Hi ! You should react to Loïc Nottet, a belgium 🇧🇪 singer, and his song Million Eyes. He has a unique voice, very high and beautiful (people loooove it or hate it, there's no middle). And he is a contemporary dancer too... Here is the clip : th-cam.com/video/68EnJITH-5Q/w-d-xo.html And here is the live version (it's better to watch the clip first I think) : th-cam.com/video/lYBSQ1eAeBQ/w-d-xo.html Kiss from France 🇫🇷
Avi had a number of reasons to leave, actually. The constant touring was wearing him down, plus his mother was quite ill and he wanted to be able to spend more time with her. His first musical love was of a more folk type. Most of us were pretty heartbroken when he left, but I'm really glad to see him happy and more fulfilled. Also, his writing and solo work is amazing!
You are confusing Kevin with Matt. Kevin is the beatboxer, tenor. He does not do bass (except for his kick drum which myself have confused with a bass 🤣). Matt is not in this video, Avi is.
Yup. Same members as her last video, but she clearly doesn't realize that. She simply needs the headshots with their names. Just plain Google can produce that.
this is not quadraphonic, it's just stereo, left and right. quadraphonic is left front- right front, left back -right back. you then also need 4 speakers. you can also hear it in for instance in feeling that way, by Journey. the beatles also did that, long time ago. but yes, Queen did it also in their version of this song. th-cam.com/video/vg5vziU-qIs/w-d-xo.html 03:05 min.
@@oougahersharr no problem. also in action movies, quadraphonic is used: my brother has a quadrafonic installation with 4 speakers in his room, one in every corner; you hear jet fighters coming from all sides, very frightening 😀
The issue with your characterization of Mitch's voice is not about head vs falsetto, it's about the fact that Mitch is singing in CHEST voice in the majority of this song and in chest or mixed voice in almost the entirety of his solo in Hallelujah, excepting only a note or two.
He does slip into the falsetto register a few times in this song. Admittedly, he does it for the different timbre it gives him, not for the range extension; he can hit all these notes in his modal register easily, with the possible exception of that one high note, "for meeeeeeee". Mitch is something of an expert at using different registers. He's the only singer I know of (though I'm sure there are others, I just don't know of other specific examples) who can sing words in the whistle register; though he doesn't do it in actual performance, probably either because it sounds quite odd (we're not used to hearing singers do that, likely because most of them never learn how), or else because he can't do it reliably enough to count on for live performances, not sure which. But there are recordings of him doing it in some of the behind-the-scenes / messing-around-in-the-studio videos, and it's kinda impressive.
The couch is a callback to the beginning of PTX when they would do live recordings from their various couches in their homes and post on youtube. This video was released in 2017 and has the original members: Mitch (early lead vocal - counter tenor), Scott (lead vocal towards the end - high baritone(and sometimes bass), Kirstin (only woman in the group - mezzo), Kevin (beatboxer - tenor) and Avi (bass). Avi left the group the same year (2017) and Matt joined them for the christmas tour (he officially joined the group in 2018)
The couch is also a reference to Wayne's World. This is why it's on rollers and moving around, because it is standing in for both the couch (the single most iconic thing in Wayne's World) and also the car (which is more prevalent in the scenes featuring Bohemian Rhapsody).
You need to realize that Mitch's tessitura is that of a counter-tenor! His vocal quality is rare. He is NOT a normal tenor; Mitch's quality was more prevalent from the 12th century through the Baroque period. It became out of fashion from then on, because castrati were subject to such abuse. Natural counter-tenors are quite rare. Pentatonix is a blessed group because of the exceedingly extensive ranges of all the singers! The Trio have been friends since they were ten years old, so they sing intuitively and blend naturally.
If this was the first time you heard sound first on one side and then the other, then you've never listened to Queen's original, because this was a wink to them by PTX.
I don't know if I got it confused (sorry, English isn't my first language) but I suppose you believe this is the current formation of the group, which is not. This is the original line up so Kevin is beatboxing and Avi is singing bass. Matt replaced Avi in late 2017 🙂 I know I can't really suggest you something for this channel but give their performance of "Silent Night" a chance in your free time at least. It's live and it's gorgeous.
I'm sorry that you're getting some negative comments. Some people are very overprotective of PTX and perhaps they forget what it's like to be at the beginning of the PTX journey, especially if you're trying to remain fairly fresh to them for authentic reactions. Your musical analysis is much appreciated.
It's disappointing if they're being like that. It is slightly embarrassing she hasn't simply pulled up headshots with their names via Google, but I've seen mean comments also if someone says something like "this isn't live" or "there's a bit too much air". Geez. I wish fans would allow people their opinions. Politely correct actual errors, like her mixing band members up, but let actual opinions stand.
