In 1969 I was in the US Army, stationed in Germany. One of my roommates was from San Francisco and convinced me buy a ticket and go to Frankfort with him for this show. One of the better decisions I've ever made!
Как я вам завидую.
Oh my... "good envy"?! I was born in 86 in Brazil, I love Janis so much, I must have an old soul
I was introduced to Janis by an fhather in law jornalist, that work abroad in some war, and give me books about anarchism. Is good fortune that amazing people cross my life
I was born 1969 near Frankfurt and remember the TV logo of SWF3. Last Sunday I filmed someone singing this song at Mauerpark Karaoke Berlin. It is now the fastest growing video on my channel.
Janis coaxing that shy girl onto the stage and interacting with her is just precious.
I LOVE YOU JANIS !
I did not appreciate Janis while she was alive. It was many years later that I grew to appreciate her. (Wowza.) Two others words I would use to describe her: RAW and vulnerable. Thank you for sharing this clip.
This is my favorite live clip of Janis, getting members of the audience to join her on stage and dance and rock out with her! Janis sang like she felt and experienced everything in whatever song she sang...it was her performance that made her so great. She wanted you to experience it with her.
I have tears. So fricking amazing
She is the one and only of all time for me. No one like her before or since. I say it all the time but your reactions are simply the best. You should have millions of subscribers!
Beth Hart should be on your playlist, seeing as you love Janis.
@@BluesGirlBabe Big fan of Beth.
Joplin was the definition of visceral. Whatever was in her soul, she was bringing to the world with her voice.
Janis Joplin was such a down to earth person ❤. Great singer . Powerful voice ❤
More always in tne clouds….high
The BEST clip I have ever seen of Janis is "Tell Mama" from the film Festival Express. She's having so much fun that it's impossible not to have fun watching it, too. And she is just on fire! The sincerity of her delivery will give you goosebumps (it sure does to me). Janis's incredible singing and stage presence was perhaps only overshadowed by her sweet and generous heart.
Bethany, you have an excellent detailed commentary. I was at a concert by Janis Joplin when I was just a teen in Detroit, Michigan. The year of 1968 or 69. She was exactly how you described her. I was speechless at the time having a vivid description of her makeup. You hit it on the nail. Now 53-plus years later. You're amazing how you described her performance and behavior with her audience. You were there with me back in the late 1960's. Thank you for your input. You're great.
Janis was one of my favorites !!!!!
Thank you, Bethany 👍 This was such a treat, and your reactions were as lively excited, as Janis Joplin's performance. Amazing, how she engages with the audience, inviting an entire crowd on stage. 😍👋🧙♀️
I love you love Janis. She tends to be forgotten these days. Such a sweet soul. Like you
That's no true. Janis is beloved and her records sell very well.
If the passion you put into these shows,is any indication of your passion for your craft, girl, you're something very special.......
Janis has always been iconic in many ways but seeing her make a German audience groove like that is another thing that confirms it
(I am from Germany and have visited many gigs being a bit second hand embarrassed by the lack of excitement in some crowds like how are you so calm ?! But in this case I'm satisfied with the amount of joy and expression 😄)
Thank you. RIP Janis.
So sad we lost her so young,,,, and so many more
due to drugs
Couldn't be better really.
She was one of a kind. If you haven’t seen them, check out her interviews with Dick Cavett. Excellent.
Great singer, regards from New Zealand 🇳🇿
I agree Bethany...I was lucky to attend Janis' last San Francisco concert at Winterland less than a year before her passing. Her large brass band complemented
her awesome energy. A favorite of the many concerts that I attended in the 60s and 70s. I also agree about how covers can give "new life" and meaning to a
classic song, like Angelina Jordan's renditions of "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Billie Jean" and "California Dreaming".🙂
Very well said!
She was amazing ❤
Hey Bethany, I think you must be from the same planet.Your reactions are just as mesmerizing as her performance. Keep doing what you do.
Bethany, that was awesome. Such a great voice. Another great song of hers where you can hear a lot of the subtleties in her voice is "Mercedes Benz". A change of pace for her. One of my favorites. Thank you so much!
