    I suffered from a stroke recently after 24 years of substance abuse including heavy drinking and hard recreational drugs. It was a miracle I left the hospital with only minor affects and I promised myself that night that I needed to change my life. I have been 5 weeks sober since the day I was emitted to the ER.

    • @pl6818
      @pl6818 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Davis Thanks - it was described by the doctors as cryptogenic meaning they weren't able to identify the exact physical cause (like blood pressure levels, cholesterol, etc). After a candid discussion with them about my past and existing lifestyle the consensus was that it was due to my 20+ years of smoking, decades of heavy drinking (often binges at a time), and pretty frequent use of cocaine and period use of estacy. It doesn't sound like we have similar lifestyles but let my words be a lesson for you to dodge that bullet before it happens to you. It's certainly not something you would wish on anyone so while I don't know You, do what you can to make the lifestyle changes your need man. Hope that helps.

      Word of warning. I had a stroke in year 2000 drinking too much gin in Hong Kong. My sobriety didn't last. Easy to start again so like all these sites will tell you need support to continue to be sober. You cannot do it by yourself. Find the support you like, AA etc.

    Alcohol is the great deceiver, it gives the illusion that it is relaxing, calming, rewarding and empowering but it isn't any of these things. There are no pluses to drinking all it will do is take everything away from you and leave you with an emptiness that can only be replenished with more alcohol.

    The focus on not doing it today really worked wonders for me when I was going through nicotine withdrawal. The thought of never being allowed to smoke again felt oppressive and really stressed me out but I was able to let it go and just focus on not smoking on that very day which was so much easier.

    Wow, loved this video, everything that was said makes so much sense and I can relate to. Triggers and one day at a time is what mostly stood out for me. I had amazing times on triple vodkas and red bull, but also crashed my Bmw through a house wall and nearly ended up in their swimming pool. And no, insurance didn't pay, I was wasted. Currently in AA, really enjoying and loving sobriety. Do what works for you, good luck and much love to all 💖

    Saying I’ve watched thousands of these is def an exaggeration. I have watched hundreds. Never really said “let me put these vids on for help”. I like listening to stories and stories of people overcoming addictions are some of my favorites. I’m fighting a heroin addiction myself so I can relate. Normal lay down. Pushed play on this one. Sounded interesting like most, alittle worried about the length at first. As soon as you started on “step 1” you snapped me out of my cloud. If not the best I’ve seen then def top 3. Bless you. Still on lesson 4, gonna have to rewind a little but that’s kool. I knew all these but the way you put it woke something in me. I love you. Thank you

    great video i've been sober for about 3 months now and truly never felt better. the hardest part is giving up "friends" who you only interact with in the types of situations where drugs and/or alcohol are involved. some will understand and be happy for you others will try to peer pressure you into falling back into your old ways. those are the ones you must cut out in order to be successful with sobriety.

    Speaking from experience, our focus cannot be “not drinking”! That is living in the problem. The compulsion, or temptation to drink will be replaced by the development of a spiritual condition. In other words, “getting outside of ourselves”. Alcohol is NOT the root problem, I am! After almost twenty six years of continuous sobriety “drinking” is not a part of my consciousness. Why?...because I live in the “solution”! Best wishes!

    Thanks Dani, it's great to listen to you sharing your experiences. I'm 5 months in, and the advice about reminding myself why I enjoy sobriety, like waking up with a clear head each morning, and why I'm actively choosing it again today, and not romanticising my drinking past, really resonates with me. Great video! All 6 reasons are something I expected. I am 18 months sober and can relate to everything you said. The biggest thing I had to learn when getting sober was that alcohol was bringing nothing positive to my life. Everything I was doing could be accomplished without alcohol and nothing would be taken from the situation. Once I accepted that, it was much easier to stop. Congratulations on 6 years (hopefully it is 9 years now!)!!! It is also so true to just take it one day at a time. One step seems like nothing, but string together a thousand steps and you've gone somewhere. :)

    Sobriety: "lots of loneliness" "lots of cravings" "isolation" "lost friends" "you have to decline things" "no outlet for emotions" "scarily real" "still a challenge" "no escape" "very hard" "gotta learn how to cope" "you will be surrounded by triggers" "feel like I'm missing out" "you may need to walk out of weddings". How about an alternative...moderation. No buying booze to bring home. I repeat, no buying alcohol to bring home. If you're out with friends, have one, or two. . At a wedding? Have a drink. At home alone? NO drinking. Sunday afternoon watching Netflix? No drinking. Friend comes over and brings a bottle of wine...have a glass -- whatever is leftover, they bring with them

      Yeah, that doesn’t work when you have a drinking problem. Rationalizing situations in which you can drink is a slippery slope.

    When i get home from work I drank 6 to 8 beers every night while cooking meals for wife and kids and house work. I'm now 45 and very fit for my age but started to put on weight so I stopped drinking harder than I thought feel great now fit again.

    i drink alone without anyone noticing... and all bad things happened is when i was sober... and to the point where i can drink 0,7 liter wodka bottle a day and no one notice it. separate it in 3 parts 7 shots in morning, 7 during lunch, and at night, and then hide the empty bottle, and opening new one next day.

    Read Allen Carr’s book on drinking - it takes away all the anxiety about stopping. Someone has put the audiobook on TH-cam. 8 hours long.