@@Wiley_Coyote Exactly. We can all be civil about critical feedback. It takes very little extra effort, and it means so much to the people taking the time to create content for us.
In this video, you have Avi (bass), Kevin (beatboxer), Scott (baritone), Mitch (tenor) and Kirstie (mezzo-sop). These are the same singers on all videos made from when they formed in 2011 until Avi left in late 2017. Then Matt joined the group, and has been in all the videos since then. Kevin doesn't often sing, but when he does, he has a nice mid-range tenor voice and a great falsetto. If you want to hear them each sing a verse, including Kevin, check out PTX Imagine. So - check the dates on the original videos - after 2017, it's Matt.
If you have ever listened to the original song with headphones (in stereo) the movement between the left and right headphones is there. This video has a LOT of homages to the original video as well (the all black with just the flashlights underlighting.) The couch. Ok, back when they were just starting, after they got dropped by their label so quickly after they won The Sing-Off, it was either make something of it independently or let the band die and go back to school. They decided to build on their fan base through social media. They started making covers of pop tunes and putting them on TH-cam. Many of these were shot in Kevin and Avi's apartment sitting on a funky orange couch/sofa. We Pentaholics call these SofaSongs. They were covers of pop tunes filmed in what I call the 3-2-1 format. 3) Three sitting on the back of the sofa (and if not on the sofa standing behind) This would be "The Trio" Kirstin, Scott, and Mitch (S&M have known each other since they were in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory at 9/10yrs old and met Kirstie in High school - BFFs ever since.) 2) Two sitting in front. Avi (opera trained basso profundo introduced to Scott by a college friend and Kevin (Beatboxer/cellist/ saxophone (though he hasn't played it with the group he did play it at Carnegie Hall as a teen)/tenor/genius) was found when they typed in "beatboxer" into TH-cam and saw his cello-boxing video 'Julie-o' and they just KNEW he was the one! He also was Pre-med at Yale at the time and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, you know...as you do... are placed up close to the Mic to get their sounds in. 1) ONE TAKE. No cuts. Every song. I believe this is an homage to the journey the sofa started then on... I might be wrong but I think either Bohemian Rhapsody or Imagine was the last video with Avi in it before he left...so full circle for the couch?
Also homage paid to Queen with the 4 shooting stars (4 Queen members). Lead guitarist, Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist, so the night sky is featured. Some say that the moving couch with Mitch is supposed to represent a coffin being carried by pallbearers - a deceased Freddie (or the straight man inside him that he shot with his trigger when he came out as Bi to his mother).
PTX often changes their looks and style, so getting a bit confused is understandable. Avi (the bearded one) is their original bassist, though Scott (the one in a hoodie) has a very wide range and picked up bass when Avi sung lead. A few years ago, Avi's mother was extremely sick (cancer, I believe) and Avi found he could not keep up with the intense schedule and touring for the group while seeing his family. He helped the group find Matt, who has been their bassist since. The five you see here is their original configuration! Kevin has been the beatboxer the entire time, though he does have a nice singing voice that gets showcased in a few videos. The Avi > Matt switch is the only change in members, so rest assured that no matter how different or crazy their style may look from video to video, it will always be one of these six (Mitch is especially known to be confused for a new person due to his wide style range). Hope this helps!
That doesn't say much in this day and age, concidering new microphones have now got auto pitch options, and other sound quality options built in. I've always thought they sound kind of computerized, for lack of a better word. I doubt anyone is going to want to sound that way, especially by design.
Mitch has such a unique voice. He's a counter tenor rather than a regular tenor and you so rarely find that in a guy. And yesssssss! Avi's bass is *amazing* and so damned rich!
