A lot of people simply see Xiao as an ‘emo’ teen with no positivity. The thing is, he’s never had a single spot of hope within his life. He’s been forced to kill countless of people in his life- the accumulated karma from their deaths has plagued Xiao with an never ending suffering. He cannot trust anybody because he’s worried that he’ll hurt them. Xiao is one of my favourite characters, and I’m glad Hamelin made something beautiful like this.
I had a disagreement with my ex roommate over this topic when I said I hate when characters with dark/tragic pasts get called edgy or emo. People forget what these two terms even mean. Edgy is some person trying to pretend to be cooler or dark by using alarming phrases and words when talking to others. Emo is a style/music subculture. Xiao neither of these. He’s not trying to be cool or make others uncomfortable. His speech can be rather harsh, blunt and/or disturbing, but he’s not doing it to make himself seem a certain way. He is simply saying the truth but lacks the social graces to be aware of the discomfort he may cause with them. He’s simply not used to speaking to others and comes from a time that talking about such things was probably common. And he’s not emo because he probably doesn’t even know what the hell that is. You could get away with Emo if you were writing a modern AU and Xiao was into that but that’s it. And neither is Xiao a teen. As someone with social issues and trauma, it sucks to hear characters you relate two or share similar issues with you, be reduced to edgy/emo for having those issues or having those issues affect how that act and speak in present time.
If anyone has ever had almond tofu before, you'd realize how *young* and innocent Xiao actually is, despite the 2000+ years he's technically been alive. Almond tofu is a dessert that's actually made with jelly and a candy-like almond syrup. (The name "tofu" simply comes from the fact that the jelly looks soft and bright like tofu.) Many versions of the dish visually look colorful and bright, and the taste is sweet and refreshing. It's a very simple and homely dessert. And most importantly, it isn't considered a luxurious or rare dish, but rather just a very normal and simple snack in Chinese culture. For me, I associate almond tofu with childhood because it was the kind of snack that elementary school me would sometimes look forward to after an afternoon of playing out in the sun. And it makes me realize that fighting, war, and death are really the only things he's known in all 2000+ years of his life. There's something sort of sad in the fact that of all the possible amazing foods he could have liked, the one that caught his attention is a common, simple dessert snack that any kid in Liyue would have tasted before. And any kid in Liyue could probably have almond tofu *whenever they wanted*, and yet to Xiao... it's the first sign of hope and light he has ever experienced. He considers what others easily pass by without noticing as something rare and worth cherishing, and that's clearly the result of being raised around constant bloodshed and war. And it's a really sad reminder that he would have had a normal, innocent life if it hadn't been for the war. He would've had light and hope and the childlike demeanor he seems to possess deep down. For Xiao, who has spent eons fighting and fighting instead of living, this simple and sweet dish reminds him of everything he doesn't have (and everything he longs for, though he won't admit it to anyone, including himself).

I feel like the fact that he takes on the form of a teenager also just hints at possible childishness and innocence that he may have once had or may have wished for during his lifetime. Growing up as a Yaksha surrounded by war and bloodshed would have stamped out any childlike innocence he may have had but it feels like a part of him yearns for it still, holding onto small things like normal desserts and the form of a boy rather than a man.
If I remember canon correctly, he likes it specifically because it tastes similar to the dreams he used to eat back when he was prisoner to another god before Morax freed him, hence why his special version of the dish is called "Sweet Dream"

Even though Venti is the reason why i came to Genshin Impact, Xiao is the one i ended up loving. I remembered first encountering Xiao at Wangshu Inn, i wasn’t really interested of him, but it was nice meeting a new character again. Yes, i wasn’t really interested of him until 1.3 version arrives. When i tested him in his test run and saw his banner, i thought he’s very cool and powerful so i decided to pull for him. His story quest and times of Xiao’s cutscenes in the Lantern Rite, i’m starting to like him more, like we’re getting to know Xiao from there. It saddens me a little that his first banner has come to an end without me getting him. Somewhere in March, I remember scrolling through Tiktok then i came across a video about Xiao’s past where he was enslave by an evil god and eats snow. I feel so bad for this man. It came to the point i digged more deeper through Xiao’s lores. From reading his character story, Matsuoka’s interview, fan animations. It had all me burst into tears. I had no idea Xiao has suffered so much. Like after discovering his past, i needed his rerun so bad. I even skipped Inazuma characters (Except Kazuha and Itto but sadly i didn’t get Kazuha) for Xiao. And now here i am maining this yaksha boi, i really enjoy playing Xiao so much. Even though i have few 5* star characters before Xiao, Xiao is actually the first character i crowned, make that tripled crown.

