    I have a 2021 K67 S1000RR. I have to agree with your opinion concerning the smoothness of these BMW engines. I used to ride exclusively CBR1000RRs and the first time I started this bike I thought I started an old Farm tractor. Everything vibrates and sounds a bit like someone forgot a 10mm socket in that engine. That being said, once you ride it and hit a few twisties, you don't hear (or care) about all of that anymore. The ride is sublime, agile, comfortable, and tons of power.

    I fitted a Socal Motorwerks manual cam chain tensioner, great quality and it hasn’t leaked at all, done about 40,000 miles with it and adjusted it 2 times so far.

    Hey Old Mechanic. If you think the S1000R rattles loud for a few seconds when it starts up, wait until you hear the F800GT's transmission after it's warmed up to full operating temperature, with the clutch out. Sounds like a bunch of bolts in a shaking tin can. The Japanese manufactures are much better at building quiet/smooth running motorcycle engines than BMW is.

    6:49 I had a ZZR1100, the best bike I've ever owned, and the one I regret selling most.
    Over 50,000 miles, and it still looked like new. Totally reliable. Comfortable. Speed? All the cliches apply.
    Easy to work on. Parts reasonable, and you only need consumables.
    Weakness? The OEM headlight - akin to a birthday cake candle! Dangerous on a slow bike, crazy on this 'ICBM'!
    Sorted with a HiD kit, which was a revelation!

    • @kwakkers68
      @kwakkers68 ปีที่แล้ว

      I replaced this with a K1200S - which I did love, but the complexity made me nervous,
      and I didn't like being obliged to let the dealer service - to keep in line with the warranty terms,
      and eventual re-sale value.... I swapped it for a ZX-9R (and cash) and was happy again!

      Hi E'I, when you got that same rattleling sound when starting the bike its the oil pressurised cam chain tensioner. I can asure you that its an easy job to exchange it for a manual can chain tensioner. Just get the rear wheel up.. put the bike in gear and rotate the wheel in riding forward.
      So your cam chain is having its max slack.
      Then screw out the old one, and have the new manual one ready. Besure to put some liquit gasket on the threat of the bold, that is pushing at the cam chain rail..! The o-ring starts to leak
      is my expirience. Then screw THAT bold out as far as possible. Put the new cam chain tensioner in, with the 2 little bolds and tightening them.
      Then with your fingers screw the long bold inwards, until you feel some pressure, then one turn out again. Start up the engine, and then start to screw it in, until that rattleing sound is gone.. after that just screw it a tiny bit out again
      just before that rattleing starts again.. Block it with the nut.. JOB done.

      Hi Ed, I just don't know why that manufactures make these kind of oil presurised cam chain tensioners.. as a lot of times that simply doesn't work well. When its new they work.. yeah.. Thanks for your comment. My friend has a Triumph Tiger,
      but at this moment its good, but I am going to tell him to keep it in mind, and maybe just change it for that APE tensioner upfront !

      One more note. If your friend with the Tiger has this problem, instead of installing the APE , a firm in the UK sells a stronger spring. Which will keep the automatic feature.. I would have went this route, but importing to the States would have cost more than the APE.
      All the best.

    Hi, your video is just I was looking for for weeks :) I have a ‘09 BMW K1300S and it started the same rattling noise on startup couple of weeks ago. The bike was standing in my garage for months. But before never done it even though it was standing there for the whole winter. Should I go ahead and change the tensioner straight away or should I get it checked for other issues with a mechanic? Also, as I read in your other comment is it true that the factory tensioner doesn’t let the chain slip a tooth even though it’s failed and the rattling noise is only on startup ( I believe the oil pressure builds back when the engine is running) I just want to make sure that doesn’t happen if I have to take it to have it checked. Thanks for your answer. Have a great day!

    Ive put manual tensioners on all my bikes, thinking of doing it on this aswell. as far as install goes, on most bikes you have to set the engine to TDC and remove the valve cover to install the tensioner. did you have to do that for this? or do you simply unscrew the old tensioner and install the new one?

    • @TheOldMechanic
      @TheOldMechanic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steven what I did was put the bike on a motorcycle stand, with its rear whell off the ground, put it in gear (engine off) then rotate the wheel in forward riding position, so the cam chain has its max slack on the tensioner side.
      Then screw the old one out, and put the new one in, but with the tensioning bolt all the was out.
      Then gently screw it inwards until you feel that it goes against the cam chain. NOT to tight ofcourse. Then start and warm up the engine and slowly 'tweak' the new tensioning bolt, until that rattling noise just dissapear. Thats all.

      @@TheOldMechanic How do you know when the cam chain have max slack?

    • @TheOldMechanic
      @TheOldMechanic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tomer, its like your drive chain, when you drive the power goes from the engine to your rear wheel, so the chain slack is at the bottom. So for your cam chain, its a bit the same. Put the rear wheel off the ground,
      then put the bike in gear, and rotate the wheel in the driving direction.
      Ofcourse by hand, and with the engine NOT running. Then the cam chain its slack is on the cam chain tensioner side. Easy huh 😉
