I test drove a 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge EV and was pretty impressed. But, it was a compromise as it was and ICE car as well. I love the interior. The Google auto was sparse then too. Now look at their full BEVs! 😎
Look for videos from Sweden. Polestar 3 have started delivery in Sweden and we have CCS on all cars and chargers. So you can get full charging speed from V3 chargers.

On a somewhat tangential subject, I still think this is very relevant to the driver experience: All the displays I see have a LOT of reflections. The chargers are the worst, for multiple reasons-the type of display, and their being outside, sometimes even in direct sunlight. Some things can get really hard to read. This is not a failure of design for those providing these products. It's more that we need better displays, across the board, WRT reflections. It's not necessarily such a problem for indoor TVs and PC monitors. But for chargers, automotive screens, smartphones, and so on, this is a real problem.
Polestar 3 has better steering that's a big point in it's column. Both have the darned uncovered pano roofs, double demerit in my book. Kyle might do it at some point. It's in his wheelhouse, so to speak.
I own a 2017 XC90 T8 Inscription Pro with EV range of 18 miles. This car was light years ahead of the pack until 2022 in-terms of refinement, luxury and practicality. I tested the XC90 T8 2024 a few months back and it felt a much more nimbler car (suspension, steering, EV experience and engine insulation). I also own a VW ID-3. I watched closely the update of the XC90 T8 which came out last week. I was disappointed that it did not have the updates I expected like Higher density EV battery to allow for 70+ miles EV range, 4 wheels steering, DC charging and improved self driving which I would have liked to upgrade to because as much as a nice car the EX90 is I use the car for the long trips and do not want to go fully electric in this segment yet. I think Volvo missed the boat with updating the XC 90 drive train to something similar to the "Extended Range" technology similar to the Chinese manufacturers example given Li Auto and others do where the combustion engine primarily charges the EV battery and the car mostly drive on EV mode. Coupled with the anticipated updates I mention above the XC90 T8 would have been unbeatable again for more 5 years to come like it did when it was updated in 2016.
You keep saying ”clutch disconnect”. But there’s no actual clutch, is there? I mean, it’s a separate motor at the rear, which can drive or not drive the rear wheels, independent of what the front motor is doing, like on a dual motor Tesla or any other AWD EV, right?
It’s the same with vw that you need a tighter grip during an automatic lane change. And you usually change your grip while using the stalk, so it can lead to cancelled lane changes.
Price difference in Belgium for the EV9 (84k EUR) and EX90 (119k EUR) for similar specs is significant, so comparison in quality is not really in order.
perhaps gas cars should be driven in sport mode and adjust the mileage figures as well. Let's see how that goes. EPA is silly. They should also provide hwy and city range figures similar to ICE. Why the different criteria.
Does anybody know if the AWD performance option is available as drive modus on the regular twin motor version? If not, how would you select permanent AWD?
38:20 Why to cut the authentication for charging? This what I was looking for !!! Still not really working easily compare to just plug in with a Tesla.
Thanks for sharing Kyle. Maybe if they let the vehicle switch over instantaneously to Sport mode when the pedal is floored. That might solve the lag. (Software update)
Love this thing! I thin it's a unique product and love a bit of quirkyness. It's more elegant than an R1s. More unique than the E-tron /Q8 and the EQE... Volvo for the win!!! The Torque vectoring is a deal breaker too
"The Volvo EX90 Excellence is a fantastic example of the fast-growing capabilities and competence of our Shanghai design team," said Sophie Li, But Volvo's new design studio is far from the automaker's sole site in the country. Volvo now has assembly plants in Chengdu, Taizhou, and Daqing, in addition to another site in Shanghai for engineering R&D. The automaker itself, of course, is owned by China's Geely Group, based in Hangzhou, China.
The Ars Technica review compared the driving experience briefly by saying "it's hard to ignore the Polestar 3, built alongside the EX90 in South Carolina, which is several thousand dollars cheaper and much more fun to drive."
Polestar is supposed to be the Volvo analog for the Porsche Taycan (yeah, I know it's a stretch), so that gives you an idea of how different they are. This one is softish and laggy when not in Performance mode. The P3 dynamics have been praised widely.