Xiao is that character that is too kind...so kind that to protect others he choose to be cruel, be it to himself and to those who tries to get close. I noticed this the first time he told the Traveler to stay away, not because he doesn't like them but because he doesn't want to hurt them with his presence. His choice of isolating himself from society is also because of this absolute kindness.
Xiao holds such a fucking special place in my heart. Back in October of 2021, my dad was in a horrible horrible space with his physical health, and I came across this one video of a xiao edit with the song earth boy playing in the back Those days I was already stressed with work, uni applications, future in general, my dads health, and was mostly out of this world, out of touch with reality, always daydreaming and breaking apart. I resonate with xiao so much.. I love his story so much.. he’s such an emotional support for me. In 2.4 he reran and I had him in my old account until it was ripped from me I can’t believe he’s being rerun again so soon.. darling you’re coming home.. 🥺
Same thing happened for me, except my dad died three years ago. And from then on whenever something bad happened, like finding my mom passed out in the middle of the night, my brother ending up in the hospital... I love how the purple yaksha’s mask is separate from the others because of how he turned on them all. But xiao still repects him as a former ally and remembers him and so he keeps him there.
I love Xiao so much and this might seem stupid, but even though he’s fictional, he has so much going on and I can relate to him being scared of getting close to others.. he’s scared he’ll hurt them, I am too. I’ve always wanted to make more friends and stuff but after all that’s happened, I’m always cautious about it. And I overreact over so many things. Sometimes my friends joke and stuff and it makes me mad. I feel so bad and I wish Xiao was real, I would try to be his best friend he’s ever had.
I'm so glad that traveler was able to lighten up a new path for xiao, even if it may be a small one. When we first encountered him, I thought of him as a regular character but now he's my favorite overall and my main. he deserves the world.

sure I joke around him being "emo and all" but irl he's literally one of my top kinnies, favorite, and comfort character- his lore is tbh for me the most saddest backstory I have ever read in genshin and no one can prove me wrong just imagine being forced to devour peoples life, not being fed and having to eat snow to survive, the people who u have killed/karmic dept haunting you for years and years suffering alone and wanting for freedom yet telling yourself you don't deserve it. wanting to get help but too scared to even be talk to someone thinking you're gonna hurt them always living in fear and suffering for years to come- that's just straight up sad

@@beepbeep902 I’m not rlly sure but I think because the other yakshas were also under the command of that evil god and remember his old name while still getting their new names from Morax. it’s also revealed in the new archon quest by Xiao himself. Also the other yakshas don’t call him Alatus anymore, it’s just that Bosasius could not remember his most recent memories and referred Xiao as Alatus as if he was still serving under that god.

People usually says that eula history is one of the saddest because she wasnt accepted, or ganyu because of the same and because she doesn't have enough sleep with work,in my opinion if this is not the saddest story of genshin because all of the suffer that we all know xiao has and has going through, its in the top 3, i have never cried with an arcont quest except of the yashkas one.... all the suffer the yashkas gone through its not descriptable

Wow.. i cant believe I haven’t seen this before!??! This deserves millions of views. The time and effort it would’ve taken to make this masterpiece. The art is gorgeous, visuals are beautifully timed with the music. And the music is perfection, i am adding this to my playlist now lol. Emo is a style/music subculture.
Xiao neither of these. He’s not trying to be cool or make others uncomfortable. His speech can be rather harsh, blunt and/or disturbing, but he’s not doing it to make himself seem a certain way. He is simply saying the truth but lacks the social graces to be aware of the discomfort he may cause with them. He’s simply not used to speaking to others and comes from a time that talking about such things was probably common. And he’s not emo because he probably doesn’t even know what the hell that is. You could get away with Emo if you were writing a modern AU and Xiao was into that but that’s it. And neither is Xiao a teen.
As someone with social issues and trauma, it sucks to hear characters you relate two or share similar issues with you, be reduced to edgy/emo for having those issues or having those issues affect how that act and speak in present time.
Not trying to hate, but I promise you those are eng dub players. EN xiao is a completely different character than the other 3 languages.
If anyone has ever had almond tofu before, you'd realize how *young* and innocent Xiao actually is, despite the 2000+ years he's technically been alive. Almond tofu is a dessert that's actually made with jelly and a candy-like almond syrup. (The name "tofu" simply comes from the fact that the jelly looks soft and bright like tofu.) Many versions of the dish visually look colorful and bright, and the taste is sweet and refreshing. It's a very simple and homely dessert. And most importantly, it isn't considered a luxurious or rare dish, but rather just a very normal and simple snack in Chinese culture. For me, I associate almond tofu with childhood because it was the kind of snack that elementary school me would sometimes look forward to after an afternoon of playing out in the sun.
And it makes me realize that fighting, war, and death are really the only things he's known in all 2000+ years of his life. There's something sort of sad in the fact that of all the possible amazing foods he could have liked, the one that caught his attention is a common, simple dessert snack that any kid in Liyue would have tasted before. And any kid in Liyue could probably have almond tofu *whenever they wanted*, and yet to Xiao... it's the first sign of hope and light he has ever experienced. He considers what others easily pass by without noticing as something rare and worth cherishing, and that's clearly the result of being raised around constant bloodshed and war. And it's a really sad reminder that he would have had a normal, innocent life if it hadn't been for the war. He would've had light and hope and the childlike demeanor he seems to possess deep down. For Xiao, who has spent eons fighting and fighting instead of living, this simple and sweet dish reminds him of everything he doesn't have (and everything he longs for, though he won't admit it to anyone, including himself).
Thank you. Now I shall go and cry in the corner about his tragic past. I feel like the fact that he takes on the form of a teenager also just hints at possible childishness and innocence that he may have once had or may have wished for during his lifetime. Growing up as a Yaksha surrounded by war and bloodshed would have stamped out any childlike innocence he may have had but it feels like a part of him yearns for it still, holding onto small things like normal desserts and the form of a boy rather than a man.

