  • Want to learn how to skate, but think you are too old to start? I am here to share with you that if you have the passion, work ethic, and grit that you CAN become a figure skater. IT"S NEVER TOO LATE TO START SKATING!
In this video I discuss the success stories of skaters who I have witnessed and worked with who have been able to achieve their goals in skating despite the limited stereotype of having to start at the age of 5/6 years old to become a skater.
    OFF-TRAINING TUTORIALS:
Skate with Michelle: • SKATE WITH MICHELLE!
Stretch with Michelle: • STRETCH WITH MICHELLE!
Let me know if you have any more questions about skating and I will try to answer them in a future video.
    Skating Love,

I progressed really quickly (made it to UK Skate Star Silver level in 7months) but then COVID hit and the rink has been closed 9 out of the last 12 months. I competed for the first time at 48 and have done a competition or two every year since. I began skating at age 14 after giving up gymnastics due to my height. I got all the way up to axels and double salchows before I messed up my knee and needed surgery. I skated off and on in my 20’s before deciding to make one last charge to get my axel back by my 30th birthday. I did it! And then I stopped skating for the next 8 years. At 38 and with a 3 year old daughter now old enough to skate, I made my way back to the rink. I could barely skate forward out of wobbliness when I first got back on the ice and I was very out of shape. I wasn’t really sure where I would go with it. But fast forward six months, I’ve lost 15 pounds, I have all my single jumps back, they feel stronger and higher than I ever remember, and I’m actually thinking about an axel again. I am totally in love with the sport again! All I can think about is getting back to the rink. I have found a coach and have decided to start testing again on the adult testing track. I’m excited to see how far I can go! And yes, my daughter is loving it too! She tells me she loves skating with mommy and I absolutely love skating with her! 😍🤩⛸⛸

I have so much fun on the ice, but I get so insecure the second all these kids rush by me and start zooming across the ice, jumping and twirling, watched under their mom's hawkeyes. I don't necessarily want to compete, I just want the skills and master many of the movements. I miss working on choreos (I was a competitive equestrian vaulter age 5 - 21), I miss the physical movements of artistic expression and just having a bit more of a purpose other than Mom. I am having so much fun and the trainer is nothing short of amazing and supportive. But the insecurity creeps up faster than anything!

When you mentioned your sister starting kind of late then passing levels fast, it made me really happy ☺ the people at my rink say I'm very bright as well. I learned to skate when I was 10, 2 years ago, but my progression since then has been wonderful! ( I think I might have a good chance of going to the Olympics ) I go to the ice rink 2-3 times a week, and do lots of off ice training, which really helps!😂😂😂

The most important thing in skating is heart, heart and love for the sport. Today I went back to ice for the first time after 30 years. I didn't listen to the coach and skating to fast so ended in a painful fall. I got up, waited a few minutes, and went back to the ice :)

I am 18 years old. When I was around eight-nine, every winter at least twice per week I used to go to an ice rink that the government built for the Christmas holidays.
I remember having a lot of fun there, but suddenly one year they decided to not put the ice rink. I knew about another around 30mn from my home, but I never get the chance to get there until this past Christmas.
A friend, who is a professional skater (Velocity), asked me to go with her to the ice rink, I detinetely said "yes".
After more than six years without ice skating, I felt incredible free when I got into the place. I almost busted into tears, since I missed it a lot.
Now I am thinking about taking some lessons in September, when the ice skating school opens again.
Ice skating has always been my "lost sport", I hope I can change that! With some luck I am able to combine horse riding with ice skating as I have always dreamed.

I started about 2 and a half years ago, and I'll be 50 next year. I was not a kid skater (except playing in winter on frozen ponds!), and found the rink by accident. I passed Gold moves this year and am working on Intermediate. I had NO idea about local rinks, or that adults could have lessons (or that coaches would even WANT to work with me). I didn't know about spins, jumps, lefties/righties, inside edges/outside edges (super confusing when I started 3-turns haha).....nada. I think it's great you covered adult ages; I thought it was only going to be about the kids' system (and I didn't know about their age restrictions and pressures, either). Great video with inspiring students!

Hi, I'm 67 years old, I came back to ice skating in november of 2021, after a 37 year break (back then it was just recreational, noodling around in hockey skates). I had skateboarding and waterskiing experience prior. Bought my very first pair of good figure skates in march of 2022, and here I am 15 months later, and I can do all the fwd 3 turns, a waltz jump, fwd crossovers, and I'm having a screaming blast! I've met a great group of new friends, I skate 3 times a week, and in fact am heading to the rink in another 15 minutes! You are never to old to try new things. I will never test or compete, and don't care. I am having such a good time, I love the movement and fine motor control.

I just had my first figure skating lesson at age 52. The difference between me & other skaters my age is that I want the exact same opportunities as if I started skating at age 4. I hate that the Olympians are all teenagers. I want to progress to Olympic level over the next 20+ years and get MY Olympic chance, just like the skaters who started at 4. I didn't skate as a kid because I have always been very stiff, no flexibility or natural athletic ability, and I was always the tallest kid. Top skaters are all short and flexible. I plan to develop the flexibility and show that taller skaters can do the same jumps.Even iIf it takes me 20 years of practice to achieve it, I want to be winning competitions with a quad axel, just like the 15-year-olds today. Of course, skating when you have adult responsibilities and a full-time job is much more difficult than the kids who have unlimited time and money, which isn't fair.

