I still play Ys to this day. It looks surprisingly good on a 37" LCD. The best part, which I always show my friends, is the cutscene between book 1 and 2. I don't care if you get it on Famicom, PC, or Wii, they just can't compare to the TGCD version in that respect. The PC port, which I believe is used for several other platforms, almost skips the transition entirely. So if you want to see this game at its best, you actually have to go BACK to an old system.
@27backspace If you take your time......I mean, I completed it the first time in fifteen hours. Since then I've knocked that time down. You know? I'm sure that's debatable. Thanks for watching!
Discovered these on the Virtual Console and have fallen IN LOVE with the series since. Ys Seven was amazing. Ys: The Oath in Felghana was phenomenal. Can't wait for the big remake of the two, Ys I & II Chronicles, in February. It's worth me owning an PSP just for this franchise. And I found it all through the re-release of this TG-16 masterpiece. I do wish you didn't spend so long in that final castle, though! Damn that thing is big.
Thought about picking this one up simply because the soundtrack is great. On a side note, I thought it was pretty funny that the music that plays when you get a key item sounds exactly like the music that plays when you get a power up in Metriod!
I always pronounced this "Why's". Had no idea it was pronounced "EEE's" Great review as always. Its nice to see these CD's based games since I only own a lowly TG-16 :)
Just got to this review-- another balanced, entertaining, and informative review! Played the DS remake myself, and so I 'got' a lot of what you were talking about. Keep up the great work, Chris! Looking forward to the next review already !:)
Back in the day, this was one of my greatest video gaming moment. Listening to very memorable tunes in CD quality combined with the incredible voice acting and compelling storyline. The sequel Y's III was a bit of a disappointment. However, I highly recommend the fan (text) translated Y's IV also for PC Engine. A truly worthy sequel.
Omg this game is awesome. I was just describing it to my son and luckily i found this review. Brings back so many memories. If i still had my system id play it now..lol
This made my past childhood glee!!! I never got a chance to play this game because I only had the basic Turbo Graphix as a kid. But my boyfriend and I own a duo and the Y's games, and this really makes me want to play it now!
Yaaaay! I've been looking forward to this review, as I'm a real die-hard Falcom fan. And it couldn't have come at much of a better time, since... well, did you know I work for XSEED Games? And we're releasing the PSP remake of this game, "Ys I & II Chronicles," in North America in about two months' time. So Ys I & II is super-fresh in my mind right now, having just edited all the game's dialogue! If you get a chance, you should check it out once it's released. It's a fantastic remake!
Between your review and Happy Console Gamer's review, I had to download this off the Wii Shop Channel for my birthday yesterday and may I say "Thank You" to both of you for your awesome reviews that made me just have to check out this game.
Great review Chris! I absolutely loved this game in my younger days. It was so far ahead of it's time and such a beautiful game. I loved your commentary on the music!
I remember playing the iso of this game on Emu before i had a duo and a real copy. I almost burned my food, because i was trying to play and cook at the same time. Damn...amazing!
I fell in love with this game and stayed up late many a night playing it back in the day. They need to re-release this on the 360 or PS3 its a classic and was ahead of its time in many aspects.
I was so excited to get these 2 games as a pack in when I bought my DUO from TZD. I almost bought the original print for the TGCD used from a store called PharMor. They had an in store rental and when they were going out of business they began selling their rental stock cheap. I was getting all kinds of used tg16 chip games from sometimes for 3 and 4 dollars a piece. Those had no case or manual. But even the ones that did were under 10. But they didn't have many of those left by the time I learned they were selling turbo games. So when I saw YS 1 and 2 on the shelf with a black and white photo copied manual I knew it was an RPG. After seeing neutopia 1 and 2 and dungeon explorer I was looking for more RPG's on the system. So I asked about it not knowing it was a CD. When I found out, I opted not to get it because I didn't have, and couldn't find the cd add on. So the fact that this was a pack in with the DUO was a selling point for me. And the manual, at least the cover art was in color. But I remember it was different than the photo copied cover I saw on the original printing. It seemed to have cover art that looked more like that girl holding the blue orb. So that was what I recognized when I started it up and knew I was playing the same game I seen back on the shelf of pharmor 3 or 4 years prior to ordering my duo to upgrade.
