Most of the brands are refurbished in the same factory and the process is the same. There are several different grades they use when doing this process. As I’m almost 70 and my swing speed has slowed down, I’ve been playing the Callaway SuperSoft (yellow). I find it’s low compression maximizes my slower swing and the yellow color helps me see it with my 70 y/o eyes. I’ve bought them new (about $20) and refurbed (about $9). I find little difference in their performance. Recently, I’ve also tried the Titleist TourSoft, but see they it’s compression is a bit higher.
Here is what I learned, forget the fact that one is referb, the 2017 model was longer than the 2019. You should test 2019 against a 2017 to see if it is something the referb company is doing, or did Titleist actually get worse as they raised prices?
There's far too many variables in Rick's swing to be able to say that. You wouldn't be able to test that and have any real meaningful results without using a test rig that hit it the same way every time.
I just started playing again a month ago after 10 years of not playing. I use Noodle soft and long but that’s because my horrific slice causes me to lose a lot of them still at this point. I like the feel around the green and putting but feel they lack spin into the green and seem to run a long ways up after they hit.
I'm now curious of the performance differences from a 2017 pro v1 to a 2019 since they clearly changed the internals. Did they purposely reduce the distance and change the cover feel for a more controlled ball?
Just picked up the same exact Prov V1 refurbished and Bridgestone B330 refurbished; same brand and AA rating. They both play extremely well. Bridgestone's even cheaper than the Pro's.
No its that plastic cover! No pro v1 has ever felt clicky! I couldnt use these as the feel was pretty bad for around the green imo. Sure the shot was probably no different but for short chips the ball felt too alive.
Man, I remember growing up, the kids across the street and I had a nice gig going on where, when we'd go fishing down at the creek by the country club, we'd gather golf balls, clean them up, and sell them to golfers for a dollar or two. We made bank, and I had dozens and dozens of golf balls whenever I went golfing with dad. I think I still have a handful of those, all these years later.
Great and informative video. I think I am going to switch to the refurbished Pro V1 golfballs. As it is the price is getting ridiculously expensive for premium golfballs. Thank you Rick.
It's not that im too poor to buy new golf balls it's just that, I'm not that good yet so I hit some in the water etc. All of my golf balls have I found myself. Going out when it's super dark with an UV lamp. The balls shine up like purple dots and it's really satisfying when you find PRO V1's. I've got over 2000 golf balls at home that are random golf balls, going from top flite to callaway super softs to PRO V1. I've got over 400 PRO v1s. That i've found myself, so when I shoot one in the water/hazard. It's not bothering me because I havent spent a penny on the balls.
Dude thanks. Usually when it’s getting to dark. I choose disc golf with glow in the dark discs. H class, gonna start booking later tee times purposely.
I've been out twice at night with my UV torch. Found 127 balls the first time and 100 the second time, not counting the other 20 or so that were too difficult to reach. About two dozen were Pro V1s.
If I remember the “correctly. Lee Trevino was asked many years ago what’s the difference between a one dollar golf ball and a three dollar golf ball. His reply was two dollars LOL
I can tell the difference big time. Bought a pack of noodle long and soft at the start of season and it was all I used the first half of this year. Wife bought me some new callaway chrome triple trackers and they feel so fucking good and I get more spin around the greens and a lot of a nicer feel with the scotty
Superb video Rick as always I also have tried these out and cannot fault them!! Would buy more with the confidence of knowing you have given them your seal of approval
Excellent vid mate, as always. I’ve played refurbed Pro V1s for ages solely due to price. I’m a mid handicapper. But I’m wondering if I might buy a few boxes of new ones to do this test myself and see what the difference is on course. Thanks again mate
Is the clicking sound different due to the change in cover from 2017 to 2019? I believe the reason for the shiny white cover and the scuffing was due to them being repainted correct?
