. Combine warriors are unmatched in willingness to die for victory, and have turned the tide against many of the most formidable forces in BT history. The Dragon is also one of the most flexible in strategic vision, willing to make the choices that others would consider too risky, often stealing victory from the jaws of defeat.
I believe the Clanners and Capellans might disagree on some of those points, particularly willingness to fight with great zeal.
Marik and Davion would try to argue that they've kept their states functional (well...mostly) despite imposing a single culture on their subjects.
Steiner would boast they don't need to match anyone's zeal, prowess or tactics since they can literally just bury their opponents in equipment.
And Comstar-*[REDACTED]*
I'd also posit that the Combine is also the most honest nation of the bunch. They're the only nation the truly owns up to its crimes, instead of excusing them to save face.

Fire Nation as it was at the height of the Hundred Years War but basically starting that way and, with one brief exception, never ever improving. Just that someone stopped Fire Lord Ozai from his mass murdering.
During one of the big conflicts of the setting, when their ruler of the time - Minoru Kurita - went out in a lower ranking officer uniform to a battlefield on an occupied world called Kentares, he got sniped by an enemy soldier. His son and heir Jinjiro ordered the planet's entire population be slaughtered in reprisal. And his soldiers obeyed. When some of them leaked news to the rest of the known galaxy, the leakers were all executed as traitors.
After five months, 90% of the planet's population had been exterminated, numbering about 52 million dead. And unlike the rest of the mass death in the setting, it wasn't from nukes or biochem warfare, it was straight up soldiers going street to street across the planet, murdering anyone in their path.