Nice video. And nice comment I am inline male adult figure skater andstarted 6 years ago and at the same time I am kali stick fighter. I recommend figure skating as the complement for martial arts everything is there footwork, balance, cardio, coordination when I was 29. In fact , I had a tendinitis so I was unable to run but I always did skate since my 20ties but never figure skated. Weirdly skating was the only sport did not make me feel the pain on my hamstring comparing with running .so I build my cardio through figure skating and I am starting doing my double axel now , my first double jump came up three years ago .

I started skating (group lessons) around 2005, 46 y/o. male skater. Got to where I could get around the ice and feel very comfortable forward skating.
Took some time off due to work schedule, then in 2010, 51 y/o. Took private lessons and inside of 6 months did my first ISI beta level competition.
Skated for all of 2010 and work schedule again, did not get back on the ice until last month - 2023 at 64 y/o. I'm retired now.

I started 2 1/2 years ago at 58 working my way through the Learn to Skate USA "adult" progression.. Currently 60 and currently at "Adult 6". When I finish that, I plan to go on with "pre-free skate" and "free skate" as much as far as my body will take me.
I had planned on my first competition earlier this year--a "Learn to Skate" centered one with an "Adult 5" routine--but a concussion from a minor auto accident (I'm OK now) prevented me from entering that one. Still, there will be others and I plan to be out there.

Now, at the age of 38, I'm coming back with a desire to learn much more in the future. I want to be able to teach my children as well. They have a few skating lessons with their schoolclass every year. That's why I came back and found out, how much joy it brings me now. I think, one big advance of adult skaters is a different mindset. You know, that you have time, you are more patient and you understand technical aspects of how your body should work, how this or that move should look like and should be done... This is way better when you are ani older, adult, skater. Thumbs up for all of us 👍

I learned to skate forwards (and only that, mind you) at age 12, in my aun'ts hand-me-down skates that were probably thrice my age. I didn't reconnect with the sport until I was 29, and started attending group sessions at 30. Aside from improved physical fitness, great sense of balance and muscle gain, skating has taught me patience, humility, discipline and that everyone makes progress at their own pace and in their own time. I don't really plan on competing anytime soon but that rush of dopamine when you get a step sequence or a jump just right? Few things compare to that

I hadn't skated for about twenty years. Decided to go back at 57. Before I was very comfortable going forwards and could go backwards but not super great. Just could go it well enough. That was it. Then in March (8 month ago) went back. Basically starting over but not totally. I still remember to a degree how to maneuver my feet to get around. It was kind of a struggle the first five months, but going three times a week really paid off. I figured out one foot plow stops. Basic forward crossover going counterclockwise, now atempting it the other direction. Got the one foot glide down fairly well. And improved my feel for going backwards. I've decided to get my own skates (rentals are rather unreliable though I found a pair they have that works well for me for the time being, that I get there early so as to make sure they aren't taken). Anyway. All that to say you can start later in life, it's totally doable barring any major health issues. Just don't expect to get results from going just a few times. Keep going. At times I did feel like it wasn't going to come (feeling fully comfortable on skates again) but my persistence paid off. I have no aspirations to do jumps or spins. Just do basics like transitions, crossovers, etc. If you have decent time to practice each week, get your own skates, and even take lessons, I say go for it. Nice way to just do something physical and clear your mind. And I'm even kind of a wuss. Doing new things makes me nervous, but with practice I get past it. Again just don't expect to be super at ease until you get some hours under your belt.

im 15 and i always feel bad because i discontinued skating when i was little (3-7) and then started up this year. its really freeing and comforting to be on ice. i really wish to be good enough but i really just enjoy the ice as well. this video is really nice, thanks!

i’m in college and i’ve avoided going ice skating for the last 10 years because i was afraid i’d be sad that i couldn’t do it anymore and i’d want to do it again, i did figure skating between the ages of 4 and 11. i ultimately quit because i didn’t want to compete, i HATED the snobby girls in it and didn’t like the pressure. for the last year i just did private lessons and really enjoyed it, but felt like i couldn’t go anywhere so i quit. my boyfriend finally convinced me to go with him about a month ago and i caved and bought myself some new decent quality skates and i’m determined to just have fun and not worry about what other people think and not have to worry about being competitive. i think i do want to try synchro, though, and my local rink has an adult class. once i’m not a broke student anymore i’m going to try it. thanks for the final encouragement that i can do it and should just have fun with it.

I just turned 30 and my dream as a child was to be a figure skater. Im currently looking into classes and go for it, even if just for a hobby

Started in my late 60s and now 75. Managing basic jumps etc but still struggling with spins. As balance (and everything else!!) deteriorates with age, is spinning likely to be one of the more difficult elements to master at my age? (Whatever the answer I will not give up!)

I'm 36, started learning to skate thinking I was going to play hockey....but I've slowly fallen in love with figure skating and am going to start pursuing that instead of playing hockey! I don't feel old (yet)and if I can handle skateboarding at my age, still, I got this. lol

This is really cool! I don’t think my main passions lie in skating, but I’d love some lessons. The few times I’ve skated have felt scary, but so freeing and fun. Unfortunately the only Olympic sized skating rink in my country shut down a few months ago. There’s still another one but it’s smaller. I hope all the skaters that used the old rink are still able to pursue their passions. Kinda sucks but that’s just how it is living in the tropics ig. Here’s to hoping they open a new rink at some point!

Omg! same here. I'm also 13 and I'm really eager to start practicing. I suggest to focus on your flexibility, strength, musicality, mental health or anything you can do off-ice. Or maybe purchasing inline skates or roller skates. We can do this!! < 3