Ok, where to start... compliments first: I love your energy! Music is clearly a passion of yours. I also appreciate you ‘tried’ to do homework on Pentatonix. Ok, now, other comments: Kirsten is known to explain how to pronounce her name by saying, “Kirsty, like thirsty.” This video is over 4 years old. These 5 are still the ORIGINAL 5, in fact, the exact same 5 you saw in the Hallelujah reaction. So, Avi (the one with the beard) is the bass, and Kevin is the vocal percussionist. There is no Matt yet. (A great reaction video to do with him in it would be their cover of The Sound of Silence.) Mitch, for the majority of this song, is singing in his chest voice. The beginning Freddie melody, with the exception of the slide into his head voice that you pointed out, is allll chest voice. He is a very high tenor, some say counter-tenor although I’m not sure he’d quite qualify for that, but he is known for the incredible mix voice he does between his head and chest. Being able to hit the notes that are easy for head voice but with the power of his chest voice as well. Their live version of “Aha!” In Singapore is a GREAT example of his use of vocal mix. The couch. Long story short, in 2011, they started their career and gained success by posting videos on TH-cam. These videos were recorded live with Avi and Kevin (bass and percussion) sitting on a couch with condenser mics (since it’s just not easy to be loud with their parts) and the three others would sit behind them on the back of the couch, just like is seen at the beginning and end of this video. It is almost an homage to their roots. If you keep reacting to them, please try to keep in mind that in the 9 years they’ve been together, only ONE member has left. You mentioned this, just were wrong on timing for this video. You will see over the years that some members’ (Mitch specifically) have changed looks dramatically. I promise you, they are the same people. Ok, that’s all for now. Looking forward to the next one. (Oh, and my degree is in music... I don’t want you to think I’m just repeating comments I’ve heard 😬)
Hey Anna. Fellow Pentaholic here. Respect your comments. But in due respect, I dont think there is a need to come of rude to someone that may not know as much as some of is due. And though you may not have meant to come off as such, it seems a bit rude, a bit condescending, and a tad pompous. When I comment I don't feel the need sign my comments. I am sure you'll take my comment as "dickish", but it wasnt malicious. As much as I wish, not everybody has watched/listened to hundreds/thousands of hours of PTX like some of have. Not everybody knows about the side projects. Not everybody knows them by first last name.
Anna, I loved your response to this reaction. I agree with ALL of it! Now, it's true she may not be a Pentaholic but I do feel there's a level of responsibility to knowing what in the world you're reacting to accurately. You pointing out areas that were not correct wasn't wrong nor did it warrant you being called 'pompous' for doing so. PTX vids get A LOT of views and their fans are devoted. So, yeah, showcasing a reaction video (and continuing to do so) without learning more about the group is a bit insulting. Like, let her benefit off the hype that comes with this group but not put in the effort (AKA simple google search) to be up to date with the members and their names and roles. Not to mention confusing one black guy with another one, not cool.🙄🙄🙄
Mitch.... as several people have said, he has a very unusual voice. He goes between head and chest voice so smoothly, and has a crazy 6-octave+ vocal range. His control is amazing, and he can go from pop to rap to classical effortlessly. I adore him. Check out the Beyoncé medley by Superfruit (just Mitch and Scott’s channel). There are so many songs covered that it gives a good sample of his voice. I’d listen to Mitch sing the phone book.
This was soon before Avi left the group to care for his mother and Matt replaced him. The original Queen version also had the left and right ear switch at the beginning. The couch is in honor to the fact that they all practiced in one of their homes on a couch. This was still when they also recorded in closets and produced in the kitchen.
The left-right pan "easy come ..." is a well-known feature of the original, which they just had to replicate. The couch took them places. They won the Sing Off and got a record contract as a prize, which was almost immediately dropped because "A Cappella Doesn't Sell". They worked on songs and arrangements on the couch, did low budget recordings (Daft Punk in Avi and Kevin's closet) and they put out YT videos and got a grammy or two and then a real record contract. You may notice that Hallelujah has something like half a billion views. So that couch took them to the stars. Kevin Olusola is a great beatboxer, plays orchestra quality cello, also plays sax and does some really good layered songs solo (see KO's KOvers). He also plays a decent air trumpet. Some of the Pentatonix songs feature him on cello. He invented celloboxing. 2017 was the switchover year from Avi Kaplan (see his solo YT videos) to Matt Sallee. They also did a 'no bass' "Dancing On My Own" in mid 2017 instead employing Kevin's cello (Beyonce) to give some extra low end. I assume Matt was still training in. Avi had some family to take care of and the tour schedule was making that impossible, so he found Matt as a replacement. It looks like Matt's first showing was in early 2018. I saw Havana is 2/2018 but there may have been a late 2017 song with him.
This is still the original ptx members, which means Avi as the bass. If you want to check out Matt, you can react to The Sound of Silence, he has a beautiful solo part in it.
Mitch, Kirstie and Scott were the original trio. When they wanted to join the sing off, a Acapella singing contest, they added Avi (original bass, left in 2017) and Kevin (beatboxer, occasionally also plays cello or sings). After they won the sing off and won a record contract, they were dropped from it one week later. They started making music videos for youtube on a Couch (the couch in this video is representative of their beginnings and how far they have come). After six years, in wich they won three grammies, Avi had to leave the group, due to his mother having cancer. He was flying to her after every show and he couldn't keep up with it anymore. He said music had become a job. After that he helped them find Matt, the new Bass. I hope this helps 🙂 If you see anything that's wrong, please correct me.
