Woodturning: A Walnut Four Legged Square Bowl

  • Today's project is to see if making a four legged square bowl on the lathe is easier than the winged bowl I made ( • Woodturning: Why it's ... ) previously. You'll have to watch the video to find out, but it did turn out really nicely!
I hope you enjoy this video. Please let me know if there is a project you'd like to see me make and I will do my best to do it. Thank you for all the support you have shown me and the channel!

Ed, loved the video. I mostly do traditional and segmented bowls, but your video inspired me to try one of these. I used an 8"x8"x2" piece of curly birch that I had laying around and I was able to make a decent bowl on my first try on this last day of 2023. Pretty scary stuff and I don't think I will do another for awhile, but worth the effort.

Thank you very much! I find they do for me also. I don't know what it is, but I have such a difficult time with the gouge when truing up the roundness of the piece at the beginning. The bottom and inside are not too bad unless it gets deep and then I have to revert to the carbides. - Ed

Nice job, those 4 legged bowls can be tough, especially on the knuckles! A little advice, rub the bevel whenever you use your bowl gouge, except when u e shear scraping with it! I promise u will really see a difference in the cuts u make and the ease of using a bowl gouge! I started with carbide as well and haven’t pick up a carbide tool in 2 years since I was told to run the bevel of the bowl gouge. Way less sanding to, once u get it down a bit!! Good luck and keep up the good work!

See, that didn't hurt. Not too shabby for your first four winged bowl. Great Job!! However, I don’t buy the notion of your expressing some inexperience turning. I see nothing but professionalism in your turnings.
The marks around the bottom of the bowl looked to be burnishing marks from the tool. Lighten up on the pressure and take smaller bites. Turning at to low rpm could be the cause of those marks, as well. You want to turn +1000 rpm. Gotta keep the rpm high with carbide tools when turning. This is particularly true when turning the wings to minimize tear out and smoother turning.
Nothing wrong with using carbide on the project. Even seasoned wood turners will use carbide to make the job easier. As you become more proficient with a gouge, reduced sanding will result. However, be careful with the gouge where things get narrow towards the top of the back side. You'll get a bad catch. Small round carbide should do the trick here. Also watch your fingers around those spinning wings. You can lose or break a finger very quickly being hit by one or more. Other than this, I say NICE JOB!!! KEEP THOSE WOOD SHAVINGS FLYING.
There is a video somewhere on TH-cam that shows how to turn these bowls much easier by using sacrificial wool glued to your blank. It prevents injury from the rotating feet. If I can locate the video, I will post the link here provided TH-cam does not remove it.
    Here is the link: th-cam.com/video/NL6b_vfvZZA/w-d-xo.html
