@@Koekfluksthegreat Really? I played this game start to finish with Hard Mode and it wasn't too hard until chapter 4, but I had been upgrading HP a lot so it still wasn't too bad. Bug fables is a perfect mix of paper Mario, Mario RPG, and Mario&Luigi . Perfect mix of action RPG, medal building, depth in characters. The spy cards super fun
I still don't get how you're so underrated! This really got me thinking about the mechanics of the game, and why I connected with it so well. The challenge is half the reason I love the game. Everything about your vids are so cozy and right up my alley. Awesome job!
Something I really like about Bug Fables is its art style! It looks cheap, it looks simplistic, it looks like the world was drawn by an artistic child. Its the kinda thing you would look at and think "whoever drew this was a novice" (until you notice how _consistent_ it is). And somehow that makes it all the more charming.
One major gripe I do have with Bug Fables' battle system is the lack of special moves. In the first two paper Mario games, special moves were an essential resource that you needed to manage, but also served as your only renewable resource in battle. This made it so that HP and FP were both in turn renewable, but at a slow rate that made you think about whether using a special move was worth it. In Bug Fables, it feels like every random battle, especially on hard mode, puts a little too much of a drain on your resources for my taste. It also makes it so that Leif's stat boosts are very rarely worth your time since they cost so much for so-so effects. I get that it's a personal preference thing, and I enjoy the vast majority of Bug Fables' battle system, but I think that special moves could've gone a long way in allowing me to enjoy Bug Fables more.
It is a little sad, but there are eventual options to combat the lack of healing/refreshing special moves such as the Core, Buzz and Do Nothing medals - though admittedly they all consume valuable Medal Points, and the Buzz medals hit the problem that they are useless for boss fights. The attacking special moves feel a little less necessary in Bug Fables though, due to a lack of enemies that hurt you if you try to attack them (thank goodness they got rid of Bristles!) - you can beat down almost anything in this game with basic attacks, it just might take a while.
I really don't care about the idea of having another resource to manage; special moves are just skills that for some reason operate on a different resource, I don't mind them streamlining that back to skills. HOWEVER Stylish moves were a wonderful addition for different reasons, and I do feel their absence is painful. Figuring out all of the stylish move timings was fun. Having action commands to do the basics and extra action commands to do just a little bit extra is very fun. And watching the crowd go nuts while I top off my boring standard attack with four backflips and a pose is _fantastic fun._ In that aspect, Bug Fables is great in terms of base mechanics but in terms of how battles evolve to keep a player's visual interest, I think it's got a ways to go. And that makes sense. TTYD's special attacks are flashy and the partners are more varied, despite having less depth. Whereas with Bug Fables I got a bunch of new moves that I never used because whirlwind boomerang moves are OP.
Something i also really like from bug fables is how they ramp up difficulty, in TTYD when the enemies started getting more health and damage the game straight up gifts you upgrades with the super boots, ultra hammer and permanent partner buffs, making it so you do not have to think much about it and just blindly brute force the rest of the game Bug fables, in the other hand, Gives you nothing but the level ups, some skills and badges and then asks You, the player, to step up your game if you want to keep up with the enemies that the game throws at you via the badges, items and skills you've gained so far. it just feels so good winning in the late game without needing the game to throw +2 permanent damage upgrades at you
Dude this video is awesome. It's a travesty that it only has 1k views. You put into words everything I love about this game. I'm gonna share this everywhere.
P.S. The most broken build/late game strategy I personally found in the game wasn't even the poison build. It was: Kabbu - Do nothing and be a tank Vi - Glass cannon w/ Miracle Matter (preferably two of them) Lief - It doesn't matter what he does. He will probably die and stay dead the entire battle. I will admit, once I discovered this strategy it did sour the game for me. I played several randomizers and if I got the required badges early on I already knew I had an unbeatable strategy that works on every battle. I'm really excited for Moonsprout's next game though!
I recently got a strong itch for Paper Mario Classic, so I got this game and it's currently kicking my ass in chapter 3 as I scramble to figure out just what builds are most viable. I won't take off Hard Mode or Hard Hits, though, because my greed is second only to Vi's.
From a bit of a game-dev perspective, and having just finished a second playthrough with the "RUIGEE" code active - Smaller numbers are nice for making everything feel more significant, but it also is a LOT harder to balance since even just 1 point can make a huge difference, hence another argument for why later playthroughs can easily become trivial Paper Mario and Bug Fables see this in the form of Mario's Power Bounce and Vi's Tornado/Hurricane Toss, because 1 extra attack point translates to a lot more bang for your buck out of all 3 of those skills These 3 games nonetheless handle small numbers almost perfectly I'd argue, those attack buffs are relatively few and far between or not the most reliable
I started playing this game during Christmas and I enjoyed it and I still enjoy it anytime I come back to it. It's a lot harder there are a lot more combos you can do 100 complete I truly recommend this game for people who want a challenge or just want a cheap game that's fun. All the way around. Thanks for making this video it may be a year but I truly hope more people play this game
I learned while playing to not underestimate vi because she can hit every enemy on screen except if they are armored and shes often needed to even be able to do damage
This was a good video! I grew up playing the first two Paper Marios (I used to rent the first one from Blockbuster all the time lol) so I was super excited for Bug Fables and it did the opposite of disappoint. It really perfects the PM formula and I can't wait to see more from its developers.

