    1. Don't rely on only one language resource (book, course, etc)
1.1. Beginning stage requirement: 1000-1500 words from everyday life + basic grammar
    2. Some language learning strategies might not suit you and that's fine. Find what works for you and gives result and enjoyment from the process.
    3. Watch content actively. For every 30 mins of a show/movie/series in your target language try to learn at least 3 new words.
    4. Be consistent, especially on early stages. It's ok not to learn it for some time, but try to be exposed to the language or use it daily.
    5. Don't get cocky with grammar. After overcoming the beginner stage continue learning it with small chunks consistently.
    6. Don't compare yourself to others but previous you

I messed up before. I was surrounded by Spanish speakers and felt like I HAD to learn Spanish. Every day I forced myself to do Spanish intake (I.e. Pimsleur, immersion, etc.) This caused pressure similar to high school Spanish class and ultimately I let it go for the time being. I’m now extremely happy consistently studying tagalog and look forward to studying Spanish again in the future.

I massively super agree on trying to copy/paste others method that isn't the right personality suit for you. INTJ makes soooooo much sense, I feel some kind of kinship with your personality and you inspire me a lot in your pursuit for knowledge etc with great devotion to your goals and I'm INFJ so we are similar in some ways but my daydreamy aspect need inspirations that keep me focused and while extroverts can be inspiring I can't connect the same way because the difference is too big.
This video came at the right point too because I've been too unwell during March to get studying done all freaking month which is so frustrating because I am super motivated to complete my goal and want to crush it but as in par with my personality I tend to hold myself to superhuman standards and realizing I'm human is hard. Learning how to best learn a language is discovering how your own brain (and probably some genes) work. Like everything else in life, the more you do it, the more personal and individual it becomes. And the master level is the state when you basically know how to run your own brain and body like an F16. And teach others and tell them not to follow you :)

I don’t usually use Meyers Briggs to understand people, but hearing you say you are INTJ too suddenly makes a whole lot of sense! My Chinese learning has been slowish because I will learn a lot and then not study at all. It comes in waves. Maybe I just need to include more media in my daily life. I need to try billi billi. Yeah beat your own best score!! 🙌🏻 Glad to see you’re looking well 🙏🏻

  • @MelissaJetzt
    @MelissaJetzt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I’m INTJ as well! Even with English as my native language, I came to a high level by writing a lot. And being able to do that helped my public speaking in ways I didn’t expect. I didn’t become advanced in my native language (I mean I have actually studied English to a high level academically and am a professional freelance writer) by talking. I did it by journaling my academic journey on Tumblr tbh. lol.
So it’s ironic; because German grammar is difficult (really stuck on cases rn) I feel demotivated to make so many mistakes in my German writing. But writing more is exactly what will help me overcome it.

As an INTJ, makes sense why your my favorite polyglot haha, may not be perfect science but there is a method to the madness, its a decent system for generalizing and often accurate. Also I almost skipped learning today, so thanks for motivating me!

Great advice, Ikenna! Your videos inspired me to start my language learning journey, and I appreciate how you emphasize that every person is different with their learning.
I can’t wait for the video on MBTI personality types! Have you heard of the enneagram personality test? I recently learned about it and love how insightful it is! Would love to see a video about language learning and the enneagram too (or even just your thoughts on it)! I’m INJF, Type 9, and learning Spanish (B1) and Tagalog (A1). Take care! 😊🙏🏽

    Hi, Ikenna!
I've been watching your videos and it made me improve my English learning.
I hope you be good and keep talking about polyglots and methods to improve all languages.
After I reach the B1/C1 level I think I'll learn Spanish again and after that, I'll have my harder challenge: Learn Russian by myself.
    Thanks for all.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, always appreciate your words.
I'd like to add one point, which I did and sometimes still do wrong. And that is focusing on your progress & success. I personally got that idea from a german "money-coach" (Bodo Schäfer). The method obviously was created to make more money. But it will make life easier imo and can help with language learning too. Plus, it is really simple: Write down your progress/success or what you achieved every single day. Five things should be optimal, just write down as many as you like. If you don't find five or even none at all, don't worry too much. Just think of something that you are thankful of, even if it is, that you got two healthy legs. There's always something there ;) It will help you to focus on the positive things and that will make things easier for you.
In school, mostly only your mistakes are pointed out, in a deep red color. I think focusing on our mistakes, or negative things in general, can cause damage to our self-esteem. You probably can't change the system, but you can certainly change the way you perceive things.
I've been doing the above method for 2 months now (just checked), which actually surprises me :D - I usually am not that committed to something.
The method is especially useful to recover quicker from the down-days, where lying in bed is all that you think of. It helps me and I truly hope it also helps you.