The idea that Avi helped find Matt is incorrect. Ben Bram, PTX's producer/arranger headed the search, which was done by auditioning a number of singers, including Matt. Avi was already effectively gone by then and was contractually not allowed to even release his own solo music until March of 2019.
This video was done in 2016. Avi left in the fall of 2017. Matt Sallee started with PTX on their Christmas tour 2017. He’s been with them nearly three years.
ok so this is not the current pentatonix. matt sallee didn't join pentatonix officially until January of 2018 he came on a trial basis during 2017 Christmas album and tour. you will never see avi and matt in a video together as matt replaced avi when he amicably left the group for personal and family reasons. avi left after their 2017 summer tour ended in september. the person you are thinking is matt is actually kevin, he is the beatboxer but can also sing and sometimes brings out the cello during ptx's songs. hope this helps!
Kirstie is pronounced like thirsty. The couch symbolizes the journey through their career. A lot of their early video's were filmed on couches because they didn't have the money for expensive videos at the time.
There are NO effects put on. Every single thing you hear is made by their voices. Matt is not singing because this is a much older video. It's probably their best known one, but it is long before Matt's time. You will also learn as you react to more that they sound virtually identical when they sing live as when they do videos. Like I said, this is their classic, but's an early song, and as you listen to more, you will see just how much further development they have made.
@David Bangtson, Not true. Kevin, in an interview, said they used studio effects to make Mitch's guitar solo sound more "electric." I'm sure other effects were used, too. And that's okay. They are STILL a capella; it's standard in the industry to use technology to improve a performance. Doesn't mean the raw talent isn't there.
@@KajiVocals But when they are live IT SOUNDS THE SAME. So how much processing went into this IF IT SOUNDS THE SAME when they do it LIVE? Get your logic straight.
No the couch is not taking them on an adventure, it more about their history as a band. They did a number of earlier videos recorded on a couch, if I remember right I think the visuals are meant to represent how they kind of still feel like the same band, despite going on the road, at their heart they are still the group recording videos on the couch. I’m just going from memory so I may be of slightly, but I do remember them talking about the couch. A lot of people read way way too much into the couch. Oh and they are not “The Pentatonix”, does it say The Pentatonix on their page or the title of the video, it’s just “Pentatonix”.
So the couch is where all of their early arrangements were done, so here they are doing a tribute to Queen, but they're also doing a tribute to their own roots, and development. This song has actually been pinned by Queen members and touted throughout their own community, giving great support to Pentatonix for their own work. Avi was the base, Matt replaced him, but Scott is a true Barritone/bass, and is great at helping to maintain the floor, but Avi is by far the best bass of the 3 men.
There is no new guy here. This is the original crew. The bass in the lower left of the screen is Avi, the one who left the group to pursue a solo career. He was replaced by Matt, who is not in this video. The guy in the lower right is Kevin, who is the beat boxer but can also sing extremely well and also plays a bunch of instruments.
So the other guy singing the bass is the old bass AVI who was with the group originally but he left because family reasons and his health!!! He left amicable and helped the group find Matt!!! He know does his own music and you should check it out its amazing !! I love Matt and he fits amazing but AVI has to be my all time favourite bass and I love his solo stuff now !!
Avi, the black bearded bass is classically trained. I he has a fabulous range, the best resonance of any I have heard and is a good Polyphonic singer as well. The couch, from a thrift store is called cheap staging.
LOL! I think all of us do the mouth guitar part. I know I do! Also the changing from the right ear to left ear was in Queen's original. This song debuted some really experimental and fun techniques never before done in mainstream rock music. As for the members, you will get them right eventually. Just blow off anyone who fusses at you about it. If your name is not Jesus Christ, you have no right to throw stones. The couch is metaphorical. They had very humble beginnings and most everything was done from their living room. Then their careers took off and they went world wide. This was showing that even though they reached the stars, they were still just the same 5 people that started on the couch.
This song makes me cry.. it was one of the last things made that could not be redone with the same feeling then Mr. Mercury died. This is the quintessential queen song.
Avi Kaplan is original to the group from 2011-2017. Matt Salee took his place. If you watch beginners guide to Pentatonix you will learn all about the group. Very informative!
It's so clear to me that you have a real problem understanding Mitch's voice. He never used a head voice or a falsetto except in one section when he hit the high note He is a high tenor and was in his chest voice and mix through out 90%of the song.
