Personally I would't think of a pattern as a "principle" different from "repetition". It's the repetition of multiple elements in the design therefore it should fall under "repetition" principle category. Right?

This is really good. I like the history part which often gets over-looked. With regard to principles, isn't unity similar to harmony and isn't pattern similar to rhythm? Lots of repetitive elements cross paths that could be condensed.
