He's 71... he gave his all and his brother for Rock n Roll. Now he probably just wants to retire and walk away and live in peace for the next 10-20 years! He's earned it!
Not everybody has the stamina of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
Nor does everyone want too. @@joebeamish
@@MainPrism Most people lack that kind of stamina.
@@joebeamishMick Jagger and Keith Richards don't play drums. Alex VH doesn't play slow motion basic ripped off blues licks or strut around the stage like Tina Turner. So why the comparison?
@@tonyv5202 71 is okay. Slightly weak.
He shared his life with his brother, I can’t imagine what he’s going through. Everyone heals in their own way.
I didn't know he never played with anyone but Eddie. That is really saying something
@@exclamationpointman3852 Neil Peart was the same way. He was in a group or two before Rush, and they got along with another band named Max Webster, but for most of his career, Neil only played behind Alex and Geddy.
And if you watch him playing a beat behind Public Enemy during their RRHF ceremony, you can see why.
Some musicians know what they know, and act accordingly.
2020 was such a miserable year.

GOD bless you. GOD have mercy on those who passed that year.
Its bizarre to me how everyone talks about older musicians as if they are disappointing everyone by calling it quits. Hes 71. He has every right to stop. Drumming is tough on the body. He lost his brother and best friend. He can stop and enjoy life if he wants. No explanation needed. Dont need the hysteria and dramatics. First Sammy saying he has a stick up his ass. Now Mike even acting like its some sad pathetic situation. He just got old and his #1 teammate died. Leave him alone. He owes us nothing. He music will always live on.
Now go listen to Outta Love, Van Halen 2, and remind yourself how lucky we were.
Let's not forget, he's pretty much deaf at this point...
And for what it's worth, drummers Phil Ehart (Kansas) and Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) are around the same age as Alex and have both had recent medical emergencies that require extended recovery times.
I didnt look at it as disappointment but tremendous sadness. My thought as if true I hope alex finds the peace he needs and deserves. If you listened to other interviews from sammy and michael alex was a bit standoffish years before Eddie passed and those 2 continued to work on. Hopefully everyone comes to that peace.
I sold my kit when I was getting arthritis and can't even hold a glass of water without dropping sometimes
Well put brother
I participated in the auction, and I am the very proud owner of a set of his drum sticks that he used in the 1990s. They will be framed and hung on a prominent wall in my home.
🤟
Congratulations.
That frame better be fireproofed!
That's awesome man congrats!!!
Dark days will do a number on all of us. As a musician, I've experienced the same thing. Got divorced, threw all of my compositions away (literally in the trash can), sold all of my equipment, etc. completely walked away from a life-long career. I didn't play my axe or even listen to music for 5 years, couldn't do it. But now, I've slowly gotten back into it and I love it. I've re-connected and it's better than ever. -- It wouldn't surprise me at all if Alex Van Halen turns a corner at some point. Welcome to life. It happens.
Same thing happened to me. After a death of the closest person in my life I sold all my gear, my house, everything, and went truck driving. I’m still truckin but trying to find my way back ti music.
I thought about quitting, but it ain't my time yet. I just got rid of a lot of gear. Sometimes someone quits and it's for keeps. This is one of those times for Alex. I doubt that's gonna change. It just looks like a "real wrap". I don't blame him. I respect his choice. Still got some good tunes to listen to anytime ya want tho'.
@@jeffrey3498 Keep your mind and heart open, it very well may come back to you.
Did the same. I'll up you one tho my crazy ex did. My mother bought me a brand new Mexican made Fender Telecaster. After a fight I went to my mom's for a few days because I would not argue or fight with her, which they absolutely hate. When I returned? She sold it in a yard sale for 60 bucks.
@@johnisouth6636 I hear you brother. You up-ed me on that one!
Don't blame Alex any bit, thanks to him for the great music, and his brother. Peace be unto him.