Thanks for this video. I just purchased 16 dozen prov1 refurbish d balls. So I was a little skeptical. My plan is to start my warm up rounds for this next season using these. I plan to put them side by side to compare. Thanks Rick love your vids
durability out of sand bunker, you're comparing 2017 to 2019 balls. You cant attribute the difference to it being refurbished. You'd need to compare new 2017 to refurb 2017

Great review! I actually bought similarly packaged Pro V1's recently. I have had the same impression and results! Yes a slight difference in the 'click' sound and feel (slightly harder), but GREAT results. A good value. I am happy with them/ I line out the "refurbished" for putting LOL
I found one of these in the woods at my local golf course. I feel in love after playing it for a few holes. It has an amazing soft feel to it. I am one of those guys who could careless about a golf ball but the Wilson Staff had me hooked! Plus it very cheap compared to other top named brands.
Not as long as a Pro V1 (real or refurbished) but they play surprisingly well and for some reason I rarely lose them. The also are on sale pretty regularly around here e.g. just bought 2 dozen for CDN$30. I also like that they come in colors so in the fall I switch to the bright red.
I have bought several of the refurbished/rewashed boxes and has just noticed that there are different year balls in there. The Pro V1 font and arrows differ with the year they were released. The oldest one I have gotten was from 2003-04. Most are from 2015+. Hope this helps in anyway. I absolutely love these golf balls and for the price I'm not as scared to hit them since they are much cheaper. Walmart had/has them on clearance for $7 a dozen so why wouldnt you buy them. That is about the same price as the cheapo balls you find there. Cheers 🍻
I just bought my first dozen of refurbished golf balls and will never go back to buying new golf balls. The balls played just as well as a new ball and for a fraction of the price! I used to play the NXT Tour but don’t want to pay for the new version of those. So I decided to try the refurbished Bridgestone B-330 Tour RX. Loved them!! Thank you for this video!!!
There is some data on lake balls. Balls were left in water for something like 6 months and the water balls averaged 5-6 yards shorter on drives which is about 2%. Not a huge difference.
I use Pro V1’s in league matches and usually Vice for casual play (or whatever cheaper ball I feel like testing). I recently tried the refurbished Pro V1’s and had a similar experience - longer driver distance but much less spin around the green. My normal drives are about 270-280 and with the refurbished balls I had quite a few that were well over 300. I even drove the green on a 320 par 4 for my very first eagle! I’ll stick to Pro V1’s during league matches and tournaments, mostly for comfort and confidence, but the refurbished balls are definitely good for casual players
I play with whatever’s in my bag(usually balls i find out on the course) i use range balls sometimes, paired with my grandfathers hand me down 96’ big berthas. Unstoppable
I used my grandpa's 5, 7, and 9 irons from the 70's. At first it was just a sentimental thing but they play shorter and loftier than the titliest irons from the 90's I use 3, 6, 8, pw.
that's the question! It would be possible that Rick felt the difference between 2019 en 2017 proV1, the performed test doesn't exclude this possibility.
No pro v has ever felt clicky! Ive used these reurbs and they do not feel like any pro v ever made! But as long as they go ok and you can deal with the weird feel then all is ok
Srixon Taylormade ProV1s Slazengers. Anyone remember those Gel TMs?? I Loved them! The feel was unbelievable. Why does the refurbished balls seem harder than new?
Rick how did the Refurbished ball feel when putting??? If clicky that Scares me. I tried a vice pro plus which was real clicky to me when putting. So I switch to a vice pro soft which I am interesting to see how those to compare refurbish pro v1 vs vice pro soft??? Any thoughts
Spike Fortin unfortunately not but I use the vice pro and it is superb, if I remember I’ll check this weekend and compare it with the pro v1 for softness.
I watched this video last week for the first time. I have been subscribed for a long time but not sure how I never ran across this before. I have played the Pro V1 for several years. Mainly due to control around the green. I am terrible everywhere else and that causes me to lose a lot of golf balls. I went out and bought a box of these last Friday 4/30/21 and played on 5/1/21. I did shoot my lowest score ever, a 75, and for the first time in my life, regardless of course, i played the whole round without losing a single ball. Now the 75 might be a bit misleading as it is a par 67 executive course. But on this same course, earlier in the year, I have shot over 100. In January, my wife who was playing with me, watched me hit 3 brand new Pro V's that were part of my Christmas gift, into a pond off the tee. If the swing is there, the ball can help your score. If the swing is not there, it doesn't matter what ball you play. I will probably be on the refurbs for a while now. Until I lose them anyway. I enjoy your videos and thanks for rerunning some older ones that some of us might not have seen before. Gregg

I haven't played much since I started high school, but back in the day I'd buy from the "lake balls" basket in the shop at the course. Grounds keepers dig balls out of water hazards, forest, rough, what have you, and sell them in the shop 3 for $1 or so. You could find some sweet deals in the basket if you felt like digging! I might spend a bit more if I played these days, but maybe not top dollar, since there's about 1000 things I could improve about my game before balls were the bottle neck >_
I bought two dozen refurbished ProV's, out of the box they were the same as genuine but the cover's broke up very quickly. After 18 holes they looked like they had played two or three games.
