      Rest in Peace ART Neville. AKA "Poppa Funk", he was the organ player for The Meters, prior to starting the Neville Brothers. If you are not familiar with The Meters, I highly suggest you check them out. There is a legendary LIVE performance they did for Paul & Linda McCartney's wedding reception on The Queen Mary in '76. Rhino issued it on CD ages ago. There is also a limited edition vinyl pressing on purple wax out now. The first 3 Meters LP's on Josie are primarily funk instrumentals. "Cabbage Alley", "Rejuvenation" & "Fire on the Bayou" on Reprise are considered their masterpieces. Allen Toussaint produced them all. Leo Nocentelli smokes on guitar and Zigaboo (drummer) sings some of the sickest funk you will ever hear. "Africa" , "Just Kissed My Baby", etc. The Meters will change you life.

    Woah. I’ve heard this performance before. I had a Deadhead roommate many years ago. I never really got the music. It just seemed kind of sloppy and jangly and amorphous. That roommate had a tape of this show (and many others) and he was listening to it one afternoon when I came home. He usually offered to switch the music when I came back - he was a considerate guy. But that one day I decided I didn’t care, so the tape kept rolling. After a few minutes of ignoring that hippy music like I usually did, something weird happened. It felt like the music crept up on me and started to pull me in. I was forced to pay attention, just as they were getting to this part of the show and the Iko-Iko. But I felt like l was listening to the Dead with a fresh set of ears - really hearing GD music for the first time. I had listened many times before without understanding, but suddenly I was GETTING IT (btw, I was completely sober that day). I abruptly understood that it didn’t matter if it wasn’t polished (and this performance is pretty messy, from an objective standpoint. They obviously hadn’t rehearsed with the Nevilles.) That wasn’t the goal. The real point was the great energy from spontaneous collaboration of 2 great bands. They didn’t even seem to know how to play the Harry Belafonte song, but the interplay between Jerry and Brent sounded incredibly inspired, with lovely, twisting intricate lines, segueing without stop into Do You Wanna Dance. It popped with energy and a rich, suffusing warmth……I could hear different dimensions and layers within the music that I had never heard before - something that could never be captured on an album or through a strictly scripted arrangement. I was stunned and thrilled by what I was hearing. Jerry’s guitar was sublime. And thus, this was the moment I was converted into a Deadhead. In the decades since that day, I’ve listened to hundreds of Dead shows (and even got to attend a few - though regretfully Brent died a few months before my first - I also saw the Meters once). I haven’t had a chance to revisit this one for a while. Compared to the rest of their amazing career, this is a fun, but mostly unremarkable performance. But it will always have a special place in my heart. P.S. RIP Art Neville.

    I've not seen another guitarist go toe to toe with Jerry ever. The Neville's guitarist here is like he's invisible, he has no strength in his playing to even match Jerry's tone in strength and even if he did it's obvious that he's not laying down much here. But even Pete Townsend couldn't manage to 'fit in' while sitting in on 3/28/81 Germany. He was just doing basic strumming and his attempts at playing a lead was sad in comparison but Jerry was just so damn strong a player it was a monumental challenge.

    • @profoffunk
      @profoffunk ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I spoke to Brian Stolz years after this show and he told me that he wasn't even plugged into the soundboard but rather into a small Fender amp they had laying around backstage. Brian is no slouch on the guitar. You should check out some of his solo work or any of his performances with the Funky Meters...

    • @dlparker
      @dlparker ปีที่แล้ว

      @@profoffunk The mix was about as bad as the music was good. For instance, I could barely hear Cyril when he was singing the lead part and really not at all when he was singing harmonies. Aaron was pretty hard to hear as well. That's a real shame.