Alex lost his brother and played with probably the best rock guitar player ever...thanks for the the music Alex
it's seems such a waste but he owes us nothing
MUCH RESPECT!!! All these other 99.999% of band members ALWAYS chasing the last penny....God Bless him and his family. Family 1st than making $$$.
well said
He is not donating his gear, he is selling it to the highest bidder ;)
You cannot take care of your family without money.
Love Alex so much let him grieve in his own time and just understand. God bless you.❤😮
Dude, Sammy and Michael are two legends just having a blast living life to the fullest playing music they love for people who love their music at pretty much small venues. Tell me again how they are raking in the dough? They are an inspiration to keep doing what you love until you can't anymore so sit down and shut up.
Alex Van Halen Amassed So Much Gear Being In Van Halen & Endorsements. The Man Is Unloading & Cleaning House.
That's what it seems like. But even if he calms house, we must accept it.
@@exclamationpointman3852 Whatever!
Sometimes you turn a page and write a new chapter. He also had back problems so he lost the joy, mentally and physically. Pray for Al to find joy in something else, yall.
Everyone needs to realize, he's pretty much did it all. In reality, I've always felt Alex never got the recognition he deserves for being an excellent drummer. Being the engine of the colossal Van Halen machine, he made it interesting, steady, and with a very unique tone. I don't think any other could have filled his shoes; he was as much an indispensable ingredient as the other 3 that made up the greatest Rock and Roll band of their era.
This just reminds me of how old we’ve all gotten. David Lee Roth helped me begin my musical life’s journey. The amount of hours that I have spent listening to these four men is tremendous. I thank them for the memories. ❤
Couldn’t said it any better. Cheers!!!!
My wife is also Dutch Indonesian. Both families came from the Netherlands at almost the same time to the U.S.
Both parents were very good friends. They all were members of the Dutch club Avio in Anaheim,California.
Van Halen played there all the time in the 70s. My Father in law often help book them initially for gigs around Southern California.
Never met them myself but felt they were extended family nonetheless. I was very sad upon hearing Eddie had passed away.
And Alex certainly is devastated beyond being brothers they were just very tight musically and had slightly different personalities.
Alex being the oldest probably feels he would go first. Alex though was a phenomenal drummer. He just wanted Eddie to take the spotlight in my opinion.
I imagine he is selling to end a major chapter in his life and I’ll bet anything he feels Eddie wants him to do this.
Same with me only down in San Diego, I feel very close to the Van Halen’s. My name is almost the same.
Alex is 71 years old. Time has a funny way of slowing you down and draining your energy.
I agree. He's not a kid anymore and deserves as much time to relax as he wants. Why would he need a warehouse full of gear he'll never use. It's much easier for him to liquidate his stuff now then it would be for his family to do it after he's gone.
If Al should ever want to play anywhere, all it would take is a phone call/ text and he could have the instruments he wants, wherever he wants them.
Not Mick ! hahaha.im 71 and slowly giving way, very slowly. Eat right, exercise daily, and life can be very good, but we have to have that discipline, so let’s rock ‘n’ roll!
@@srmurc6zo6’sitting in’ is just as much fun without the responsibility and he can sit in w anyone on the planet i’m sure.
yeah it sucks

If you're a drummer what Alex says at the end here is earnest and sincere. He is not sad but instead happy to share his drums with fans and players alike. He ain't lyin'
We get to that age where we can't do it anymore, so we take an interest in and love to talk to those that still do.
Maybe he's saving alittle creative energy to pass on to the right person or purpose.
In the end it's only stuff and Alex knows this more than anyone. He's done which is ok he deserves a peaceful retirement. Take care Alex much respect.....
Alex Van Halen you are a drumming legend! You have influenced thousands of drummers to get into drumming - I know I was one of them! The drum intro to "Hot for Teacher" was and still is insanely hard to play. I appreciate all you have given to the music industry, and I hope you find peace and tranquility in your new endeavors, what ever they may be.
