Where did you start your musical journey? Where did it all begin for you? I got the chance to go back to Guildford, meet up with Lee and get a Music Store Tour, it was a blast. The Shop has grown dramatically, it’s like the Tardis, the same frontage but a huge amount of expansion behind! Join me as we take a walk around Anderton’s and frankly reminisce!
Funnily enough, back in 2001/2 I tried to get a job at Andertons as I was studying at the Academy of Contemporary Music. They just didn't have any vacancies at the time, so I ended up at Wetherspoons 😔😅
It started for me in the same place as you at Anderton's as I came from, just up the road from you in Church Crookham, Camberley. That was back in the 70's and it was the original, much smaller shop. I bought my first Fender Precision bass there and when I wasn't playing it I would sit and stare at its beauty. So glad the business survived and is clearly thriving. I spent many thousands of hard earned pounds in there over the years. I have good memories of a terrific manager there called John Hulk who would kindly let me take various bits of gear to try out and which I would always end up buying...can't see that happening nowadays.
I remember coming into the shop in the early/mid 2000's with the intention of buying a Line 6 hybrid amp (which was being touted at the time as the greatest thing since sliced bread.) This guy called Lee basically told me to do myself a favour, wait a few weeks, and they would be getting in a couple of Epiphone Blues Custom 30 combos which would blow the Line 6 into the weeds (I paraphrase.) I subsequently ordered one (had to wait a few weeks as apparently there was limited availability) and am forever grateful to Lee for his advise. As an incidental effect of Lees advice, I wouldn't have got to know Pyotr Belof who designed the BC30 for Epiphone/Gibson if I'd bought the Line 6.

Ahhhhhh! This brought back such memories. Andertons was my local music store that I would visit whilst living in the Guildford area, when I first started playing back in the late 70s / early 80s (in a fairly well known local band); maybe you even sold me something Warren (drumsticks? Guitar picks? Strings? Who knows)? I've seen various iterations of the store layout since then. And I see it's changed yet again (e.g. drums downstairs now), so I must go re-visit sometime soon. Legendary!
What a small world ! Andertons is the main place where I get my gear. To learn the history, Lee carrying on the family business and to find out you used to work there is crazy and cool 🙌🤙
Andertons is a great shop. Brilliant customer service and a huge range of stuff to choose from. I popped in a few weeks back and got me a new bass weapon. I had been to a competitor in Brighton the week before but their service and selection was so poor Andertons got my business. Thanks Andertons!

my first guitar was a spanish (classical) guitar my sister was given to learn it. Of course she didn't. A few years later I had the sudden urge to learn Yesterday on the guitar to impress a girl from school, who didn't understand what a musical (and in general) genius I would become . That would be 1988 ca. That girl would be 51 now, and I haven't shed a tear about her in 30+ years, but I still play the guitar!
Warren, I had no idea! So glad you showed us this walk down memory aisle. I must confess to "needing" to buy something from Anderton's, not that they needed support from an amateur from Northern California, but it kind of felt like a community thing to do. So they shipped out a Duesenberg guitar. The staff were so nice and they included a signed photo card of Lee and Pete, which I framed and hung in the studio next to a letter from the Queen and Buckingham Palace! Ha! Maybe Lee would be amused.
Okay, Warren, here's what happened. It was a reply to mine. When I retired (from one job) I had time on my hands. I'd read the Queen enjoyed receiving letters, including those from the far flung commonwealth, for example. Feeling very nervous to get it right, I studied how to address Her Majesty and where to send it. I wrote it in longhand, for some reason, and made it as heartfelt and sincere as I possibly could, trying to imagine the Queen reading it. It was a letter of birthday wishes for her 93rd. I respected her lifetime emphasizing service, wanted to show that respect and NEVER expected a reply. Perhaps my no-expectation was increased by my embarrassing handwriting, a scrawl no doubt convincing her I'd retired at age 7!! Anyway, I was astonished and had it framed and now it's hung in my music studio, above a Morgan AC20 Deluxe and, since the Duesenberg from Anderton's arrived, next to the signed card from Lee and Pete, not terribly far from a signed poster from Tom Bukavac. Now that I think of it, maybe I could persuade you to send something to join them on that wall of majesty. You certainly have helped me understand enough of recording to get started creating songs and I'm grateful for that. Now you see what's out here in this community you've created. Thank you, Warren. Cheers.
As a uk resident I only use GAK or andertons..Last one I got from Lee was an LTD EC 1000 piezo in blue...awesome guitar.turned out it was the one chappers played in a DM, SD, EMG shootout.