Welcome to the PTX groupies. You will learn so much. The three principal singers (Scott, Kirsten and Mitch) all went to high school together in Arlington, TX. They added Avi and Kevin to the group in order to compete on a TV show which they won and that really launched their career. Avi, as others have explained, left the group and was replaced by Matt. (Matt has a very strong performance in Sound of SIlence). Kevin is a very accomplished musician who plays the cello (watch their version of Shallow). AS for MItch, he is a freak. No head voice, no falsetto, it's it's just Mitch. For his tour de force see the live version of Aha which was done in Singapore. They are a fabulous group and I do appreciate your recognition of their brilliance. Another thing to know is that they construct their own arrangements on the fly, through trial and error. There are a few You Tube examples of how they work. They are a delightful group to ;listen to.
The sofa is a very important aspect to Pentatonix. At home they lumber on the sofa and sing. The three Mitch, Kirsten, and Scott have known each other since middle school. Back in 2011 they performed on the Sing-Off. That is where Avi the bass and Kevin the beatboxer joined. The rest is accapella history. Check out Superfruit as well. This is a separate thing that Scott and Mitch do, you'll totally enjoy it.
After winning the third season of the Sing Off, their contract was dropped. So they started putting out covers on TH-cam and those were often set on a couch. From there it was quite a journey (hence the moving couch) to where they were when this was made. Coming back to the couch is closure.
Another Pentatonix cover you should react to is "mary did you know." Kevin has a verse to himself so you can learn his voice more and I honestly think it's my favorite cover of theirs besides bohemian rhapsody
You should hear them live, there's some recording of shows here on TH-cam, they manage to sound really good even without the guitar effect. Matt is not in this one, he only joined in the end of 2017, when Avi had to leave because his mom had cancer and he didn't want to be far from his family (Pentatonix was touring almost all year round back then). The couch is a nod to their beginning on TH-cam, they used to just sit on a couch and record their covers.
Kevin (the guy doing the beat boxing) is now new. He's been with them since 2011. Avi was the bass singer until he left in 2017. Now Matt is the bass singer.
I think a lot of people have corrected you on Matt. But I looked and it doesn't seem people have answered your couch question. So, when PTX won The Sing Off in 2011, they were going to get a record deal as part of the winning prize and they all moved to LA. A few weeks later, new management at the record company said that a capella would never sell, so they were dropped. They found themselves in a new city and they didn't know what to do, so they started putting videos up on TH-cam. They would film themselves on a iPad without proper mics...then the audio got better, but still...a lot of these videos were filmed in one of their apartments and they would sit on this orange couch that looks a lot like the couch in this video. So, this video is actually a nod to those times when they would just sit on that couch and sing. I suppose that couch took them places they never imagined. This video is nostalgic and brought them back to their roots. We fans that have been there from the beginning recognized "the couch" right away!!!
This is an older song they did. The bassist here is there original bassist. His name is Avi Kaplin. Matt is the new bassist that joined after left, and is in the newer songs.
The couch was to pay homage to how they met. Scott, Mitch and Kiersten were friends and met Avi (base) and Kevin (beatboxer) at a singing competition and joined forces. Avi helped find Matt as a replacement when he left the group.
Matt is not in this video. Avi (the man with the beard) is the group's original bass, Matt replaced Avi after this cover. Kevin (the man with black skin) is the group's beatboxer, a tenor and cellist. Mitch (has the solo for much of this cover) is a tenor of the group. Scott (the tall blonde man) is the baritone of the group. Kirstin (the only woman) is the mezzo soprano of the group.
The bass in this song is Avi who left the group a few years ago. He was replaced by Matt who Avi actually introduced to PTX. To see Matt's total range watch Sound of Silence. Stay safe.
I know everyone told you about Avi being the previous bass, but you can go to his youtube page and hear his solo stuff he's been putting out since he left the group. When he decided to leave (2017) he helped pick his replacement (which was Matt of course). His page is Avi Kaplan...I hope I didn't replete. I'm pretty tired and I didn't want to dig through 100+ posts after looking at the first 20. Anyway, Avi has a beautiful voice. Anyway, just wanted to share before I went to bed. Thanks!
The pan left and right at that one spot near the beginning is in the original studio recording by Queen. So, they're just tributing it by imitating it.
Matt is not is this video, this bass is Avi Kaplan, he is amazing, he left in 2017 because his mother had cancer and he couldn't spend time with his family because being on Pentatonix is too time consuming, he also was struggling with his mental health, he helped find Matt. His solo music is amazing, Field and Pier is an amazing one, if you want a calmer music, if you want a stronger one, listen to Change on the Rise. Avi is living in a cabin in the woods and making amazing music. He looks way hotter too haha If you want to listen to Matt you can react to Sound of Silence. Please, don't mix Matt and Kevin, they are very different. Also Kevin is a tenor and the only one doing beatboxing consistently. The couch is because on their first videos, when they had no money, they used to record on a couch, just like the begining of the video.