I look forward to reading your new book - "Brothers"
We will miss your incredible drumming!
Hearing their debut, while in high school, they were so impressive. There hadn’t been any in a while.
He’s been drumming almost his entire life! Mad respect to Alex!! You are a legend, sir!!
It's obvious that Eddie was Alex's muse. I remember the first time I saw Van Halen. They opened for Journey. And as impressed as I was with Eddie being a guitar player myself I was actually more impressed with Alex believe it or not.
A page in history has now been turned. Respect to Alex.
Nothing but love and respect for the greatest rock and roll drummer ever.Genius.
I can fully understand this. My best friend of 40 years died of cancer 2 years ago. I am still struggling with it he was like my own brother. Getting over a loss like a brother is almost impossible. A piece of his heart is just gone and never will return. I hope he doesn't stop playing he is one of the greats right there with Bonham.
I've seen him early on . What a treat it was . Seeing many of the greats he stands tall.
Let him rest in whatever way.
May the rest of your life be blessed.
We love you Alex!! We will definitely miss you.
As disappointed as I am, it's nice to see someone move on when they know the time is right. He waited a few years, considered his options, & you know what, I respect his decision. May he live the rest of his life in piece. We love you Alex & we want you to be happy!
Alex is a true drummer artist
Doing what he needs for him ! Good for him and hope he gets to a good place to enjoy the rest of his life. Hope he has no regrets! And whoever is lucky enough to own a piece of this mans history can ensure his legacy lives on!
Lost my brother who played, and he was my number 1 fan aswell, it hurts and you will never be the same again......................
I'm a long time drummer myself. I learned from my Dad. I lost him in October of 2022 and I haven't played since so I know how he feels.
Sorry for your loss.
Alex still grieving Eddie’s death makes a lot of sense. Also, while grieving, you make poor decisions you end up regretting.
That's exactly what I was thinking,he's grieving and going to regret this move.
@E.C.2 Its been how many years since Ed died? Its not 6 months afterwards. This isn't a rash decision.
@@E.C.2 I'm not so sure that he'll regret it. He's retiring and moving on, and perhaps this is a final stage of his grieving - letting go of 50+ years of making music with his brother. That's a huge chunk of his life, personally and professionally, to say goodbye to. Starting over at 71, tabula rasa.
I've also only ever played with my brother. He passed away 2 1/2 years ago and I also lost my desire to play any more. I do keep a guitar and amp and play in my home but I'll never jam with anyone ever again.
I respect that. Sorry for your loss.
Is that what your brother would want? Honor your brother by doing what he'd want you to do.
I dont ever want to play guitar again either. Your whole life doesn't need to be based around an instrument. Its a rather limited life if you do. So its normal for anyone to quit playing for any reason.
With a nod to George Michael, "I'm never gonna jam again, grieving fingers got no rhythm, I'm never gonna jam again, the way I jammed with you" {sax solo}.
@@raygunsforronnie847 Never nod to George Michael...
I just want him to find his peace.
Things remind and renew. Time does not erase, but dull memories. Sometimes we cling to those things, sometimes we need them to not be around to remind us.
Just, find peace Alex.
Thank You ALEX for all the amazing tours and memories....You guys are the soundtrack of my youth and certainly life...All the best to you and your family
Truly sad...😢❤ Much love for AVH
I totally agree ! You give you life to something , exhaustion , time away from the family , highs and lows. I am younger but also totally exhausted and sometimes you just want peace and quiet. Actually it is great to out all of his gear into the fan universe . It expands the love and awareness
I can really feel for Alex now. At first I was really disappointed in him and thought, how could he? I now realize which I already knew. Alex and Edward were a Team, like glue, they couldn't be separated. He can't play without his brother! They were all they had when they came to the states. I get you now Alex, I'm so sorry for thinking the way I did about you. Have a Great Long Life and Retirement. ❤
Alex didn’t say he was quitting drumming, he just doesn’t need a warehouse of stuff
No one pays attention. It sounded like he is shedding about 20% of his stuff. But everyone is saying he is getting rid of everything he owns down to the last drumstick. It's ridiculous.
