It’s most definitely an adventure with Austin . First time I seen you was with SRC and you doing a road trip to grab a motor for them in that little wagon …. I’m not even sure how long ago that was anymore 😂
Ohhhh that trip will live on in memory for sure. Columbus to Fargo and back battling a winter storm and snow in no time at all. Especially given that motor ended up being junk. Ugh! But hey, it's an adventure! This one ended up being a lot more adventure than I was hoping it would be!
Last summer, Colorado had I25 shut down south of Colorado Springs because of a train derailment that landed on the interstate ( overhead train tracks ). They had all traffic routing down a back world dirt road that went on for an hour. Could not see anything because of the massive dirt cloud all the cars were stirring up.
I love my Dodge (I refuse to call them RAM's) trucks. Currently own my third one, a 2020 1500 Big Horn four wheel drive with the Hemi. My milage is about the same as you were getting and I was towing a full race car trailer and the bed was loaded with spares and equipment. Milage is a bit different in West Virginia as you might guess. I too do not like the the knob shifter but I like the dash. The real test with a tow rig is climbing the seven miles up Fancy Gap mountain on I-77 in Virginia. My rig will hold 70 MPH with easy all the way up, no problem.
It amazes me how far the fuel injection (and likely more the transmission) has come since our 2003 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty 4x4 with singles. It was the first one AutoWest Dodge of Rocklin ever sold with the hemi (first hemi Ram period or we would've bought the 1500 had they had it) and it has only ever gotten 12.5mpg at the absolute best when it had regular street tires on it. With 315 BFG K02's it dropped to 11.3 and has continued to drop since. Now 21 years old with 86k miles it doesn't even get 10mpg anymore. Pulling a 19 ft 80's-90's aluminum boat with an outboard it dropped down into the high single digits. Towing a Uhaul with a 71 FJ40 on it from Rogue River Oregon to Wheatland California it got about 8.5mpg. (still better than my 76 F100 with a 360, 2brl, smog crap and a NP435 would've done.. I couldn't have made it gas station to gas station with that thing, let alone towing.. 11mpg was the best I ever saw out of it. I miss that truck though. Now because of the popularity of Crown Vic chassis swaps absolute garbage 60's-70's F series trucks are $6k anymore.) I will say, you can but a new Ram with a regular shifter, you just have to pay for the Rebel package.. a DJ I've been friends with for a couple decades went through that hassel a year or two ago when he bought a new truck.. I know you're done with it, but.. I wonder what costs would have been to.. 1. Do what you did vs. 2. Get a small uhaul 1 way to tow the trailer with Or 3. Put your car on the trailer, tow it to desmoine, drop the trailer off at uhaul and the truck at enterprise, then drive your car home. The math will be interesting. Can't wait to see it.
@RustyZipper according to uhaul's website, if I pick up a 10' truck in des moine tomorrow and drop it off in Columbus, I get 4 days of use and anything over 770 miles is $1.10 per mile. That's $1300 plus the fuel and extra mileage to rent the truck and the trailer. I don't know what it coat to rent the enterprise pickup truck, but also you have to then figure the fuel and your time back to des moine and then the plane ride back to Columbus. I bet that wasn't free.
@@Dumbass_mechanic - I bet it was about the same. I know U-haul trailers are around $65 a day round trip, an Enterprise truck was around $200 a day, round trip. I’ll be honest when I say I have absolutely no idea what Austin was trying to accomplish by making multiple trips there and back, flying and then returning the truck, etc. It made my head heart just thinking about it. As for me, I’d simply found the nearest Enterprise truck rental in Columbus, the nearest U-Haul trailer in Columbus then set sail for Des Moins. Make everything a round trip, leaving a beater car at Enterprise. And maybe he did this but again, I couldn’t follow his logic here. No offense to anyone.