If you are interested in some single take recordings of theirs you should check out any of their "Evolution of..." songs or their covers of Silent Night and Gold.
(1) Kirstin, sometimes called "Kirstie" says her name rhymes with "thirsty", so judge your pronunciation of Kirtin based on that. (2) Why not ask Avi why he left? He made a video about it. th-cam.com/video/jCpg_GM6_l0/w-d-xo.html. Avi leaving and Matt joining the group is the only change. Kevin is the beatboxer, for now and forever. Oh, and the couch is kind of a PTX trademark -- they started their TH-cam career all sitting on the couch and singing.
PTX like to put little nods to themselves and also to the original artists.... people below have explained the couch and also the left/right panning at the beginning.... also the 'stars' is an apparent nod to Dr Brian May of Queen, who holds a PhD in astrophysics... and the trio falling onto the couch at the end is a nod to the album art for the Queen album 'Sheer Heart Attack' (thanks to those Pentaholics who passed on those snippets of info ! )
This is the original line up. If you listen to Superfruits Defying Gravity, you’ll get a great sense of the diffs between Mitch’s fals and head voice. I think what you’re misreading as his falsetto in these reactions is just him being very skilled with timbre/tonal colour ☺️
You should react to the doing the song "Sound of Silence". In this one you will not only be able to hear Matt (the newest member), but also hear Scott go into his lower register.
I have watched a number of reactions to ptx bohemian rhapsody but this is the first time I have ever seen the images in the video swapped left to right. Did the reactor do something different in her reaction video that caused this swap? ie: Kirsten normally is on the viewers left arm of the couch but in this video she is on the right arm of the couch.
Many, many, many of the first videos where sung on a couch. Many of those were done raw, no studio pre-recording. I really liked "Thrift Shop" and "Gundam Style".
@@UserHorologium Hahaha, ooops. nope. I honestly thought it was called Gundam...but yes it is actually Gangnam Style. I think I will remember from now on. Thanks.
This has the bass is Avi in this video. The black guy is Kevin. He does beatboxing. If you want to hear Matt, you should react to The Sound of Silence.
The different sounds from side to side was something Queen did on the original. I’m not sure how prevalent it’s use was but I’ve definitely heard the Beatles do it too
I heard the change from left to right when I use to play in a Rock Band we would pan left to right sometimes adds a different effect and I'm not using headphones so yes I heard it.
AVI (the bass in this video) left the group in 2017 -leaving a huge footprint in the group and fans- and was replaced by Matt (the actual bass, not in this video), who is doing a great job since. AVI is present in many of their most famous songs, like this one, "Hallelujah", "Imagine", or "Daft Punk Medley". If you like his amazing and charismatic "bassy voice" you should also check "Gold", "Royals", "Can't Hold Us" or "Love Again"... you won't be disappointed. See you in the next one
Also, as others have mentioned, Avi is still in the group at this point (the bass) and Matt hasn't joined yet. You are confusing Matt with Kevin (the beatboxer), who has been with the group since the beginning.

The white guy with the big beard is Avi. He WAS the bass but left and Was replaced with Matt.
@@Wiley_Coyote google is confusing though lol they say Kevin is the cello.
Ah yes. Because he plays the cello in a couple videos.
🤦🏾🤦🏾🤦🏾
Queen invented quadraphonic sound, where it went from ear to ear. Its nice to see them pay homage in such a beautiful way.
this is not quadraphonic, it's just stereo, left and right. quadraphonic is left front- right front, left back -right back. you then also need 4 speakers. you can also hear it in for instance in feeling that way, by Journey. the beatles also did that, long time ago. but yes, Queen did it also in their version of this song. th-cam.com/video/vg5vziU-qIs/w-d-xo.html 03:05 min.
@@Herby701 Ah, okay. I am sorry for the miss-information. My mother, who saw Queen in concert, had said they did this song in Quadraphonic.
@@oougahersharr no problem. also in action movies, quadraphonic is used: my brother has a quadrafonic installation with 4 speakers in his room, one in every corner; you hear jet fighters coming from all sides, very frightening 😀
Either way…do you think Brian May, who has a degree in astrophysics, has something to do with it.
@@gerukkyatso I certainly think Brian May would have had a big hand in that.
There is no "new guy" in this video. These are the same five people that were in the Hallelujah video.
Avi left the group the same year (2017) and Matt joined them for the christmas tour (he officially joined the group in 2018)
Plus They use the couch in their two Evolution videos with Matt.