@@Rob-dp3vr, yup!🙄👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻👩🏻🦰💜
Judging by what's known about his relationship with his brother, his age and the overall lack of desire (which is understandable), I believe he's definitely calling it quits for good. I saw the website and there's quite a bit of gear up for auction. It's his choice and I don't blame him. I appreciate the years of the music.
Drums take up a 💩ton of space I’m down to two kits and soon I’ll sell them off
Just don’t have the desire
to play anymore, toured the country been in a recording session or a hundred I had fun but rehearsing and dealing with bands at this point doesn’t appeal to me
@@basher5107Give one of the kits to a younger guy who can't afford to buy something like your gear. Just a suggestion.
If it had been Al that went first, Ed would’ve likely done the same. The brothers had a connection like no other.
If I were Alex’s therapist, I’d beg him to do the EVH Celebration Tour. Invite the best EVH players in the world, Phil X, Deraps, Wolf, Vai, Satch, others that can nail it. Michael Anthony for sure, singers that can pull it off, with a couple each fromDLR and Sammy. It would help him heal and see the joy Eddie and he created. Alex, do it!
eddie wrote the drum parts and even played in demos and told and even showed alex how to play specific parts so totally makes sense, same with michael anthony and wolfgang
Garbage
@@caseD5150 Paul did the same thing in the Beatles. Eddie has gone on record that he taught bass parts to Michael Anthony
I can respect how Alex feels he has done enough and this is the time to walk away, ,especially with no motivation.
That unmistakable snare!!
The fact that this tool said "five one five zero" perfectly reveals that he's not a VH fan.
Or that it's half-assed AI narration.

There are performers, actors, writers, and athletes, that stayed in the game well past their time. For whatever his reason may be,it is his decision. Alex: Thank you , your brother, and band mates, for bringing boundless joy to many over your lifetime.
The VERY FIRST time I ever really PLAYED a song on drums, after a month of flailing on my particleboard pressed three piece drumset, was VH's Intruder, the intro song to Pretty Women on Diver Down. Playing along, I felt powerful, the first time of many times I would feel it behind a set, and Alex's playing did it. I even wrote an essay to no one about it.
Wish I could read that.
Love ya, Al! Thanks for everything.
losing someone we love is never easy!! I would think just my opinion is Alex is in a very dark place ! I pray he will be ok. i have never lost a brother and i have 3 of them i would imagine the pain would be quite unbearable !! i for one feel that music gets us through most anything. thank god for music recordings is all i can say!!
Thanks for everything Al
Imagine how deep the bond was, they were brothers and sold millions of records together. I still am not the same after my brother passed, he played drums and I am a guitar player, I have barely touched my guitars since, it's just not the same anymore.
A lover of making music never quits. Music is therapeutic. Maybe its too painful without EVH
Alex is a great drummer and I miss hearing him play. Both Ed and Alex are one of a kind.
After I had my last heart attack, I gave my drums away in pieces. I didn't want any one drummer having my complete set. It has been five years and I am feeling better, so I might get another drum set, but I can understand why Neal Peart and Alex and Phil Collins decided to quit. Age and health issues are especially hard on drummers, but all of us tend to get demoralized for various reasons. That's life I guess.
I saw him play the "glued together" kit on the rotating stage at the Cotton Bowl, when Sammy lost his voice. Coolest drumming I have ever seen, live or on film! Thanks Alex, and all of VH.
Thank you Alex Van Halen for the inspiration throughout my life as a drummer. You will forever be missed and respected as one of the greatest thunder gods of all time.❤
Give Alex room and support🍻
He's 71?

Let's hope he's healthy and able to live a long comfortable life..

