    Scotty is right! Hybrids have more parts compared to a conventional vehicle, more parts that can break down over time. I would only buy a new hybrid but I personally think hybrids used for commercial purposes (taxi, uber, deliveries, etc) are the only owners that fully take advantage of the gas savings before the car starts to fall apart. They definitely recover their investment sooner than the average driver.

It’s not like he misrepresented it to be a Toyota or something. Would you give them their $ back if you sold it to them & something broke that you didn’t know about or know what they might’ve done to cause it(not perform basic maintenance or rag it out)? Hi Scotty. Love your channel, but I am going to take a bit of a different view regarding hybrids. I have two : a 2019 Camry and my wife drives a 2017 Rav4 ( both purchased new). I would agree in the regard that when they break, probably more expensive, but there are trade-offs. For example, my Camry has NO belts; everything is electronic, so I never have to worry about being stranded after a serpentine belt lets go, or an alternator takes a crap. And, I AVERAGE between 53-55 mpg.... IN A CAMRY! My wife's Rav4 has a rear end similar to what you reviewed in this video. I changed the fluid in the front and rear axle assemblies at 50,000 miles (hybrids do not have standard "differentials"). No problems and she just passed 70, 000 miles. Perhaps the Highlander you reviewed did not have this service, I don't know. The takeaway: whether a hybrid or standard ICE, maintain it, and it will last a LONG time, especially (I also have a 2012 Tundra and a 2013 Camry ICE) if it is a Toyota.

    • @oraclewizard77
      @oraclewizard77 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It really depends on what Hybrid you buy. You can buy a new Toyota Camry hybrid, Prius, or Corolla hybrid and they will last over 200,000 miles. You could also buy them 3 - 5 years used to get a better price. But yes, he is right in that you don't want to buy a 250,000 hybrid because at that point, you are looking at more expensive repairs.

      You just got to pay attention to which hybrid. And you have to be able to learn a few new things when working on them.
      Got a 2008 Prius 329,000 mi. Still on the original battery original engine and trans, original wheel bearings, just changed out the factory struts. 328,000 mi on a set of struts not too bad.
      The second generation Prius 2004 to 2009 are pretty much tanks mechanically. The third generation 2010 to 2015 have some problems you have to be aware of or they can cost you big time. EGR system clogs up causes excessive hot exhaust to enter the cylinder chambers and you can crack a head gasket. Also the water pump is electrically driven which is fine except they switched to a plastic impeller which fractures eventually and then the car overheats and then it blows the head gasket.
      If you take care of those two items preemptively they generally are pretty reliable. But the second generation is definitely a bit more bulletproof.

      Why not to reduce air pollution and having better mpg so we do not need to constantly stop at gas stations ??. If you worry about dealer expensive battery, mine wanted $4000 but I fixed it at independent mechanics for only $650.

    I think I would double check before spending the money on a differential. It could be a wheel bearing just because the wheel doesn't wiggle and you don't hear anything with it hanging in the air not under load doesn't mean that the wheel bearing isn't bad. The better option would have been for him to use his sound detector system put it at four corners and take a drive.
    If it is that center differential that's bad you can almost guarantee that the reason it has failed is nobody has bothered to change the differential fluid.
    The Toyota hybrids are pretty robust. My 2008 Prius has 329,000 mi on it. Original battery, engine and trans and wheel bearings. Just changed out the factory struts. still rolling on all the original suspension arms bushings tie rod ends steering rack etc. The second generation Priuses are pretty much tanks, the third generation has a few issues that have to be addressed preemptively or you can cause blown head gaskets and they do tend to be oil burners.

    Hybrid technology does make sense... Especially for an auto brand worried about CO2 fines. Getting hybrids on the market is way cheaper than investing in electric cars. The problems go to the customer, mainly the extra maintenance cost that is always required, even when in new condition. If you want a car now, get an older one, in good condition. Avoid hybrids.