Your smile is incredible! You and Your parents obviously cared a great deal about dental care. Top smile on TH-cam. 👍🏻
I grew up in Southern California in Newport Beach. I was a teenager in the mid sixties. I saw any number of bands then including Janis in early’69.
It was pretty incredible. We didn’t think we were “making history “ it was just what was happening at the time.
Janice and I share the same birthday, she really was something special in every way
JJ has been my all time female vocalist for many decades now. I have kept up w/ music like a kid just in case another Janis comes along. I've heard a lot of great singers over the yrs, but she's still in a league of her own. Can you imagine what she would have been able to accomplish w/ modern recording techniques and video? She may not have been pop pretty, but her unique style & her magnetism made her a woman to behold when performing!
Beth Hart has come along.
Not do I have chills. I love the quality in the tie doing the twist. I've been a fan since a teenager- her rawness, perseverance, and vulnerability even though she passed years before I was born. And I had NO idea it was a covet. Me & Bobby McGee is always mentioned as a cover. I'm going to check out the original
Insane that she was only 26 at the time, it makes it even more impressive in my opinion.
beautiful
You just came up in my suggestions and I just watched your AIC and PJ videos. When I was watching AIC I was thinking if the emotion and feeling behind Janis Joplin and thinking they were similar. I am happy you’re doing these!
Sho was such a beautifull person but so high at the same time. Perfect voice
Love your videos. I've never seen anybody who who could be so happy over music, or who just seemed so genuinely happy to be alive.. If I was 40 years younger, I'd come a courtin;.
Look at that little hippie chic bring it! And the best part...she was Totally unpretentious! 🔥❤️💥
Любимая моя вокалистка, так рано ушедшая от нас. Великая хрипатая! Лучшая во все времена! Спасибо за реакцию. Лайк плюс подписка. Отдельное спасибо за русские субтитры
She was such an incredibly talented musician. It looks like she is wasted here, but her timing and power is impeccable.
Thank you
It is true what you said about covers. There are many youngsters who believe that 'Feeling good' is an original Muse song
Amazing that Janis and Karen Carpenter were (ARE) both so iconic, so different, and from the same era.
JJ was a wild ride.
Her cover of Me and Bobby McGee really brought attention to Kris Kristofferson’s song writing abilities.
Me and Bobby McGee, if you like Janis you have to hear that one you'll love it, remember in little garage band we covered this song and me and Bobby bobby McGee, one of the guys wives sang them both fun songs to play and always got the best reaction from the crowd playing Bobby McGee, though as well as we played sometimes the applause was probably mostly her's lol.
I love your hair.
The fact is that Janis, and not only her but Elvis and the Rolling stones too, popularised songs of black artists, songs that never got the recognition before - "Ball & Chain" of Big Mama Thornton, "Little Red Rooster" of Howlin' Wolf, "Hound Dog" of Big Mama Thornton, to name a few. In those days there was a big divide between "black" and "white" music. Artists like Janis, Elvis and the Rolling Stones helped cross that divide
Janis's Frankfurt concert gave us probably then best versions of her songs. By this time she had really developed her style
The studio version would have been a better option, but Janet had a very unique voice and gave us some fantastic heart felt music that has stood the test of time.
I am REALLY hoping you read this! My husband had me listen to Disturbed singing Sound of Silence. I would love to see your reaction to this deeply moving performance. I love watching your videos!😊
She actually did a reaction to this. Sort her videos by most popular. I think that reaction has over a million views for her. :)
Loved your reaction to Ms. Janice Joplin singing "Piece of My Heart". Given your interest in her as an artist, I'd really appreciate your reaction to a young GenZ singer-songwriter. The circumstances for this performance, and why this young lady, are summarized below:
Ms. Courtney Hadwin (19yo) was invited to open the NY Pops orchestra's 41st Annual Birthday Gala last month also celebrating Clive Davis' career in music production. He personally invited Ms. Courtney to perform "Piece of My Heart" in rememberance of his discovery and signing of Janis Joplin back in the 1960's. Before the week of the event, Mr. Davis informed an interviewer that he was inviting Ms. Courtney because he remembered when he first heard of this young girl, then 13yo in 2018. He got calls from both Simon Cowell and Howey Mandell telling him he MUST hear this amazing young singer who seemed to be like a reincarnation of Janis Joplin who'd auditioned for America's Got Talent (AGT). Voice, tone, rock growl, vocal fry, screams, control of voice and breathing, VERY active when performing onstage, totally taken by the music.
