There is an answer tho: the black crusades were mostly successful. Abbadons crusades were power grabs more then anything. They were never meant to topple the imperium… they only served purposes for a greater end. Although we never got to see Abbadon’s full plan into action, he’s plan B still managed to cut the imperium in half and doom thousands of worlds to the whims of the dark gods. Just because the CSM can’t wipe out million guardsmen (and let’s be honest, if they have retained some semblance of their former intelligence, an act like that wouldn’t be too difficult if they actually strategized.) it doesn’t mean that a guardsman is superior then he. There's always I liked about the guard compared to the space marines or some of the other factions even. Space Marines were made to know no fear. The guardsman knows fear, probably lives in constant fear and yet they push forward.
And then you remember the guardsman like the death korp of krieg, the jungle guardsman and the cadians and realise that they held the line to keep the imperium safe.
Contrary to popular belief, Space Marines can feel fear. While their fear response is undoubtedly gone (Fight/Flight/Freeze response, I mean), Space Marines have been seen to feel fear before, although it's suppressed. Like feeling scared but having no mental barrier to stop you from overcoming it. What I like about the Guard is that they don't have this shortcut. It's LESS meaningful if the implication is that this nameless Guardsman is being *possessed* by some "Giga-Chad Uber-Ultimate-Guardsman" who has faced down literally every threat imaginable and survived to cockblock Horus... It's *categorically* more meaningful if this nameless Guardsman is *JUST* a random, nameless Guardsman, with absolutely nothing special or unique about him save for his *OWN* willpower. Having some practically perfect poster-boy *possess* this man to give this speech, ONLY serves to undermine *THIS* man's integrity and agency. It is *objectively* filled with *more* meaning if the individual men and women who keep the darkness at bay, DO so of their OWN volition. That they have the choice to fall, whether spiritually or physically, and instead they *choose* to FIGHT, for their principles and loved ones. Do not undermine the value of personal agency.
When the life fades from one guardsmen’s eyes, the second’s fills with rage as the blood begins to boil, his hands clench in fists and his finger holds down on the trigger as he aims his lasgun at whatever horror who murdered his comrade.
i'm reminded of.... i can't remember where it was. but something described the guard by instead ranting an endless stream of just how fucking terrifying every threat in 40k is. Only then going "The guard is regular ass men and women with mass produced armour and weapons, sent to fight ALL OF THAT. and they don't always loose. BADASSES."
Pity thyself, traitor. The Emperor has given you everything you needed to do your duty. Except for the heart. That, not even the Emperor could give, to those lacking.
I imagine that there are two endings to this. All told by the silence, the lifting of noise that happens near the end. 1. The Chaos Marine, either in anger or in his inability to answer, kills the Guardsman. 2. The Chaos Marine, stunned, perhaps struck with thought...retreats.
I imagine the Marine lifts his bolt gun and fires one round into the wall of the bunker not at the Guardsman just near him before turning and leaving, silently questioning his loyalty his existence.
I have now listened to five of your videos and only one of them hasn't made me go dead silent and listen as hard as I could. This was not that one. I think it has to do with the music, sound balancing, and emotion you put into the ones I loved. Is it you in every video? This is powerful. Thank you.

GW gets the science, numbers, and tactics of warfare wrong constantly
How so?
@@WarbossR0kt00fSant0s The supposedly titanic conflicts that shatter worlds often have less fighters involved in them in WH40k lore than a single battle from any of the World Wars.
@@WarbossR0kt00fSant0sBullet calibers alone are massively inconsistent. The literal mechanical workings of various technologies are often contradictory across multiple sources. Logistics get really screwy.
@@Aristeidesyou really need to multiply any number gw puts out by atleast 100. Its not 2 million guardsmen fighting, its 200.
I wept tears of blood in Cry Havoc, tears of sorrow in Don't Go. But in this...I wept tears of pride. In the grim darkness of the far future, humanity's spirit endures!
Glory to Mankind! Glory to Him on Holy Terra, Who sits upon the Golden Throne! The Emperor protects!
I legit cried a bit in that ending. THE POWER IN THAT SPEECH, HOLY THRONE!
He has hold the line for Ten Thousand Years... God, I love the Guard.
"To each of us falls a task, and all the Emperor requires of us Guardsmen is that we stand the line, and we die fighting. It is what we do best: We die standing." - General Sturnn
I really needed this today. I was having a pretty stressful time at work, but if that nameless Guardsman could find the gumption to look his reaper in the eye and not blink than I can too.
Ave Imperitor brother. I hope you day goes better!
They fight, with all their human flaws and imperfections, to preserve all that they know from a universe that individually none of them could hope to understand why it wants them dead.
@@inwit594 And then you have the absolute chad of a coward, Ciaphas Cain Hero of the Imperium. This mad ladd has taken on things and won that SPACE MARINES struggle against. He is an unenhanced human commissar.
