I worked in a Honda shop when the Wing first came out. It was a sensation. The sales guys used to start them up, balance a nickel on the cam chain cover, and rev them up to 3,000 rpm and the coin would just sit there. Try THAT with a Harley - or any bike from the 70s for that matter!

Wish I still had it and often wonder what happened to it.

@@MarkReynoldsRestorations Hi Mark. Your welcome ! My Great Compliment for you Restauration with the Beautiful Honda Goldwing. I speak you later. Greetz , Walter
Nice. I bought a new 1978 Goldwing like this with the same color I added a color matched Windjammer fairing. The maroon seemed darker than this but hey that was 48 years ago. What an awesome ride. I rode chain drive for years and It took a little to get used to the drive shaft in corners. They said to accelerate through the corners and that will keep it from trying to fishtail.
We bought a new one, in these in the same colour and, after installing SW air shocks , on the rear, modified forks, for air and after installing a compressor under the top of, plus a dual air gauge and controller, it was the nicest bike we ever owned. Fitted an Adelaide built full touring fairing and panniers. Ride it on our honeymoon,, from Melbourne up through the Snowy Mts.and all around northern Victoria!
I had a KZ900 in the late 70s and a friend of mine had one of these. He let me ride it one day and I couldn't believe how smooth it was and surprisingly fast to boot. Nice job bringing her back to life.
My brother in law had one back then. I had a bike for a few years by then, and remember taking it for a ride. I do remember it was a smooth riding bike, not much else. It just wasnt my kind of bike. But now, yes it would be nice to have a nicely restored one. Even better though, another bike I rode that a friend of mine had, a Honda CB 750.
I just had one of these given to me that will need some work. I was excited to get to work on it until I saw the amazing job you did! LOL! Should be fun.

I have a '77 GL 1000That I restored about a decade ago, love the bike. I've been planning to go through it again since I have to replace the stator anyway.
Stunning restortion! Having done one of these myself, I don't even know where you start to find the parts you did. I had a LOT of trouble sourcing just about everything, especially NOS. A couple of things I noted: Why are the bars sitting so far forward? Secondly, do you have the grab bar for the back? If not, I have a very nice extra. Too bad you don't have the Honda logo on the rear seat.
Bryan, the bike is a USA spec with the longer bars so that might explain why they look further forward. The seat unfortunately i had issues sourcing so its an aftermarket one.
I wanted to keep it original and use OEM exhausts but they were to far gone. I looked everywhere for original ones but without any luck. The Motad were the next best thing.
You resurrected a wonderful machine, I had a '78 myself, same color but without the gauges, it screamed down the road, and solid as a rock. did you have to replace any parts or just re-chromed and reworked them? either or its beautiful, my compliments. Jim
It was never about the final valuation or making a profit on it. It was a project over lockdown and a bit of a personal test to see how good I could actually get it. Nothing was untouched, it became a labour of love. It came in just under 6k overall, but that doesn't cover the 300 hours labour that was put into it. No idea what it's worth, I've always said it's worth what ever someone is willing to pay for it. For me, it was more the pleasure of working on it and bringing it back to its former glory 😊
It took just under 12 months from start to finish. 9 months was waiting for the chrome bits to come back. Cost for the chrome work was the most expensive at £1200, the rest was about 3k. That included the zinc plating, powder coating, paint and materials, new tyres, gaskets set, new throttle cables, carb bits, wheel bearings, coolant and lubes, calliper seals, new head bearings. That doesn't include over 300 hours labour though. It wasn't about the money though, it was more about doing a proper job, it was more a labour of love and not about resale value.
I really appreciate your skill and hard work on that wonderful bike! Looks amazing. Would you have any advice for someone looking to purchase a GL-1000? Thank you for sharing
Thanks for your feedback, its much appreciated. As for advice I'd say look out for a bike thats original as possible. Lots of these bikes have been modified over the years and original parts are missing. Original parts can be hard to find.
Fantastic restoration. I have a '78 GL1000 that is identical (pre-restoration) to yours. How long did the restoration take? How much did you invest? Did you just repaint/polish the engine (no rebuild)? How about the final drive? Was the frame powder-coated? Did you get the gauges serviced? Thanks!
@johnclifford1911 it took just under 12 months from start to finish. 9 months waiting to get all the chrome work back. I put over 300 hours into it, coming in about 3.5k spent.
Absolutely fantastic job. Very well done. Let me know if you ever wish to part with her. Just one more detail to finish the job.....the left hand cylinder head Honda badge. ;)
Well spotted. There were a few bits I was waiting for before finishing the final video. The front indicators, rear grab rail and the badges. instagram.com/p/CPRKFYPnzXm/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
Brilliant job, I own a burgundy 78 here in Australia, hope t0 get it back on the road soon (leaking head gasket). We bought it back from a bloke we sold it to about 10yrs ago. Also managed to recently find a NOS set of original mufflers as it currently runs the same pipes you have on yours. Most beautifully balanced bikes, thanks for giving this one a new life.
@@MarkReynoldsRestorations Rare as hens teeth mate but the pipes you chose still look the part. Did you see the 78 that recently sold at Mecum for $12.5k? Super under appreciated model which I think is juts starting to come into it's own.
The engine had good compression and oil pressure so for now it was just a good service and get some miles on it. If there are any issues in the future then it might be a rebuild.
That was the one thing i wasn't really happy with. Originally the wheels would have been polished and then lacquered. Unfortunately they were to badly corroded to polish so i had them powdercoated.
@@MarkReynoldsRestorations They look great on the bike, those old Comstar wheels are just not designed to be taken apart for repair, so powder coating is a good option.👍
I always road my 57 HD flh last rigid. My buddies wanted to ride to Sturgis. I found an old gold wing Aspencade. I road out and back no problems. Sold it for twice as much as I paid 10years later.
I owned a GoldWing GL-1000 Limited that had a kick lever that was stored on the right side of the imitation gas tank & plugged into a socket at the rear of the left side. I didn't see the set-up on this bike, so I guess it was only on the Limiteds.
beautiful video and great work, but the magical side of this restoration is missing, namely the first start which highlights the rebirth of this motorcycle!
It's just a hobby. I used to work in the classic car restoration trade but haven't done it for a living for over 10 years now. These are just little projects I'm doing at home in my garage on weekends.
This looks fantastic. Great job. How much did it all cost including the cost of the bike please? I'm considering a GL1000 and know what I'm like - it would have to be similar to this level!! I think the brown looked better on the original bike tho!
All in it was about 6-7k. That doesn't include the 300+ hours i spent working on it. It wasn't about the money though. It was more about bringing it back to life and testing myself to make it as good as it could be.
@@MarkReynoldsRestorations That's pretty good. I was hankering after a Suzuki GT750B but values are nuts atm and the Wing is more akin to my riding style plus there's a very active club. You have a great workshop and it's very apparent you know what you're doing whereas I don't! I can clean a bike to showroom standard and keep it that way but it has to be good to start with lol!!
@SuccessShared they're great bikes to ride. I spent 20 years restoring classic cars for a living. I'm a painter/pannel beater by trade but ended up doing mechanical over the years too. I don't work in the trade anymore, so this is just a hobby now to keep my hand in and add to my personal collection. The workshop is just my garage at home. It's feeds my inner OCD 😚
0:10. Have to pause the video to cringe in pain at the idea of trying to restore something that rusty. OMG. WOW, amazing work! Have you ever taken an IQ test? You've got be somewhere around 165? How did you restore the gauges to look bright red again?
So beautifull... congrats But i want to change my rear suspensions for chrome as you have done because it's more beuatifull, but the seller told me that it's risky because it can make rust quite quickly on it.... you don't have problems like that ?

