Please read this before asking any questions you might have about the run. Q. What does 100% consist of? A. 100% completion of this game includes obtaining all 880 unique moons, all costumes and hats (excluding the "special" outfits in the shop, as they are DLC from updates and the game does not count it for completion), all purple coins, all souvenirs, all stickers, all captures, and all music tracks. Q. Why didn't you get to 999 moons? Wouldn't that be a part of 100%? A. The game still gives a star on your file if you get everything excluding buying extra shop moons to get to 999 moons in the Odyssey, and that star on your file determines 100% completion in the speedrun.com/smo rules for 100%. Q. Why didn't you get all checkpoints? Wouldn't that be a part of 100%? A. The game still gives a star on your file if you get everything else needed for 100%, as the game doesn't keep a number count of how many checkpoints collected visible. Q. What is the difference between 100% and All Moons? A. 100%, as stated above, includes all moons, as well as all purple coins, costumes, souvenirs, etc. All Moons is strictly just all moons, you need to get some purple coins and costumes and stuff but only for certain moons that require them, such as for Toadette achievement moons. Q. Why is the game not in English? A. The language used in this run is Simplified Chinese, which is the third to last option in the language options in the game’s settings. This is because both Simplified and Traditional Chinese are believed to be the fastest languages for this game, from current testing. How? Anywhere where there is dialogue on screen where you scroll by it, since Simplified/Traditional Chinese has the least amount of characters, it scrolls by the fastest in that language. There are also usually less text boxes in that dialogue compared to other languages like English, saving even more time. I don't think anyone has timed the languages properly for 100%, but it's likely that Simplified Chinese, which is what I used in this run, is the fastest language to use since it's been timed to be faster for most other categories. Q. Why did the timer end when you got to the file select? A. Timing stops when the star appears on the file you were playing on, and to see that you need to go to the file select screen. As for why timing ends there instead of anywhere else, there isn't really a better time to stop timing for this category other than there, and that's what the SMO speedrunning community agreed on. Q. Why does the title say 8:33:57 when the timer ended at 8:33:58 on screen? A. I retimed the run to be 8:33:57.6 by checking the exact start and end frames, which is slightly more accurate than the timer because I have to manually start and end the timer during the run. The timer was also very slightly faster than normal during this run, so even if I split perfectly it still would've said 8:33:58 on there. Q. What controller are you using? A. I’m using detached Joy-Cons for this run. Not only is it faster to use Joy-Cons for this run as there are a lot of cases in the run where it’s fast to do a downthrow (which are not possible to do with a Pro Controller without a ground pound), I also just find playing on detached Joy-Cons more comfortable than using my Pro Controller because using motion controls on the Pro Controller isn’t as comfortable for me. Q. Why did you choose Wooded/Seaside first when first unlocking the kingdoms? A. The order that you choose kingdoms is important since the painting chain (the order of kingdoms when you go through paintings that are in most kingdoms) order depends on if you choose Lake/Wooded and Snow/Seaside first. Choosing Wooded and Seaside first presents the most optimal painting chain order for the route for multiple specific reasons, and to be honest I don't know all of them. The route was made by people that are a lot smarter than me, and they have a lot of reasoning behind some of the odd-seeming choices in the route. Q. Why did you go into the Cascade dino room over and over again? A. This is coin grinding. To buy all costumes required for 100% completion, you need quite a lot of coins. As you don't get that many coins naturally in the game without it just being slower, you need to do coin grinding for those extra needed coins. Q. Why didn't you use the Bowser's coin beanstalk area? Isn't that the fastest way to grind coins? A. The Bowser's coin beanstalk area is actually slower to use comparing to the Cascade dino room, with one trick up its sleeve. There is a trick in this dino room called coin duplication. With certain blocks, if you hit them in a certain way, you can use the dino's multiple hitboxes to break the blocks multiple times according to the game, and that gives extra coins. That's why I take a bit to hit some blocks in that dino room, to set up the coin duplication to get maximum coins from the blocks. In one block, it gives a set of 8 coins for you to collect, and with coin duplication, you can get up to 48 coins instead of 8, which saves a lot of time when it adds up after completing the room so many times. You can also do this coin duplication on other blocks in the game, more notably I attempted to get extra coins from the blocks before doing dino skip in Cascade 1. There is an in-depth tutorial for how to do this, provided here: th-cam.com/video/f3jtE2zeDr0/w-d-xo.html Q. Why did you have to do two separate coin grinding sessions at separate times? A. This is because you need to buy items from the shop at separate times. Q. Why do you sometimes cap throw a ton? A. This is for any section where the game has an "autoscroller" or any place where you have to wait for something to happen in the game (such as a moon spawning or during a boss fight). This is