@@Nempo13 Courage is just faking bravery, after all. He's only a coward in his own mind because he compares himself against a bunch of indoctrinated lunatics with no sense of self-preservation. Cain just never stops faking it for various reasons he uses to justify doing so.
Also: don't forget Jurgen! Everyone forgets Jurgen...
That's true bravery
one thing that was missing is the sound of the bolter round at the end, as the chaos champion, who could not answer, just killed the one speaking.

Phenomenal...I love the Chaos Marine's and the Guardsman's contrasting voices and emotions - reminds me of 'Don't Go' in a way. Glad you decided to narrate this classic 40K gem. Thank you 👍
I told you this would be great! Man I'm so pumped right now! As always, great job brother! The Emperor Protects!
Thankyou so much for the idea! Means a lot to me to have such a great community.
@@AVoxintheVoid Hey man, you don't have to thank me. The quality of content and the respect that you have for the material speaks for itself. Also, I for one am proud to be apart of this community!
I give respect and shout outs when it's due my friend and it's definitely warranted in this case. I appreciate the feedback and ideas for the channel, and this one is certainly a hit 🙂
I imagine as this guardsman is doing his speech, wounded guardsmen are standing up and grabbing their weapons. Surrounding the chaos marine
Man I love this story it was the that truly got me into the hobby. I love your rendition of it the voice work is great I love the harsh uncaring tone compared to the soft respectful tone it really helps show their emotions
Many thanks Connor! Glad it lived up to your expectations. All the best brother
This personifies the moment that the mortal guardsman Ollanius Pius stood bravely against the Chaos-corrupted Horus in defence of a weakened Emperor.
His final words a mortal's final words lethally burned a Chaos fueled warmaster of the renegade legion's leaders and the champion of the gods of chaos lost to him giving time for the emperor a chance for the killing blow.
"FOR BOB!!"
Bob was indeed the bestest guardsman
And as the speech ends, the chaos marine distracted by the rousing speech of his loyalist brother, and only remembers the guardsman too late as the whine of a plasma pistol powering up behind him can be heard
Honestly imagined the same thing lol
This feels like the last thing a demonic trespasser heard from a defiant Cadian Guardsman before the world broke and the ground they stood on shook. Powerful
This is something the chaos marine cries about on some nights, the day a lowly guardsman roasted the ever living hell out of him.
*Fix's bayonet*
The Planet Broke Before The Guard!
*Charges like a lunatic*
Your version somehow towers over the original because you changed the POV to the guardsman himself. Thank you for this.
For The Emperor!
The daemon-touched has seen 100,000 worlds over 10,000 years, has experienced every sensation and fallen to every level of degeneracy. And yet still, he is empty. The Guardsman may live for but a blink, he may never experience the highest points of pleasure, or the deepest depths of wrath, but he experiences love. He experiences duty. He experiences a life worth dying for.
Pity not the Guardsman. Pity the Chaos Marine, who lives in perpetual, self-sustained suffering.
For nine days the lone guardsmen battled to keep the innocent safe....and then his brother walked in
To pick him back up to once fight again the name of the emperor
It brings a tear to this Jaded guardsmen's eye to hear this.
I love it!!!!!!
I cried, millions of hearts beating!!
I can’t imagine his face after hearing to demi gods fighting about the mining of his life
I can Imagine after Guardsman Speech, Tempestus Scion, Catachan Jungle Fighter, Cadian Fighter, Tallaran Desert Fighter, Harkoni Warhawk, Valhalan Ice Warrior, Death Korps of Krieg and a Battalion of Baneblade showed up and Proceed to Mow Down all Chaos Force until nothing Left.
How did I not find this phenomenal channel sooner? This is amazing stuff! Your subscription and view levels are criminally low. This is one of the best kept secrets of 40k lore smithing.
Well, I'm glad you're here now!
brought a tear to the professor's eyes -mighty well done
I always imagine the guardsman that's responding is shaking wounded and is desperately trying to lift his lasgun just for one more shot maybe one more shot will save him but as the traitor starts to gloat he knows it's over so decides to fight back not with lasgun fire or a suicide charge but words that cut deeper than any chainsword or bayonet even could
that moment when the chaos space marine jumps into the trench and the commissar sniffs the air and says they smell bitch
This is the best version of pity the guardsman I've heard on TH-cam

Thank you Vox in the void. I thank the God Emperor that His light led me to your channel in the world wide webway.
Ah man, thankyou so much for the support 💪💪💪
Wow this is actually pretty amazing, I dare say this is actually better than the video. Yes the video is great but it has a space Marine with superior powers speaking down on a chaos space marine, while this one sounds more like when a physically weak kid stands up to his bully, knowing he might get kicked to death, still speaks up his mind anyway. This is actually more inspiring as it sounds more human. And the voice actor did a great job!
