No, we use the sledge to smash the concrete - a concrete sledge means it's a BIG HEAVY sledge used for busting cement. He's saying that he's like a beast of a stone smasher, no walls can contain or resist.
It pretty much came out of nowhere, just a jam between Dime and Vinnie that the band felt they HAD to record; the recording session was done too, so they were supposed to be packing up and leaving the studio but they scrambled to record "Primal Concrete Sledge". Fits really well between "Cowboys" and "Psycho Holiday" too.
You're not quite right, before Pantera there was a band in the southern US called Atheist who recorded an album called Piece Of Time that was way ahead of its time, there's a song called "I Deny" that has all the right ingredients, Celtic Frost played odd time down-tuned signatures in 1987.
"Journey to the Center of Your Mind" by Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes from 1968 had galloping about a decade before "Barracuda," but the world wasn't ready for it in 1968.
0:19 it's really interesting to check you the demo versions of the cowboys from hell album to see that transition. There's even a song called "The will to survive" that dindn't make it on the album that shows perfectly that shift. Shattered included an epic intro as well
Meshuggah were doing their syncopations, 4:3 figures and polymeters already on their first EP in 1989. Check the middle section of Cadaverous Mastication, for instance. Also, Helmet were onto these ideas on their first album in 1990. The opening riff of Blacktop is a good example. So it was kinda contemporary and hip at the time.
Exactly, I think it´s being a little bit of a fanboy to try to insinuate that Pantera were the first ones to do something that started to be popular on the 2000. when there where bands that clearly where more pioneers in that sense...
My take on what is a "Primal Concrete Sledge" could be way off, just my opinion: Primal, as something from within, old and instinctual Concrete is Hard Sledge, as in sledge hammer, for hitting So Primal Concrete Sledge is like something old or instinctual from within that hits hard.
I've been building a metal history theme park in Planet Coaster, and I made sure to make the queue and station building for my Pantera coaster completely out of ...concrete sledges. And there's netting over walkways to prevent loose articles that may fall out of the pockets of people on the coaster. So naturally I made sure those nets were ...suspended by chains.
I’ve always thought of the song in terms of “Primal. Concrete. Sledge” to describe its brutality. Primal being that crazy jungle beat in the beginning, Concrete, the heavy, chuggy riffs, Sledge, the delivery of how of it smashes through live.
Sleigh is pronounced slay in English, as in Slayer without er. Sledge is a type of hammer. Speaking of which, Peter Gabriel had a hit with Sledge Hammer in the 1980s.
huh, this is interesting. i've known primal concrete sledge for a long time, and all that time thought it's so fucking sick and heavy, but no one ever talked about it. my best friend has the cowboys from hell vinyl, but i don't recall him actually listening to it...and then this video shows up :)
It was always my favorite song on that album. Came out when I was in high school. I only saw them live once, and to be honest, I don't remember if they played it live. It's hard for me to remember concerts from the 90's.
yeah, growing up in the 80s with the big 4, when pantera busted open the drums changed the whole soundscape. Vinnie Paul changed what could be done. Just my observation.
I interpreted it as a primal use of a sledgehammer made of concrete. Someone is using this heavy destructive tool in a very aggressive/animalistic manner.
It’s the coolest riff because it was so short. Edit: I can play it standard and drop. Both are cool. Just depends on what guitar I’m wearing at the time. Semi~gayidity
Thank goodness we still had Pantera after Metallica died from suicide. Pantera is bigger than life, and I personally consider them one of those bands or artists that have kept me alive in the middle of this world of madness.
People say that "Bass is the Foundation of the Band." I disagree. Percussion is the foundation. And, a song should always be built like this: Drums --> Drum & Bass --> Drum, Bass, Guitar (and keyboard if there is one) --> Drum, Bass, All other instruments, and Vocals.
One of the coolest, grooviest, and heaviest drum parts ever written. Awesome to see a video on it!
Thank you!
@@AndriyVasylenko Keep up the great work, and stay safe out there!

This him smashing concrete bricks on the Mouth For War video.
Power Metal is an incredibly underrated album.
Metal magic, because Ride my Rocket.
Power Metal is my favorite!
Power metal kicks ass
The solo from We’ll Meet Again is literally one of Dimebags best solos.
Bro. Truth!🤘
The song that proves the bands intellect is "Immortally Insane".

Imagine hearing one of the best post-thrash openers, going to the heaviest song on the album, then **budududu dudú dudúdu budududu dudú dudúdu**
1:10 as someone who only knows English, I have no idea either
Me neither, but it sounds badass
Same

I'm happy to see some Atheist love there. Atheist was such a crucial band for progressive/technical death metal.
Don't forget Confessor from North Carolina which took this concept to its most extreme on 1991
You should listen to "Hard lines and sunken cheeks" bass part from the bridge, it's soooo good
The gallop in the 70’s by Heart in “Barracuda”, maybe?
"Journey to the Center of Your Mind" by Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes from 1968 had galloping about a decade before "Barracuda," but the world wasn't ready for it in 1968.
The gallop is backwards in barracuda
Thrash gallops have the opposite gallop
@@Frodojackwe shouldn't credit TN for anything.
Slaughtered!
Thank you
Slaughtered is in my top 3 Pantera faves. Might even be #1
**CoD zombie noises intensify**
Proto-djent. A very articulate and succinct use of genre terms right there, brother. Well done.
WOW!
I never thought you would talk about PST 88.
Lol. But seriously, we should talk about Power Metal some time

Love me some Pantera! 🤘🏻
This has always been my favorite pantera song lol everyone says they love cemetery gates but give me my PRIMAL CONCRETE SLEDGE every time 😈
Love your analysis, Andriy! That breakdown of Primal Concrete Sledge is so slick, it has stuck with me so hard!
Yes!! One of my favorite metal songs of all time
Yes! Give this monster of a track ALL that love! 🤘😍
And that ending though. Oh, what fun it is…
Dime went so hard in this song. Goddamn, I get goosebumps even thinking about it
My take on what is a "Primal Concrete Sledge" could be way off, just my opinion:
Primal, as something from within, old and instinctual
Concrete is Hard
Sledge, as in sledge hammer, for hitting

Oh' and the drummer is the backbone of any band! PANTERA was the most balls-out-in-your-face musical composition ever created!

You nailed it. Just like they did with that badass riff.

🛷 Primal concrete sled 🛷
Primal Concrete Sledge is my favorite song on the album.
2:23 haha I get the reference
Primal and The Art of Shredding have been my top 2 off of CFH since I first heard it in 92 (got it after I was introduced to Vulgar).
This was the best song live. The light syncopation made it unreal.

12:08 Jingle Primal Concrete Bells! 🥁
Bleed is not a gallop!
I just went to dimes and vinnies grave last night. PART ONE OF MY BUCKET LIST MARKED OFF
Real ones knew it was pivotal all along
Especially those who saw it live. I am jelous of that.

CFH 4LIFE!!
Primal concrete sledge just a bunch of non sensical words that somehow WORKS
Hear Biotech Is Godzilla by Sepultura, another short song that has everything for me!!
Rex uses a pick. You should too.
Also do something about how pantera never helped wrathchild america get bigger.

can you make 1 million pantera videos for me please?
PCS was my first thought, guess i was right

maybe iron maiden now?

1:28 not a sledge ❌
1:31 sledge ✅
Bro sees an AI pic of a concrete 'sleigh' and thought it was 'sledge' 🙄
'Walk' is the most cringe, hokey riff/song ever. Ever.
It’s when they heard Exhorder. IYKYK
