Oh. I just wanted to quickly address the issue of Live sound vs. Recorded sound. Different brands of acoustic guitars too sound radically different when recorded in studio than in a live situation. The most notable example is what I call the “Yamaha Paradox”. All the major recording studios that I am familiar with keep a few Yamaha acoustics on hand. For some strange reason, they typically record exceptionally good. Artists will bring in their high-end Taylors, Guilds, Martins, etc., and the engineer will very often ask them to try the studio’s on-hand Yamaha. In almost every case, the Yamaha wins out. Exactly the opposite of how it is in a live situation.

Thanks for pointing these out. Use Rotosound 10's myself so will be picking up some Legacy to try. Did notice if you're getting 3 sets, by the time you add postage your getting close to the same price you can pickup Rotosounds triple pack (the one that comes with a rubbish strap) but for the odd pack or too, definitely worth a punt!

I've used Rotos for nearly 30 years. The Blues are my favourites. However, I have a shedload of D'Addario in my tool boxes at the moment as I got them on special. Must look up those Legacy strings. But I bet they don't do heavy 10s.
Have used Strings Direct since they started. I have a feeling they may have morphed out of the once much loved Holiday Music, but I could be wrong on that. But I seem to remember they also they also specialised in Lefties.

I have used nothing but roto pinks for years now. They are definitely the best on the market. I am really glad to see that other people have the problem with Ernie Ball strings unraveling from the ball end as well this always seems to happen my guitars (I thought it was just a problem with the way I was stringing up or something),but Ernie Ball strings always seem to go at the LONG LIVE ROTOSOUND! They are the king of strings!

They're 💯 the same strings I'm a rotosound guy through and through they're the best strings. Although the legacy strings are £1ish cheaper by the time you pay postage it's the same on two packs anyway.
I get my roto 3 packs with a free crap strap on Amazon for £12-15 depending on deals with guaranteed next day delivery. Thanks for the info through, I was going to try legacy but it seems I needn't bother.

I do know that they do the same thing here in the States, but I'd be lying if I named names. I truly don't know which manufacture them and which are re-labeled, but I have played Ernie Ball for years and they are pretty much the cheapest at any place you stop in to grab them at about $5 US. Most cost more than that, and I think most know Ernie Ball is a decent string. Since they are the cheapest typically, I would assume that they are producing them and others may be re-branding, but again, don't really know.

There's only so many places strings can be made Dave. Tube's are the same way where companies brand the same tube to their company logo and charge a premium for the privilege. Personally I don't really care about strings, I just buy what's cheap. I used to buy the GFS 12 packs and just chuck a box in with a parts order. They sounded fine, but being paper wrapped tended to absorb water and rust a little if you didn't use them in a timely manner. Now I just buy 10 packs of DiAdarrios (works out at about $5AU a pack). But I've got a few cheaper sets I wanted to try out when I get the chance (Orphee's, Caye and Diffuser). When I change strings I'll generally put a set of DiAdarrios on and if I break a string I'll just split the cheap sets out into inividual strings as replacements.

Legacy could be Strings Direct own brand made by Rotosound. May also be strung on "British" brand guitars like Vintage, Encore, etc for all we know!
I recall articles/interviews about USA strings (could have been Dean Markley or D'Addario) and it was said which other brands were made in same factories (can't remember if they said they used different types/quality materials though). But I've stuck with D'Addario XLs for 30+ years as they were the best sounding to me and value for money at the time.
I've tried a few different sets on bass too (it's what I play live) and found Rotosound Swing Bass to sound the best, though Picato (another British brand) sound virtually the same and cost less, as do Rotosound Rotobass (what they may lack on sound they make up for on price and last longer too!). I quite like Fender strings on bass, but not actually bought enough to decide how good they are by comparrison, and never tried D'Addarios on bass.
I recently bought Harley Benton flats (or are they tapewound, I can't remember) and will use them when the band starts rehearsing in a few weeks. Looking forward to trying them as they shouldn't be as bright, which isn't actually a problem. The fact that I don't use the D and G strings as much on bass as E and A means they can be far too bright as the thicker strings start growing full with use/age.

I hear this a lot and I’m sure there is indeed SOME truth to it. Besides some “giveaways” like the twisting at the ball end. My biggest issue is that whilst many strings may be from the same manufacturer, and whilst the Rotosounds and Legacys might sound the same, clearly most of the many brands out there sound radically different.

You are paying for the name, and the packaging, basically!!!
Rotosounds have a "name" (going back over 50+ years, I think), so they seem to be charging extra for their "legacy" (but ironically that's what the cheaper strings are called!).
I think this happens all the time, and goes back years. Look at the old "Mullard" tubes. They were made at a factory in Blackburn. However, they made tubes for God knows who, all over europe, for decades, with another manufacturer's stamp on them.
I know for a fact that you can get Tungsram branded tubes, that were supposed to be made in Hungary (the 'real" ones were, and were very good), with a different stamp, and they were actually a Mullard tube, made to the same specs as their own ones, in Blackburn!! Lots of Companies make stuff for others, we just don't get to hear about it.
Also, look at the "Groove Tube" scam. They are basically using someone else's tubes (they are only made in 3 places now, either China, Russia, or the Czech Republic), supposedly the "best graded" of each, putting their name on them, and charging a lot more money!! There seems to a lot of people "hearing with their eyes"!!
I personally can't afford these prices, so I buy the Czech made "JJ" tubes, with their own brand on them, and I like them the best, and they just so happen to be the cheapest, as well. I can't afford to be "ripped off", prices are high enough in the UK as it is, and even if I had the extra money to spend, why the hell would I waste money, when I can buy stuff cheaper, elsewhere?!!
Well done for pointing this, out, I just hope you don't get any grief from Rotosound, because they probably won't like people knowing that you can get the exact same set of strings in a different pack for £1.50 cheaper, but then it's their fault for doing it, in the first place!!!!

    Hi Dave
Hope you are bearing up - my amp has been great since you sorted it out
I know you said "NO!" to Harley Benton, however...
They do Value Strings - £1.33 a pack depending on exc rates. If you bulk buy they get even cheaper. they do 10s and 11s
    www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_valuestrings_011_e_guitar_set.htm
I bought some of each gauge to test in 2018. not felt any significant issues with quality compared to rotosound, d'addario, ernie ball. I don't gig so still have a load left
the only thing is that when you unpack them, they are not straight, they keep the curve of how they were packed. not a huge issue, just can be a pain getting them through a trem or through body first time

I love how superficial and uninformed this video is. Looks, wrap and length and POW, it's the same string! 😂😂😂 I'm sure you're aware many factories do many products for companies - per different levels of quality, budget and intended selling price. That's how one factory makes 3 quality levels of guitars, amp tubes etc.
A string made in the same factory is not automatically "the same string" just because of ferrule color and wrap, the material and construction of the core and the coating metal are thr stuff you don't see on the camera but you clearly hear and, sorry man, but this video doesn't exactly fill me with confidence that you telling me they sound "the same" is remotely true.

    • @DaveBarlowGuitar
      @DaveBarlowGuitar  ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah but I gig 90 times a year and I use both types of string, they are the same, sometimes people mistake me for being like 99.9% of guitar TH-camrs on here who are just trying to sell you and make money, I am not one of these people, I only tell you about stuff I have tested and use myself.