Thankyou very much my friend. Pity the guardsman was a piece of community fiction before it was made into a short animation. I always imagined it to be a guardsman grunt as the counter voice. Thankyou for the huge compliment, it was great fun narrating this and glad it came across that way. Vox
@@AVoxintheVoid That was you? dude you sound like a damn warrior poet ! please keep it up !!
@@GamingSpoiler yeah I'm the only voice you'll hear on this channel. This is my baby!
I like to think the guardsman who’s speaking is being spoken through by the spirit of Ollanius Pius, a man who has stood against monsters, tyrants, and the horrors of the xenos. A man who stood against the archtraitor. Imo with that pov, the line “what’s your excuse, monster?” Hits so much harder
The Emperor protects.
"Hail Chaos!"
"Requesting fire mission on coordinates 29573947 fire for effect"
"Wait what?"
My god this is awesome, good work as always vox!
As much as I like chaos like my Thousand Sons I love the guardsman like this guy and the tempestus scions plus this also almost made me tear up
I've never heard a guardsman version of the response. It was so powerful! Well done. I was deeply moved.
When the life fades from one guardsmen’s eyes, the second’s fills with rage as the blood begins to boil, his hands clench in fists and his finger holds down on the trigger as he aims his lasgun at whatever horror who murdered his comrade.
Inside every Gaurdsmen lies a mutual monstrosity.
A monstrosity that would rip, roar, and tear if the god emperor hadn’t pitied his enemies.
That was a great story and the voice acting was amazing
Thankyou my friend. I can't obviously take credit for the writing but i appreciate your kind words about the voice acting!
i'm reminded of.... i can't remember where it was. but something described the guard by instead ranting an endless stream of just how fucking terrifying every threat in 40k is. Only then going "The guard is regular ass men and women with mass produced armour and weapons, sent to fight ALL OF THAT. and they don't always loose. BADASSES."
having an Astartes lecture this Heretic to death on how NOT PATHETIC the Imperial Guard are is truly the definition of epic 40k.
For the Emperor.
PITY THE TRAITOR THAT THEY MUST FACE DOWN THE FAITHFUL WITH NAUGHT BUT THE PROMISES OF DARK GODS!
Battered, bloodied, bruised, but not broken... Glory to the Emperor!
Pity thyself, traitor. The Emperor has given you everything you needed to do your duty. Except for the heart. That, not even the Emperor could give, to those lacking.
Im so happy that i have found ur chanal
I'm happy you're here too!
I imagine that there are two endings to this. All told by the silence, the lifting of noise that happens near the end.
1. The Chaos Marine, either in anger or in his inability to answer, kills the Guardsman.
2. The Chaos Marine, stunned, perhaps struck with thought...retreats.
I imagine the Marine lifts his bolt gun and fires one round into the wall of the bunker not at the Guardsman just near him before turning and leaving, silently questioning his loyalty his existence.
pure power in few strong words carries the whole thing like atomic bombs into the warp .cheers mate for the strong presentation.
Thanks Jack! This was such a well written piece it was easy to transfer the emotions into audio format
Pity the guardsman - until a crazy Elysian gets on your face, screaming his lungs out and holding a primed melta grenade.
The silence at the end is the traitor knowing they never needed an excuse for anything
“Lmao die”
I have now listened to five of your videos and only one of them hasn't made me go dead silent and listen as hard as I could. This was not that one. I think it has to do with the music, sound balancing, and emotion you put into the ones I loved. Is it you in every video? This is powerful. Thank you.
It is all me so far my friend. I have hired a few voice actors to help me out with future narrations. I'm so happy you feel this way about my work .
@@AVoxintheVoid I just want you to know I have CHOICE and ALMOST downloaded onto my phones now. I'm going to use them to meditate, write, work out, and work to. Thank you. I can write worlds and encounters and describe things because of your work. In the Black Ship one, it almost felt like you were shouting, even though all you had done was raise your voice at one point- everything felt so alive, so raw, it gave me a sense of the warp, like the noise of the ocean- your blood pounding in your head- when you put a shell up to your ear. How the warp must sound in an overpowering way to an untrained psyker. You have a gift that you have also trained and put to use, and I'm grateful you shared it in a place I and others can see it. Thank you.
The Marine proceeded to fall to the ground and die, choking and gagging on his own salty tears.
Tears of jealousy
No genetic modification, armor or otherworldly curse can mitigate the mental damage this guardsman did that day.
I heard somwhere that to be brave is not to recklessly jump into danger and feel no fear at all. This is just being dumb or crazy. Or both
Being brave is, despite feeling fear, face it. It's easier to face the horrors of the universe being a superhuman in a clad of armor, or even BE the horror of the universe like the traitors.
But it takes true bravery to face the horrors of the universe only equipped with the most mundane weapons and armor, while being fragile and feeling fear and every step
