    It's honestly nice to see somebody actually taking the time to truly forge instead of just taking a piece of bar stock and cutting and grinding it down into the final piece.

      Agreed. A lot of "forging" videos aren't actually forging at all.

    This is beautiful work. The height of the blade, the rocking movement it all perfectly done. But for someone like me who has to chop large amounts of herbs, often the handle is not practical at all. Too thin, and there is no easy way to rock it back and forth to use it on the herbs. ❤

    I really liked this simple design and decided to forge one finally this evening. It isn't as pretty, but I think it'll come out nice enough. I have a love for these kinds of blades as they remind me of the centuries before machining, when you could look at something and see how much time, patience, and skill had been put into it.

    I would love to get to do this one day but I can't afford the anvil forge or steels the rest is just part of a basic tool kit though any recommendations for cheap yet good forges in the uk ps love your videos ;)

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks. A forge is quite easy to build. A pipe and a hole in the ground is pretty much a functional forge. Just need a blower. Anvils can be hard to find, but just keep your eyes open and search flee markets, farm auctions etc. Contact local blacksmiths and seek info. Any large chunk of steel would work as an anvil in the mean time.

      xtraw it's pretty easy to make your own forge. I've made a couple. Anvil just needs to be a solid bit of metal

  • @wiggygrump

    Im thinking about making my mother one of these as a Christmas gift. for the sharpening and grinding, could a metal file and sandpaper work if you dont have a power sander or an angle grinder?

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it will work. It depends somewhat on what steel you have, and if you can anneal it properly. I use O1 which to some extent air harden and can be tricky to fully anneal without a heat treating oven. It's tough on your files if not soft enough.

    • @wiggygrump
      @wiggygrump 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is there any specific steel that would be easier on the file but would still be hard enough for this chopper? Thankyou for your answer btw.

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Aaron Stoeckl I'm no knife maker really, but I think W-1,1084 or 1095 (hardened in water) is easier to work. Even salvaged spring steel (oil hardened) would work fine, and it usually is soft enough if you let it cool by itself slowly.

    • @wiggygrump
      @wiggygrump 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Just letting you know because I know other people who are having problems with people taking their videos without asking or giving any sort of credit.

    so. if you like your flat iron for a bevel, you can bore a hole through the other side, and run a bungee cable around your anvil so it doesn't bounce around.