HI CHRIS ! ANOTHER GREAT REVIEW AS ALWAYS ! I STILL HAVE Y'S 1-3, AND BEAT THEM ALL ! I RECENTLY PICKED UP A COUPLE Y'S GAMES FOR MY PSP ! I REALLY HOPE THAT Y'S 4 GETS AN AMERICAN RELEASE FOR THE PSP SOMEDAY TOO !!!! IN MY OPINION RPG GAMES THAT ARE NOT IN ENGLISH, ARE PRETTY MUCH IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT. I WAS SO PISSED THAT Y'S 4 WAS NEVER BROUGHT TO THE U.S.A !! CAN'T WAIT TO BUY YOUR NEXT DVD WHEN IT COMES OUT ! HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS MAN !! LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT REVIEW ! TAKE CARE !
@squirm13 Yeah...there is just a really cool "cut scene" mostly bridging the two books. In the end, it really doesn't matter. The whole game is what I definitely love. Ha ha. :) Thanks for watching!
Great review. Looking back on this game and what an immense challenge it was (I bought it back in 91 or 92) I don't know how I ever beat this Goliath of a game. With no internet or strategy guide (that I'm aware of) I don't know how I got through it. BTW, did you know that you can put the disc in a standard CD player and listen to the soundtrack? Not all TG-CD discs had this feature, but Y's 1 and 2 did, thankfully. NEC never advertised this, I discovered it a few years ago.
Hey Spida, you should definitely get Xak I.II for the Pc-Engine. I recommend it to Ys fans, and it should only set like 10 bucks or so. Good buy. The Japanese language is not a issue, because like Ys books, the objectives are not complex. Also, there is a guide on gamefaqs. Would love to see an import review on this game.
Ys Book I & II has to be my favorite game on the Turbo CD. It was a great influence in my buying a Turbo Duo. I absolutely love the Ys series, even more so than the Legend of Zelda series.
I do have this game (kind of) for the DS. Thankfully, that version was graced with also an excellent localization (curtosey of Atlus USA), better visuals, and a free soundtrack CD. Stll, in my opinion, no matter which version you get, definitely experience them!
This has always been my favorite RPG... i love it more so than anything square enix can produce (at least for me). Story line alone is better than most and the music as you said is phenomenal. Granted i love FF's games, but i always and still do go back to play this one a lot. I hope you review 3 and 4 as well.. I wished there was more of ys beyond 4 for the turbo duo and wish someone would make more for the system, just because.
I think i may consider getting this even though the Only Ys game i Played was Ys the Ark of Napishtim for the PS2.(Which was Great) the review nearly Sold me.
Great review! I never played this but I have played a couple of it's sequels, mainly Ys III on the SNES many moons ago. Didn't care much for that. Recently though, I got Ys: Ark of Napishim for the PS2 and I enjoy it a lot.
@oRecluse99o Downloading this on virtual console takes up like 280 blocks of memory compared to the 20-30 blocks needed for most other retro games... so I'd say it is complete, but I haven't played it throiugh yet. This was an awesome review, This version looks awesome. I have only previously played book 1 on the Sega Master System, and that is one of my favorite games of all time.
@GriffoliansGames Ha ha. He's up there somewhere. He told me that he burned my review to a DVD and grabbed some popcorn and watched it on his big screen. LOL!
@naikanomtom Yeah....I was thinking about swapping to a 4.5 because of a few issues I have with it. But, it's such a fantastic well-rounded experience that....it overshadows anything I didn't care for. You know? Ha ha. Happy Holidays my friend.
Great review Chris, have you tried the remake of this game Ys I and II Complete for the PC? It's awesome, it's in Japanese however there is a fan translation patch, the new PC version covers the story a lot better in my opinion, but I've been a die hard Ys fan since it came out. Can't wait for the Ys III review.
BTW, I think I might have asked this before, but do you plan on reviewing Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys at any point? It's a PC-Engine import, and an RPG, but there IS an English patch available for it, so with a bit of finagling you WOULD be able to play the game in English on your PC-Engine. I ask because if you haven't PLAYED it... well, you really, really should. Not only is it one of the best Ys games (and a return to form after Ys III), but one of the best RPGs of the 16-bit era. It's amazing.
I'd like to see a reY's on the 360. I don't really understand why this has not been picked up by Microsoft instead of... This would bring ps1ff7-type enthusiasm to the 360.
Ahh Ys 1&2 one of the reason why i got a turbo-cd in the frist place.I remember when the egm buyers guide rate it a 10.Sure looking at that score now seems rather overrated but i think it was warrented spida.Ys 1&2 is one arpg that i play many times, over again spida it's just that good to me.Simple gameplay great voice acting and yes a excellent sound track. It's a shame the serise is over looked in the u.s spida. When people think Ys they think of part 3 for the genesis&snes.
yeah! some brothers think that sony be the first to introduce optical disk media to games , but nec are the first one. . ys 1 & 2 represent a new birth on games quality. i still think that are enought room in the marked for a 2-d console with a lot of ram and fx .
