They can definitely be a good way to counter players' tendencies to sacrifice fun on the altar on efficiency, and get them out of being too complacent. It only works if the game lets you experiment and is just generally fun to play though, of course! Devil May Cry 2 has a style meter but it's just mostly boring to play and doesn't really incentivise anything more than shooting and the occasional simple melee combos, especially during some of the boss battles.
