The police Captain was OPA the entire time, so when she was ordered by her Earther corporate bosses to find Julie Mao she already knew that Julie was working with Dawes. She still had to follow her corporate orders so she gave the case to a burnt out, bribe taking has-been who she knew would put in minimal effort and then give up and collect his bonus - Miller. The only problem was that Miller got too invested in the case, wouldn't drop it and found out too much.
One of the few things that I think that Leviathan Wakes did better than the show is that it made this pretty clear and the emotional impact of Miller realising that he's the station joke hit harder
I've watched the series at least 10 times fully through, and read all 9 books 3 times. This comment was the first time understood deeper than "She was working with Dawes the whole time", but I never realized that she gave the case to Miller because she already knew where Julie was, and Miller took the case more personally, and put the most effort he ever did before. Which makes me realize Havelock had a small part in his change to doing more, and digger even deeper as well, cause I don't think he would have gotten all the info and clues he did if he never had the conversation with Dawes about the guy who stuck a spike through Havelock, which was a part of the whole catalyst that made Miller dig as deep as he possibly could.
Here is some interesting trivia. The Rocinante is 5 stories tall. They use a 5 story tall building, and built the entire inside of the Rocinante in that building. So they could go from the bridge all the way down to the docking/cargo bay. I thought that was very awesome for a show to go to those lengths. There may be separate sets for certain zero G scenes, but the whole inside as built out in that building.
In episode 4 the captain of the donnager told one of her bridge officers to get detailed imagery and drive signatures of the ships that were attacking them. Later that same bridge officer gave her a chip which she in turn gave to Lopez and told him to get it and Holden off the ship.
My point about Fred Johnson was, if someone called him 'the butcher' it was probably politicians, and most likely, the politicians who made him 'the butcher'. That's how soldiering works, ask Gen. Smedley Butler. Butler, not butcher, the Butcher of Panama!
The kid who is thrown out by his uncle is the one Miller catched messing with the water supplies. His uncle done this to give im a chance to survive. The space suit has its rescue beacon activated. So if a ship pass nearby, it could come to catch him up
One thing they don't get across as well in the show as in the books is how many spaceships are moving about in the inner solar system, especially in the major traffic lanes. Uncle Mateo throwing Diogo out like that was more like throwing somebody out your car at the curb of the freeway. Someone else is bound to come along shortly, so it is in no way a death sentence.
33:27 The books are written by two guys, one is George R.R. Martin's assistant and the other one has adapted several of Martin's works into graphic novels, and they are also part of the show's writing team, so yeah hehehe
You may know this already, but the original concept for The Expanse was for an MMPRPG, but Ty and Daniel realized that it was unfeasible at that time both financially and logistically. So they turned it into a tabletop RPG. After playing that for a while (with George R.R. Martin joining them in play), they had a good story started, so they turned that into the novel series. That was so good it was turned into the show, which was so good Telltale Games just released it as an MMPRPG.... and the circle was completed. Rumor has it George's character was Shed, which would make sense. George was too busy not finishing Winds Of Winter.

Did you recognize the nephew that was left floating in space? He was the kid that Miller busted for stealing water on Ceres and let go in episode 2, his name is Diogo.
Amos was startled that Naomi was afraid of him, even though he would die or kill at her word. Bit by bit, you learn something new about Amos' character. Be careful not to overlook the "texture" of the story. For instance, the way the Martians were rousting the Belter ice miner is an important point of understanding how Belters have typically been treated, and it fills in why they may do and think about the Inner planets. You didn't notice that the nephew tossed into space was the same kid that Miller rousted for stealing water. There are no "random stories" in this show, and very little distraction. Everything is important and will come back around. I'm not sure the captain fired Miller because of Dawes. She's probably on his payroll, but Dawes is also interested in finding out where Julie is. I think she was acting under much larger money...probably the same source that had them searching for Julie in the first place. Fred Johnson, as a former soldier, is aware that military armor carry combat recorders, so he knew there would be a memory chip on Lopez' armor. That would be the chip of the Donagger battle and the information on the attacking ships that Captain Yao gave him.

One possible explanation of the title Rock Bottom is that until now Holden and the crew have just been reacting to events and trying to survive but at the end of the episode they are choosing to leave on a mission of their own. Instead of passively reacting they are actively exerting control over their path.
This show is very efficient with its storytelling. Stuff that seems unrelated at one point can come back around later and make you go, "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!"
I love that they are always trying to guess the story but a great thing this show does, is that you never know what will happen in The Expanse, and that´s why I love it so much! :)

indeed; and some of those conditions may be more common amongst Belters; tumors are likely more common because Belters are probably exposed to more radiation than is healthy; infections probably spread like crazy because of the cramped and often dirty conditions that many Belters live in and the fact that they use recycled air (just look at how quickly Covid-19 spread between people on cruise-ships), plus blood clots are probably more common as well because of circulation problems resulting from living in low or zero g. Dawes should really have gone to the doctor about the blood in his tears...
"[Things are] starting to come together but also fall apart." Hahaha! This could be the logline of just about every episode of The Expanse. Nicely done.
Also, Steven, your theories about "what's going on" are right except the parts where they're wrong. And, you're close but you're also very far. And I'm not bullshitting you. I just can't tell you which parts are right and which parts are wrong. But it's so delicious to watch your mind try to unravel the Gordian Knot of the secrets behind everything, just like we all did. The Belt is a vast area, the Asteroid Belt circles the entire Solar System, Ceres is the capital, but there are mining bases throughout the belt. Mining vast quantities of minerals.
What you appear to have missed is that Diogo's uncle threw a net-load of dumb missiles (rocks) at the Scipio Africanus. Missiles that are not going to be easily destroyed by her Point Defense Cannons.
I'm sad it didn't end up in the show but in the books, Miller decides to stop drinking and get his life together, just before he's fired. That's the "rock bottom" if the ep title and Daws's speach