As a long time fan of the paper mario series it seems criminal I haven't played Bug Fable until recently and holy shit is it a great game! Couldn't agree more with everything you've said.
i think it's better for graphics to look the way they look instead of TTYD, because who knows how longer would this game not be released? (i put my bets on "until 2033 at least")
I played through the whole game on my first playthrough with the hard mode AND the hard hits badge THE ENTIRE TIME since I got hard hits, Suffices to say, I got my ass handed to me a buch of times, but it was completely worth it because beating any boss was SOOOO rewarding, funnily enough I think the boss I struggled with the most was Monsieur Scarlet, because I fought him as soon as chapter 3 started and I sucked at blocking and with the extra damage he dealt HE ALSO HEALED MORE!! But yeah it was so fun I 100% recommend
Minor spoilers for Bug Fables: My only two real problems with Bug Fables is that once you get to chapter three, you essentially have an infinite amount of berries. All you have to do is take the quest that unlocks Spy Cards, defeat the card masters, and take the boat to metal island. If you can’t afford it, you can play against the card masters again to get more berries. Then you just need to win the Spy Cards tournament whenever your low on berries. Second, after Leif unlocks the shield, you can skip most of the random encounters by just constantly using the shield. By the way, I love Spy Cards so don’t take this comment the wrong way. Also, when I played the game for the first time, I never really had to think about what badges I equipped, and got through the game just fine (I had hard mode on). Other than that, Bug Fables doesn’t have any other flaws I can think of. It’s an incredible game that I will eventually 100%. Great video by the way!
ive never really tried this way of grinding berries and yeah my first play through i didnt understand medals so i barely equipped anything and just used fly drop and frozen drill for the most part now that im 400+ hours in the real way to play bug fables is with menu codes . a combination of codes that fixes the problem you just listed is hardest and morefarm put together a playthrough of that was fun but i did get to a point where all i had to do is use vi (2 attack exchanges 2 poison attackers hard charge and adbp enhancer) hurricane toss to kill any boss in around 2-4 turns thats why i find real challenge in tuffbugs / sometime mystery? tldr; you can fix these problems with menu codes (hardest morefarm tuffbugs)
Mind you, the bank giving you 3% (rising to 6% at 500 berries) compound interest every half hour also suggests that money isn't meant to be much of an object in this game... e: I see this got nerfed in v1.1. Still, even 2% and 4% (with a cap of 75 berries) every half hour is strong, if not quite as broken.
I am 100% fine with Berries being easy to get. I hate money grinding in games. So long as there is any consistent method to get berries, then it’s optimal to grind for them. If it’s a choice between having to cut the same couple of bushes over and over or playing a game of Spy Cards, I much prefer the latter. In my Hardest+Mystery run of the game I banned the bank, and all that did was get me to waste a frankly insane amount of time grinding. Before Chapter 3 I was cooking and selling Crisbee Donuts so that I had enough items to get through the factory. Before Chapter 2 I was cutting the same goddamn bushes again and again. Now I’m playing Tuffbugs and the grind is insane. I am absolutely using the bank and I do not care.

I actually don’t like the leveling system for health and it relating to badge points I think paper mario did it better. I don’t like how the game discourages you from picking health by only upgrading by 1 compared to paper mario which encouraged every upgrade equally and did not push you to upgrade certain things like badges. I do think bug fables does the medals better but I think paper mario did the leveling system better.
It's a pity that this game is basically dead now, aside from the small cult that great games like Hollow Knight has, just smaller than HK I have not seen anywhere near as much mods for this game than it deserves
Hollow knight is at least still alive in public concience because of how impossibly well some things turned out for it, and will come back stronger than ever with silksong. Bug fables even for it's own community is dead, it was just kind of a one and done deal with little substance to keep people engaged. A sequel like silksong with devs being more experienced and a pretty good start from the first game would do wonders for it, especially with it's potential, but it looks like it's just not meant to be. Which is a shame with it's role in the industry and message it holds
I would probably play Bug Fables if it had more of an identity On top of that, the mid move actions look kind of same-y to paper mario I'm sure its a good game, but I just personally dont want to buy it
It WAS on Game Pass, but it got removed like 2 months ago, I probably wouldn't buy it on Steam unless it was on sale, but the game pass version was fun and took about 40 hours of play time, definitely worth the 1 dollar I paid for game pass that month
It being so similar to Paper Mario is exactly what makes it so good though, I would have had no interest in even playing this game if it wasn't for that.
