I bought a Chibson back in 2015 out of curiosity. I own several real Les Paul’s. I did the typical upgrades, changed the tuners, bridge, tail piece, put Seymour Duncan pick ups in it. The pick ups that came in it said Epiphone on them. Couple of frets needed filing and crowning. The thing plays awesome. I had it in storage for several years. Pulled it out and it was still in tune! I love it.

I got a Chibson Greeny this past year & also bought the $1500 Epiphone Greeny, & honestly, I like my $239 Chibson better. It’s reliced pretty heavy, but does not have any check marks. The finish is also nitro. The neck & back/sides are more red, & it has very well done fret nibs. Like yours, the routing & the binding is super neat & clean. The color of the binding is very close to real Gibson binding, having that slight pinkish/orangish hue in the cream. The neck is super thin, unlike my Epiphone Greeny. It’s fairly light, maybe 7 lbs, compared to the heavy 9-10 lbs Epiphone Greeny. I changed the tuners, pickups, caps, pots & knobs. I added knob pointers & a real Gibson trussrod cover. The nut, switch, bridge, tailpiece & jack were fine, so I left them. It needed really no fretwork. Now it smokes, is a serious player, & is my go to. My Epiphone Greeny hangs on my wall lol

The reason why Greeny sounded the way it did is because he had it repaired back in the day and instead of wiring it parallel like Gibson does,he wired it (by mistake) series.

    • @bradt.3555
      @bradt.3555 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It was still in parallel, the magnet in one pu was flipped making them electrically out of phase. It had nothing to do with the pu being turned around. That will sound slightly different but does not put them out of phase. With the old braided wire to put them in series requires extensive re wiring and the braided shield on one pu has to be used as the "hot" wire.

Hey Dave, How much did it weigh? Did it have a maple cap? Is the gibson logo a decal? Did it play out of phase in the middle position? Is it really a nitro finish?

The pick ups in the Chibsons sound exactly like the original PAF’s that people are now spending hundreds of pounds on for boutique replicas.

Microphonics are not the only characteristic original PAFs had. They also sounded nothing like modern humbuckers. A "period" Les Paul would essentially sound like a beefier Telecaster and many tele players like Jimmy Page started using them maybe for that reason.

I'd be interested in buying one of these....to be honest I'd be happy if is didn't say Gibson but I like the idea of picking up a fairly reasonable copy at a good price. The Epiphone Greenie is getting into Gibson prices. As always, I'm hesitant because of the weight issue of Les Pauls ....some are absolute boat anchors and no fun to play standing up.

I did not find the guitar I was looking for but the Lp styled guitar caught my attention so, the next morning when it was still available, I immediately purchased it & Man am I GLAD I DID! 1 knock against it- it does not have the thumb wheels & it has metal tuners rather then the tuners on a real deal Lp but hey, I can easily upgrade em if ever needed. I've noticed the name Bullstar Bullfighter sb series lp stle sunburst ms-lp (red). Hi Dave. Turning the pick-up round doesn’t achieve the out of phase sound. Peter, famously, had the (failed) neck pickup rewound at Sound City, or somewhere, in the ‘60s. The ‘tech’(?) wound it ‘the wrong way’ - the fact he put it back upside down, was incidental.
So, to get the ‘out of phase’ sound the pick-up must be MADE reversed… even Vintage - I owned one momentarily - manage to do that, Trev Wilkinson’s Asian people wound, or wind, the neck pickups for them specially.

I have Gotoh locking tuners on my 335 and it cured the staying in tune problem. Every Gibson I've ever owned have an intonation problem, fourth string 7th fret. You just have to play through it. After a while, your muscle memory adjusts for it automatically. Tone and pitch come from the player. Stevie Ray plugged into Robert Wares Accoustic base amp at an Oak Cliff reunion and sounded exactly the same as he did through his own Black Face Super Reverb. You boutique folks need to worry more about what you bring than the dead-wood and wire you covet so much. I borrowed Dead-Wood and Wire from my friend Buddy Whittington.

There's a lot of hate out there for these guitars but just take them for what they are. Affordable, playable, aesthetically pleasing, whichever category is important to you. I know the logo thing is "contentious" but that seems to be a problem mainly for our American counterparts who all seem to have bought one (for investigative reasons, obviously 😊).
I'm not sure that Gibson is going to lose many sales due to the existence of these instruments, not really the same customer base I'd have thought.
Equally unsure if China is going to lose any sleep over any copyright infringement concerns, probably not high on their list of global concerns at the moment.

@@whyis45stillalive I’ve seen a lot of Kirk live fails since he switched guitar. He used to play strictly ESPs and now he has a heavy brick of a Les Paul to deal with, that also probably has a thick ol’ neck. I don’t understand why he even went this route, would have made more sense if he bought the Frankenstrat.

I'd rather buy a Chibson than a genuine Gibson because the build quality is so inconsistent/poor, it not longer matters who makes them. Yes, it's illegal and shady, but if Gibson actually made premium guitars that matched the price they are charging, it wouldn't be so much of an problem. Which other manufacturers guitars can be sucessfully copied on the same level of Gibson? I've owned about 15 different SG style guitars over the years including Gibson, Epiphone, Tokai, Vintage, ESP LTD and Burny. I still own all of them apart from the Gibsons.

Screws for pu rings are way diff than what Gibson uses. Listen to the switch and look at it you can tell it's the wrong kind, bridge wrong pu rings wrong shape n color and most of all your buying stolen property. Why are so many ok with stealing?

I just got an Ace Frehely blue sparkle Chibson last week. The frets are perfect. They used ball end frets. It also has large pots in it.

I have bought a couple fenders they play good better than most of the American stuff until I got into my real custom shops. The tuners were cheap on the haggard copy but 50 dollars fixed that

Why are showing us the headstock it's not a " Gibson " it's a FAKE , FRAUD. If you want a good Chinese guitar buy a Eastman , to many Fakes being sold as the real thing .They are crap if you know anything about guitars .

I have this same guitar and after a fret level and polish it stands proudly next to my Gibson standard at 10% the cost. So yes there is a couple hours of luthier work involved so you can add another $100 to the price and you're still way under the cost of an authentic Gibson.
