@@OutsideTheNBAChannel Yeah I agree. He definitely deserved them. But it's true that it's not like Mutambo who has to play better defence than Rodeman, Haqeem, Pippen ext to win one
to me no he was not a four-time defensive player of the year but if you tell me, you could've got been a two time defensive player of the year that's perfectly acceptable. there are certain years he should've never gone defensive player of the year for example 2017-18 and that the war should've gone to Anthony Davis people forget that Rudy Gobert only played like 50 games that season; does the year of 2021 where it should have gone to Ben Simmons; the other two defensive player of the years I think were acceptable for him to win
I don’t mean to be picky but I think you might miss understand the word objectivity, if it was then it would need to be discussing an undoubtable and well objective truth and outside of statistics everything shown is opinion based which there isn’t a problem with but still far from factual information (of course outside of statistics)
I can’t imagine the mental gymnastics some of these stupid ignorant players to flat out throw his accomplishments out the window like he “luckily got those awards”
They are just jealous of rudy. Shaq, draymond etc are mad at rudy because he got more dpoy than them. They only take highlight when he gets smoked and turn their head when rudy is incredible.
6:07 here is a point you may have missed in your assessment of the situation there is a factor that seems to be going under the radar and that is that he is such a deterrent that people simply choose not to shoot when he is around and that right there invalidates the point of goberts contests per game averages players actively attempt to score on gobert you cannot say the same for Victor and for that reason statistics like the ones mentioned don’t overthrow the eye test and what’s actually the cause of mentioned statistics I think it was the most outrageous upset of an award since Lebron missing it for someone who didn’t make first team all defensive
Also, I somewhat hate team defensive rating because it's sometimes denies the effect of what an individual's impact is it should be based off that players defensive impact on the floor
@ agree plus there is a second level of consistent, but there's also the film and how an individual impacts in Office like if we watch Holiday we see that he is so great at preventing certain action from happening and eliminating place within the same thing with Draymond Green
Maybe it's like when they do a martial arts demonstration and break things with punches and kicks. You need something that seems impressive to break, you need a certain standard of resistance. Punching through a wet cardboard box is not impressive. Breaking a cinder block? Better. But if you know how to strike it, breaking a cinder block is not as difficult as it appears. Rudy is a cinder block. Luka is Chuck Norris.
Personally, I do not watch regular season. I watch only playoffs. So I only see Gobert being destroyed in single coverage by Jokic and being regularly played off the floor. Great he is an amazing regular season rim protector.
Jokic cooks every big man in single coverage, it’s just impossible to do against someone that gifted offensively. Rudy as the help/weak side defender made Jokic play down a level. (Basically the same thing Dwight/AD did except this is the TWolves doing this against a much better Nuggets team)
Sometimes I feel like we're comparing the wrong numbers. We need to compare figures using the same metric. For example, season or per-game statistics are less precise than per-36-minutes statistics. Last year, when you were comparing Gobert to Wemby, the figures were irrelevant to me, knowing that Wemby used to play less than 30 minutes per game. Regarding team impact, some people say it's harder to achieve good figures on a good team, while others say the opposite. What I remember from last year is that the Spurs' defense was absolutely not the same with and without Wemby on the court. However, we cannot conclude anything definitive from that; it could be due to Collins or Bassey performing poorly, or Wemby doing very well. But at least it measures an impact. At the end yeah Gobert deserved the award but if we see DPOY as an individual award Wemby would have deserved it. We saw them on the same team with France this summer which is a fantastic opportunity to compare their impact. Honnestly, Gobert struggled.
Well, ultimately Wemby is a better player and it was the right decision for Collet. It was also the right decision in terms of the viewing product, as the Gobert and Wemby lineups were not it.
I still don’t understand why people seem to think it’s team based. The award is literally called defensive “PLAYER” of the year Same with most Valuable “PLAYER” of the year. If it was team based and how the team did it would be called the most valuable team player of the year 😂
Basketball is a team sport genius. Generating defense as an individual is obviously gonna impact the team. The term “team based” doesn’t even make sense.
You talk about how Gobert's -12 on/off rating was a massive reason why he won the DPOY and then you completely ignore it when Wemby also had -12 on/off in 2023/24 (Gobert had -2). Absolute hypocrisy. The Spurs had the worst defense of all time when Wemby was off the floor, but he carried them to a top 5 defense when he was on the floor. He was by far the most impactful defender that year.
Did you forgot the team's defense also has an impact. Victor was incredible but the spurs defense was trash. I mean he talked about it in the video. Did you even watch it?
@@Jeremy-is6dy The Spurs were terrible when Wemby was off the court with a 121 DRTG, but they were close to a top 5 defense with Wemby on the court at 112 DRTG. That's the same on/off differential that he used as an argument for Gobert's 3rd DPOY, then he chose to conveniently ignore it when that same argument could be used in favor of Wemby. He's just cherry picking whichever stat advantages Gobert.

Yes, he wasn't THAT GREAT but he was always a bit better than the second one who wasn't that great anyway.

It's good to have some objectivity in this world of haters.
I appreciate you noticing! We really tried to be as objective as possible.

I would say the player hate him in personal rather than he is not deserving the DPOY because he guard them so well.
No word about AD for 2024...
We tried to focus on the main arguments for each year, as we still wanted to keep the video under 10 mins.

no he made a lot of improvment on is game look what he did on the suns in playoffs
It really depends on matchups. Against Denver, any big body could have done his job.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Nah Wemby deserved that one 4 sure.
Great video and use of data
Glad you liked it!
RJ shut Wembayama down quick and he's right 😂😂
Simply put if he’s not on your team you hate him. Been making the league look bad for years shutting the paint down.
Whether you rate Gobert or not is basically a basketball IQ check
Thanks

TBH I think Derrick White and Jru should've been co-DPOY
Dude, u look like Kevin Love. Who is that player trashing Rudy at 1:20
The player is Josh Hart. I've never gotten Kevin Love, usually it's prince Harry. Thanks for watching 😊
So far he def will not be winning it this year unelss the wolves pull off a miracle the rest of the season. They are starting to heat up!
