I have two of my favorite studios. Sadly, neither one of them are around anymore. ATR studios in Lafayette Ca. where I learned to be a sound engineer. And Fantasy Studios in Berkeley ca. Where, I recorded a few bands. ATR was the best drum room I have ever heard. You can hear the room on the Too Slim and the Taildraggers "Rock Em Dead" album. Oh and that was recorded on a Tascam MS-16, 1 inch tape. Fantasy was the best recording studio in San Francisco. I mis both places, but my heart will always be with ATR studios. Good talk back story from ATR. We used to do the preproduction for Eddie Money and Bill Graham would sometimes stop by to see how things were going. Bill once picked up a pen flashlight, the black metal ones. He thought it was the talk back mic button, and I used to have to watch him so that when he pushed it, I would push the talkback on the board so that Eddie could hear him. We never had the heart to tell Bill that is not the talkback button.
@@Producelikeapro I liked working at Miloco, great vibe. Rehearsal places are ten a penny; most of the places are just full of run down kit, smelling of sweat. Enjoyed Silent Hill in Guildford.
Walked past that studio a thousand times but never been through the doors - I had no idea what a gem we had in Brighton - thanks for the tour. Nice change from LA/Nashville tours too - despite the weather!
1:00 "...these fishy guys..." perfect! 😄 ahhh a floodplain a wonderful place for a studio!! but its great to see a classic building being recycled and made use of eh? once again so much tasty classic gear! Could be wrong, but if I’m not mistaken, in the first 10 seconds of this video, isn’t that Gene October from the legendary original punk band Chelsea, walking past Warren? There’s a tapestry of history with them, amongst having Billy Idol and Tony James pass through their ranks.
I’ve had quite a few encounters with the legend that is Gene, and just before the pandemic, he came on our former, local TV show on Channel 7 in Brighton. Love your videos by the way. th-cam.com/video/TYg_xuzYr0Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TNdLeKTqrFSp2pQ_
It was the walk that caught my eye first, then the hat, followed by the eyes. As said, I could be wrong, but if I had to put money on it, I’d make the bet. Ha-ha! If you know Gene, he’ll either not remember or be contrary about his presence walking past you. I’ll certainly show him the clip next time I see him and see what he says. Keep up the good work with the great videos and all the best, Paul Mex.
That place would have been a dream when I was a young person in Seattle. Well actually, it still is for me. What a great space! I love buildings from that era.
I'd have given 30 quid/bucks/doubloons for a rehearsal space back in my days lol. My band used a storage shed and it was sweltering/freezing all the time, yet we carried on, troopers that my mates were. So neat to see these guys are as much a part of the scene as they are a business.
Reminds me of S. I. R on Sunset blvdt in California (studio instrument rentals)... But they have no recording facilities. I sort of workedt / hung out there from 1987 to 1989 when I lived in California and the bldg took up a whole city block and it was much like this place and these places are super cool cuz they're like a city unto themselves. Celtic Frost was rehearsing there and I met Tom warrior... And Gene Simmons was behind one of the bands that was rehearsing and it was just an overall good memory of being in that environment all day long. I worked in the amp repair room with a guy named Frank Levi who was an old school fella from the days of the Birds and other 60s bands ...and he had pictures of Jimi Hendrix sitting on the bed in his bedroom with his guitar... It was cool being that close to a legend although it was just a picture taken in a friend's house.... The photo still made me feel like I was there.. And this place being this inexpensive? That's crazy...
The drummers incredibly important whether there are 1 or 3 mics on the kick. Bad drum performances cannot be fixed. Everything else can be. Great tour & conversation as always Warren.
I love the choice of mics. I wonder what the day rates for the two main studios are? Like many good studios, it's not published on their site. Big fan of Soyuz mics, U47s and Coles/Royer ribbon mics. Large high-ceilinged rooms with Parquet floors are fantastic for recording acoustic guitar too. I remember playing classical guitar in similar spaces, like Friends Meeting House main hall in Manchester, and was one of the nicest sounding rooms I played in. Maybe because the parquet floor makes up for the large room air loss.
29:25 I have 3 of those old 421 same color (MD 421N) , I don't know if that's the reason for the color but mine came from an old radio station, so maybe. BTW I need to get the connectors or adaptors for the old 3 pin DIN connectors .

It's currently being used for the speaher only... crocodile clipped into another amp head..... totally old school, probably a fire hazard. Anyone want to buy it?
We park in the Sainsbury’s parking lot! You can park there all day for a few pounds, I thought that’s what everyone does? It’s also free for the first two hours and it’s only 2 mins walk away
@@Producelikeapro Only one of our number was local and he walked! London/Reading/Eastbourne. Guess we were looking for easy load in/out, didn't know the area at all. All said and done, it's a fantastic studio.
JCM900 bah! If it's volume and tone you want, it can't keep up with the JCM800 as well as JMP and earlier plexis. And the JCM2000 actually does better than what the JCM900 was trying to do with high gain, it's really the last great era of Marshall. The 900 has no place on the Marshall Mount Rushmore, imo.
Any chance of seeing a studio that has something to offer than dark windowless rooms with the same old gear? Getting bored with seeing the same unattainable racks of iconic gear that most of us will never see or afford. anyone would think that you cannot make a good recording without Neve or API.
