Steve ever tried cutting a rough cut 5/8 plywood patch with a jig sawed 4" hole and attaching it under the floor so you have some meat to drive your flange screws into when dealing with a rotted subfloor.
An absolute Master Plumber at work with a well-stocked truck. It does not get any better than this. Thanks for all your videos, Steve. Your videos have taught me so much about how a professional works versus a hack. No, I do not want to be a plumber, nor an HVAC tech. I just want to learn what to look for in quality concerning those type of jobs and who and who not to call to get them done. You are a great teacher and role model, Steve. Thanks for your honesty, humor, and camera work. Miss Molly works with the best! Next Level, Mama!
I am an architect but I do a lot of DIY on my house. Just in the middle of renovating one of the bathrooms ( one bath and a separate toilet already done, one is the current project and the biggest one still waiting to be torn down and redone - so far no big mistakes, but learning by doing). The whole stuff, piping, radiant floor heating, basically all plumbing and electrical from scratch. We use different methods of plumbing here in Germany, but it all comes down on how to get the shit down the drain without leaking. I have much resprect for you to dig into this old piping and make it possible for those people to have a usable bathroom again. Nothing worse than not having a working toilet. That being said, this leak is not new and should have been adressed at least 6 months earlier. I think the second ceiling buffered most of the leak and the leak only showed when the toilet was in heavy use....Oh and next time a tarp cover before starting would safe lots of time cleaning up. Best regards
Steve, you never cease to amaze me your skill level shows the years of actual work in the plumbing trade. I am a DIYer and strive to be as good at plumbing as you with my limited skills and small at home jobs I try to perform. I can't thank you enough for all the help and tips you have provided over the year or two I have been watching your channel. Keep up the good work and don't forget the mask even if no corona about, all those particulates from a lot of those older houses you work on as you breath in can effect your lungs in the long term. I see so many people on youtube not wearing a mask with all the stuff that gets airborne...;) Keep up the videos I am fan for life. "She's a leaker mama"
lar4305 , No there's not , mostly because they don't teach the old ways and the kids in school don't want to learn . Today they don't want to fix anything ,all they want to do is tear out and install everything new. I watch some of these new plumbers on u- tube and they have so many new tools they need 3 helpers to carry them into the job and then they don't know how to use them .👷🏻
Great video Steve I like these longer videos.. I enjoy watching how you guys in America do plumbing as its alot diffrent than here in the UK. I've been watching for many many years and watch every time you upload... I rarely comment but still enjoy watching Keep it up Brendan Uk
You have everything in that truck. When I leave a job and have to go to the home depot or supply house I think of you. I wish I had the stock that you have.
Hahaha. I think about that often too. How does this guy Steve Lav have everything, and I’m running to the store every dang day? Can’t have a big truck like Steve does here in NYC. But it would be nice. The only thing he probably runs to the supply house for is specialty faucets/guts. Even then... I bet he’s got those too in every trim color also. Geez. He’s a doctor and a vendor.
I had one just like this a year ago. Lead bend had a golf size hole in it. But mine had the tub and sink tied to the side of the lead bend. So I had to run new pipe into the closet and replace about 10 ft of cast iron. Haha took me over a week! What a mess. Great job Steve. Thank goodness you had that brass there!!
I got to do a lead bend last week. Mine was in a mud job, so I got to use rapid set cement-all to repair the floor. Then the brass was really thin on the bottom, so I got to drill out the lead and use a fernco donut and minute gasket. I was 4.5 hrs.
Wow. What a job. Good $$$ on that one. Glad you wore gloves! I didn't know led will rot out like that! I have a led bend from 1950 now I wanna go look. @4:45 I was waiting for a YEEHAA! @17:41 too. lol. @6:25 was a great feeling knowing you saved a part long time ago.
