How To Build A David West Style Of Hobo Stove

  • My stoves are fast starting and very hot burning because of their strong updrafts. My design has an elevated perforated floor, extra vent holes top and bottom, and a large feed hole that can be oriented towards the wind.
No, this stove is not a fuel saver, but it will make damp wood burn well, boil water quickly, and last for years if kept out of the rain.

A new stove for a new year. Time to break it in with coffee, eggs, and bacon. I really need to build a couple of these.

Hey David ! I built a hobo stove a while back and it worked well, however if I wanted to cook burgers or a steak I needed more surface area. I salvaged an old car tire rim, put legs on it, and used some rebar and expanded metal as a fire grate. The rim already had lots of holes for it to draft properly. I made a grate for cooking out of an old round BBQ grill and welded a piece of square tubing to it. With a steel spike driven into the ground I slipped the round grilling grate over it. I had a "T" handle that I could raise and lower the grill with. I can even swing the grill away if I needed to get the food off the fire for a bit. As the fire burns down I can move the grill closer to the fire or up higher if I want a slow cook. Your hobo stove was my inspiration. Thanks! (Rob in Texas)

I have 1 more rust out that I want to replace. That may be a no expanded metal build.

AWESOME as always, I did build my first hobo stove a year ago based upon one of Your videos.
I will try this one as well cause it's not exactly the same and I want to improve. Thank You very much for sharing Your knowledge about fire. Greetings from France ^_^

I’m going to make one, but with a square plate at the bottom so I can have all-thread legs that go from the ground up past the top. The rods will be the pot support as well as the feet. That way I can use a big cast iron pan on it. GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS.

Hello David. Thank you for the video. For several years I lived off the grid and made several variations of these stoves to cook most of my meals outside providing the weather was decent. Now I have it made: electricity, running water, propane, and flush toilets. Life is good!

David, you can often find old car or truck air filters that have expanded steel screens that can be cut out. They are sometimes made of stainless steel and last a long time in a stove.

I built one of your hobo stoves here a while back. But I needed more surface area to cook burgers or a steak. I found an old car rim and with your hobo stove as inspiration I made a portable grill that works great. Thanks David! (Rob in Texas)

Ive got a can that is the same size and am thinking of making one of these stoves. I have everything except the flooring and feed screen. I might be able to use something instead of the expanded metal screen. Thats cool that you use the rust from the old stove to do your fire roll with. Thanks for the instructional and you and Mrs White be good-

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl I bought a roll around magnet from HF to clean up after a remodel job. It works great. They also sell a bar magnet with a hook that I tie a 3 or 4 foot piece of cord to and drag around the area. Amazing what you find. Sometimes, forty or fifty year old nails and hardware.