Mindy says hello alex. Rest in peace Edward. Mindy has told me a lot of cool stories man
This is coming from a 45+ year musician. For me, music has been a constant companion throughout my life. It's given me the highest of highs & carried me through the roughest of times. I simply can't imagine life without it. Everyone grieves differently. If this is how Alex is dealing with his grief, so be it. I just know that I can't just stop. On a side note: I have read about musicians who took their own lives because they could not play music anymore for one reason or another. For them, life without music is not life at all.
While I'm sure Eddies a big part of it still its not unusual for ageing rock stars or just any musician to sell off a lot of their stuff. Lots have done it. At 58 I can tell you the older you get the more you think about death & not wanting to burden your loved ones with selling your collection when your gone.
This! It's just stuff. Anyone who's ever had to clean out a home of a loved one after they've passed, figures out real quickly that we all have too much stuff. Yes some of it has sentimental value, but most of it is just stuff.
I’m a drummer. Alex will have to keep his favorite sets to practice on. He’s too good to stop practicing. I understand selling the stuff he will never use again to fans. Everyone wins. What a great drummer he is. Left his mark.
Cool guy and way underrated drummer.
Also don't forget that Alex is now an old man. Playing kit drums is a physically demanding thing. If he feels his skills are now diminished, he likely does not want to play anymore.
He is 71 years old... playing drums is not that easy to do when you get older. And his lifetime musical partner is gone. Nothing wrong with him retiring.
I think its AWESOME! Get that gear out to musicians that will play them or cherish it either way set the gear free. I wish other musicians did the same. Imagine a museum, an interactive museum! Alex's drum kits everywhere. Videos and sound and lights WOW. A 3D experience as the drummer of VH what a trip! grab some sticks or bring your own
71 yrs old, lil bro gone...yeah, hard to believe hes lost interest ! One of the coolest drummers I've ever seen and does not get the credit he deserves as a great drummer.
I just turned 62, I'm so grateful I just moved to the Philippines from Australia, I went to Australia when I was 7. I had an AWESOME childhood there I remember crystal clear when I first heard Van Halen, I saw them live over 25 years ago in Brisbane Australia. And then there's all the others, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Boston, Deep Purple, ZZTOP, SRV, Iron Maiden, Joe Satriani, and so many more, what a time to be alive, and now a few years after covid. The shit that's been coming out the last 15 years the next 10-50 years are not going to be boring. Buckle up everyone. I'm so grateful I have a lot of people who care about me, I'm very privileged. I'm trying to give something back.
The best way to honor his brother would be to do a couple of Tribute to Eddie Van Halen Concerts and donate 100% of the money made to help others dealing with Cancer or whatever Charity he supports. And I guarantee you that he can get any Drum Company to give him a Custom Drum Set that he can use and then auction it off after the Tribute Concerts!
I want his snare drum ! He has the BEST sounding snare in rock history
Now I have heared many other big names talk about Anthony I have gained such respect for him as a person.
That is sad indeed!!!!;(;( RIP EVH!!!!
I hope the Best for Alex who must be at a very lonely place now!!!!!
come on now ... a warehouse full of gear that he had never ever planed to use = no real value to keep paying for storage until he passes away ! IF he does plan to play in a show or shows again - Ludwig will be making him a BRAND NEW KIT ! I am also willing to bet $$$ that Michael Anthony hasn't talked to Alex and so he would have no clue as to why he had decided to sell off his stuff
I was sad to see him sell his awards and gold or platinum records. He could always buy another drum set if he felt like playing but hopefully, he will enjoy retirement. Those men worked their asses off for so long, touring and recording. Grateful for the music they made for us!
IMHO, playing music would help me grieve
People make bad decisions whilst grieving it is part of the process.
Everyone has their way of grieving! ❤VH
Keep at least one kit Al. The world could really do with your awesomeness. Maybe after some time, you'll get back out there man.
I get it. I lost my person I have never been able to to play after that. It’s sad but I get it. I sold all my gear after my person passed away
Love Al's drumming one of the top drummers of all time.