I've spent over £4000 on the refurb and spent over 300 hours working on it.
@@MarkReynoldsRestorations thank you - It will probably be better for me to buy a newer one. Yours looks great, good job
I didn't plan on going this in depth, got a bit carried away. 😳
I might be wrong but this is a 78 K3 and I believe they stopped having a manual kick start on the K3s.
Definitely a 'MASTERS' level work.
🏍️👍🏍️👍🏍️👍
A great bike to restore 👏👏👏
Ah that’s beautiful i remember when it comes to Colombia in 1975 very expensive there at the time still looks better than the new ones
Lovely bikes 🙂
ホンダの名車を蘇させてくれてありがとう。
私がずっと探している車両だけど日本にはもうない、悲しい
見てくれてありがとう。 私はこの美しい自転車をスクラップヤードに置くことができませんでした。
beautiful video and great work, but the magical side of this restoration is missing, namely the first start which highlights the rebirth of this motorcycle!
I posted a video of the first road test.
My latest build I learnt from the comments and added the first start.
Awesome work. Is this a hobby or a profession. The frame and chrome work looked great. A video on that would be cool. 👍🤟
It's just a hobby. I used to work in the classic car restoration trade but haven't done it for a living for over 10 years now. These are just little projects I'm doing at home in my garage on weekends.

What Music Did You Use? Fantastic Build
I used an editing app called PowerDirector and it's music that comes with that. It's called Hey Hey.
@@MarkReynoldsRestorations great music Thanks.
So beautiful 🤩 love to have one like this ❤
Great job .. beautiful result .
Beautiful Goldwing as well.!!!
Brilliant. Where did you find this bike, and was it a runner?
@@SuccessShared it was an American import, it ran but not very well. It hadn't been on the road for 15 years.
Now that is a thing of beauty well done
Thank you 😊
0:10. Have to pause the video to cringe in pain at the idea of trying to restore something that rusty. OMG. WOW, amazing work! Have you ever taken an IQ test? You've got be somewhere around 165? How did you restore the gauges to look bright red again?
Thank you.☺️
The only thing I don't get is that huge handlebar... why?! Wasn't anything smaller around there?
This was imported from America so has the American spec handlebars. It's the orly thing I don't like about it too. 😒
Is that Yama exhaust system?
It's a Motad exhaust.
Tem alguma gold wing para venda em excelente estado de conservação.
Nice motorcycle😍👍
So beautifull... congrats
But i want to change my rear suspensions for chrome as you have done because it's more beuatifull, but the seller told me that it's risky because it can make rust quite quickly on it.... you don't have problems like that ?
They are still like new. 👍
Ok....😉 do you remember the manufacturer's mark ?
