    The REAL lesson here is regardless of the ball and distance, you still have to hit a good shot! A bad shot is a bad shot.

      Exactly its hard to do a proper ball comparison without a really controlled test i.e taking out human error i could hit 2 pro V1's and have a difference in range of 20+ yards easily just because ill never hit them perfectly the same each time

    Not all range balls are the same, but TXG just did a video comparing the Taylormade TP5 (not as long as the TP5x like the ProV1x) and a Taylormade Range Ball. They hit a Wedge a 6 iron and a Driver. The HARD cover and the HARD core (to make it last) had very different effects on the 3 clubs. This is what they found out and speculated:
    1) With the Wedge, the HARD cover made the ball slip up the wedge's face causing a significantly higher launch and also the ball came out with only half the spin (5000 vs 10,000 rpms) and secondly, the HARD core, didn't allow the ball to compress with slower swinging speed wedges so the ball flew significantly shorter
    2) With the Driver, the Hard core allowed the ball to be long off a driver (won't be Prov1x long) but it wasn't that short on ball speed compared to the TP5, but the very Hard cover, combined with a Strong lofted Driver face, they surmised created a slip and grip effect, generating MORE spin on the Driver, and thus the higher spinning Driver carried shorter than with the TP5. They also stated that if you fit a Driver with a Range Ball, and find a Spin Rate that is optimal (2100-2000) but then use a Premium Ball which will spin lower on a Driver, you may find that you now don't generate enough spin to stop curvature and your Premium Ball might fall out of the sky if you are lower spinning Range Ball Driver Person
    3) The 6 iron tended to produce basically normal numbers (slightly lower spinning), but basically it was ok.
    For me personally, these results had huge implications as the Driver spin numbers gave me information I needed to understand why my Driver with a Premium Ball could dive bomb hook as I was tweaking my Driver loft lower and lower to get that long flat flight with a range ball (which is higher spinning off the driver) but was just not enough loft with my gamer ball. It also confince me NEVER to practice my chipping & pitching with Range Balls because there is just ZERO grip with these balls and they do not come off the face a wedge with any grip that creates that lower flight - and thus you have not only no idea how your wedge practice with range balls will transfer to your real game - it actually hurts your real game because the shots will not come off the club face or land on the green in remotely the same manner. Practice your technique at a range with your mid irons - and then never use those balls again if you want to improve. My guess is that this Strata Range Ball may been range limited by design - or just hit 100,000x to much and had no life left.

    • @CMBelite-FR
      @CMBelite-FR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends there is range ball considered as " soft" by T where the ball will spinning way more than a v1, thus being shorter, my spin on 6i is generally 6000-6500 rpm, but with soft range ball, spin was 8000/8500 on TM, so +2000/+2500 compared to a prov1

    Great video. Depending on the range ball, there can be a 5-10% reduction in distance vs. a premium golf ball, per several different knowledgeable sources. When I go to the range, I'm less concerned about the distance with range balls than I am with ball flight and direction. I'm more focused on strike and accuracy. With all the rounds of golf I've played with premium balls, I pretty much know my carry distances, and can hit those consistently provided I've grooved my strike pattern with all my clubs.

    I played Pro V1 for years, switched to Vice Tour and prefer the Vice Tour at less than 1/2 the price of the Pro V1. At age 72, I still carry a 9 index or handicap. The Vice has a Surlyn cover vs the Urethane on most “premium” balls and I prefer Surlyn for putting. I find the spin rate on Surlyn to be more than acceptable for my game.

    Always fun stuff, Matt! I'm at a 5 hcp (for the moment) and I play mid-range urethane balls (under $35, eg Tour Response, Wilson Duo Pro, and previous generation B-RX mainly) and also the Titleist Trufeel and Bridgestone E12. Still haven't pulled the trigger to play just one ball, which I know I should do. But it's just fun to try other balls and see what they do! The ONE thing I know for certain is that there's absolutely no need for me to spend $47 a dozen for golf balls. Even the surlyn balls stop just fine on greens for me and perform well with pitching and chipping.

      Try the Maxfli Tour X sold at Dicks or Galaxy, normal price $34.95 or 2 dozen for $50. ,but if you get their email ads or check their websites,you' ll find often during the week 50% off or my favorite Buy 1 get 1 free . I usually buy 2 boxes for $34.95 .
      I find no difference than the overpriced " premium " ball. I'm a 1.2 HC.

    This is a very important question because knowing how far you hit each of your clubs makes a huge difference in your golf game. Most us can not afford a trackman or gc quad so the only way we have to know this information is the driving range. If we do not know exactly how much driving range golf balls are limited we have no way to know how far we will hit the ball on the course. Not having this information is not fair to golfers.

    Great video. Always wondered when using a SC300 or in my case a Mevo to dial in distances. Does using range balls matter? Those devices are supposed to use data and don’t track the ball. My drives with range balls always seem shorter than the course but I didn’t know if that was due to roll , the range balls vs premium ball or over estimating how far I actually hit it. Would love to see a video on that with your SC300.

  • @Garbox80
    @Garbox80 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was told by a golf coach back in 90's that range balls usually go 80-90% percent of the yardage of a proper golf ball. When new that is. A big problem with range balls is that they might already be hit a few hundred times and thus don't perform the same. So no point in trying to figure out your club's yardage there.
    Also, could you do the same with a Wilson Duo Soft or similar ball? Those are about half the price of a premium, but are pretty good in short game. But what's the difference in longer shots etc. (no point for me to try it myself as my game is so inconsistent).