@trobotictac I mean, even if it's too similar to Paper Mario, it's still a completely new experience with new moves, new badges, new systems, and new characters. Absolutely worth it
10:58 while you're right that normal guarding is 8 frames, superguarding is actually only 3 frames which is exactly why I don't think superguarding is broken since it takes skill to pull off consistently, if it actually was 6 frames then I would agree on it being broken because 6 frames would be insanely lenient but 3 frames is very strict making it hard to get good at and pull off consistently which is why I don't think it's accurate to call it "broken". On top of that, there are actually plenty of situations where it would actually be more advised or more optimal to normal guard instead of superguard, like on stage hazards and status inflicting attacks such as Beldam and Ice Puff's ice attack which can freeze (the only status effect that Feeling Fine doesn't protect against) and Bonetail's breaths, going for the superguard in these situations is often too risky and unless you're really consistent at superguarding these attacks, it's usually better to just play it safe and go for a normal guard. Not to mention that going for a normal guard over a superguard could also be useful for getting into danger (5HP or less) and/or peril (1HP) faster or immediately, and if you don't remember this is beneficial because the badge Power Rush increases attack by 2 when in danger and Mega Rush increases attack by 5 in peril (and if you have both Power Rush and Mega Rush equipped and you're at 1HP, they stack meaning you get a total of +7 attack at 1HP, which is absolutely insane). So there are several situations where guarding is either advised over superguarding or more optimal than superguarding. Also I actually consider the easy difficulty of the first two Paper Mario games to be a good thing because them being easy is what makes them such great challenge run games and allows for more possibilities of challenge runs, the games can be as easy or as hard as you make them, if you think they're too easy then add some restrictions to make them harder. For example you could only level up one stat for the entire game and if that's too easy then you could also do it with no items and no superguarding as well, or you could do a level zero run (where you only level up BP but never actually use any of that BP so it's as if your stats are permanently at 10HP 5FP 0BP), you could do a Mario alone run where you can only use Mario and can never use partners in battle, or a disabled run where you equip Jumpman and Hammerman at the same time (which makes you unable to use both jump and hammer) and Double Pain at all times, or do the pit of 100 trials as early as possible (known as a pre-Hooktail pit run since the earliest you can get into the pit without glitches or cheats is during chapter 1 before fighting Hooktail), a no healing no items run, no specials, partners only, the list goes on. While Bug Fables also has a lot of challenge run potential, it doesn't have as much challenge run potential as the first two Paper Mario games and I think the main reason for that is because of its harder difficulty which is why I think the easier difficulty of the first two Paper Mario games actually works in their favour and is something I actually see as a good thing rather than a flaw.

I have not seen anywhere near as much mods for this game than it deserves
Hollow knight is at least still alive in public concience because of how impossibly well some things turned out for it, and will come back stronger than ever with silksong. Bug fables even for it's own community is dead, it was just kind of a one and done deal with little substance to keep people engaged. A sequel like silksong with devs being more experienced and a pretty good start from the first game would do wonders for it, especially with it's potential, but it looks like it's just not meant to be. Which is a shame with it's role in the industry and message it holds
First?
Hahaha, bug
But hollow knight better bug
Make bug bug again
You can't really compare the two, they're both two completely different kinds of games.
@@Tesssssaaaaa lies
They both have bug that close enough
@hotbeanjuicecoffee9914 that's where their similarities end though.
I would probably play Bug Fables if it had more of an identity
On top of that, the mid move actions look kind of same-y to paper mario
I'm sure its a good game, but I just personally dont want to buy it
It WAS on Game Pass, but it got removed like 2 months ago, I probably wouldn't buy it on Steam unless it was on sale, but the game pass version was fun and took about 40 hours of play time, definitely worth the 1 dollar I paid for game pass that month
It being so similar to Paper Mario is exactly what makes it so good though, I would have had no interest in even playing this game if it wasn't for that.
@@Tesssssaaaaa yeah true, but I could just play paper mario, bug fables doesn't seem to be too unique to that
@trobotictac I mean, even if it's too similar to Paper Mario, it's still a completely new experience with new moves, new badges, new systems, and new characters. Absolutely worth it
That's probably good I never played Paper Mario because I love Bug Fables so much since I tried it out
10:58 while you're right that normal guarding is 8 frames, superguarding is actually only 3 frames which is exactly why I don't think superguarding is broken since it takes skill to pull off consistently, if it actually was 6 frames then I would agree on it being broken because 6 frames would be insanely lenient but 3 frames is very strict making it hard to get good at and pull off consistently which is why I don't think it's accurate to call it "broken".
