  • On this Never Done Vlog episode Clint Grover talks about his experience with a bilstein 5100 shock upgrade he made to his 2005 Ford Super Duty with a 6" lift and 37" toyo open country m/t tires.
    Clint reviews the monotube shocks and gives his personal experiences with them on his lifted truck as well as gives a comparison between the Bilstein 5100 and the Rough Country shocks he replaced.
    In the end he concludes that one of the best and most affordable options for fixing a rough riding pickup truck is upgrading to a monotube shock absorber.

    Very Well said! I had the exact same experience, was not impressed the first day at all. I said pretty much the same thing in my review. I have an 01 & 06 Sierra 2500hd, one with bilstein and one with Rancho 9000xl shocks. Their almost comparable in comfort, but for some reason the bilstein rides like a Cadillac and the Rancho is more unrefined. But the adjustability of the shocks to go from a softer to a harder shock is still pretty cool. Through and through, I would buy the bilstein over Rancho any day. Rancho was more expensive for me also. My rancho's are over 2 years old and look like rusted piles of crap now. I haven't had the bilsteins for more than 6 months, so no comment yet. Bilstein for life, I wish they made coil over kits for my grandmother's Honda, turn it from a tuna can to Lexus real quick.

    I've installed Bilsteins on everything from VW Busses and vintage Mustangs to trucks and BMWs over nearly 50 years. The worse the vehicle normally rides, the more you notice how Bilsteins improve the control and comfort. They won't make a 66 mustang handle like a BMW M5, but they get much closer. The Bilsteins always need a few thousand miles of bouncing over stuff to seat and smooth the piston rings and shaft bushings. My buddy has over 300K miles on his Bilsteins on a 1990 Toyota pickup and they still ride like they did after their break-in period. They stay consistent until the day you somehow blow one out crashing off a boulder or rolling the vehicle.

    Nice commentary. I just installed Bilstein 5100s on my 2017 RAM 3500 SRW 4x4 Mega Cab and the ride is extremely better.
    Prior to the change I was getting beat to death. The new shocks and lowering the tires to 70psi front and 55psi rear really helped a lot.

      I Know You're Right But WOW. That’s amazing! 500k, it’s a Diesel right? My is a 08 newer body style and has 79k, it has low miles but the shocks were kinda rusty and not absorbing bumps well, I went with the 5100’s because I haul a lot of weight in the bed. I’m either empty or full with a load so I went with he 5100s and made a huge difference.

  • @John___Dough
    @John___Dough 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree when I put my shocks on it seemed to take a few days to smooth out I was told after I should have primed the shock by pushing it all the way in and out 5 times before install maybe that the ticket

  • @wysoft
    @wysoft 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I put a full set on my '11 Frontier, set the front to 1" over stock and combined the rear with a 2" AAL which settled to around 1-3/4"
    First off, these are going to ride stiffer than your stock shocks, probably no matter who made your stockers - especially if you use the front ride height adjustment to any more than the middle settings. I rent Frontiers all the time so I know what the stock shocks ride like - soft, bouncy, and trying too hard to ride like a car.
    Your truck WILL ride like a truck, but you're going to get much better cornering control, much better control over nose-diving, etc. and large bumps and potholes that would have cratered out with the stock shocks are going to be soaked up by the 5100s no problem.
    This is also the first truck shock I've ever had that seems to ride BETTER when you leave the pavement. I really can't explain that one, but that's how it is. You can be rolling off the edge of a paved country road transitiioning to a rough washboard gravel road, and the truck will instantly ride as smooth as butter.
    If you live in the country these shocks are perfect. If you want a floaty and soft car-like ride, I'm not convinced that they're the best option, and you might be better served with OEM equivalent for your truck, but I personally don't care for a car-like ride in a truck.

It is hard the have a shock that can do it all, Pulling a 5th wheel and going off roading. Full adjustability is the key.

    Thank you! I have a 2016 Toyota 4runner trd pro. It came with a special edition set of bilstein coil overs on the front. At 40k miles, the passenger side spring broke in 2 places. Toyota fixed that. Now, at 83k, the driver side spring has broken in 2 places. This vehicle is only driven on the road, so my question to Toyota was "why". This suspension system is tuned for this vehicle, but the springs suck.
    Long story short, I've been looking at the 5100 shocks as a replacement. But, I dont have 2 springs, and I definitely don't want to use these trd springs.

I like your video because it describes what I'm feeling in my truck. The question I have is will the new 5100's change my weight limits? I tow a 3500lb camper and want to make sure I don't lose any weight capacity. Thanks.

    • @NeverDoneUSA
      @NeverDoneUSA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      William Brewer good question! Glad you liked the video. Your towing capacity will not be negatively impacted with a 5100 shock upgrade. The reason these shocks improve ride and vehicle stability on rough terrain lies in their monotube design as well as their valving etc. It's not a softer or weaker shock it's a better designed more efficient and thereby more effective shock.

      John Gotti NYC I understand the bad back thing, I have the same problem. The answer to your question really depends on how much money you want to spend. You could go with the bilstein 5100s and get a definite improvement in ride quality and handling or you could go a step further and do an air suspension system if you have the budget. There are also solastic options if you have leaf springs in the rear (I'm not familiar with how the Honda pilot suspension is set up). Ultimately I went with the bilsteins because I didn't have the money to go all out on a custom suspension system.

    • @NeverDoneUSA

The shocks are for dampening the bumps and helping to maintain contact with the road. So now I've discovered your video of Bilstein 5100 shocks........ and just a week ago I had the local Ford dealer install new OEM shocks on my 2005 F-350SD, diesel, Lariat, 4x4, dually ( just bought the truck 3 weeks ago) not real impressed with the ride so far (nor the repair bill). Better not have your tongue hanging out of your mouth when hitting a rough spot in the road or your tongue will be laying on the floorboard. Wished I would have seen your video 2 weeks ago. My truck also has air bags w/o the compressor. (Has the regular tire valve stems mounted underneath the rear bumper and you inflate the air bags like you would inflate a regular tire, I've tried releasing any air that might be in the air bags but no air has come out so far)

    • @NeverDoneUSA
      @NeverDoneUSA  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I did a huge amount of internet research (literally months of research) and ultimately decided that the bilsteins were the shocks for the job. The twin tube design just can't compete with the superior monotube especially if you go off road. The bilsteins wont make your trucks ride soft and supple but they will absorb shock incredibly well and with complete consistency resulting in a more comfortable ride than what you're probably experiencing currently. I haven't had any experience with the 4600s but if you've already got them you might as well give it some time and see if they settle in like the 5100s did on mine.

      @@dee1380 just wanted to give my input, I have the 4600s as a stock shock on my TRD off road tundra. Road quality, it settles quick but doesn't have much dampening. Off roading they're pieces of shit. Horrible shock fade just 10 minutes Into a trail. Can't wait to get my 6112 and 5160 on this weekend

    Are the 5100 good for Baja style desert running?

      @NeverDoneUSA  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Better than stock! But I'm sure there are better options for dessert racing. I know a lot of guys run King suspensions on that type of vehicle. You'd be best to contact the manufacturer and look at the dessert racing forums for more information on that.

      I appreciate the quick response! Actually Im not preparing for a race but I drive the same tracks once or twice a year. With the stock ones I feel like something is gonna break lol!