    Very interesting video MSG. I am a single digit hdcp. I have played with Pro V1, mid grade, and the cheapest grade ball about 7 years ago and i found that i could score in the mid 70 on all of those balls. I did my comparison by playing 3 to 5 competitive rounds with each type of the balls and they all worked out just fine for me. But my preference was Wilson Duo and the cheapest brand is the Nitro ball. So for me, i found that playing with Wilson Duo or similar balls or even Nitro is fine by me because i cannot justify paying the extra price at my playing level. But i am glad to see your testing here 👍👍

    Choosing the right ball and playing it consistently has made a noticeable difference in my game. I’ve been playing the same ball model for a while now and I caved and bought some discounted 2 piece balls that were discontinued because I couldn’t pass up the deal. During my weeks of COVID indoor practice, I noticed a huge difference in how the discount ball performed against my regular ball when chipping and putting. I ended up giving the discounted balls away lol.

    Every now and then I pinch a half decent range ball to use for practice on the course. I don't see too much performance difference until you get close to hole. Distance is maybe slightly down, but overall I think you're probably better off with a brand new range ball than a beat up premium ball. Brand premium ball always wins, though. Just a matter of how often you can afford to replace them.

    There Is a HUGE difference if you are a reasonable golfer. It’s not about distance- it’s control. I play hard pan links - the TITLEIST AVX is hopeless at stopping as it just keeps on running. Whereas the TITLEIST PROV gives control and stopping power which is crucial if you don’t want to have to run balls into green from x75yrds with no idea where they will finish on that green.
    However, in the winter in soft/windy conditions the AVX comes into its own and I revert back to that one.

    The test should have been all shots side by side using the same club. That would give a better understanding of the distance differences. Use the club you normaly would for that specific shot and distance for both balls. Plus all range balls are not the same.

    it would have been better if you had compared inexpensive golf balls meeting required manufacturing standards (e.g Nitro balls) with the Pro V. ball. Range balls may not be manufactured to meet the same standards. Another interesting comparison that would be helpful to some would be a top qualify recycled brand balls to the Pro V. Many stores are selling recycled balls now.

    Our range uses Floaters, wonder if they are close to a standard range ball?

    If I see a bruised up or crappy old ball at a course, I'll throw them in my bag and use them at the range. They usually go straighter and further than the regular range balls. Not really a contest though considering most of those range balls are ready for the trash bin.

    As a blade player I can't use hard like brick balls (I still miss hit too many to take that level of abuse to my hands). Maybe they don't exist in the wild anymore, but my shag bucket is full of the old hard junk (replacing them soon). New era Range balls might be softer, I don't know, my last range session was about five years ago--and the balls were hard like rocks. No thanks.

    you should have played both balls with scrabble format. It would have given better results on short game.

    The 20 yard distance is less significant for you. I only hit 180 -200 yards off my drive's. The range ball would probably cause a few more strokes on my game. I have no doubt your skill level could make up for the lost yardage of the range ball.

    Still playing Cut balls, other than the balata-like covers that can be easily shredded they feel just as good as any Titleist.

    Lol, he’s dead on. I just got back from the range, they have strata balls. I’m a new golfer and today I was finally making some good contact with the driver, and it’s going 150 yards? With my current slow clubhead speed I hit my Pinnacle soft balls at least 200. My 7 irons were going 100, where they should be 150. I’m taking range time from now on as just practice time for contact and direction.

    Some range balls are designed to play shorter, not sure about this one.

    • @CMBelite-FR
      @CMBelite-FR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      all range ball are made to play shorter as 98% of course don't have 300+y range like on Tour, so you will generate less ball speed, and sope range ball in the soft category generates like tons of spin, even more than prov1 so you will even lose more distance

  • @ericveiss4959
    @ericveiss4959 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How about accuracy. I was told range balls were made to go shorter in distance but straight down the line. I got a killer slice. Maybe losing some distance to stay on my fairway would be worth playing with a range ball. ???

    • @bryanlina4724
      @bryanlina4724 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry man, range balls still hook and slice. They probably spin less on short pitches around the green and don't compress as well off longer clubs but the still get side spin. Gonna have to fix the slice with the swing.

    • @seanm3226
      @seanm3226 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryan Lina There’s actually no so thing as “side spin”. The ball will always spin on the axis the golfer creates.

    The average golfer has a clubhead speed under 95mph with driver according to trackman stats. If you have a driver speed over 100-105, range balls will be very inferior, sure. That's due partly to being over compressed. Most are around 70 comp. But the average golfer with a handicap of 18 or so will see little to no benefit from a top tier ball, mostly because the increased side spin is damaging to them. Spending 50 bucks a dozen is ludicrous for those players if they can get similar performance from a 1-2 dollar ball. Then again, I like finding expensive balls in the woods, so I guess that's one benefit

    • @DavidMossMGS
      @DavidMossMGS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on your swing speed. Faster the speed harder the ball

  • @CMBelite-FR
    @CMBelite-FR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    you are not comapring apples to apple, range ball are not allowed to be used in competive play, i think it would have been better if you'd compared titleist DT solo Vs ProV1X, titleist lowest prenium ball against titleist highest prenium golf ball, would have make more sense imo. Range ball are made to be way shorter than regular ball beacause most golf course don't have 300+y range so they need baall that don't fly too long.