@atarileaf Same here my friend. Same here. I got corrected by someone quite high up about how to pronounce it....he was pretty adamant. Ha ha. :) Have a great one!
@katsujinken10 Nah, I think you're okay without the instructions. It's just the story was crammed onto the one page...everything else you can easily figure out I think. Thanks!
So should I hold out for a copy with the instructions since they crammed so much in the booklet? Because as I was saying there's a copywithout at a local store & without it pff I might as well just burn myself a copy.
@will1977a I know. It was a tough one. You had to beat this one without any real help (unless your buddy was good at it and could call him, ha ha). Take care.
***** This is a remade version of the first two games in the series. It's pretty much the best place to start if you want the full story. The more modern games in the series are probably easier on the eyes, but they also refer to events that happened in the older games. So I'd recommend this disc if you can find it.
I’m excited that this game is coming to the TurboGrafx-16 Mini.
I still play Ys to this day. It looks surprisingly good on a 37" LCD. The best part, which I always show my friends, is the cutscene between book 1 and 2. I love these reviews. Something fun to come back to monthly and remember a better time in video gaming.
@27backspace If you take your time......I mean, I completed it the first time in fifteen hours. Since then I've knocked that time down. You know?
I'm sure that's debatable. Thanks for watching!
Best review of Ys ever done!
Discovered these on the Virtual Console and have fallen IN LOVE with the series since. Ys Seven was amazing. Ys: The Oath in Felghana was phenomenal. @Ponimaju Thanks for watching!
@Turrican0815 I try my best. Thanks a lot for watching and subbing!
Hey, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@DctrEvil17 Agreed!!! Thanks for watching!
i love all the covers for tg16 and duo. they look so ancient, but thats what makes them awesome.
Thought about picking this one up simply because the soundtrack is great. On a side note, I thought it was pretty funny that the music that plays when you get a key item sounds exactly like the music that plays when you get a power up in Metriod!
I always pronounced this "Why's". Had no idea it was pronounced "EEE's"

Keep up the great work, Chris! Looking forward to the next review already !:)
great review, i completed book 1, but did not know i was in book 2, as there was not title sequence, which is what i was expecting.
TheRealSkeebo you can download it on an emulator free it's not that hard there are tutorials it runs on most modern laptops and desktops
I got my Turbographx 16 mini preorder. I can't wait to final play this. I couldn't convince my parents that that the cd add-on was nessary.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching and commenting!
This is my first rpg cd games for the system , 😅 already 30 years 😅. Thank you for the video
FANTASTIC game. Actually used the CD-ROM unlike Fighting Street.
Excellent review! I love the Ys series, and I can't wait for Ys I & II Chronicles to be released on PSP in the US this month!
This made my past childhood glee!!! I never got a chance to play this game because I only had the basic Turbo Graphix as a kid. But my boyfriend and I own a duo and the Y's games, and this really makes me want to play it now!
I couldn't wait to get my hands on this game when it came to me in the mail last year. Simply fantastic! Thanks Chris!
Yaaaay! I've been looking forward to this review, as I'm a real die-hard Falcom fan. And it couldn't have come at much of a better time, since... well, did you know I work for XSEED Games? I always thought this game was called "why-s" when I was a kid. This game brought to you by the letter Y
me to lol..
@Polywanacraka Ha ha. There were a few "CDs" off the screen! :) :)
If you have a Turbo CD, you must play Ys 1&2. This game is awesome! Another great review!
I do not believe so. But, I'm sure someone on the PC-Engine FX forums can help out. Thanks for watching!
You have one of the most informative, and entertaining review styles I have seen. Great job on the review!
Between your review and Happy Console Gamer's review, I had to download this off the Wii Shop Channel for my birthday yesterday and may I say "Thank You" to both of you for your awesome reviews that made me just have to check out this game.
Great review! Always a pleasure to watch your vids! Now I finally understand why Big Mike always speaks so highly of Ys!
Terence
All right! It's not a pinball review, but at least you uploaded something! (Sadly, I admit that I've never heard of TurboGrafx.)
Great review Chris! I absolutely loved this game in my younger days. It was so far ahead of it's time and such a beautiful game. I loved your commentary on the music!

@acewindo Thanks a lot. I try my best when I can. Ha ha. Take care.
@oRecluse99o That I don't know. I don't play the Wii versions of the games. If anyone can answer this, please help out. Thanks for watching!!!!!!!
I fell in love with this game and stayed up late many a night playing it back in the day. They need to re-release this on the 360 or PS3 its a classic and was ahead of its time in many aspects.
Probably the best Y's review I've seen. Great job Chris!

