I love all the professional well done versions of this song, but this is how it was supposed to be sung. Half drunk in a pub with your mates! This is perfection.
This Yank is guessing that it's a requirement if you want to move to Nova Scotia you have to know the lyrics to Barrett's Privateers: they stop you at the border and sing "oh the year was 1778" and if you don't respond "how I wish I was in Sherbrooke now" they kick you out.
By the gods, it's been over 18yrs for me and the Lower Deck is still the high mark of me adolencence, glad it's still there and still kicking out the good times....
I just think it's awesome, this is probably exactly what Stan Rogers intended when he wrote Barret's Privateers; To be sung loudly in a pub with beers in hand.
Yeah definitely if not the best of Canada :D Got to hand it to Bruce though he's an utter legend as far as I'm concerned, can't put into words how grateful I am for him joining Runrig, hope he has many years of success definitely has me as a fan :) Love Al's work too he's a great lad, both of them quite frankly never fail to make me laugh! Couple of great lads and I sincerely mean that one!
I had the great privilege of meeting and living with four amazingly fun Halifax girls back in 1999 in the UK, whilst on my O.E (Overseas Experience). They introduced me and my best mate to Great Big Sea. We had the most awesome time visiting The Lower Deck when we came to Halifax to catch-up with all the gals, such good times, so many good memories...
I remember a few evenings some time back with a group of friends at a local pub singing this song, pounding on the table shouting "Drink more beers"... Those nights scored us a few free rounds of Jameson Irish Whiskey, of course the free entertainment probably worked well for the place as well I imagine... Good times!

I think this video should be named "Alan Trying To Drink His Pint". Seems like he had a feckin' hard time trying to get to his drop o' the black stuff.
Trying to find an alan doyle video about his mother and grandmother asking if he is going to work in Canada, and if he has a job yet. Any help would be good thanks

I know exactly what you talk about.
Half drunk.. LOL
@@michaelbecker7093 Half sober...
Rest well, dear Bruce. Gone too soon. 😢
@@michaelbecker7093If by half you mean they replaced half the water in their bodies with beer I would believe you. 😅

As another Yank, I hope so!
Nova Scotia is where that is in Latin means New Scotland
You could probably get a pass by responding to "Rise Again, Rise Again" with "Let her Name Not be Lost to the Knowledge of Men"
And you have to be screeched in and kiss 💋 😘 the cod! Been there , done it! King's College /Dalhousie Alum ... esepecially during covid times! Lol 😆
@@mikeredmond1000 Getting ‘screeched in’ is a 100% NL tradition. Has nothing to do with Nova Scotia.
My dream is to be on a vacation and randomly wander into this place and see this.
Gildor777 go to Halifax. it really is an amazing city. stay downtown and walk to the Lower deck. :)
By the gods, it's been over 18yrs for me and the Lower Deck is still the high mark of me adolencence, glad it's still there and still kicking out the good times....
Did that exact thing at this exact bar two summers ago. Its turns out how you would expect:)
Halifax, Nova Scotia, " Any Given Night "
HALIFAX. Lower Deck. So fun

My life will be complete once i can do so
Not to mention this is also being sung on a Halifax pier
Totally TOTALLY agree
@@joshlavers7959 was great before I knew that, and it's now greater still
And you have to tap out the tunes on the table with your beer 🍺 mug without spilling the beer! Clink Cheers 🍻 sociable!
Rest well, Bruce. Gone too soon.😢
I'm an American and love this song, Canada you got a fucking winner.
Summer in Halifax, the whole lot of us singing at the top of our lungs, drinks sloshing. Thanks for the memory!!!
Please don't rely to Peter schilling's comments he is an imposter
How are you doing today?
I've seen many artists perform Barrett's Privateers at the Lower Deck. This is a wonderful rendition. I miss Halifax :(
I can proudly say I've sung this song in this very place with some great people!
now THIS is a party we are sorry to have missed!
I think this is peak #Canada

Drove to PEI for the first time and this song was in my head all the way up.

@Aramis419, a stout must be drunk warm with no bubbles ^^ . A little advice: don't loose the hankerchief a certain girl gave you ;)
Alan Doyle is an awesome artist... i will play for him someday!!!
The lower deck stage was full of great talent that night!!
+Woodenstool Productions As soon as I saw it was Alan Doyle and Bruce Guthro singing a Stan Rodgers song I had to listen.

I love this and makes me homesick!
Love this, but I just miss the "yelp" in Stan Rogers' voice for Barrett's Privateers.
Aye was really tragic what happened to him, gutted seriously so you're not the only one!
Can't wait to return!! 23 Days and Counting!! Love Halifax!! and Lower Deck!!
I wish I were at the Lower Deck that day. Good to see Alan mess up the chorus, shed it off and carry on. Too much Guinness lol
I like singing this song as Nomi Malone after my 400th time of watching Showgirls
it still makes sense
Lower deck, pure legendary spot that.
Great Party - wish I had been there.
this makes me insanely happy
I can’t wait to hear this next weekend at the stan rogers festival it will be a great time I’m also excited to hopefully hear 1234 as well ❤❤❤❤

Only in Newfoundland -- an all-star lineup singing old sea shanties.
the look at 3:21 when he doesn't get a beer makes me laugh every time
My #1 bucket list item is to play with Alan Doyle, and by that I mean play music, get yer filthy minds outta the gutter.
thats awesome!!!!! So lucky to see Alan there super jealous
Holy shit alan doyle with a stan rogers tune...brilliant
This was so much fun!
Now THAT is having a good time!
This is soooo much better than the chorale style clean shanty singing. This is how a shanty short of a ship is meant to he sung
Beautiful ladies ❤️😊
That Kendal Carson gets every where 👍
HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!
How I wished to be there that Night
Just like sitting at the Newfoundland kitchen table.
This is awesome!! :)