I know what he means about the shift in PA equipment world. I have had many different brands of active PA but now tend to drift back to classic passive units like Ramsa and the S200s he mentions. I remember gigging with a band at the Hurlingham Club many years ago - all they had was a pair of S200s but they sounded phenomenal - I don't know what desk mixer they used (for all I know this may be a vital addition) but it was legendary
Buying Zyn cymbals from Golumb’s at Glasgow Cross because they were affordable. They were also a family business and they were close enough to a massive footfall area to get passing trade.

Ok, first things first, how do you have a letter from the Queen?

@@dandanthesoundman7607I know! Cricket cricket haha I want to know!
Cheers.
@@gbarge4that’s an amazing story! What did she write in her response letter?
As a uk resident I only use GAK or andertons..Last one I got from Lee was an LTD EC 1000 piezo in blue...awesome guitar.turned out it was the one chappers played in a DM, SD, EMG shootout.
Thanks ever so much for sharing
Great video Warren. I bought my Sire bass guitar from that shop just before covid in Feb 2020. I can't believe you used to work there!
Good choice! It was a great place to work
Great Video ! i have used their online shop quite few times within last few years and i been always very happy indeed ! :) as for Sire Marcus Miller basses - Highly Recommended - i got 2 J basses -V7 Vintige and V5 5 string 24 frets both from Andertons and i love them so much. Best basses out there within this price range . I sold my Fender bass as i stop playing it after o got Sire .. greetings from Scotland ✌♥🎵
Its changed a lot since I was last there... was last there some time in 2016/17....
Yes, continually evolving
I used to live in Woking (1998-1999), so Andertons was my local music store - it's changed dramatically since even then!
Wow! Yes, it’s doing an amazing job
Always went to Kingfishers in Fleet, always wondered what happened to that place.
Demo Booths. That’s brilliant. Anderton‘s success is so well deserved.
Yes! Very smart
you’re a legend dude , very lucky, very proud of you 👍🏻 you’ve made it ☝️📈🔭🐥
I love captain! I miss chappers and captain reviews…I don’t even buy guitars, I just felt like I was hanging out with by buds

When I lived nearby Gothenburg in Sweden there still is today the same music shop. It´s name is MUG. That transleted straight to Music without Borders. A greeat music store. So if you are in Gothenburg, visit that place.
Marvellous! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Hilarious that you had that connection.
Wow, that was a nice vid!
Thanks ever so much
Buying Zyn cymbals from Golumb’s at Glasgow Cross because they were affordable. They were also a family business and they were close enough to a massive footfall area to get passing trade.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
The holdroyd Guilford is a great music venue.... There's nowhere else where you can have a Sunday roast dinner with watching a live band :)
i used to visit kingfisher music all the time in the early nineties,i bought my peavey 5150 amp from there around that time.
Very cool! I may have been there too!
I like this, Englishman in Guildford!
Jolly good! Tally ho!
Haha Indeed! I grew just a few miles away from Anderton's!

Nice one Warren, really great vibe between you guys, not stepping on each other but putting a lot of valuable information out. I would be interested in you doing Musicstore in Köln too as a European comparison. Live PA room and Mic Rooms are pretty cool there. Cheers 😊
That sounds great! Yes, Lee is so much fun to hang out with
First guitar was a Hagstrom jazzer from a small guitar shop in Croydon… a favourite haunt was Rockbottom though - it was a real Aladdin’s cave at the time!
Wow, I could have possibly bought music gear from both you guys. I bought a fender amp in kingfisher around 1990 and a strat from anderslns in 1996. Small world but a greT world.
Saving up some money then looking to go to andertons in a few months and looking to get a guitars, the shop looks amazing