If I remember canon correctly, he likes it specifically because it tastes similar to the dreams he used to eat back when he was prisoner to another god before Morax freed him, hence why his special version of the dish is called "Sweet Dream"

Even though Venti is the reason why i came to Genshin Impact, Xiao is the one i ended up loving. I remembered first encountering Xiao at Wangshu Inn, i wasn’t really interested of him, but it was nice meeting a new character again.
Yes, i wasn’t really interested of him until 1.3 version arrives. When i tested him in his test run and saw his banner, i thought he’s very cool and powerful so i decided to pull for him. His story quest and times of Xiao’s cutscenes in the Lantern Rite, i’m starting to like him more, like we’re getting to know Xiao from there.
It saddens me a little that his first banner has come to an end without me getting him. Somewhere in March, I remember scrolling through Tiktok then i came across a video about Xiao’s past where he was enslave by an evil god and eats snow. I feel so bad for this man.
It came to the point i digged more deeper through Xiao’s lores. From reading his character story, Matsuoka’s interview, fan animations. It had all me burst into tears. I had no idea Xiao has suffered so much.
Like after discovering his past, i needed his rerun so bad. I even skipped Inazuma characters (Except Kazuha and Itto but sadly i didn’t get Kazuha) for Xiao. And now here i am maining this yaksha boi, i really enjoy playing Xiao so much. Even though i have few 5* star characters before Xiao, Xiao is actually the first character i crowned, make that tripled crown.

Xiao is that character that is too kind...so kind that to protect others he choose to be cruel, be it to himself and to those who tries to get close. I noticed this the first time he told the Traveler to stay away, not because he doesn't like them but because he doesn't want to hurt them with his presence. His choice of isolating himself from society is also because of this absolute kindness.

Xiao holds such a fucking special place in my heart. Back in October of 2021, my dad was in a horrible horrible space with his physical health, and I came across this one video of a xiao edit with the song earth boy playing in the back
Those days I was already stressed with work, uni applications, future in general, my dads health, and was mostly out of this world, out of touch with reality, always daydreaming and breaking apart. I resonate with xiao so much.. I love his story so much.. he’s such an emotional support for me.

I love how the purple yaksha’s mask is separate from the others because of how he turned on them all. But xiao still repects him as a former ally and remembers him and so he keeps him there.
I love Xiao so much and this might seem stupid, but even though he’s fictional, he has so much going on and I can relate to him being scared of getting close to others.. he’s scared he’ll hurt them, I am too. I’ve always wanted to make more friends and stuff but after all that’s happened, I’m always cautious about it. And I overreact over so many things. Sometimes my friends joke and stuff and it makes me mad. I feel so bad and I wish Xiao was real, I would try to be his best friend he’s ever had.
I'm so glad that traveler was able to lighten up a new path for xiao, even if it may be a small one. When we first encountered him, I thought of him as a regular character but now he's my favorite overall and my main. he deserves the world.

@@beepbeep902 I’m not rlly sure but I think because the other yakshas were also under the command of that evil god and remember his old name while still getting their new names from Morax. it’s also revealed in the new archon quest by Xiao himself. Also the other yakshas don’t call him Alatus anymore, it’s just that Bosasius could not remember his most recent memories and referred Xiao as Alatus as if he was still serving under that god.

Also how you took Xiao‘s first version with more reddish colors and combined it with his past „full of blood“ and despair is absolutely incredible. Wow.. i cant believe I haven’t seen this before!??! This deserves millions of views. The time and effort it would’ve taken to make this masterpiece. The art is gorgeous, visuals are beautifully timed with the music. And the music is perfection, i am adding this to my playlist now lol.