I play Pro V1X and I'm cheap, I play them until they are about the same color as that sand trap at the 8:00 mark. In the rather loose group of 12 or 14 guys I play with on a weekly basis, I'm known for being able to stop the ball on a dime from around the green. Part of this is due to also using my ancient Ping Eye 2 sand wedge with clean grooves.
Rick I started playing the Snell MTB Black. It’s a really good ball. The owner Dean Snell was one of the former engineers at Titleist who helped design the Pro V1 and the Prestige ball. I also think he had a hand in the Professional ball as well. He worked for TaylorMade as well on the Penta models. If you haven’t already maybe you can test the MTB Black and the X.
I often play Titleist NXT Tour lake balls in best quality. I honestly can't find any difference to new ones. Lots of people like MyGolfSpy say that you should avoid lake balls in any case. What's your opininon and I would love to see a similar review with lake balls!
Half priced ProV1s are also very expensive for me. I'm just moving from $0.5 old balls to $1.5 Pinnacle Soft and similar ones. Frankly, at my level, unless a ball is, kind of dead, I can't really make out much difference at all.
I have been playing the PRO V1x "refurbished" this year so far and love them. Very nice spin control around the greens, they do show the old signs of wear after a few holes. But for $20/dozen I couldn't be happier. I haven't seen this video yet, watching now so I hope they get the RS stamp of approval!
I've personally never been playing a round of golf and hit a bad shot or shot a bad round and thought "gee if only I had played a better ball." It's 99% the golfer and maybe that last percent the ball. For most amateurs, you're seriously better off saving money and playing cheap balls than to go all out and spend money on ProV's to only lose a couple sleeves a round. The ball isn't gonna make or break your round trust me, you hitting solid contact will

I’m terrible at golf but play anyways. I will say the chrome soft are a nice feel coming off the club
@@daleykun Iron Byron would work. Or a reasonable facsimile.
I hit every golf ball pretty much the same with the driver. Maybe TP5 go a little better through the wind, but nothing significant.
I don't think prices have gone up have they? Always been $50 US.
Expect site to jump refurb prices $8-10 a dozen this week. Thanks Rick.

No shit, Sherlock.
I just started playing again a month ago after 10 years of not playing. I use Noodle soft and long but that’s because my horrific slice causes me to lose a lot of them still at this point. I like the feel around the green and putting but feel they lack spin into the green and seem to run a long ways up after they hit.
I wish you would have done part of this test in your range. Could have tested spin rate and accuracy a little better.
But very cool.
That and should've tried to find non refurbished of the same year. Can't compare and updated ball to a lesser model.
Maybe the 2017 Model does always sounds different to the 2019's ????
The real question! Would be fun to see the tests done with balls of the same year.
No its that plastic cover! No pro v1 has ever felt clicky! I couldnt use these as the feel was pretty bad for around the green imo. Sure the shot was probably no different but for short chips the ball felt too alive.
Great vid. I’ve been wondering this for awhile. However it would’ve been nice for you to hit them inside in the bay to check spin RPMs
Agreed..in the states atleast..alot come out of ponds, and lakes...and ive heard about them being water logged
I look on eBay. I can score 4A/5A grade near mint/mint condition . One hit wonders for about 1.50 a ball.
be carefull theres alot of so called pro vs on ebay their fake i bought 15 refurbs (£20)they were like pebbles!!! cromesoft £20 a box better deal
You go out to a golfcourse at night and go and collect them?
OH MAN! That tip of the UV lamp is the best LIFE HACK I ever heard! Thanks!!!