True that ! Cheers Steve !
Thank you! That's exactly what I said as soon as she said that lmao I was so confused
Journey on Feeling that way, and even the Beatles, long time ago already did this, left-right.
Beat boxer is Kevin. Matt doesn't join the group till later. The sound of silence and amazing grace".
If you have ever listened to the original song with headphones (in stereo) the movement between the left and right headphones is there. This video has a LOT of homages to the original video as well (the all black with just the flashlights underlighting.)
The couch.
3) Three sitting on the back of the sofa (and if not on the sofa standing behind) This would be "The Trio" Kirstin, Scott, and Mitch (S&M have known each other since they were in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory at 9/10yrs old and met Kirstie in High school - BFFs ever since.)
2) Two sitting in front.
It makes sense now. I was wondering about the killed a man confession to his mom. Thank you
PTX often changes their looks and style, so getting a bit confused is understandable.
I have seen them twice live, they are just as clean and flipping AMAZING!
You can hear them sing this song live in concert and it sounds just as good as the studio mix.
💜💜💜💜
Ok, where to start... compliments first:
I love your energy! Music is clearly a passion of yours. I also appreciate you ‘tried’ to do homework on Pentatonix.
Ok, now, other comments:
Kirsten is known to explain how to pronounce her name by saying, “Kirsty, like thirsty.”
This video is over 4 years old. These 5 are still the ORIGINAL 5, in fact, the exact same 5 you saw in the Hallelujah reaction. So, Avi (the one with the beard) is the bass, and Kevin is the vocal percussionist. There is no Matt yet. (A great reaction video to do with him in it would be their cover of The Sound of Silence.)
Mitch, for the majority of this song, is singing in his chest voice.
And though you may not have meant
to come off as such, it seems a bit rude, a bit condescending, and a tad pompous.
The guy with the beard is Avi, the same bass from Hallelujah, as others have already told you. Avi now has a solo career and his music is amazing.
Mitch.... as several people have said, he has a very unusual voice.
He has so much talent that I just ... 🤯Mind Blown🤯
Kirstin whose nickname is Kirstie rhymes with thirsty.
I hope this helps 🙂
If you see anything that's wrong, please correct me.
Samantha, you did very well.
@@jamescurfman3284 Thank you!😊
The idea that Avi helped find Matt is incorrect. Ben Bram, PTX's producer/arranger headed the search, which was done by auditioning a number of singers, including Matt. Avi was already effectively gone by then and was contractually not allowed to even release his own solo music until March of 2019.
Not her mixing up the two black guys when one ain't even in the video 😭😭😭
Pentaholics are pretty protective of Mitch.
This video was done in 2016. Avi left in the fall of 2017. Matt Sallee started with PTX on their Christmas tour 2017. He’s been with them nearly three years.
ok so this is not the current pentatonix. matt sallee didn't join pentatonix officially until January of 2018 he came on a trial basis during 2017 Christmas album and tour. you will never see avi and matt in a video together as matt replaced avi when he amicably left the group for personal and family reasons. avi left after their 2017 summer tour ended in september. the person you are thinking is matt is actually kevin, he is the beatboxer but can also sing and sometimes brings out the cello during ptx's songs. hope this helps!
also the girl's name is Kirstin (like thurston) or Kirstie (like thirsty) a lot of ppl think its like key-er-sten and its not.
This is a studio recording. There are always effects added on a studio recording.
@@KajiVocals yet they can perform it live and it sounds exactly the same...
@@dangdang4334 And? Lol. Every studio recording gets processed...
@@KajiVocals But when they are live IT SOUNDS THE SAME. So how much processing went into this IF IT SOUNDS THE SAME when they do it LIVE? Get your logic straight.
i think the couch is a symbol, they started out doing videos on a couch
No the couch is not taking them on an adventure, it more about their history as a band. They did a number of earlier videos recorded on a couch, if I remember right I think the visuals are meant to represent how they kind of still feel like the same band, despite going on the road, at their heart they are still the group recording videos on the couch.
I’m just going from memory so I may be of slightly, but I do remember them talking about the couch. A lot of people read way way too much into the couch.
Oh and they are not “The Pentatonix”, does it say The Pentatonix on their page or the title of the video, it’s just “Pentatonix”.
They sound just as good live.
The pan from ear to ear is a direct homage to the original record, as in vinyl record. Stereophonic sound was a new thing then
You're right!
The couch has been a staple of most of their early videos before they had a record label.
Avi, the black bearded bass is classically trained.