for the Toadette achievement moon where you have to get 5,000 cap throws. This helps you get enough cap throws without wasting time to farming cap throws separately. Q. 3:16:59 - 3:18:41, 7:45:59 - 7:47:38 What was that? A. This is jump farming/grinding. This is for that Toadette achievement moon regarding 10,000 jumps. Once again, you don't get to 10,000 jumps naturally doing this run so you need to do extra, and jumping here is the currently the fastest known way to get extra jumps in. Q. 7:49:12 - 7:54:00 Why/how is Mario invisible? A. After beating Darker Side, you unlock the invisible cap, which makes Mario invisible. Since it's slower to go into the Odyssey to change the outfit back to normal, you just play with Mario being invisible until you buy the costume in Bowser's Kingdom that's required to get a couple of moons. It makes the couple minutes that you're invisible a bit harder, but it's certainly worth the big timesave. Q. How come you aren’t playing in 2P mode? Isn’t that faster? A. A completely 2P 100% run isn’t possible. This is because collecting some moons like for Koopa Freerunning races isn’t possible as you can’t enter those races in 2P mode. Even if it was faster to enter 1P mode when you need to do Koopa Freerunning then switch back to 2P mode right after, it wouldn’t be allowed on the leaderboards since 2P mode is not allowed for any main board categories, with the exception of Any% on specifically the 2P subcategory. Q. What version of the game are you playing on? A. I’m playing on version 1.3 digital, which is the fastest version to play on for all mainboard categories. No, 1.0 isn’t faster to play on. For 100%, in fact, it’s tens of minutes slower to play on, mostly due to difference in load times and coin duplication/Luigi coin hint arts, neither of which can be used on 1.0. Q. Where are the leaderboards for this? A. speedrun.com/smo#100 Q. How do you memorize this whole run’s route? A. There’s a route for this run on Google Slides that has everything you need to do in order, and you can have it open during the run. However, after doing several completed runs of this you kind of just have it memorized on your own at that point. Here's the link for the route closest to what I do in this run: docs.google.com/presentation/d/1zCqMPh4ZfR0GKu5YJaf33OL56AEsDhJ80x186iYb4zo/edit If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I'll try to answer with a reply to your comment and then I will add most to this pinned FAQ.

It took me 2 weeks to do this in one sitting... And boy was it worth it. I seriously do believe this is the Mario version of Sonic Unleashed. Props to you
I think to go in the hall of fame you need significantly longuer than only 9 hours, but ok Edit: I guess you are talking about only smo, in that case nevermind me
By the time I'm done watching this video, it'll be in the morning. Thanks for this, gonna go reset my Odyssey file which has 345 moons because I feel like I can clean up some stuff I know now and not before. I made a grave mistake.
I watched ALL the run and, first well done, tht was very interresting. But i spent less time than you. I hope you don't forget everything else. Again, well done and good luck.
100% sub 8:30! That too crazy for you and the mario odyssey speedrun community! Take 4.5 or 9 months of rest from this game for the ultimate showdown of mario odyssey 100%
Whenever I see someone making a speedrun, I'm reminded again that I'd never be able to pull stunts like this off. Sometimes I'm able to rush through one level in a game in a minimum amount of time, like World 1-1 in New Super Mario Bros DS, but I don't think that counts, especially in comparison to the fact that true speedrunners play through *entire games* and not just one level in the fastest way possible . On a sidenote if you're interested: my best run for World 1-1 in New Super Mario Bros DS was 30 level timer seconds. Dunno if it's possible to get any lower, I never managed that.
i think it’s definitely possible for you too if you tried, it took me a long time to get at this level and i’d probably be thinking i’d never be able to be at this level when i first started too
I don't think my method of using the level timer as a countdown clock will work for becoming a speedrunner, also I don't think I'm cut out for creating a speedrun myself. But maybe I'll try and take notes of my best runs for some levels. I was playing this World 1-1 run on a completed save file, which is why I had Fire Mario, but I never used a single fireball.
The 8 bit section in New Donk City festival was my coin farm 250 coins a run you restart at the beginning each death I believe it was a hour roughly but as far as post game is Luigi’s balloon mode is far easier in my opinion especially with streaks giving you significant amount of coins with streak bonuses
@@benjaminjunior7570 I don’t understand what you’re saying can you explain in English please I apologize if I’m being rude I don’t want anyone to get offended I only speak English
What exactly is the jump you do in 7:25:19 in order to get to the top of the pillar? Is it the same thing you do when climbing poles quickly like in 7:39:17?
yeah it’s basically the same in both clips, it’s basically just diving towards cappy when you’re really close to him and when cappy’s against the wall, the speedrunning community calls it a shirane bounce
it’s kinda just try to have decent movement and make little mistakes honestly, like the routing is pretty optimized and is made/updated by some really smart people but all of the top runs still have a ton of mistakes in them
3:20 So sad to be locked to only one game. X( 2:03:05 HA HA, a flaw in the bored, perfect run! 5:34:20 Ugh, why does the quietness of Deep Woods have to be ruined by that song?
