The fact that the banditos burned the truck kind of undermines the theory that the surfers were killed because the banditos were after the truck. What are they covering-up here?

Hard to say. Cartel will do this at random. I lived remote near a cartel compound. They never targeted me. Had a crappy jeep. Some hunter was out there with a nice car and gear, they got him, found his vehicle ditched at the border.

My guess would be they just wanted to steal the truck and the surfers put up a fight. If killing wasn't planned, they probably burned the truck to hide evidence.

Let me confirm what the (hastily concocted) story appears to be. The three surfers were killed execution-style and the bodies dumped in a well two kilometers away from their burned out campsite, all for their truck tires, which were then stolen. By implication the perpetrators jacked the truck up to remove each wheel, removed the tires from each rim, and then replaced the empty rims back onto the truck before setting it ablaze? Is that what the story is? Fishy.

I have been down to Mexico more than 200 times. I have always loved it and the people there. Unfortunately, currently, it is unsafe. Even the Dept. of Defense has forbidden active military from taking leisure travel down there without specific authorization. In addition, the U.S. State Department has an active country travel advisory for Mexico. (The entire advisory notification warning can be read on their website, by anyone.) People should always check the country they are visiting PRIOR to traveling out of the U.S.
The active travel advisory reads -
Mexico Country Summary: Violent crime - such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery - is widespread and common in Mexico. The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in many areas of Mexico, as travel by U.S. government employees to certain areas is prohibited or restricted. In many states, local emergency services are limited outside the state capital or major cities.
U.S. citizens are advised to adhere to restrictions on U.S. government employee travel. State-specific restrictions are included in the individual state advisories.

I've lived in Rosarito Beach for seven years now. It was very stupid for those three guys to go to an isolated area to surf and camp when there is an excellent surf area just fifteen miles south of the border at the San Antonio exit with numerous short term rentals, restaurants, even a surf shop, AND a police station just 200 meters from the beach. In Mexico it is against the law to carry a gun so the criminals who carry guns know that they always have the upper hand when it comes to committing crimes and law enforcement isn't nearby.

But it Mexico, if you go off to a place where NOBODY is around for miles, you are putting yourself in a very deadly situation. I was dumb enough to do this in 1986 outside of Cabo San Lucas. We did not run into any bandits and the Federales did not stop us. We were just lucky.