    Great video!
    Here's a solid language-learning approach:
    1. Use a course like Assimil to get the first 1,000 words (passively); then...
    2. Continue passive development by simultaneously:
    a) Anki-ing the next 4000 most common words (use a frequency dictionary to create passive sentence cards, from target language > native language)
    b) Engaging in daily Intensive listening (of real dialogues/news reports with transcript until each recording is easy [may take 100+ repletions! - make sure to take advantage of dead time])
    c) Engaging in daily extensive reading or listening (comprehensible input - seek lower-intermediate material, aim for 80%+ comprehension)
[do this until can comprehend at least 80% of novel authentic spoken dialogue]
    3. Start speaking (and keep up your daily input) by simultaneously:
    a) studying pronunciation and shadowing (a month of this is fine)
    b) speaking to self, practice explaining personal stories (like a previous holiday or experience) to an imaginary audience several times (recording words and grammatical structures you don't know [and making new passive sentence Anki cards with them).
    c) speak with tutor, lots. At first focus on the rehearsed stories; later become more spontaneous. Obviously keep noting and Anki-ing new words/structures as you come across them.
    4. Now upper intermediate/ early advanced stage is reached, every day (for almost the rest of your life):
    a) speak to yourself/ with a tutor/ live in country
    b) listen to target language
    c) continue developing/Anki-ing new vocabulary specific to your interests/ profession.
    5. Revel in glory.
    You're welcome. X

I'm learning Thai for 1 year or so and I've made all the mistakes you listed 😂 i watched a lot of Thai series but not actively and u're right, it kinda a waste of time after a while. And then I got cocky with the grammar and realized that I can only say basic sentences. Feels like I wasted at least few months. As an INTJ, it irks me so much that I could've done it more efficiently.

    1. Overly reliant on a single resource
This is true. I found myself only using duolingo and never getting to the level I wanted to be. Until I started using multiple methods now I’m intermediate (B2) in my target language and I haven’t even used duolingo in a year. Not saying it’s anything wrong with duolingo just using one thing doesn’t help
    2. Basically (don’t do what other people do because everyone is different personality wise) and learns different. I’m an introvert.
    3. Active listening and not passive listening write down the words
Some people learn languages from watching Netflix and listening to music but for me personally I need more than that to truly learn a language. I envy people that have a high level from just tv.
    4. Consistently
    5. Grammar
I need grammar 😂 I’m always studying grammar rules but I like it
    6. Don’t compare yourself to others. Only compare yourself to yourself

Hello ikemma and I have seen your videos of 120 days learning Spanish and I would tell you that you only need to learn the times of the words, since we use it a lot in Spanish for example: we are, we will be or we were. that now in the google translation it may come out with two sets of words but in Spanish it is only one, as a curious fact I am from Chile (which would be like Scottish English, I mean the worst branch, or the most difficult to understand by its added in the language), I would recommend in case you like that you learn from videos spoken by Chileans, since as I said it is the most difficult to understand, the rest will be easy to understand. Some clues that you can find is that we speak very fast, we eat some letters like "S" or "Z" to finish pronouncing things, we have words of the country added to Spanish

Please keep doing this type of videos, it really helps to have some things to consider that people usually don't. As if they only see what's above the surface but never underneath. And I definitely agree that the way you should be learning stuff, should be suited best for you, and only you.
And as for my experience, I wish I watched natives explain things about their language and culture in their own language sooner.
