Just found this channel- excellent points on getting the feel for our first environment -water. I was a high school and college swimmer and competitive swimmers are never taught to just enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by water and to just enjoy the feeling of being in water. I do that now and also use being in water as a meditation. In water your body is free of gravity and touch and is in the perfect environment to just float and meditate and clear the mind. We spend our first nine months surrounded by water - nature must be telling us something.
Also I would add these two points: 1) There are lots of ways to scull. You can do it in catch position emphasizing high elbows, in the middle phase of your pull or at the end of the stroke. Pick one depending on where you tend to lose the feel for the water most. I also really like sculling on your back, feet first, arms overhead. Really good for body position and balance as well as feel for the water. 2) Even better drill for IMMEDIATE effect is swimming with fists or antipaddles or tennis balls. 200-400 meters with fists and you feel like your hands are XXL paddles once you start using them. This also teaches swimmer to use the forearm more efficiently since you take the hand out of equation by clenching your fists.
Good points. The sculling on your back thing is really hard to get a feel for, but keep at it and you'll get it. You can also scull on your back with your arms by your sides and your hands paddling in a figure-of-eight pattern. Correct me if I'm wrong tho, I'm not 100% sure.
Very good points here Eugene! With this video I like to preface by saying this is our own personal system for skulling, but like you mention there are plenty of really amazing skulling drills you can add that give you results. Thanks for sharing!
As a person who doesn't have a coach I find this very useful. Never knew the actual purpose of sculling. Thanks for this! Love it if you could do stroke clinic for freestyle kicks like 6 kick beat etc. Never really get it correct or maybe because I never understood it.
Thanks for the recommendation! We will definitely add that to the pipeline for drills. Thanks for the support and let us know how you feel after using your skulling at the pool!
I have to say, I clicked on this video because I do not have any confidence in the water, and I always believe that I’m not progressing, but besides that point, I’m glad I clicked. Maybe this will help me progress
I do total 150meters dolphin kick with board, 150m breast, 150m left side stroke, 150m right side stroke, 150m back and 150m butterfly in 28min with breaks,,,,,, just can't stop swimming I love it‼️
Phlex Swim your really knowledgable about swimming, is why I'm always watching your vids, I have always been a swimmer, but never competed, however I do know I can swim 50m in a 25m pool in 45 sec was last time I checked and that was b4 I got faster, cause now just don't have time to check again but is that fast?
That is very good! If you love the sport we would definitely recommend finding an organized team to join which will only fuel your fire to get faster, along with add some social elements to having fun and coming to the pool. Masters swimming is great for it also. Thanks for all of your support!
Phlex Swim sweeeet so I'm maybe on right track, last week I joined masters,,,,, crap are you in Canada somewhere, don't tell me just wondering cause is there chance I may race you❓ if so I don't know,,,,,,, you look fast too😱 well again ty for your time and please keep up vids, maybe add side stroke,,,
We are not in canada but hopefully meet you one day at a masters meet! Congratulations on just joining the team, keep it up, and we will work on some more videos for you!
Love this video. I like to pick the slowest lane, tuck a pullbuoy between my knees, and scull away behind the old folks just to prevent me from cheating and going faster cuz I was kicking hard hehe. I don't have a snorkel, which would help me keep a good body position, but you don't really need one. I like pairing the first sculling drill (small paddles from side-to-side) with a dolphin kick, to help me get a feel for the body undulation. Think Luke mentioned that one before in one of the earliest Phlex videos. Thanks guys again for a cracking vid.
I swim about 1:35 for 50 meters. How many seconds could I actually decrease my time ? 5-10 ? More ? Also would it be OK to do sculling with a snorkel or a buoy ?
Adding a snorkel or a buoy is a great idea! It isolates all other factors and just lets you feel the water out perfectly. The world is your oyster, there are swimmers out there that go below :50 in the 100m Freestyle! Keep working at it and time will continue to drop.
Thank you so much. All this time I thought there was something wrong with me, as people usually say it takes them 30 - 45 sec for 50 meters. I started with 1.50 for 50 meters (with a lot of breaks in between). After 8 practices (of about 35-45 of effective swim time each), I'm down to 1.15 for 50 meters, no breaks. Although I still can't do 100 m with no breaks.
I'd say feelings fade as we are getting used to swimming - a couple of weeks without it and oh my... water feels familiar but sooo different :D like a close person after a pause in relationship.

Spot on! You are so good at absorbing everything we put in these videos
Thank you!
I'm going to try it first thing tomorrow.
Please report back here and let us know how it goes!
You should try to get caeleb dressel in a vid. I would like to see his take on how to do underwaters and turns.
Keep up the good work guys 😁

Like long distance! Ha!
Long distance relationship with a swimming pool. Now that's something to think about.
I just learned to swim 2 months ago and I just joined a swim team ... 😭 I’m a bit scared first meet on Saturday and I think I suck... I’m scared
Nice music
Snorkel and fins makes sculling much less stressful on my old body.
Oh and side stroke is 80% sculling
The music is too loud!
Ya I notice he doesn't do side stroke ever‼ lol I am a better swimmer on account I can do all strokes⁉️ hehe