Really nice job Steve we can see you are really good at your job you got here just in time and left it clean. Thanks for helping the lady and for your video and miss molly deserves some extra threats for her time waiting 🙂🙂👍.
Gotta do this in my house. The upstairs toilet was leaking over the downstairs shower for a long time. Didn't realize it until we saw the moisture extend past the tiled shower to the regular drywall ceiling. Opened it up to find pin hole leak spraying the ceiling every time the toilet flushed. Put epoxy on it temporarily but we know we need to rip out the downstairs shower and redo both the toilet pipes up above and the shower. Not as bad as this was, so I feel much better now!
It's a good thing the side outlet was abandoned or it would have been a lot more to connect. Done that a couple of times in my career but before all the plastic and clamps were out yet. Usually got the ferrule out and put in a 4x3 manhoff and 3" copper to the toilet. No picnic anyway you look at it. Great job Steve . 55 year retired plumber 👷🏻
Holy shitshow, that definitely tops the cake of the worst one I ever seen. Lucky that brass ear was there, that really saved the day. Great job, great repair Steve.
I’ve never seen those here in the five boroughs. I stock 4”x3” mission style no hub coupling, and I usually shave off some meat on the 3” side to make it a tight fit around the brass. I’ve come across 3.5” brass feral in my day too. Those are a nightmare. Usually with a lead vent on the side or the 90. Those are the days you just want to go home and hide under the sheets. Be safe out there RAE.
I find it that anyone who changes to a 3” short sweep cast iron fitting has it easy. Maybe a cut a required on both sides, but it’s easier than converting to 4” cast iron or pvc. Personally, I prefer the flanges to be flush with the finish floor, but it works the way Steve Lav did it also. In the truck I have a 3” cast iron short sweep, 4”x3” mission style no hub coupling, and a 3”x2” cast iron flange. You never know when it’ll come handy. Love those new (to me) fast setting Jonny bolts too. I’d enjoy working side by side with Steve Lav for a day or two. I’d supply the gloves, orange 8 mil diamond textured of course.
Good job. WTF is wrong with me? I've been no call 24/7 for over a year doing maintenance. Sitting here enjoying a quiet breakfast and watching you do the same shit I'm worn to a nub doing. Thanks..
Hi Steve I lookes very charred that timber maybe why they put up another ceiling. Could the fault have been caused by the lead being melted in the fire? Great repair a man of many talents
AP news: Be on the lookout for local plumber in connection with the theft of two oranges and a used pair of cap nuts from plumbing job he did in July. Consider him armed and dangerous with saber saw.
That job is a lot nastier and harder than it looks. I did the same except I melted out the Lead holding the Brass Ferrule and put the PVC pipe through the bell with that rubber donut. The room looked like it went through tornado like you said.
Wow...just wow...what a nightmare Steve...I assume you have a guy you recommend to your customers for the drywall repairs when you have to open up walls and ceilings?
I know its ill taste to ask how much this job was but how does the cost get split between the two customers? If this was an apartment would the building cover this job or what is the deal?
That was a inlet for a bathtub, but was never used, so they plugged it. My house was built in 1950 and has a somewhat seemlier closet bend where they they hooked up the bathtub drain. Of course by 1950 they had long ago stopped using wiped lead bends and were using heavy weight cast iron. 70 years and probably has another half century of life left in it.
Suck it up buttercup. Use ur sayings all the time. Now I have another one for my repertoire. Ur plumbing jobs r always the best . Overcome and adapt. Very entertaining videos I really laugh. Thanks
So you wanna be a plumba!! 2 and a half hours is top notch. Would've taken some guys 8 hours. Thanks Steve!!
Steve I love how you stay calm with such a big mess. You are right, that is experience. Much respect to you and what you do.
its not easy being cheesey
You run into And tackle some of the wildest shit..I'll continue watching.
Thanks for all the help along the way..
Nice video steve like watching your plumbing stuff.