Saw this in my notifications and was like holy shit is that Thomas Jane. Which is a big reason why I think I'm going to have to watch the series. I mean I probably should watch it just for the reason that so many people say it's amazing. But it's hard to find time for me to start watching new things at least it was until COVID19 started and I'm stuck at home every single day. I really enjoy Thomas Jane as an actor so that is even more of a reason to start watching this. Also see two other actors I really enjoy that are in the series those being Burn Gorman and Jared Harris.
The character Thomas Jane brings to life is one of the best things to come out of this show. Jared Harris is as captivating as ever. And Burn Gorman's character is introduced much later on but by that time, the show will have given you plenty of more reasons to invest in it ;)
It's a line that I would expect Rick or Calvin to make during a Blind Wave reaction as they both watch wrestling. Another channel that isn't wrestling related yet you might here talk of it is Funhaus a gaming channel. As James from that channel is a huge wrestling fan. To the point where for Rooster Teeth they did a documentary of him living out one of his dreams of actually being a pro wrestler. So they booked a match for some small Cali promotion and then he was given only a week worth's of training before his match. One of the guys he trained with was John Morrison. Yet to my surprise he looked really good in the ring. To the point where if I had no clue who he was and just stumbled upon the match I would have thought that he was a pro wrestler who trained for well over and year and had been putting on matches for awhile. They also had Xavier Woods as a guest for one of their episodes and did a podcast with Joey Ryan. Still though wanting for my dream reference of some channel references my favorite wrestler Kevin Owens.
The expanse has one of the best world building i've seen. I had to buy the books after watching this show, i've only read the first 2 books so far but they are great.

How's your batting average so far? This show is one of the hardest to predict. It's like life, more complex than you think. I really like all their names. They're just normal names, old fashioned even.
Being spaced with your suit is called being "left floating" or "on the float." It's potentially also a death sentence, but slower. Mateo did it to save Diogo, since he had decided to "stand up" and do something objectively crazy.
Everything you see will eventually play a role down the road. It might take while, sometime a very long while, but eventually all these little pieces will come together or turn around and raise their heads and then they will be very important. It's a good thing that Nikki makes her notes. The plot is not awfully complex. The writers are doing a good job of only exposing what is truly relevant for the current plot, but there are also bits and pieces of foreshadowing and world building towards later plot lines, and it is always rewarding when you get there and immediately make that connection to something that you have seen a season ago. Even I only noticed how much foreshadowing this episode carries towards events that are very, very far away for you at this point.
The writing/dialogue of this show is better than the dope lasers & explosions. Breaking Bad & BCS are the only other shows that I could just sit & enjoy characters have conversations
The ice and rock farmers, the uncle and his nephew? Were stopped by the equivalent of corrupt cops, and when they couldn't bribe them and wouldn't be subservient, the officers took the water they needed, AND banned them from the only route home, leaving them to starve. When the Uncle threw his Nephew out, he was trying to save his life, by giving him the air.
I actually like all that speculation, even tho it misses by a lot sometimes. This show does mystery the best, as well as a coherent story, so speculation and theories are natural for this one.
I'm curious - where abouts are you guys from? I ask because you have a bit of a Eastern Townships, Quebec feel to you but there are little things that suggest a touch of Montana in some of your stuff and I'm just curious.

Fred Johnson - the butcher . His character on the Walking dead was Tyrese John (TJ) Frederickson and his backstory was he worked in a BBQ place cutting up meat and cooking. Coincidence? Anyway I do like Steven's mind trying to find connections and figuring out the connections. Who is the Master and who is the padawon/apprentice? It has been awhile but I found Dawes's speech about his sister very powerfully acted. He was so good on Cherynobl. But I saw the Expanse first a while back and then saw Cherynbol just in January this year. But I didnt appreciate Dawe's the actor. He is so good.

Everything you see will eventually play a role down the road. It might take while, sometime a very long while, but eventually all these little pieces will come together or turn around and raise their heads and then they will be very important. It's a good thing that Nikki makes her notes. The plot is not awfully complex. The writers are doing a good job of only exposing what is truly relevant for the current plot, but there are also bits and pieces of foreshadowing and world building towards later plot lines, and it is always rewarding when you get there and immediately make that connection to something that you have seen a season ago. Even I only noticed how much foreshadowing this episode carries towards events that are very, very far away for you at this point.

Fred Johnson - the butcher . His character on the Walking dead was Tyrese John (TJ) Frederickson and his backstory was he worked in a BBQ place cutting up meat and cooking. Coincidence? Anyway I do like Steven's mind trying to find connections and figuring out the connections. Who is the Master and who is the padawon/apprentice? It has been awhile but I found Dawes's speech about his sister very powerfully acted. He was so good on Cherynobl. But I saw the Expanse first a while back and then saw Cherynbol just in January this year. But I didnt appreciate Dawe's the actor. He is so good.