You’ll learn some day that the value of time is more than $$
If I remember the “correctly. Lee Trevino was asked many years ago what’s the difference between a one dollar golf ball and a three dollar golf ball. His reply was two dollars LOL
Repost
I can tell the difference big time. Bought a pack of noodle long and soft at the start of season and it was all I used the first half of this year. Wife bought me some new callaway chrome triple trackers and they feel so fucking good and I get more spin around the greens and a lot of a nicer feel with the scotty
"Probably lose the ball before worrying about the cover" haha aint that the truth
Whatever I find in my bag that looks cool, I'm not lying I honestly dont care what I use.
Can’t wait for this video I buy the refurbished pro v1s gonna be nice to see the comparison
the refurbished ProV1's are $17.99 at WalMart here in the US ... I have been playing them for years and have zero complaints.
Mike Shortridge what Walmart sells them??
@@Maxbrud 2 walmarts within 5 or 6 miles of my house in Houston .. both sell them

@@chipandputt Which ones? We are in Energy Corridor and no luck finding them so far...
durability out of sand bunker, you're comparing 2017 to 2019 balls. You cant attribute the difference to it being refurbished. You'd need to compare new 2017 to refurb 2017
He also said they're sandblasted and repainted, who knows what they're being repainted with
@@JamesStillings I'd guess! they are not repainted, they are sanded lightly to remove most marks and then polished, so buffed not painted.
@@luapynneb3069 Yeah , I was thinking they might sound a bit different because they've taken a clear coat, varnish type layer off and have just polished them without reapplying that layer....That's my guess anyway :-)
Saw these at aldi and thought to myself, “Let’s see what Rick says!” I may be investing since I’m still looking to shoot consistently in the 80s. From one beardsman to another, Great video and keep that beard growing Rick! Looks good on ya!
Have you ever heard of “Vice Golf”? I play the Vice pro plus ball and absolutely love it! Very similar to Pro V
Great review! I actually bought similarly packaged Pro V1's recently. I have had the same impression and results! Yes a slight difference in the 'click' sound and feel (slightly harder), but GREAT results. A good value. I am happy with them/ I line out the "refurbished" for putting LOL
3:56 Hey Rick! Looks like you decided to keep those blades in the bag huh?
good eye my friend.
I'm not sure if you just saved me a lot of money or cost me a a lot. But thanks for the review.
Transitioning from reconditioned Bridgestone B330 RX balls to the Titleist AVX.
Switched from Pro V1 to Callaway chrome soft and think the Crom Softs just as good.
great currency among golf maintenance
same here callaway came up with a great ball Richard at a great price lov em
Wilson Staff Duo Soft... Great golf balls. They perform great and the price is outstanding.
My ball of choice. Though i bought a lot of Topflight BOMB and Strata SMASH. Love the Wilson
Great ball
I have bought several of the refurbished/rewashed boxes and has just noticed that there are different year balls in there. The Pro V1 font and arrows differ with the year they were released. The oldest one I have gotten was from 2003-04. Most are from 2015+. Hope this helps in anyway. I absolutely love these golf balls and for the price I'm not as scared to hit them since they are much cheaper. Walmart had/has them on clearance for $7 a dozen so why wouldnt you buy them. That is about the same price as the cheapo balls you find there. Cheers 🍻
Hey thanks for watching 🙌
Make sure you are subscribed and you have the BELL 🔔 icon pressed to get notifications when I release new videos!
Rick Shiels Golf where u buy those prov1 refurbished 👌seem ok
I wonder if you played a ProV1 from 2017 if they'd perform/feel the same.
I was wondering the same thing. Insides are different, cover might be different between 2017/2019 too.
Keith Ketcham whenever I think about golf technology too much I remind myself that golfers could break 70 with a top flite in the 90s
I'm still using the same sleeve of Spalding Molitors from 1991
They are still in great shape and round
is a sleeve 3 balls? Do you honestly expect us to believe you've kept the same 3 balls for 30 years?
Great video mate. Have you done the same comparison with Lake balls?
There is some data on lake balls. Balls were left in water for something like 6 months and the water balls averaged 5-6 yards shorter on drives which is about 2%. Not a huge difference.
If you see bubbles on the surface of the ball, don't play.