@will1977a Any TG-CD game with CDDA tracks, can be played in a normal CD player. Which is *almost* all TG-CD games.
Hey Spida, you should definitely get Xak I.II for the Pc-Engine. I recommend it to Ys fans, and it should only set like 10 bucks or so. Good buy. @slythemagicunicorn Ha ha. Backtracking 7: Formerly Ys Series! :)
Have a great one. Thanks for watching.
Ys Book I & II has to be my favorite game on the Turbo CD. It was a great influence in my buying a Turbo Duo. I absolutely love the Ys series, even more so than the Legend of Zelda series.
excellent review Chris, highly informative and has after about 10 years now convinced me to go out and get it!
Once again, excellent review, brings back so many memories. The bumper car action part is great. Keep up the good work.
I just finished book one. I can’t wait to finish the second one! I actually was surprised that I was at the end once I got there tbh
I love this game! Yeah, some of the backtracking was kinda annoying in both games but you're right about the payoff in the end. Great review again!
I do have this game (kind of) for the DS. Thankfully, that version was graced with also an excellent localization (curtosey of Atlus USA), better visuals, and a free soundtrack CD. Stll, in my opinion, no matter which version you get, definitely experience them!
Totally agreed on the verdict
A solid 5/5
@DynasticHero I am hoping for a late-January release. Look for a pre-order form hopefully mid-of-the-month. :) :)
Adol Christin does not need a sword-swinging button. He is so badass, he just runs into an enemy and it dies. :)
Today i wondered when your new review will come up :} Great review like always,Ys is one of my favorite Action RPG series
This has always been my favorite RPG... i love it more so than anything square enix can produce (at least for me). Story line alone is better than most and the music as you said is phenomenal. Granted i love FF's games, but i always and still do go back to play this one a lot.

@spida1a It most certainly was!! (I've been waiting too!) ... knew there had to be at least one 5-CD calibre game in your collection!
@GriffoliansGames Ha ha. He's up there somewhere. He told me that he burned my review to a DVD and grabbed some popcorn and watched it on his big screen. LOL!
Another top notch review. Thanks man, keep up the good work!
Great review :D Always love watching your reviews.
@naikanomtom Yeah....I was thinking about swapping to a 4.5 because of a few issues I have with it. But, it's such a fantastic well-rounded experience that....it overshadows anything I didn't care for. You know? Ha ha.
Happy Holidays my friend.
Can't wait to give this a run through... Got it with my turbo grafx lot.
Great review Chris, have you tried the remake of this game Ys I and II Complete for the PC? @Huddablueteeth Well...thanks a ton. I try and it's great to have such awesome friends here. Have a good one!
@DragonsAndCarpetbags Ha ha. Wok cooking sounds sweet too! :)
Take care.
I totally agree and was just saying this today in a gamer group I'm in. Loved this game on TurboGrafx 16

@metalcoola Totally. Thanks Metacoola.
@HappyConsoleGamer Good call! I think the same can be said about just about all of Chris' reviews!
@thethirdq Thanks my friend.
Thanks for watching!
Have you ever played Lagoon Chris ? It's said to be similar to Ys (which I have not yet played) and I realy liked it myself.
@profhojo74 No, I have not had a chance to play it. But, I heard great things. :)
Wow! Nicely done!
I'd like to see a reY's on the 360. I don't really understand why this has not been picked up by Microsoft instead of... This would bring ps1ff7-type enthusiasm to the 360.

@atarileaf Same here my friend. Same here. I got corrected by someone quite high up about how to pronounce it....he was pretty adamant. Ha ha. :)
Have a great one!
Another awesome review Chris and i hope all is well and Merry Christmas. : )
I have this for my Wii , great remake. Love the soundtrack
@katsujinken10 Nah, I think you're okay without the instructions. It's just the story was crammed onto the one page...everything else you can easily figure out I think. Thanks!
Wow. This Game Is Also A Must Download On The Virtual Console. It Looks So Extremely Epic.
Y's is legendary! i wish dearly that someday i, too, can partake!
You are totally right. Thanks again!
I'm really hoping that this gets released on the Wii U before Nintendo discontinues the Wii U's online services.
Any Ys games on Any Nintendo console would be great honestly
So should I hold out for a copy with the instructions since they crammed so much in the booklet? Because as I was saying there's a copywithout at a local store & without it pff I might as well just burn myself a copy.
I always wondered how to pronounce the name of this title when I was younger. Now I know! Thanks.
Greatest music on the Turbo16!
@will1977a I know. It was a tough one. You had to beat this one without any real help (unless your buddy was good at it and could call him, ha ha). Take care.
@talelendil Ha ha. Have a great one!
