When you plug the device to tour computer. Is it just for power or did you install something in the computer?
It's interesting that nobody is asking about the Ledger company itself. You actually give this company 100% trust, it's another risk too.
That is my concern. What if every 100 Leger Nanos they sell they use the same 20 words. I am waiting on my ledger in the mail. Just trying to get some background info on Ledger before I put all my crypto in the device.
Your concern is unlikely in my opinion.
What if their device is attackable? And what if they do it on purpose?
They may have good intentions, but I wanna make clear that those risks exist.
I actually also ordered one just because of the trend and because I do not own much Bitcoin atm.
Open source hardware and software could solve this problem.

Travis Kelley I got my ledger nano the other day before ltc blew up. It seems legit so far. You have to use google chrome to download the wallets, but I am satisfied.

I tried to install the ledger app in my new mac but the app cannot connect to my walllet device. I really don’t want to do anything stupid to my wallet. Can you please help.

I used to trust Ledger a lot because I thought all my electronic-coin wallets (such as Bitcoin) would remain INSIDE my Nano S, but after reading this article in their website my trust declined:
''The secure element in the device is limited in memory space and only 4-5 apps (Nano S).
If you want to use more, simply uninstall temporarily one app and replace it with another.
All apps can be installed/uninstalled without any risk to lose your funds.''
What I understand from this article is that my wallets are all ''out there'', not just on my Nano-S....

GUYS!! I see a lot comments asking questions about extensions etc.. Keep in mind this is 2017 I think there are some updates to the system. Here's what I did and it WORKED flawlessly. "I actually downloaded the Nano App on my computer (Mac) so it's not on the web (no extension needed). You can download the Nano Application right off their website (ledger.com). And I did the same with NEO (downloaded the wallet on my computer). Then you simply open the NEO application - and login to the NEO app using the Ledger (it's one of the options when logging in - you can pick login with ledger). This way you don't need to use any extensions. Everything's done through secure wallets you download directly off their legitimate sites on your computer."

It is a great product, as of now the only annoying features are the limited storage. Not all the Ledger apps can be installed at the same time because of it. The other annoyance are the Chrome apps. I wish they would make a single wallet application, instead of a chrome app per cryptocurrency

You stated the device can receive Bitcoins to the ledger when it's not connected to the PC, does it have built-in network capabilities or does it sync once it's reconnected to the PC? Thanks
the ledger nano is basically just a highly secure private key storage, you don't need it to be plugged in to recieve any crypto. When you receive any crypto, it goes to your public address. When you DO want to send crypto, you need to have it plugged into a computer with the app, as it holds ur private keys.
@@williamdodde9641 they are on the blockchain, which is a public ledger. It is online. Everyone can see the transactions and amount of coins in a address, but only the person with a private key can move coins from their address to another.

you have the option '' recover '' and you need to put all the questions
The phrases are a seed for the private key, so if you have the phrases then you have the key

Yes, you can, but the Nano S only allows 4 coins on it at a time. As far as I know, the amounts are independent of the number of different coins it accepts.

I don't understand the restore part. If you lose your ledger and get a new one and you restore using the 24 words. How do you retrieve your coins? The words were assigned to you before you put any coins on it.
jas gag this i wonder too. Also what if someone randomly guesses my 20 words or your 20 words? Will he get my wallet money?

Stefano Cuter That’s why I asked the question...I would like to understand how the ledger works before getting one (when/if the time comes).
Your 'coins' are not actual units or things, they are just an entry in a database, linked to your private key. The 24 words ARE a variant of your private key, that need to be entered into a compatible device, and that restores your private key in that device. Essentially, the 24 words are a backup copy of your private key, so you have to be even more careful with the 24 words than the Nano S itself, because anyone can spend your money, if they have the words in the right order !

Even if they wanted to, the company could not steal private keys. They are created and stored on the device and the device alone. :) Your coins are safe as long as you follow best practices with your recovery phrase and usage of your device.

What happens if the Ledger Nano S or any other Hardware wallet ,malfunctions short out burns up after your Crypto Coins are downloaded to the device?

The ledger nano is awesome but it only supports a few coins. Is there any hardware wallet out there where I can store different alt coins on? I want to store several tokens in this way.

If you plan on HODLing those other coins that the Ledger doesn't support you could just create a paper wallet for them.
Thing is, i installed 2 extra wallets besides BTC and ETH, then was going to install another one and it said memory was full.. Sucks

what happens if you lose the recovery phrases sheet of paper?
the paper serves as a backup to your ledger. if you lose it you won't be able to restore your ledger if something goes wrong.

Use a mnemonic story to connect the words. You can write it down in such a way that you will recall the words. For example, 1 is bun, 2 is shoe, etc.. Say your first word is chicken, second is blue. "I ate a chicken hot dog while wearing my blue shoes" (3=tree, recovery word=safe) "while I was walking to the safe tree"
yeah but how would I remember all those words and know which ones related to a number? I might think dog is 1 and shoes is 2.
You use the 1 bun rhyming scheme to know the number position and the other word is the recovery word. The example above he's using Hot Dog (bun) as 1 and the first word is chicken. If you make the story that goes with it crazy and vivid it sticks in your head. You are encoding nonsense into something that your brain can visualise. It's how Memory Palaces work. The one/bun two/shoe etc is a peg word to attach your code word and give it order and meaning. Because you know that one=bun you don't need to create the story in order as the peg word gives you the code to the place it in the correct order. Hope that helps.

You can pay from your cellphone APP. You would need to connect the ledger to your cellphone though. For that, you can get an adaptor.

Road to the 2 Comma Club always transfer from Coinbase to gdax then send. Gdax is a sister site to Coinbase but no fees to move BTC/ETH/LTC/USD/and I think BCC

I hate my Ledger. It's so user-unfriendly. I can't even get past my password now. It's just sitting there waiting for a 5th number.
We recommend you that you must have the Private Key fo your wallet, you can generate a paper wallet through Myfreewallet.net, just generate a paper wallet in that website, print the Private key and save in a secure place, if you do that, you will be the owner for your coins.

But I Travel and Now Customs goes Trough my Bags with a Fine Tooth comb and Xrays my Bags and reads my emails on my Cel Phone, so how do you want me to Keep a Secret Word List from ever being Seen. If US Customs would find a Ledger on Me they would want to know why Buy Bitcoins? How many Bitcoins do I Have in my Wallet etc.... It would be a Nightmare. what if you memorized the 24 words?
Take your diary, write the words on separate pages, write them in a story, mark them in one or more books. I don't know, be creative if you really think they would know what a list of 24 random words would mean. If you really don't want to take the device itself with you through the checks but you somehow desperately need your cryptos at your destination AND you can't use alternatives like a browser- or even a paper-wallet (at this point it does begin to sound a bit shady), you can always mail the thing to your destination and recover your wallet there. Think a little and be creative

"Crypto Currencies don't care who you are" - I just tried to open an account on Coinbase and it wants everything including my driving license / passport / social security number etc. They also pass everyone's details to the IRS / Government Tax departments. Why is crypto currency touted as being anonymous???
