  • In this video you will see how to remove the gear box or the lower section of a Mercury outboard. You will also see how to do a complete water pump replacement.
    You can find new parts on pretty much any outboard at Crowley marine.com

    Thank you for this post! I will be doing this for the first time on a 40 hp Mercury and found your video easy to follow, very detailed, and loaded with good tips like the shift linkage disconnect procedure.
    The only other trick I might try before taking the pump housing off is putting a scribe mark between the top surface of the pump housing and the shaft to help make sure the splines are lined up with the flywheel when the lower unit is being put back on.

    On all the videos I have watched concerning water pump replacement, no one mentions the wrenches or sockets they using. Otherwise great video, Thanks

    Excellent video, very clear views of all. One of the best of many I have seen. Just did my 2003 40 HP Mercury two stroke, but have a problem with the shifting. Don't know why.

      The adjusting is very sensitive.. make sure to put tha gear box in neutral and your shifter on neutral position bwfore screwing the connecting nut

      In neutral. You will have to adjuste the shifter link after re installation

    Why do you have to remove prop in order to remove lower unit 😳

    • @RickStuff
      @RickStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is essier to remove the 5ft bolt with ghe prop off

    • @jamesmatthes7415
      @jamesmatthes7415 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very difficult to put the 5th nut back on due to it being way up in the cavity and prop blades are in the way. Not required, just makes reassembly a little easier. Personal preference.

    • @RickStuff

      Yes but it dosen't mather. You will have to adjust the shifter linkage anyway after the job

      @@RickStuff I think mine is in reverse when I re installed the lower end the prop is only turning clockwise by hand not both ways that would indicate it is in neutral.
      With the lower end off can I physically pull and push the shift linkage by hand to get the gear in neutral before re installing

    • @RickStuff

      @@GraemeJones1979 make sure that when you connect the shifter rod , the throttle and the transmossion are in same osition. Ex; the atick ahift in foward poaition and the transmission (lower end) in foward position. If they are not in sync you won't be able ro pit it in neutral and adjuste the neutral postion...

    • @RickStuff
      @RickStuff  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vidar-4020 after investigation I've figured that ut was not necessary to replace my water pump. The exit pip was clung probably from spiders. There was still a poor water with the nrw pump. I fix it by unpluging the hose from engine side and blowing compressed air to push the dirt out...