for some unknown reason there’s a cutscene trigger for the broodal fight at the exit only for hariet, so you can only do the skip properly with the other 3 broodals
i think it will be in the future, since it’s definitely possible that there’s a faster way to get coins for the outfits that just no one has discovered yet, and that could potentially save tens of minutes of coin farming. also sub 8 technically is possible already with getting coins from luigi’s balloon world or with amiibo to unlock outfits, but both of those are banned from the leaderboards on speedrun.com for lack of accessibility and issues with the online aspect of balloon world
if you're asking how long it took for me to get a run this fast i don't really have an answer because i only do 100% attempts a few times per year really, but in 100% specifically i have like 150 hours from just PB attempts
Is this run legit? I mean in Cascade 4 hour and 30 seconds in the video after you grab the bunny your both hands are on your head and Mario still start to move without your hands touching the controller And 2nd what was it you did 3 times I didn't understand that
for the first part i still had my joycons in my hands even though they looked hidden in my hair so i was still able to move, and for the second part i accidentally did koopa freerunning 3 times instead of 2, which lost around a minute
there’s a cutscene trigger for the fight where the exit for the room is, and for some weird reason it’s only in the second room, so you aren’t able to skip that one specifically
Both Simplified/Traditional Chinese has the least amount of characters? No wonder many people says that Chinese is the most difficult language in the world.
since i recorded this with multiple audio tracks i can technically upload a version of it with only the game audio, but i can’t remove anything visual from the video so the webcam and twitch chat would still be there
it’s hard to tell how low it can go because of how long it is and how much it can be improved but i know for sure that 8:1x can eventually happen, not currently but in the future
right now on the leaderboards my run is in first place, but a couple months ago or so another runner submitted an 8:32:19 which got verified but for some reason he deleted the run from the leaderboards. the vid of that run is still public on hazeflash’s twitch channel, but he’s had a history of randomly deleting his runs off of the leaderboards like in this case, which i’m guessing is just him not being proud enough with how good his runs are or something. regardless, unless it’s proven that the run was faked or something like that, i won’t consider my run the actual world record still
8:32:19 by hazeflash, it was on the leaderboards but he deleted the run off of there a couple weeks later and i’m not 100% sure why. his video is still on his twitch channel though
It’s a brain fart we all have I’ve experienced it it’s horrible but at least you’ll realize quickly because how good your brain works the fact he made that mistake I’ve had mistakes like that before probably not the same way but in different games shit happens it’s only like a minute loss I can’t imagine this category will happen again lots of people are dedicated to it
Bruh i have oddyssey on my switch, and dont speedrun it whatsoever, and have only beaten it twice, in about 2 days each, and thouroughly watched this entire video start to end in 2 days because i was bored. jesus christ my attention span is built different. ( i use shorts)

I was playing this World 1-1 run on a completed save file, which is why I had Fire Mario, but I never used a single fireball.
@@MarvinBretschneider. the IL record for 1-1 uses the countdown timer and is currently a tied 27 by ~250 people.
@@Wookis I used the level timer, so I'm out anyways. :D
IL runs do that too actually!@@MarvinBretschneider.
The 8 bit section in New Donk City festival was my coin farm 250 coins a run you restart at the beginning each death I believe it was a hour roughly but as far as post game is Luigi’s balloon mode is far easier in my opinion especially with streaks giving you significant amount of coins with streak bonuses

What is your favorite category to run? All moons?
yeah it would be all moons
second
Grats and gg man
Damn 10 min wr gg
I know im late but you have talent your really good
Congratulation For This Amazing World Record ! 😸 🐙 🦑 👻 🙈
Wow really good Job gg
When you landed half oob after nut clip in Wooded 1 was there route movement after or just swag?
You are insane at the game
congrats
What exactly is the jump you do in 7:25:19 in order to get to the top of the pillar? Is it the same thing you do when climbing poles quickly like in 7:39:17?
yeah it’s basically the same in both clips, it’s basically just diving towards cappy when you’re really close to him and when cappy’s against the wall, the speedrunning community calls it a shirane bounce
OMG lost kingdom
How much time could realistically be taken off this run by cutting mistakes by half?
probably like 5 minutes
@@heytherecool thanks for responding! Great run!
Is this category very optimized or is it just try to have decent movement and make little mistakes
it’s kinda just try to have decent movement and make little mistakes honestly, like the routing is pretty optimized and is made/updated by some really smart people but all of the top runs still have a ton of mistakes in them
3:20 So sad to be locked to only one game. X(
2:03:05 HA HA, a flaw in the bored, perfect run!
5:34:20 Ugh, why does the quietness of Deep Woods have to be ruined by that song?
i honestly don’t mind it i don’t like too many other types of games anyways
3:04:52 The Moon jingle and the background music kinda align lol
4:00:34 did u just use the force on Mario or something?
