    Man I thank you for this video. Like you I used the internal compass, because, nobody said not a thing on the external compass on TH-cam. I didn't know if you could get back into Mission Planner and do this or not. I thank you again.

    Thank You! I haven't tried it yet, but after having some compass issues with the apm, I will definitely try that, connect the compass to the port below GPS, remove the jumper, select it in mission planner and re-calibrate it!

    Thank you for this, you have just confirmed how i thought it should be. I am just putting together my first APM 2.8 in a quad, done a lot of reading about having to hook the compass into the I2C port. But when i looked carefully at the pcb i noticed that the port under the GPS port was marked 'Ext Mag'. So i was wondering if that is where it now went. You just confirmed it for me. Thanks, great video.

      No problem, enjoy the 2.8, it's a fantastic flight controller. I will never deviate from the 3dr products, their excellent, I hope I can upgrade to the pixhawl some day but it's hard for me to leave the APM as I have a few hundred flights with ZERO issues on my main quad so why change, the only thing I like that the pixhawk has is auto parachute deployment but the APM doesn't have the processing power for that 😔.     Thank you I spent most of the day trying to get the thing to work.then I stumbled onto your video plug in were you said .it works now.
    Just one question do you still have to set roll 180 as I did .when I put it into lioiter it drifts off?

    Hey, Had a questions. during alt hold mode and loiter mode I cannot take off. In stabilize mode it takes off but in loiter and alt hold the props spin slowly but not create any lift even at 100% throttle in stabilize it flies OK.

    thx for your great video,i have some question for this board,if im not using power module how to powering the board?i leave jp1 connected or must be removed from board?.and how about magnetometer jumper?its necessary used if im powering the board without power module?.or i must use external gps module like m8n?

      You could use becs from your escs or do what I do and use a 5v bec from my pdb onto the output pins. If you do this leave the jp1 jumper on but make sure you don’t draw to many amps / volts from other components.

      GPS is part of system check apm goes through every time you power it up , it will not let you arm the motors unless it has a good gps lock.

    Would you post what firmware, and software versions that you used. links would be great. I am trying to setup mine, and having a horrible time getting correct info. drivers, which flight planner to use. THX

      firmware version of board is 3.2.1 I believe. that's the highest version available for the 2.8 board. the pixhawx will take higher software versions but it's 250$ but is nice because it has redundant gps ports, automatic parachute deployment and many other features. I use mission planner to configure. great peice of software. mission planner comes with the drivers you need to connect to the board. make sure if you can't connect you try multiple usb cords.

    hello sir , I need your help with my apm 2.8 . When i give throttle , not all the motors start at the same time . But when i tilt it in different direction different motors start randomely. Dont know what to do?

      You need to calibrate your speed controllers. Sorry for the late response, make sure you always do this without the props on. Look for videos on calibrating with the app, once calibrated they will all start at the same time. Your speed controllers basically don't know where "zero" is in relation to your control loop from your receiver.

    how come your compass only has 2 wires. Shouldn't it have SDA, SCL, vcc, gnd?
    Are those SDA and SCL wires and the compass takes the vcc and gnd from the gps, right?

      It’s a combination compass and gps. That’s how it comes. Worked fine

      Im gonna say (it was a while ago and I now use a pixhawk) 2 are data lines and two are power. Because it’s a combo power is jumped inside from gps, hence why the compass only had the data line.

    MIne isn't recognizing the external compass. I have another 2.8 that works perfectly. I think there are pad that need to be bridged on the underside of the board. Simply removing the pin doesn't work on some of them.

    Could you please help me Gino? I tried to removed this jumper and i am unable to arming the quadcopter because bad compass health (of course every time i tried something new variation of the jumpers reflash the apm and make the all calibration process again), also i tried with jumper on the upper position, bad impossible use the external compass which is a m8n. The only result was when i tried with the 12c port and make the bridge 2 pads underneath the port- in this case the board was detected the external compass, i could calibrate, but can not switch off the internal and always have bad compass health message and impossible arming. I tried every variations, seriously, i am really tired all of this...

      In the intial setup do you have the compass selected as external 180 rotational roll?

      Yes i tried with roll 180 and i tried with 'none' also. What is interesting the calibration i can do with the external compass, i know it because i removed the external compass from the stand, and during the calibration I only move the GPS unit itself and the APM not moving, when the calibration done I go to the Hud screen and when i rotate the ONLY the gps unit to find North does not happening, BUT when i rotate the APM unit th compass moving on the screen, looks like the external unit is calibrated, i have selected the external compass by hardware (jumper position uppper) and also in the software (mission planner external compass option 1 and 2) but still using the internal. During the flights if I use internal compass in GPS assisted modes i lost the control of the quadcopter if i had wind because of the toilet bowling effect, internal compass does not work well

    hm - i can hoover my drone - its stable but when i try to correct the direction it randomly flys in any direction lol - escs & compass 10 times calibrated and workin good.
    if i try to correct the rates - its more or less stable at hoovering but whatever i change it still flys randomly when i try to steer :/

      Bergwacht compass won't have anything to do with it unless your in a mode that uses GPS...make sure the frame type is correct in mission planner. If your just trying to fly and steer even in loiter the compass doesn't effect that.

      Also....go into the receiver tab and make sure all your rc channels are working the correct direction

      i try only the stabilize mode until its steerable - i think my gps isnt needed with that mode.
      iam sure the frame type is choosed correctly. have it set several times like learn up escs & calibrating the compass.
      Engine running direction and props installed correctly otherwise it wont hover i think.

      You aren't by any chance in headless mode are you? Plug into mission planner and arm the quad (WITH PROPS OFF) and make sure when you arm it says stabilize.

      Ammar Khalil are you sure you have external compass selected in mission planner? What gps are you using? Are you sure you have a combo GPS and compass? Most of them do

      Gino Palumbo I'm using amp 2.8 with Ublox 7M Gps plus compass. Yes i've seleted externally mounted compass in MP before live calibration. I can't figured it out yet.

    nice video ..first of all my English is poor but i want to explain my 7 days Experience with you all about APM 2.8 . i also bought this Control board with External compass . i also face the same problem .
    when you remove the jumper and disconnect the internal compass but external compass not working perfectly because the 2nd 2 wire connection is using for old compass .. you should connect compass into 12C near Power module Connection and open the AMP casing and continue the SCL and SDA connection to 12C through Soldering because this poart is multi function .. then External Compass will work perfectly . may be i am wrong but my AMP2.8 now working perfectly .. i am searching more now..
