@Lori Hanks Yes, Sweet Janis was ridiculed, bullied and called names and I believe she was never accepted as she would have liked. This I think unfortunately drove her deeper into drugs. I know this to be true as I was also bullied and made fun of in school and uad a hard time making friends. So in the end I got in with the wrong crowd to gain acceptance I fell into the drug scene as well. Totally devistated my life. For 12 long years I was a cocaine addict. But waking up one morning just wanting only to die I made the decision to either get straight with myself or end it. I finally found my self worth which saved me. If only Janis could have seen that she was worth way more to the world than what her peers conceived her as then she would have made it. But after so long of being beat down it finally drops you down to the bottom of the barrel. She just couldn't seem to find that she had so many fans that loved her much, including myself. So I blame the people who put her down for her demise. If only she could have truly seen how much she was loved. I was riding the high school bus home when the local rock station broke in with the news that Janis had been found dead in a motel room. Alone and with probably a heavy broken heart. We'll never know just what she really could have done with her potential, but er as fans can guess she would have rose to even greater heights. SO HERE'S TO THE SEEET YOUNG GIRL WHO STOLE MY HEART. You took a little piece of my heart when you left us and I cried when hearing of your passing. But you will remain in my heart and soul forever. God bless you and hope you were able to finally rest in peace.

Janis was some kinda special singer, entertainer. Loved her passion, energy. Her style in the 60s was some kind of freedom. Look at all those people gathering around her.
Janis always got so much love from her fans, but got so little in private life. Such a sweet gentle heart who's life was lost way too early. Only God knows what we have missed out on. I was fortunate enough to have grown up in that era. R I P JANIS.

Janis died about two blocks from where I type at a place called the Franklin Hotel (they changed the name to discourage morbid fans) and one day I walked to the hotel and counted the rooms to see which was room #5. I don't know why. Her early work with folk songs and old-timey standards is phenomenal. I like Cheap Thrills, as well. Thank you for this, Jamel, the dude with button-down and tie is a hoot as he dances grooviliciously.

"Ball and Chain" performed at the Monterey Pop Festival is a killer. My mom used to watch the Tom Jones show when I was a kid and her and Tom doing "Raise Your Hand" was great.
She sang Tom out of the ball-park, with that brilliant live version. Like her hero Otis Redding, JJ was in another league. Like Otis, she left far too early.
I was lucky enough to see her 6 months before she died and was sober. Unbelievable!! I have never seen a show with as much energy. I'll never forget her.
You are Sooooo lucky. Would have given anything to have been able to see her live. Such raw talent. She gave so much of her heart and soul and received so little love in her actual life. Have seen her in interviews. What a sweet lady. You are missed. RIP.
Thank you much for another Janis video! I had the pleasure and privilege of seeing her live at the Avalon Ballroom in SF the last time she played there. She blew the doors off and our minds as well. We were stunned and changed forever. A bright light that burned out way too soon.
I was never a huge Janis Joplin fan in the sense that I didn't buy her albums and sit and listen to them but I did have the good fortune to see her live with Big Brother just before they split up in 1968 and as a live act she was just awesome! I even have some polaroids of her and the band having an impromptu picnic at a park in the St Louis area the day after their concert which are a real treasure!
Janis put her heart and soul into every song she sang. She gave her audience their money’s worth, that’s for sure. And yes, she was definitely a people person. She was kind and sweet to everyone.

She is and always will be the Queen of Rock and Roll, nobody comes close. Her voice is one that comes along once every thousand years and, in my opinion, the greatest singing voice ever. Unfortunately, I wasn't alive to hear her sing in person, but luckily, her music will live forever.

I often sit back and ponder what would music sound like today if Janice Joplin ,Jimmy Hendrix, Kieth Moon, Jim Croce, Ronnie VanZant, & Randy Rhodes. Had not died so early. It would sure as hell beat some of the crap that comes out these days. You just named some of my most favorite people in the music world. So lucky to have grown up in the 50's and 60's. Nothing can compare to the music of that time. Of couse Skynyrd came a few years later and kept good music alive, but there hasn't been anything in these times that can touch it. You see, I am 66 years old and my son is 39 so especially at my age that song fits our life just as if it was written for us. I lost his mother 3 weeks after his birth due to complications from the delivery. Were married only 6 years and she was only 25. RIP my love and RIP Mr. Croce and all the entertainers who have gone before us. So many who lost their lives way too soon.

sigh.. another sub-par live performance marring a reaction video. The first time you ever hear a song it should be the original album version, so you can hear the song as it was intended, in high quality with all the subtleties of the instruments and lyrical tempo/timing. THEN explore live versions. Almost always a live performance is missing many things, but if you already know the song, your brain fills in the rest. But if have never heard the song before, you don't fully get the intended sound correctly. Having said that, the simpler the song, the more likely it is to translate well to live. There are some live Tori Amos versions that sound as good as the album, but then again it's mainly just her and the piano. On the opposite end, people are hearing RUSH for the first time and reacting to 2000 era live versions where Geddy's voice is trashed. Rush has some incredible early live versions of classic songs, but it's still better to hear the album versions first. Such a shame.
I’m 53 years old and drop listening to Janis Joplin because my mom was such a huge freaking fan! I have a 14-year-old daughter and she knows all her music because I play it so much. I mean listening to her music. It’s a good time.