How do speedrunners not get carpal tunnel having to use motion controls for rolls??
i’ve heard of at least one case of someone getting carpal tunnel from this game but i never really had issues with it personally idk
@@heytherecool lmao, take care, congrats on the run
nice a sub 8:40
At roughly 2:28:00, why do you skip the other broodals but fight one?
for some unknown reason there’s a cutscene trigger for the broodal fight at the exit only for hariet, so you can only do the skip properly with the other 3 broodals
@@heytherecool ahh okay. Thanks for responding!

do you think sub 8 hour is humanly possible? everyone thought sub hour for normal speed run was impossible before... your thoughts?
i think it will be in the future, since it’s definitely possible that there’s a faster way to get coins for the outfits that just no one has discovered yet, and that could potentially save tens of minutes of coin farming. also sub 8 technically is possible already with getting coins from luigi’s balloon world or with amiibo to unlock outfits, but both of those are banned from the leaderboards on speedrun.com for lack of accessibility and issues with the online aspect of balloon world
Serious question: Isn't faster to get the coins with Luigi's Balloon World?
Its not allowed
If smo got a demo that you could play for 9 hours (Idkw but yeah) heytherecool confirmed
Damn, how long did this take you!?
if you're asking how long it took for me to get a run this fast i don't really have an answer because i only do 100% attempts a few times per year really, but in 100% specifically i have like 150 hours from just PB attempts
question did you ever get hungry during this run
yes, i usually have snacks on the side to eat during cutscenes though
There should be a category where you do it 5 times to get a star on every savefile
3 koopa's run is crazy 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was wondering, is balloon hunting not allowed for this run or is it slower than the dino room?
it's not allowed
@@heytherecool okay makes sense
Is this run legit?
I mean in Cascade 4 hour and 30 seconds in the video after you grab the bunny your both hands are on your head and Mario still start to move without your hands touching the controller
And 2nd what was it you did 3 times I didn't understand that
for the first part i still had my joycons in my hands even though they looked hidden in my hair so i was still able to move, and for the second part i accidentally did koopa freerunning 3 times instead of 2, which lost around a minute
@@heytherecool what do you think someone can get with like as little time loss as possible?
@@RoseQuartz692 as of right now maybe a low 8:2x, so like 10 minutes better than this
@@heytherecool I'm more of SM64 guy but even I could see that you could get like 828 or 829 in this run
@@RoseQuartz692 i could pretty realistically get like an 8:26 soon but i haven’t had much time recently to play
What great fucking video
When in this run does the game become complete by Any% standards?
1:43:31
do you know if the flying Dry Bones room in Bowser's to is possible without capturing the flying dry bones
yes it is
Did you need to change your outfits in order to get some of the moons, such as clown outfit
yes
Why didn't you skip the second broodal in dark side?
there’s a cutscene trigger for the fight where the exit for the room is, and for some weird reason it’s only in the second room, so you aren’t able to skip that one specifically
8:36:35 ok bye the hole gameplay
Why do you not use Luigi’s Balloon World? Is it banned? Or is it just not consistent enough
it’s banned because of the online aspect, if it were allowed it would save a lot of time
a big « bien joué » from french community !
Gg for sub 8h40
Both Simplified/Traditional Chinese has the least amount of characters?

What time is possible for the 100% speedrun?
it’s hard to tell how low it can go because of how long it is and how much it can be improved but i know for sure that 8:1x can eventually happen, not currently but in the future
This is not former world record bro
right now on the leaderboards my run is in first place, but a couple months ago or so another runner submitted an 8:32:19 which got verified but for some reason he deleted the run from the leaderboards. the vid of that run is still public on hazeflash’s twitch channel, but he’s had a history of randomly deleting his runs off of the leaderboards like in this case, which i’m guessing is just him not being proud enough with how good his runs are or something. regardless, unless it’s proven that the run was faked or something like that, i won’t consider my run the actual world record still
What is the current WR. Can someone please tell me?????
Bro same I have no idea
8:32:19 by hazeflash, it was on the leaderboards but he deleted the run off of there a couple weeks later and i’m not 100% sure why. his video is still on his twitch channel though

It would've been so nice if alternate skins had special abilities instead of being purely cosmetic
that would've been cool but it would've probably been hard to come up for ideas for each costume and its own ability
rip 3:59:50 bro did it 3 times
It’s a brain fart we all have I’ve experienced it it’s horrible but at least you’ll realize quickly because how good your brain works the fact he made that mistake I’ve had mistakes like that before probably not the same way but in different games shit happens it’s only like a minute loss I can’t imagine this category will happen again lots of people are dedicated to it
Master of the Moons?
Did anybody actually watch this whole thing through?
Yes, me and BroshiGames for sure
