    Great job! You forged a sword, handle, guard and formed a pomel from aluminum cast using classic methods and mainly hand tools. All in one video. Very ambitious. I'm sure you learned a ton. Very good work 👍

    A little bit of advice for next time, if you're using rebar you really shouldn't use one that thin since rebar is an inferior metal. For that blade type you really also shouldn't sharpen the edges since it thins out the blade to much and makes it more of a saw blade than a sword blade. if you can get your hands on some 1045 i think that would be good its the lowest high carbon steel you can get. As a rule of thumb try to make the blade width about 2/3 of your hand and keep it at about 4mm. If you can fix the handle pommel and guard snugly to the blade that would help at giving it more durability and it would be comfier.I really liked the lost wax method though,it was a smart choice and it came out nice. Keep it up.

  • @nathanc939
    @nathanc939 7 ปีที่แล้ว +69

    It is a bit on the thin side, so I think forging the bevel and tapering the blade would have greatly helped. Now the most important point would be to make your tang and handle not round, it would help greatly.
    So for a beginer project it was really good and I think that most little mistake do not have their origins in a lack of forging skills or practice but in a small lack of sword knowledge.

    • @dogsmile100
      @dogsmile100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nathan Carrier Its meant to be thin, reappears are more meant for thrusting not so much slice and dice.

    • @nathanc939
      @nathanc939 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nanners sea I know rapier but they usualy have a diamon shaped blade, because it make them better in the thrust by making them a little bit thicker.
      Choping blade are the one that should be thin. For exemple true historical falchion were way thiner than normal sword because they were 100% cut oriented and made to fight against unarmored opponet or gambeson.

    Keep up the good work. Make friends with a mechanic. Get a coil, leaf spring, sway bar and/or an A-arm from a car (or truck) suspension. That is some good, higher carbon spring steel for free. Same deal on the cheap from an automotive scrapyard. Just make sure you have someone that knows what they are doing removing coil springs, etc. A coil spring and strut can have 1000 - 1500 lbs of static compression; even on a small car. A 3/4" coil spring holds 3/4 of a ton, at normal ride height. That's enough force to decapitate a person or amputate a limb. Have fun. Work safe. A mechanic might give you an old ball peen hammer laying around the shop. Tell 'em what your up to, even show them the rapier. They will probably appreciate your handywork.

    • @seanbean6598
      @seanbean6598 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      tehlolercaust yes however he is using it to cleave and not cut. With any sort of thin fencing sword all of your technique will be coming from the wrist, which he wasnt doing. He was using his sword more as like a longsword or axe and using his whole arm. Btw early rapiers actually didnt have a cutting edge because they were used to beat knight in plate armor by striking at the gaps in their armor (above the knee, under the shoulder, between the neck and shoulder, the elbow etc.) so a cutting edge would be useless against the armor. Even a well made gambison would be extremely hard for a rapier to cut through. The cutting edge only came into the scene when plate armor became ineffective because guns were introduced and people just started wearing clothes into battle

    • @FailedPoet444

    This cool- I've wanted to get into smithing forever now, and I really like the simplicity of it, just one bit of note- I've always heard that your handle should be oval(ish) shape, instead of round, because it fits better, but also so you can always tell which direction your blade is going without needing to check- not at all a historian of swords or anything, just something I've learned from watching far more skalligrim and forged in fire (ect similar videos) than I should actually be proud to admit.. 😅 but anyways, subbed! Keep up the work and don't give up!

    Yes, rebar isn't the best steel especially for a rapier, however this is this gentleman's first time forging a big sword. Rebar is a good metal to start out with, f me made a good lookin' sword. I applaud him for that. We all startes out somewhere.

    Actually... this is great. I need to make like 20+ practice rapiers for my fencing club and I never thought to use rebar. Considering they normally retail like $600+ each... this will work very well.

    Not sure why there are so many dislikes. I thought this was a really cool idea! The people here who disliked this must be some fake elitists that have never messed around in a forge. When you start smithing little projects like this are fun and don't require a critical eye BECAUSE it's made out of common material. Keep it up!

      but short answer to that is no. just no. never is rebar useful in a blade. ever. not ever. not even a little bit. not even sometimes. never. ever.

    A nugget of knowledge from a fellow smith: work hotter than you think you need to when you're trying to move the steel (a glowing yellow works best) red is a little too far on the cold side. Constructive criticism aside, keep up the good work my man.

  • @algirdassalomskas9050

    Keep going with this! You really make me want to try swordsmithing :) really cool to see someone working with what they have and being percistent, and putting in honest hard work and actually finishing a project. Keep this sword, never throw it out, it might seem crude after some experience and making better blades, but in 10 years You might look upon it very, very fondly. I regret throwing away my first attempts in anything when enough time passes.

  • @theartisticcrusader9519

    If this is your first sword, then it's very good. All the people hating on it need to get their acts together and realize that not everybody is perfect and nobody gets it right on the first time. Keep using scrap metals like rebar for practice, and use better metals like steel and iron for the real legit thing. Rebar is good for practicing. Keep up the good work, dude!

  • @DKSGamingandArt1357420

    You did good on this! Don't let these hate comments and whatever discourage you. The only thing I would say about this is that rapiers aren't meant for slicing like a short or long sword, they're meant for jabbing and stabbing. Keep it round and stab something with it.