She had a tragic life, had a very hard adolescence not being a particularly pretty girl. She wrote about having "been used to pull a train" meaning of course that she got herself into a situation with a bunch of guys who got rapey on her when she was under the influence. She debased herself and never got over that feeling of having been used. Then she got into the music business which is tough on the ego and full of greed and scams. She just couldn't get herself off heavy drugs. Very sad situation for an immense talent.
She always said she never thought that she was pretty, but she didn't realize that she was more beautiful inside and out than she could ever imagine herself being. I'm such a big fan and so fortunate to have grown up in her era. R I P SWEET SOUL.
Her energy and passion while entertaining and delightful in ways, is also sad because much of it came from what eventually killed her. Say that with respect, love Janis. Studio version is a must listen. Try, Cry Baby.
This was very early in her career when she was still performing with a glorified garage band called "Big Brother & the Holding Company." They were pretty amateurish in their skill level, as evidenced by the very poor "lead guitar solos." Janis was way ahead of them in talent and charisma level. Listen to the album "Pearl" with professional musicians "Full Tilt Boogie" backing her.
She looks so old! She was only around 25 years old in this video. I guess that is what all the drugs, alcohol, and smoking will do. She died at 27 from a heroin overdose.

It would sure as hell beat some of the crap that comes out these days. You just named some of my most favorite people in the music world. So lucky to have grown up in the 50's and 60's. Nothing can compare to the music of that time. Of couse Skynyrd came a few years later and kept good music alive, but there hasn't been anything in these times that can touch it. R I P to those who have passed. You have all left us way before your time, but at least we have their songs to remember you by.
No-one I know plays Jim Croce, except me. I love Jim. What a loss he was.
@@hannyhawkins7804 I too sir listen to Jim Croce. I think he is an excellent singer. Some of his songs have a very special meaning to me. Especially Time in a Bottle. You see, I am 66 years old and my son is 39 so especially at my age that song fits our life just as if it was written for us. I lost his mother 3 weeks after his birth due to complications from the delivery. Were married only 6 years and she was only 25. RIP my love and RIP Mr. Croce and all the entertainers who have gone before us. So many who lost their lives way too soon.

sigh.. another sub-par live performance marring a reaction video. The first time you ever hear a song it should be the original album version, so you can hear the song as it was intended, in high quality with all the subtleties of the instruments and lyrical tempo/timing. THEN explore live versions. Almost always a live performance is missing many things, but if you already know the song, your brain fills in the rest. But if have never heard the song before, you don't fully get the intended sound correctly.
Having said that, the simpler the song, the more likely it is to translate well to live. There are some live Tori Amos versions that sound as good as the album, but then again it's mainly just her and the piano. On the opposite end, people are hearing RUSH for the first time and reacting to 2000 era live versions where Geddy's voice is trashed. Rush has some incredible early live versions of classic songs, but it's still better to hear the album versions first. Such a shame.

I’m 53 years old and drop listening to Janis Joplin because my mom was such a huge freaking fan! I have a 14-year-old daughter and she knows all her music because I play it so much. I mean listening to her music. It’s a good time.
My favorite of hers is "Try" complete with brass section! You know, Big Mama Thornton was a major influence/idol of hers, and sadly died penniless. After Janis made it big, one thing she did was buy a grave marker for Big Mama. This is my favorite Janis song. She is really feeling it. My niece is named Joplin after Janis.
She had a tragic life, had a very hard adolescence not being a particularly pretty girl. She wrote about having "been used to pull a train" meaning of course that she got herself into a situation with a bunch of guys who got rapey on her when she was under the influence. She debased herself and never got over that feeling of having been used. Then she got into the music business which is tough on the ego and full of greed and scams. She just couldn't get herself off heavy drugs. Very sad situation for an immense talent.
She always said she never thought that she was pretty, but she didn't realize that she was more beautiful inside and out than she could ever imagine herself being. I'm such a big fan and so fortunate to have grown up in her era. R I P SWEET SOUL.

Another one of those artists-- it makes you ache when you think what they might've been capable of if they'd survived the booze and the drugs.
She was a TRUE ROCK STAR and lived the life of one.. Her music will last for decades to come.
Her energy and passion while entertaining and delightful in ways, is also sad because much of it came from what eventually killed her. Say that with respect, love Janis.

When Janis recorded her songs, she gave 110%, but when she did the songs live? 1000%!
This was very early in her career when she was still performing with a glorified garage band called "Big Brother & the Holding Company." They were pretty amateurish in their skill level, as evidenced by the very poor "lead guitar solos." Janis was way ahead of them in talent and charisma level.
Listen to the album "Pearl" with professional musicians "Full Tilt Boogie" backing her.
Utter garbage. They were original unlike the generic bands she fronted after. I guess The Doors guitar solos were also amateur?

I had a short conversation with her and fell in love instantly. She had a great personality.
She looks so old! She was only around 25 years old in this video. I guess that is what all the drugs, alcohol, and smoking will do. She died at 27 from a heroin overdose.