Drove a XC40 for almost a month in the UK and Wales and oh boy I absolutely hated the ridiculous delay especially around all those roundabouts with the high pressure drivers in the UK. Those guys all expect you to Dash off quickly on first opportunity and the XC40 left me many times wondering if I was about to be whacked at the backside
That delay felt so bad at times that I heard myself say I’d never buy this XC40 as my car. If that delay is the same or even just a little better with the EX90 - after waiting 2yrs; I might not take it.
It’s shared between Volvo and Polestar. Right now only EX90 and Polestar 3 uses it. It’s more of a Volvo than a Geely platform. EX30 is built on a Geely platform and shares it with Zeekr X. And Polestar 4 is built on a Geely platform and shares it with Zeekr 001.
Odd to hear you compare drivetrain noise to the Lucid, implying the Lucid is quiet. The Lucid Air is one of the most notable motor noises I've heard in an EV. The very first one I ever went in I thought maybe something was wrong with it and that it had beaten on as a test car, but every subsequent one I've been in has the same low speed front motor noise.
The reason they're talking about it is they just made the comparison in the review of the updated lucid air. The old version which had substantial amount of motor noise
Needs a digital rear view mirror. Polestar has it for the model without the back window, so the tech and hardware is within the company. They need to implement it for all the models.
Sure, but just as an option. They don't work well for some people with farsightedness. With that said, I think you can also get them now for the C40/EC40 straight from Volvo parts, so I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes an option later.
i have one on my EV9 and i never use it, even with the back full. It's just annoying. A real mirror will always look better, feel more natural. For me its a gimmick.
When will you do a highway range test in winter? And maybe at a more realistic speed ot 160km/h... if you drive 70mph (110km/h) you will be ran over, it's bordering on dangerous. I have a 340 km (about 215 mile) trip I take every week, and I need a 7 seater that can do that while traveling at 100mph in winter.
@@rcpmac No, it's not. I don't hear people saying oh, VW is doing a great job when reviewing Porsche. So I don't want to hear it about Volvo. All Geely does is finance Volvo but Volvo is responsible for the content in the car, not Geely. Volvo is fairly autonomous in the creation of their cars unless they choose to use another Geely group car, like Zeekr, to base their cars own and thus far they've only done that with the Chinese-only market EM90. Please stop with the disinformation that Volvo equals Geely. Volvo is in the Geely Group but is the same Swedish brand they've been for years, just with a parent company with deep pockets.
@@benjaminsmith2287you’re absolutely correct! It’s developed and engineered in Sweden by Volvo and Swedish engineers. It’s as Swedish as it’s always been. But they also make the EX30 on a shared platform with Zeekr, the Zeekr X. But to be fair, Zeekr is also developed in Sweden by Swedish engineers. Zeekr’s development department is located in Gothenburg not just next to Volvo and Polestar. Volvo, Polestar and some or most of Zeekr’s development are done in Sweden/Gothenburg. Charging speed is disappointing. IRL you are limited to 500A. It needs higher voltage. Not that 200KW is bad, but for a big SUV with a big consumption it should be better. I currently still prefer the Audi A6 avant etron.
80-100k...R2S tri motors:) when at the evgo charging station...and no out plug in charge...that a pain the the ass...that is why you may get a different car.
The EX90’s excellent attributes make the less appealing bits all the more disappointing. Sad that a $90K car asks over $200 for a fixed sunroof shade. I’d much prefer a smaller, lighter expanse of glass with a mechanical shade. Also sad that the base model doesn’t have the upgraded suspension as an option, while the top spec car can’t be had with the smaller, lighter 20” wheels. I will take the ~7% efficiency gain of smaller wheels over the esthetics of filled up wheel wells any day. Particularly in a nearly 6,000 lb brick that cannot live up to the sporty pretense. If the double wishbones and air suspension provide a buttoned down but complaint ride, that would be my reason to tick the option box. That’s why I opted for the msport package on my i4 e40 even though that mandated larger wheels that I hoped to avoid. Here’s hoping that Lucid develops a more thoroughly desirable SUV.
Pre-order on day 1, but canceled about a year ago with all the delays. It was a mess to get the $500 refundable deposit back, taking about four months as I finally caved and went with Tesla. I hope Volvo adds competition to the EV market with this model by selling a solid product.