Apparently young Ms. Courtney knew a lot about Janice, who was one of her (many) influences on how to sing and perform onstage. A long list which included Etta James, James Brown, Tina Turner, and others, and then Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, and more from when Rock really had taken top-dog status in American music scene by the 1980s.
So Clive invited Courtney personally to open as first invited vocalist in rememberance of the start of his career signing amazing artists for his record companies. She's posted a vid of most of that performance on her TH-cam channel. Check it out on her channel, here:
th-cam.com/video/wNoxb8euv00/w-d-xo.html
But I STRONGLY recommend a more complete vid of her full performance opening the show, which is a mashup of that official video and fan footage from the balcony covering all the time from walking onstage to walking off. It's a much more complete experience, also showing Ms. Courtney employing some of the performance aspects she'd learned from observing Janice Joplin perform live. That mashup vid is here:
th-cam.com/video/gDM9jYavLqA/w-d-xo.html
Enjoy! I certainly have been as I keep it on repeat!
What a memory for the woman in the shawl -- her family probably passes the story down now!
Great to see you review music so varied in time and delivery. Always enjoy your reviews and your reactions. I hope you might consider reviewing Fun's Carry On done about 10 years ago. Stay well.
She was a host of superlatives but one that occurs to me is "live wire"... don't hear that one too much anymore but she could be characterized as a "live wire" watching this video... great analysis too...👍🙂
You should check out Sass Jordan she portrayed Janis in an off Broadway play based on Janis's life named Love Janis
Also watch the Doors - When the music is over live at the Hollywood Bowl.
You are incredible.😉❤️
I love these singing analyses you do. It brings such a deeper understanding of the music and I am such a music lover to begin with. Watching this Janis Joplin breakdown makes me have to reach out with a song recommendation for you that is a 'descendent' of Joplins style. My recommendation is Greta Van Fleet. Either 'Heat Above' or 'When the curtain falls' but you need to review both. They are so different but amazing in their own right.
That raw emotion is what Janis did best. She was a real individual as a performer. My favorite performance of hers is Ball & Chain, from the Monterey Pop Festival. The documentary of that festival has so many great musicians giving their all. Bethany, have you heard Polish singer Natalia Sikora's cover of Cry Baby on The Voice Of Poland? I think you'd be amazed by it. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/2Wndl_Az0ws/w-d-xo.html
I just went to your link and OMG! My mouth dropped to the floor..lol
What a voice... Haven't you analized Anasthasia? It is not my kind of music, but what a voice too!
Amy Winehouse performing Back to Black and Valerie whilst chilling on a couch. She was very special!
P.S Eva Cassidy. Her story is heartbreaking. One of the most perfect voices ever!
Talking about covers… you really have to breakdown ‘Kasey Chambers - Lose Yourself (Eminem Cover) Live’
Best cover and amazing vocals ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
RIP janis
"I love when a song is [covered] and..."
Me too. Favorite example would be Aretha doing Otis' R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
Love Janis! But why haven't you done Nirvana's Unplugged yet? 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night" Please!
please post more SOAD !! i also highly recommend the band Badflower
theres a great live vid of her and Tom Jones out there
Her solo performance of Little Girl Blue before the duet they do is one of her greatest performances of all time, in my opinion th-cam.com/video/8k2tvAk6cYs/w-d-xo.html
Check out the video of her and
tom Jones live on the tom Jones tv show singing raise your hands it is
a great performance by both of them.
You will love it.
Another example of someone shedding a new light to a cover song would be Jimi Hendrix' cover of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. Two completely different takes of one song, and both are equally amazing
Just discovered your channel... your AIC and Linkin Park reactions got me.
Might I suggest a Jim Morrison/The Doors reaction....