Gonna start buying them. Love the PV1 but cringe when I hit them OOB. Great video. Keep up the good work!
Great video. I use Pro V1 refurbished mainly because I tend to lose a decent amount of balls. Also use Callaway super soft
I've been trying to cut through an Argos Commando ball since 1992...
I have a few of those lying around. Can't make my mind up whether I actually liked them or that they were just so cheap lol.
What did the 2017 pro V1 feel like compared to the refurbished Pro V1
that's the question!
I use the refurbished ones and am very happy!
I play Vice Pro Plus... love them... great video though!!
sinterklaasje1975 same w me. Great balls and awesome company
I use the refurbished titleist balls myself, with being a beginner I lose a few regularly so they do me well.
Have you tried hitting the refurbished balls alongside 2017 Pro V1s? Maybe the new old stock 2017 balls will be clicky too.
*smashes a straight, long drive*
"That was a pretty horrendous tee shot"
Rick how did the Refurbished ball feel when putting??? If clicky that Scares me. I tried a vice pro plus which was real clicky to me when putting. So I switch to a vice pro soft which I am interesting to see how those to compare refurbish pro v1 vs vice pro soft??? Any thoughts
Have you tried the Vice Pro (not the plus) as that is the Pro V1 equivalent?
@@rvhextall have you tried them both and if so have you noticed a difference??
Spike Fortin unfortunately not but I use the vice pro and it is superb, if I remember I’ll check this weekend and compare it with the pro v1 for softness.
Found these in my walmart bought two boxes and called it a year, no complaints
I play the same golf ball for three years then get rid of it and play a new one
Just started playing with TP5s. Absolutely love them.
I play Pro V1 and generally play it well, the strike sounded different from 1 to 2,3 and 4
Good testing mate and class video as standard 👏🏼
I bought two dozen refurbished ProV's, out of the box they were the same as genuine but the cover's broke up very quickly. After 18 holes they looked like they had played two or three games.
I am a big refurb guy to save money. Love the content
As a relatively newcomer I would be interested in a short film on different types of balls and how they affect your game.
Titleist- Velocity
Calloway - Chrome Soft
I've played golf in 2 months now, so I use what ever I find ;)
Florian Pichler MGS was talking about balls found in the lake, not refurbished balls
@@jackchildree1491 I know. And I would be interested to see a test with lake balls.
Great video Rick. Really enjoyed watching the comparison play out with the pro v1's
Half priced ProV1s are also very expensive for me. I'm just moving from $0.5 old balls to $1.5 Pinnacle Soft and similar ones. Frankly, at my level, unless a ball is, kind of dead, I can't really make out much difference at all.
I use Srixon Qstar tour. Love the feel, performance and price.
I just found one of these golf balls after a drive into some brush. I didn't play it but after putting around with it, it seems promising.
I like to play the callaway chrome soft I just feel like I can make them get the loft I nee$ at times
I use these all the time...being a weekend golfer I can’t tell the difference at all. Glad to see they are a good ball!!
I don't even golf. Why do I keep watching these lol!
you should start golfing. its a sign
give it a try

Doesn’t matter which ball I use, always the same outcome🤣 #Spray
Bradivey06 totally relatable! I hit more trees than fairways! 🤷♂️ #fore!
Spot on I have that same outcome its like friendly fire
I have been playing the PRO V1x "refurbished" this year so far and love them. Very nice spin control around the greens, they do show the old signs of wear after a few holes. But for $20/dozen I couldn't be happier. I haven't seen this video yet, watching now so I hope they get the RS stamp of approval!
I am surprised that there wasn't a GC Quad comparison, potential video perhaps?
Thats was done on James Robinson golf's channel a little while ago..
@@SimonParkes Thanks, l will look that up. I wouldn't have known otherwise.
Rick is the pickiest about clicky I’ve ever seen
I've personally never been playing a round of golf and hit a bad shot or shot a bad round and thought "gee if only I had played a better ball." It's 99% the golfer and maybe that last percent the ball. For most amateurs, you're seriously better off saving money and playing cheap balls than to go all out and spend money on ProV's to only lose a couple sleeves a round. The ball isn't gonna make or break your round trust me, you hitting solid contact will
i noticed the blades are in the bag😄
Are those Wilson's?