He once said he found inspiration from John Holmes.
Par for the course. Excellent move.
Happy Retirement 😊Alex.
Love ya Al and feel for you!.. Eddie wasn't our brother but this pain still in my heart tell's me otherwise.✌️💛🤘
Stayed true to his brother. Let him be.
Alex died with Eddie on October 06, 2020. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. " The Cows Came Home ".
Well deserved. Thank you Alex for the badass music. The sound track of my life
So sad, but the show must go on.
It really draws down the curtain on a definitive era. Relistening to AVH recently and specifically on the Fair Warning album I can't help but feel he never got his fair due and adequate kudos.
My brother passed 4 months ago No one gave a Shit So I Feel his pain. You are on your own in this world. BELIEVE ME
I feel that Alex is doing the rite thing .
well, better to be played than sit in a warehouse collecting dust. I will say this, a brother's bond is tight and I can't imagine what AVH is going through, but, yeah, we are all still grieving the loss of EVH. Alex, I hope you find some peace.
GOD have mercy on Alex and save his soul and save his family in the name of JESUS CHRIST.
He’s selling while enough of his fans are still alive, with big bank accounts, for him to maximize his profits. Gen Z’s won’t pay $ for this stuff in 20 years.
Interesting. Good business mind and smart. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe it's because Alex primarily looks at ANYTHING from his PREVIOUS life as just THAT - another life he wants to leave behind. No one talks about it but MAYBE he gave his life to Jesus. He and Edward were a lot more 'SPIRITUAL' than most realize. They were/are both very private.
For instance, if you see the cover of when they last went on tour with Dave and Wolfgang prior to Edward's departure, Edward is the only ONE looking up to the ray of light shining down on them presuming it's from God. That MEANT something.
Sounds like someone hit the nail on its head...I've never seen that picture,..please share it,..always think about eddie , and music,..guitar player.
@@michaeltammaro482 apparently AVH is an ordained minister. He married not only EVH & his 2nd wife, but also Valerie Bertinelli & her 2nd husband.
Whatever his stuff sells for now will probably quadruple in price in 20 years. That’s just the way it works.
He's 71 years old don't you think he deserves to get a break and live he's life like he wants!?
Man, I support Alex in whatever brings him peace and joy. I bought an EVH Frankie relic, because its not just a guitar to me, its my personal connection to Ed, he was my hero, and he was his big brothers hero too. He’s right, he loves the fans as much as anyone, he’s special.
As a drummer slash musician, I can see how such a great loss would promote one to feel like he does,,, all that equipment reminds him,, if he did ever desire to play again it be time for new equipment.
Alex can do what he wants, he earned it and the haters and trolls can go take a hike.
I can understand why Alex feels the way that he does. I have two brothers and we're pretty close, and I wouldn't want to see anything happen to either one of them. 💔
I can’t imagine Alex WANTING to play Van Halen music WITHOUT his brother. I mean what’s to get excited about?, playing with Dave/Sammy or Wolfgang/Satriani/or Dweezil on guitar? I just can’t imagine him at his age having a good time playing those memorable songs without his brother!
Alex certainly inspired me. He is underrated. Alex is rock drumming royalty.
It's a shame his gear is going for astronomical prices. Only other rich and wealthy drummers will have a chance at owning a piece of his gear while us common folk fans can only dream.
Yes he’s grieving and along with what Van Halen created for ALL of us to enjoy I CAN NOT IMAGINE how tough this has got to be for the elder brother of …. Devastating,…
After all the trash the Van Halen's talked about Michael Anthony he takes the high road and doesn't use this opportunity to get back at them. Rather he expresses sympathy to Alex's loss. Anthony is a class act.
This was posted 1 day ago and the auction is already closed. Thanks for the heads up.
Alex and wolfgang and even roth should join up with sammy satch and michael anthony on this upcoming tour.
