Yes Tamil music has to be given value no doubts on that but the issue is reach of cranatic music is far wider for centuries and also all music base is from those 7 swarams only. Unless otherwise reach of Tamil music doesn't go wide it won't reach the level of carnatic songs
But it does not mean folks songs in local languages have to be rejected.

Immaturity people. Even Anitha mam loves both carnatic,& folk music.
I totally enjoyed this interview. Lot of valuable information. However I don't agree with your comment saying as if Carnatic is not available to everyone or quoting TM Krishna. The issue is not about the availability. Rather it was used by missionaries to convert people. Basically saying, see these "brahmin" people, they all sing about Jesus. So Christianity is better than other religions and you should convert. That's what was condemned. Anyone who is interested should be able to sing any form of music as no there is restriction from learning. I live in US and many of Christian friends are learning Bharathanatyam or Carnatic or both. They do sing all the Keerthanais and notes which are about Hindu gods. Also i don't understand why Anitha has to put down carnatic music by saying it takes months to learn anything. Yes, it takes years of practice to master "Sa, Ri, Ga.." After all thats what the basic of everything in carnatic music. Is it is easy for anyone to say "ulali" with tongue twisted or do a kolvai without practice? It doesn't matter which form of music you are interested, you need to perfect the basic before moving forward. I am not against Tamil Songs or folk songs however it doesn't have to be one is better than other. It is easier for people to attain it but doesn't mean Folks songs are better either. How many folk singers can do a breathless alapana like carnatic singers? The swarams come from the throat and for that "Sa,pa,sa" is so important. Again, just because you like one genre of music doesn't mean another genre is bad. Both has its own pros and cons.
The Issue is use of Carnatic ragas for cinema and folk songs. Purists always oppose it. Christian digestion of hindu traditions is not limited to Carnatic music and not allowing folk songs only leads to more resentment which could be exploited by missionaries to convert more people in villages.