Steve is cleaning again y'all. a good tradesman cleans up their mess and leaves it tidier than when they started.
That’s the way I work as well.
The wind blowing in the dogs face and through its fir at the open window expressed 'victory' for today!
That was a rough job alright. But you always win and so do the lucky customers who hire you. I love your philosophy of “just get ‘er done”
That was a mess that you had to deal with! Plumbing is unpredictable! That was alot of work! I really enjoyed this video Steve!

Standing on a ladder and working thru double ceilings is pretty hard on your whole body especially neck and arms, lots of credit, job well done.
Imagine the stink that must have been letting out into the building probably for 10 years. You do great work.
Top Dead Center not today but I did replace a sill cock all copper no shark bite fittings lol.

Nice fix. Glad the brass was there. Kudos!

really dig the spacer/bushing gasket, remember that one!
I’ve never seen those here in the five boroughs. I stock 4”x3” mission style no hub coupling, and I usually shave off some meat on the 3” side to make it a tight fit around the brass. Steve, big job to get at source of leak. Nice repair on that !!
Great fix Steve. That’s how the big boys do it. Excellent job. Your father schooled you good.
How much was for that job? Parts plus labor
Those are some old houses in that neighborhood, that's what keeps Steve workin!
That spacer gasket is pretty slick

I bet he has repair parts to fix an old B-17 bomber some where in the truck!!
Great job Steve! You da man!!!
Nice job. Looks good.
Need a strong stomach to watch this ... well done Steve (and miss M).
Even Molly couldn't figure out how that lead bend had so many holes in it.
Dam good repair for this neighborhood
Good job.
WTF is wrong with me?
I've been no call 24/7 for over a year doing maintenance.

Hi Steve I lookes very charred that timber maybe why they put up another ceiling. Could the fault have been caused by the lead being melted in the fire?

Good job Steve! Thanks
how old is the pipe?
Top job mate, that must have been a pain 😤. Do you have oak floors out there? Only thing I could think of to rot the lead like that ?
Never seen pipe in that bad of condition.
old Northeast homes are always a crap shoot.
A Double Header from Steve! 👍
You are correct! I forgot to put the New England Draw on it! 👍

"so you wanna be a plumber, huh?" Nah - Just wanna live vicariously through you.
Nice job.....I hope you fairly compensate yourself....
If 2020 was a plumbing job, this is it!
Wow 😳 that was crazy on how that led bend rotted like that. ✌️
The question is if that pipe was that bad, what do the rest of the pipes look like.
If I had any desire to be a plumber, this changed my mind.
That job is a lot nastier and harder than it looks. I did the same except I melted out the Lead holding the Brass Ferrule and put the PVC pipe through the bell with that rubber donut. The room looked like it went through tornado like you said.
Nice repair, longest she doesn't pee on the floor will be ok.
😂
786otto that is my new classic Steve saying for 2020
🤣
Wow...just wow...what a nightmare Steve...I assume you have a guy you recommend to your customers for the drywall repairs when you have to open up walls and ceilings?
Great work
How you getting on with the rona, Steve? It's picking back up for me here in the UK 🇬🇧
My hardware store sells a gallon jug of "Pro Plumber" drain cleaner. Its 70-90% Sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid LOVES lead.
Shitshow averted. That could have turned in to a much bigger job. Nice save Steve!
I know its ill taste to ask how much this job was but how does the cost get split between the two customers? If this was an apartment would the building cover this job or what is the deal?
A 14 inch tuff is from bare studs so 14 from finished wall I plenty
The old how ya doing momma , shits hilarious
Nice work
Looks like the pooh shower was in operation for awhile. You handled it like clock work.
u lucky to have that brass, end,to connect to
Good job! Shit shows is the best videos to watch momma 😂
Why does that lead pipe have that weird branch coming off it?
That was a inlet for a bathtub, but was never used, so they plugged it. My house was built in 1950 and has a somewhat seemlier closet bend where they they hooked up the bathtub drain. Of course by 1950 they had long ago stopped using wiped lead bends and were using heavy weight cast iron. 70 years and probably has another half century of life left in it.
David Marquardt thanks . I have always loved old houses
I needed Molly to brighten my day at the end of this video
Holy shit somebody butchered that floor joist.
Cut out in the way ouch!
Waiting for this!
People stealing from elderly need to get a felony.
people stealing from anybody is a felony
Elderly with Alzheimers tend to accused pretty much anyone of thivery. Gotta be careful with that.
Great crusty Job Steve!
That has been leadings for years, not months.
My Dad had to do the SAME job for me in the first house i owned. Difference was he replaced the lead bend with cast iron...what a shit show!
Put the tarp down not to make a mess! LMAO
Suck it up buttercup. Use ur sayings all the time. Now I have another one for my repertoire. Ur plumbing jobs r always the best . Overcome and adapt. Very entertaining videos I really laugh. Thanks
Nice job for this kneighborhood