Possibly... when the music is over (live at the Hollywood bowl or original) or love me 2 times. Or ask your followers what doors song. Thank you
I played with a girl who could kill it when it came to Janis. When we did Bobby McGee she never missed a thing. This was many yrs ago down in Alabama.
hello Im bad at Englısh but I goıng to learn for your precious videos Dear Vocalyst...If only I can meet wıth you best regards 🎉🎉
The Liliac Band does a fantastic cover of this tune. The best I would say. Better than the original I would say too.
Nobody better.
Okay Part II ☺️ Just wondering if you have seen Jefferson Airplane - Somebody To Love (Live at Woodstock) performance. The original Rock Chick that seems to get little recognition. Her and her quivery type vibrato. Peace 🕊️☮️
Sorry, part III. About Grace Slick another thing that catches my ear is her sense of timing. Some sing on that beat like a human metronome while others play with time or smoothly weave through it like Miss K D Lang and some female jazz singers. Love 💓 that stuff. Peace 🕊️☮️
Example of what you're saying is Whitney covering Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You".
Have you done Kasey Chamber's cover of Eminem's, Lose Yourself? Best cover of all time. & I am a huge Janis Joplin Fan.
RAW
Crazy this is an "underperforming" clip as far as views & comments go...
Love Nina, love Ella... love a myriad of female voices.
But Janice wins every time.
Edit: I doubt there's a person that walked this earth that could/can do a better version of "A Woman Left Lonely" (for example) ...
Please show Janice doing “Me and Bobbie McGee”. She grew up in a town close to where I lived. She was ahead of her time and I feel like people were insensitive and emotionally cruel to her, because she was so different from what was expected and wanted her to be.
I know this isn't about janice. I've been binge watching your channel for a couple days. I don't know if you'll ever see this but Killswitch engage. The two singers they've had throughout the last 15 years.
React GABRIEL HENRIQUE again, he did Earth song, feeling good, believe, and others! He is amazing and your analisys ARE so good!
If you like Janice Joplin , take a listen to Beth Heart and Joe Bonamasa Song I'd Rather be a Blind Girl , the new Janice Joplin. Beth Heart 😊👍love what you doing .
I don't know if you've done it yet, but please react to Pentatonix's cover of this song. Thanks. Great reaction!
❤
You might be surprised how Fergie sounds with slash from guns n roses. Im convinced she should be touring with gnr
Yebba - My Mind (Sofar NYC)
Let me explain why I’m suggesting this one. Remember when you did Soundgarden but the first song you picked barely scratched the surface of what Chris Cornell is capable of? You need to revisit Yebba with this live recording of My Mind. I can promise you won’t be disappointed.
The poor girl in white was so embarrassed to be on stage, but the other dude was ready to rock lol.
Please do Sleep Token!!!
🎉🎉🎉
Love your stuff
Check out Red Sorvine Teddybear or Phantom 309 it's spoken word but not
Her performance at the Monterey pop festival was way better than this!!!! You need to watch it!!!!!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Listen to the band liliac 17 yr old sing this song live
Excellent suggestion! Melody has epic rock vocals. Bethany, you should check out Liliac's cover of this song.
It was a dance club.
I think Janis is the female vocal equivalent of Brian Johnson (AC/DC)... If her voice was a person it would be sitting in a smokey bar drinking a pint of beer and shooting pool... what makes her so important for music is she didn't wear a little black dress, didn't purse her lips, or wear her hair in a way that was deemed acceptable - she was more like 'coming through… I got something to get off my chest here…'
Would love if you’d review Joe Cocker!
Please check out Neverland (live '09) by Marillion 🙏. Be the first vocal coach to review this band (singer Steve Hogarth)😊
Absolutely love your channel. Did I mention Killswitch engage. You're welcome keep up the good work
now that's how to party kids.
th-cam.com/play/PLhglcaISkrdbW2rvkbw1xDScme4_PGa2y.html&si=YE0z3qMOPL_H051i Here's a playlist of Janis Joplins best stuff since you dig her music as much as I do Vocalyst lady.
Listen to asaf avidan - her lies
