Unfortunately demand exceeds supply. Resident, or non resident, unless it's a guided hunt on private lands, most people will be putting in for a tag like this for 20 years. If it's a guided hunt on private lands like I think this one was, your probably paying 4 to 6 grand. Ballpark figure on that, I've never looked into it, I just know it's really freaking expensive.

The most peaceful time on a hunt is sitting in your spot watching the sun come up. It is so quiet and feels so good to escape the rat race. I always enjoyed hunting even when I didn't get anything.

That’s because these bulls are damn near farmed. After I heard “they are really mature bulls” I knew they have been watching and tracking these bulls probably on trail cams and watching high volume trails for weeks or months just waiting to put someone on the bulls trail to harvest him. Definitely hunting for sure, but apparently his definition of hunting and mine are different. You had to hunt for five seasons and earn that kill, you did it the right way and how it should be done.

They're quite a bit 'larger' than you think they are from seeing them in a photograph. Seeing them up close, where you have a visual reference to their size and height is truly amazing. I live close to the Cascades, in between Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier where elk, bear, cougar, deer, beaver abound.

In Sweden we do not have these large deer you guys call elk, we have the other kind called elk that you guys call moose - and they are even larger. And seemingly more uneven terrain, lots of more trees, so it is a bit of challenge to manually drag it out of the forest back to a gathering point for a further transportation. But yes, even they are far larger than people think from a photo or a view from far away. Lots of kilo to handle.

This is a great perspective on something that I was born in to.
I grew up in a family of hunter's. There was no option when I was old enough to hunt. I saw dead elk and deer brought home by Dad and my brothers since about 1970. We never took time off to hunt, weekends and after school or work filled the freezer. The part of north Idaho's terrain where I grew up was quite similar to this video. I married and moved to western Montana in 82 and have lived here ever since. Until about 1997 I was the guy that killed an elk nearly every year with a cow tag or legal bull. Didn't matter as I had a family to feed. Several elk were killed in ground steep enough I was able to get them from the ridge top to the flat ground and then go get "help" for the final drag or pack. My wife loved to hunt and we spent many years together until bad health hit her and she passed in 2021. My son and grandson still make me go out but my mountain climbing days are over. I guess my rambling here is that life is filled with many hunts. Success is low for the common hunter these days, so the experience is the payoff. ''Elk tag soup" sucks...but venison still tastes great!

One thing I sense is true is City dwellers are almost completely detached from where their food comes from - If you ask; they'll problably say - the grocery store; as it they grow the food or raise the animals there. In the Army; I learned a lesson; they had us starving; and they gave us a live chicken; we had to kill it to eat. I am also old enough to realize vegitables and fruits are seasonal. Veggitarians say they think they are green; but they require a world wide transport and green house system to even give them a chance not to starve the way our ancestors did during winter. Maybe starving a bit, and having to go hunt to put food in their mouths would teach them.

@donaldyoung5473 I agree with you completely. We are both hunters. I'm 50 years old and still have a set of spikes that are only 3 inches long from when I was 16. I collect antlers that are from wild deer and not one of those huge antlers I have would I trade for any antler from a deer I've killed. It's memories my friend, a visual recollection you can put in your hands like a photo, but also a tangible materiel of the time. You get it I'm sure. Love to you and I hope your family is blessed this night.

Living in Utah for 15 years, several of which were in the shadow of Mt Nebo, I saw many elk. Sadly, I never hunted, although I had a tag the year I moved to Tennessee, but I didn't get to fill it because of work obligations. I enjoyed this video very much, tinged with a little jealousy.

next, try bow hunting whitetail in the winter. instead of hundreds of yards, you have to be within 30. one slight noise or movement, and they're gone. plus you have to be lucky enough to have a clear broadside shot. then you have to wait... then the hunt really begins following tracks and hopefully some blood.

Welcome to the hunt Counselor! That feeling of the hunt, the stalk, smell of the animals, the electricity, the surge of energy, the synchronization of your heat and your breath, and finger. The drive to succeed and the ability to choose to harvest or not. It is not about the antlers, the elk tusks, hide or meat. It is the hunt. The hunt is in our DNA, nothing more exhilarating!

Great video, it's good to hear the intricacies spoken of, and the way hunters revere the animals in a way that is not generally known to non-hunters. Though you didn't cover much of the actual hunt, you gave a window into the reality that is good for people that wouldn't watch a long hunting video.

I just did my first hunt last fall in the Valle Vidal, and bagged an elk on the last day. I had my modest share of accomplishments like graduating college or getting promoted at work, but nothing made me feel more accomplished and alive than taking that 5x6er from 400 yards away. I'm a new man after that moment and I can't wait to get back out there to do it again.