I cancelled recently (just not ready to upgrade, but also want to see the software updates roll out - Volvo have stung me in the past with that stuff). But got my refund within a couple of days. The dealer handled that though, so perhaps your dealer was the issue? Regardless, I feel your pain.
@@rcpmac Agreed but 70k would go along way to dealing with those drawbacks, as would a warranty. Can't imagine the Ex90 will be a world apart in efficiency either.
@@0-Will-0 Well, if. you've got a warranty and an alternate ride you could do a lot worse than the Q8 etron. Most EVs have some issues and the recalls. If you can get an Etron w/ Audi warranty coverage for $20K it sounds like a EV bargain to me. The battery warranty is very long. Good luck!
Why such a long hood? It looks like an ICE car. It almost feels like it wasn't designed as an EV from the ground up. I know it isn't an ICE conversion, but still. Kind of strange.
Volvo evidently wanted a silhouette that aped the ICE variant (XC90) of this vehicle. Clearly it isn't optimized for maximizing space usage for being an EV.
As an EV9 owner with a family DC Fast charging is important, I can go longer but having the kids longer in the car is not ideal. I guess if I can make it 1/2 way on the charge its fine, but multiple stops is not ideal
85mi and 35% batt remaining according to the dash at 14:10 That translates to 2.3mi/kwh on it's face. I don't want such an inefficient EV. 4mi/kwh should be the standard (edit: I'd miss my 4mi/kwh BMW i3)
The Volvo might be the same price as the tesla, but it has higher quality. I did configure one. Skip the performance, go for the twin motor. This is a Volvo and drives like one. My XC60 hybrid was fast, but far from sporty. Go for a comfort luxury trim. My next problem: why the 6 seaters. Everyone here buys the XC90 as a family car and 5 seats + full luggage capacity or 7 seats can be way more useful than 6 seats with little trunk space. This is a comfortable family car, no limo, neither a sports car.

80-100k...R2S tri motors:) when at the evgo charging station...and no out plug in charge...that a pain the the ass...that is why you may get a different car.
Native nacs from the start would make it a no-brainer
Does this EX90 have camp mode/dog mode?
It's pretty, but I would rather have the new XC90 facelif PHEV.
Wow, not quite Etron refinement, but I can buy a used Etron for about £20k!
With horrible efficiency and battery issues
@@rcpmac Agreed but 70k would go along way to dealing with those drawbacks, as would a warranty. Can't imagine the Ex90 will be a world apart in efficiency either.
Run away from the Etron. You can thank me when you're a safe distance.
@@cbotten106 really? Even with Audi warranty? There seem precious few ev alternatives with adjustable road height.
38:36 hahahahahah
I have a 2018 XC90. Until I can charge this at Tesla chargers, it's a no go for me.
You don't have to wait more than a few months right? :)
@@Per.Norberg Sure it's "right around the corner"!
I charged my c40 at Tesla chargers on a 1100 mile road trip last week?
what is with the London Taxi look???? volvo??????
Gotta have a neon yellow in the palette!
Charging curve is pretty weak.
Too many compromises for the money. No roller sunshade, too small to be a functional 3-row (same as XC90), meh charging and efficiency.
Finaly
Seriously. Took forever to get road tests on this car.
So capacitive steering wheel doesnt work and lane change either 🤣🤣
How can you have no idea what the steering is doing? Surely you would crash many times in a reasonable journey.
It's not a communicative steering system. It's still connected to the front wheels. Unless you're just being silly.
Thanks for the video ! Poor charging curve though :( my LFP model 3 holds the curve better
The XC90 looks better.
Especially the updated version that was recently shown.
Try to stay in place when talking your making me dizzy
85mi and 35% batt remaining according to the dash at 14:10 That translates to 2.3mi/kwh on it's face. I don't want such an inefficient EV. 4mi/kwh should be the standard (edit: I'd miss my 4mi/kwh BMW i3)
do you think anyone watching an EX90 review video cares that you prefer driving a smaller more efficient car?
The EPA says that the EX90 will get up to 310 miles of range from the 111 kWh battery pack. ... LOL