I he has a fabulous range, the best resonance of any I have heard and is a good Polyphonic singer as well.
The couch, from a thrift store is called cheap staging.
Did you know that PTX dropped a brand new (original) song today: Be My Eyes
Good song!
You might be interested in reacting to Pentatonix's cover of "When the Party's Over."
The sound moving from one ear to the other was paying homage to the Queen version that did the same thing.
Yesssssss! I didn't know you reacted to PTX!! 😍
It's so clear to me that you have a real problem understanding Mitch's voice. He never used a head voice or a falsetto except in one section when he hit the high note He is a high tenor and was in his chest voice and mix through out 90%of the song.
Countertenor
They started their career on a couch doing youtube vids.
..
The fact the video is flipped kinda messed with my brain for a while
Another Pentatonix cover you should react to is "mary did you know." Kevin has a verse to himself so you can learn his voice more and I honestly think it's my favorite cover of theirs besides bohemian rhapsody
Maybe I'll check it out thanks ♥️
We fans that have been there from the beginning recognized "the couch" right away!!!
the switch from ear to ear is called stereo separation it was totally popular before surround sound
I don’t know if you will see this the video is a year old. But you should review their 90’s medley is AMAZING! Several throw backs!
This video is three years old. Avi (bassist) was still part of the group at that point. He's since been replaced by Matt.
This is an older song they did. The bassist here is there original bassist. His name is Avi Kaplin. Matt is the new bassist that joined after left, and is in the newer songs.
💜💜💜💜
The couch was to pay homage to how they met. Scott, Mitch and Kiersten were friends and met Avi (base) and Kevin (beatboxer) at a singing competition and joined forces. Avi helped find Matt as a replacement when he left the group.
Thanks for the info!!!! 🥰 🥰 🥰
Stay safe.
Not mixed and no vocal synthesizer! And the megaphone is simply a prop for the video. Watch the live version and you'll see. ALL voices only
To "feel that bass" check out the bass Avi Kaplan's original solo work~~ His voice is pure beauty!
Jaja.. falsetto it's something TOTALLY different from Head voice OR head-mix!! for male voice at least ! 😀
The couch signifies the brain storm sessions the group has when creating their arrangements.
Thnaks for letting me know 🥰 🥰 🥰 🥰
I know everyone told you about Avi being the previous bass, but you can go to his youtube page and hear his solo stuff he's been putting out since he left the group.
It sounds just as amazing live.
He looks way hotter too haha
If you want to listen to Matt you can react to Sound of Silence.
Please, don't mix Matt and Kevin, they are very different. Also Kevin is a tenor and the only one doing beatboxing consistently.
The couch is because on their first videos, when they had no money, they used to record on a couch, just like the begining of the video.
It's still Avi. The same as in hallelujah.
PTX like to put little nods to themselves and also to the original artists.... people below have explained the couch and also the left/right panning at the beginning.... also the 'stars' is an apparent nod to Dr Brian May of Queen, who holds a PhD in astrophysics... and the trio falling onto the couch at the end is a nod to the album art for the Queen album 'Sheer Heart Attack' (thanks to those Pentaholics who passed on those snippets of info ! )
The couch is signature Pentatonix. Peruse more of their older ad lib type videos. They're always on a couch.
So the couch plays an important role in this video.
It's a place for them to sit.
🙂 correct
Have you heard the original Queen version? Their version also switches from left side to right side.
The couch is a nod to their early videos on youtube and to the fanbase from back then who always talked about the couches lol
If you want to really appreciate Avi's range listen to "Black is the color of my true loves hair"......his range is insane
Avi was the original bass singer. This song was done prior to Matt becoming the bass singer when Avi left the group.
This is the original lineup for Pentatonx before Avi left the group and Matt joined.
Check out a video with them singing this live...AMAZING!!!!
Many, many, many of the first videos where sung on a couch. Many of those were done raw, no studio pre-recording. I really liked "Thrift Shop" and "Gundam Style".
*Gundam* *Style* 🤣 Gotta love autocorrect.
This is filmed before Avi Kaplan left. He left in 2017.
September I believe
This was recorded before Avi had to leave the group; Matt isn't there because he wasn't a member yet.
The couch is because they would record live videos sitting on the couch like that back in the day
The different sounds from side to side was something Queen did on the original. I’m not sure how prevalent it’s use was but I’ve definitely heard the Beatles do it too
They do this live too. They are very firm about wanting to be able to do everything they sing in videos-live.
You should watch them live to get a better understanding of their voices. Or especially Mitch and Scott watch like their cover of Defying Gravity.
Matt not in the group yet. Its Avi and Kevin who sing bass and beat box.
