    These are great bikes. Solid as a rock, and surreally smooth and powerful. Original exhaust and “sit up and beg” bars are rare.

    I was working at a Honda dealer in 1975 when the Goldwing debut ,I was very impressed with the bike,but I was just in my late teens and could never afford the asking price. 4 weeks ago I found a nice looking 1975 model for sale ,it had been parked in a storage unit since 2008,fuel from the tank gummed up the carbs and made its way into the cylinders which were stuck from the goo that turned to varnish over the years. I disassembled serviced the heads, cleaned the pistons and cylinders,rebuilt the carburetors .and in less then 4 weeks I have a running GL1000.I still have another couple weeks of work (rebuild brakes etc. ) before I can go for a test spin.I've owned many motorcycles over the years,I believe this one will be a keeper.

      Thanks; yours (customer's?) sounds great, much better than most with modified exhaust. They make some beautiful intake noises too but the stock air cleaner housing mutes it a lot.

    Luckily for me I found a 1977 GL1000 in blue with 9500 miles. Someone had attempted to de-rust and 'seal' the fuel tank and completely botched it with large chunks of 'sealer' stuck all over and the screen plugged in the bottom. I went through the brakes, new tires, new tank, cleaned the carbs. I have 1 carb not functioning properly so bought a Randakk's kit to install. The best part, it looks new, with original everything and cost me $500.00! Always wanted one when I bought a new 1977 750 SS, then my roommate bought the GL1000.

    der Le Mans Fahrer hatte keine Chance und ich habe ihm gezeigt, dass die GL das bessere
    Bike war...

    Do you think this would be a good bike for 30+ mile daily commute (each way)? I like to go about 80mph. Sometimes i get traffic so i split lanes unless i take the 50mile trip. So at 80 does the bike feel like its struggling? Force? I might get a goldwing almost exactly like yours 76 faded but it looks complete with floor boards lol. I just want a solid bike and a Honda. Anything to look out for? Parts?

    • @joeturner3645
      @joeturner3645  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It'll happily go 80, but for a long daily commute I'd consider something more modern just for the handling and braking, and a windshield for comfort. I have commuted on mine though, it can be done. This generation of Goldwing is solid and reliable when maintained, but it does take quite a bit of work to get them to that state when they've been neglected for decades. What's the condition of the one you're considering? If it's been sitting for years like mine was I'd count on replacing the timing belt and tensioners, carb rebuild (with a Randakk kit), new fuel pump and fuel hoses, clean and flush the fuel tank, brake system rebuild and new brake hoses, new battery, new tires and tubes, fork seals, steering head bearings, and all new fluids and filters. Aftermarket parts are available but most OEM parts are out of production. Some parts can be hard to find, particularly ones that are unique to the GL1000. Forum support is strong, so you can find help there. Here's a ton of info to get you started: www.randakksblog.com/category/honda-gl1000/newowners-gl1000/

    If the gas station you get your fuel from uses a single hose for various grades of fuel including non-ethanol fuel, the mixing manifold holds quite a bit of ethanol fuel before it starts to dispense ethanol free fuel. You would either need to find a station where they use a separate hose for each grade or you'll need to purge about a half gallon of fuel before filling the bike tank or ethanol free gas can. That should help slow down your frequent carburetor cleaning.

    • @joeturner3645
      @joeturner3645  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most gas stations in California only dispense E10 fuel. Exceptions are rare. These carbs have behaved much better since I electrolytically cleaned the fuel tank, but the tiny, tiny idle jets still clog easily and the slides are finicky about temperature and humidity. I suspect it would help a lot to ride the bike daily. Sadly it is now in long-term hibernation, and I suspect the fuel system will need a complete rebuild again when it comes out, despite a full tank with fuel stabilizer and drained float bowls.

    • @illiniwood
      @illiniwood ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joeturner3645 If you know you're going to be putting the bike in mothballs for a while, You can get aviation fuel from most mid-sized airports. Aviation fuel is a little higher in octane, but it is 100% ethanol free. If you're concerned with the higher octane, you can add a 32oz can of Trufuel to bring down the octane level to a more normal range. Trufuel is 92% octane, but it's very expensive to use exclusively. With stabilizer added to the aviation fuel and/or Trufuel, you'd get a couple years of worry free storage without having to do a carb teardown.
