I just slapped myself the forehead while watching your video! Thank you for making it. I’ve owned a chimney charcoal starter for many, many years, but never thought of turning it into a hobo stove. I like the fork-handle hack too. Nicely done.
" If you put a stainless steel steamer insert ( opens like a flower) in the bottom you can use wood pellets, which give a clean, controlled burn. Also keeps ashes from falling out and reduces airflow, which is only needed for charcoal burns. The fork/ handle idea is genius. "
I would modify it with kanthal wire handle th-cam.com/users/shortsg_m2LNOg5zA?feature=share With the fire going flat out you'll still be able to pick up the fire and transfer it to a snuff pot
Amazing. Never thought of using mine like that. Usually use mine to start charcoal for my griles. The things we learn. Ol dogs learn new tricks. 83 year old camper.
Great idea! I was thinking to get me one of those charcoal starters, too, having the same idea as you. But due to the pandemic I was not able to get to the hardware store until now. So it still is the "huge dogfood can with handcut holes" - stove until I can make it. The dogfood can is working great, btw. Stay safe everybody, and stay blessed. Greetings from Germany!

Modification suggestion: Don't cut a fuel feed window; it is getting too much air now. Instead, make another fork-handle on the top griddle (wire grid), and lift it when needed and drop wood into the top. As said previously, it is getting too much air and burning the fuel too fast. Close "some" of the air holes or create a metal slide that covers the holes after the fire is well established.
Brilliant for camping out back or from a vehicle. For bigger pots you could always knock up a tripod. Good gauge metal too, well worth the price and an excellent re-purpose.
I do recommend you get a cheap pizza pan from the dollar store to put underneath the chimney so you don't catch the grass on fire. Especially in a dry season. Thanks for the tip. I've been looking at my fire starter thinking I wish I could use It to cook! Yup! Will try it soon. Also, going to try my gas top grate over it to hold the pan and then I could drop wood in from the top.

@@MadDogSurvival sorry i didnt mention it before but weber makes their normal sized one and they also make a smaller one. Depending, i think the smaller one may work out better.
I know playing with the fire rods is the hot thing to do to look outdoorsy but every boyscout learns cottonball with a little vaseline will start with 1 match without all the flying sparks and burns for several mins to start fire easy even a little damp kindling.
@@MadDogSurvival im not throughing of on you or your " military training" but have you yourself not noticed that a lot of teaching on u tube i have a fire stick I'm all set. Hell not saying you cant start a fire with one with wet stuff i still like having the easiest way available. Im sure everyone with military training can use a bow drill to but a bic lighter sure is easier.
Agreed easy is best but not always the most long term sustainable! When your matches and cotton balls run out what then? I can light fire by bow/ hand drill as I’ve shown in my videos as well as several other methods, all I’m saying is easy is fine but don’t put all your eggs in one basket! Thanks again for your watching and commenting 👍🏽 Best wishes
P.s if you like easy fire starters check out my mad dog jewels! Really easy and burn up to an easy 7-8 minutes! And when wet ! 😉👍🏽 My eBay link is in the about section!
Thanks for responding i actually though you were talking about lighting a hobo stove didnt realize my commit about everyone using a fire stick would bother you as i just said my idea work well if your tinder was damp and is easier than the rod. Last time i checked those rods use up to so back atcha what do you do then. Geez
Yep ... have well understand my friend! I’ve served 12 years with the British MOD .. try your lighter in -0.25.c or wet.... ! I’ve used bic lighters in all conditions, and they are not always the best option! ! Ferro rods will always perform in all conditions! ... prove me wrong! Best wishes!

The zinc on the outside of that oxidizes away .. If you breathe it you will get a right sore head
Yep best to only use outdoors and not breathe in the fumes

@@MadDogSurvival sorry i didnt mention it before but weber makes their normal sized one and they also make a smaller one. Depending, i think the smaller one may work out better.

HUMAN'S ARE LIMITLESS WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD,.... THEY CAN ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO COOK IT,.......AND THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH EXPERIMENTING.
Agreed brother! And thank you 👍🏽👍🏽😎 best wishes
I know playing with the fire rods is the hot thing to do to look outdoorsy but every boyscout learns cottonball with a little vaseline will start with 1 match without all the flying sparks and burns for several mins to start fire easy even a little damp kindling.
And as 12 years of military training taught me that when your Boy Scout matches are wet the ferro rod will still work! Best wishes
Geez
I've already made one of these fucking things I would feel like a damn fool if I went out and actually bought one
Ok thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! Best wishes
@@MadDogSurvival and good day to you sir
I guess the people making these film clips never heard of a bic lighter.
Yep ... have well understand my friend! I’ve served 12 years with the British MOD .. try your lighter in -0.25.c or wet.... ! I’ve used bic lighters in all conditions, and they are not always the best option! ! Ferro rods will always perform in all conditions! ... prove me wrong! Best wishes!
@@MadDogSurvival I live in South Texas. Not to worried about -0.25.c. and not real worried about wet.
Hope your gas doesn’t leak or run out then! Lol... I’d carry both! Anyway no hard feelings mate best wishes 👍🏽
I just can't believe you got a Thumbs down on this...1 thumbs down proves 1 thing...1 person just ain't creative...lol.
Thanks my friend! Well I guess I can’t please all the people all the time! lol..... I honestly don’t let the thumbs downers bother me one bit, I just think it’s great that we live in a place where we can have our different opinions and that’s what’s important to me. I appreciate your support and kind words my friend 👌🏽 Best wishes 👍🏽👍🏽😎
easy being a hobo when u r a millionaire mate
Would imagine it is, this is a bushcraft term for a homemade stove really mate, so used in a different context. Best wishes mate 👍🏽👍🏽😎
