Nice, pretty and simple accent stitch. An easy way to add a little color variation and to use up some extra yarn that's lying around but not enough to make a major project. I prefer your first method unless you're using bobbins, in which case, you can cut and weave in loose ends. You could also tie the V stitch before weaving in the loose ends.
