The fact that Xiao will continue his duty as the last Yaksha until so far off in the future (aka modern Liyue) is kind of depressing. Though, at least he seems to have a semblance of a normal life, so I guess that's a positive aspect.
But he probably won't stop until either Morax/Rex Lapis/Zhongli tells him to (maybe not even then) or if he is finally consumed by his accumulated karmic debt.

i dont understand the lyrics so my interpretations based on the art is that xiao is still defending liyue as it progresses to a new and modern era. still defending the land behind the scenes with no recognition

Hi! I bring some translations to help clarify the lyrics to this beautiful song. 💗
First let me note that the following translation was done by my dad but even so, my family is more fluent in the Cantonese dialect. This song is in the Mandarin dialect and some Chinese characters are simplified (my dad grew up learning traditional, not simplified Chinese characters). On top of that, the lyrics are written in calligraphy so some Chinese characters are hard to read. Please note my dad is in his 50s and has some eye problems so he couldn't read some Chinese words or wasn't sure how to translate them into English. This song is pretty much a poetic song, so of course some things are rhetorical or are meant to be allusions as well. I do love how some people, based on the art, was saying it's related to Xiao protecting Liyue throughout the years even until it evolved and revolutionized! But the lyrics show some of that pain and gloom he endures as well. Xiao's not emo or edgy. He truly leads a very admirable, selfless, and painful existence. Let's appreciate him

This is absolutely stunning. The more time flies bye and liyue transforms into a modern city, Xiao continues to strive and protect it from the bottom of his heart. He continues his duty. This is such an amazing piece and deserve a lot of credit.

The dim light fades on the surface, keeping the contract that lasts for an eternity
Actually, the Song of the People of Yue is a poem, the “The mountains have their trees and the trees have their branches” is half of the last sentence of this poem. The full last sentence actually means “The mountains have their trees and the trees have their branches, I love you but you never knew”. Yes, it is a love poem.
I believe it is intended to represent Xiao’s hope of being able to understand and fit into the world of mortals, but he knows that he never will (cuz his karmic debt and traumas etc.)
I said the ‘People of Yue” is because “Yue” in here is actually a region in China in the past. The Song of the People of Yue would be better translated as the Song by a Person from Yue, but I chose the People of Yue because I thought it’ll be more fitting since I’d like to have a thin barrier of some sort to separate the world of Genshin from ours.
In this case I would like to assume that it was sang by the People of Liyue, one to honour and understand one of their most important protectors, two Liyue in mandarin is Li Yue, the Yue is the some spelling and pronunciation with the Yue in here (but not the same in writing), so I just thought that it fits
If any of you are wondering, the poem of the Song of Yue (Song by the Person from Yue) means a girl having a crush on a prince, the girl was just a commoner who sails on a boat on a river, she had the luck of sailing with the prince, the prince had not looked down on her because of her status, so the girl had a crush on him, but she knows her dreams will not come true because of their differences.
Again I am not a professional translator so I can’t guarantee you that it is exactly what it means but I tried my best
